Central Oregon RANCHER
Central Oregon Since 1953 RANCHER August, 2011 Rodney Saylor Johnson November 30, 1920 — August 5, 2011 Dad passed away August 5, 2011 watering his ewes at his place in Powell Butte. He enjoyed raising sheep for over 60 years. He’s shown, upper left, at Swift Steel’s 30th year celebration at their yard in Redmond. They took this photo of Dad at their big event in October, 2007 and sent it to us. Upper right he’s shown with Mom, Betty Crain Johnson, shortly before they got married in 1943. We will be holding a service and Celebration of Life Sunday, August 28 at the Powell Butte Community Center at 1:00 p.m. The Center is located at 8404 S.W. Reif Road in Powell Butte, two miles south of the old Grange Hall. page 2 — CENTRAL OREGON RANCHER — August, 2011 Justin, Louie and Pete are assembling an end of field auto reverse and a new control panel for an older pivot with well used up parts. It doesn’t have to be. It’s simple, in good times you can afford to advertise in many places ... in tough times ... you advertise where the money is ... and it’s always in agriculture. We’re Gonna Miss Tom It’s a little easier to say goodbye to someone that lived a long life. When it gets cut short it is tougher to take. Tom had many, many friends at his service August 1 at the Green Spot Arena in Madras. I think the crowd was easily more than 1,000. He also touched the lives of thousands more that couldn’t leave the hay field or whatever job they were on ... but I guarantee you they were thinking of him. Our condolences go to the entire Green Family. Back at RANCHER Headquarters Our life will be a little different now, too. Dad, Rodney S. Johnson, passed away August 5 on his place in Powell Butte he bought from Rush Duncan in the early 60s. We had just weaned the lambs a couple days before and he was in the pasture watering his ewes. The Crook County Sherrif personnel, the EMTs and others that quickly responded were professional and helpful and we appreciate that. We plan to hold a service August 28 at the Powell Butte Community Center on Reif (RIFE) Road in Powell Butte at 1 p.m. We’ve asked long-time friend, Tom Alexander, to say a few words and then we can visit. Overseeding mite damage on a 5-year-old 75-acre hay field Will not create additional rock and weed problems as turn under and plant will. Will create faster germination of new grasses as seed is correctly placed in moist sod. Will positively increase yield in older over-grazed fields for pasture or hay usage. Will allow you to add an additional grass or alfalfa variety to your present field crop. Will allow you to cost effectively repair mite or grazing damage or sprayed cheat grass areas of your field. The 8th annual event posted a record high average of $3,900 on 45 head that passed through the ring with 34 sales achieved. Broke geldings were in demand with the top ten hefting an average of $8,500 a piece. Skippin Jackson, a 6-year old AQHA gelding consigned by Cory and Jaris Shelman topped the sale at $13,000 and sold to Ken Buscher of Bonanza, Oregon. The average for the 2011 weanling colts was up from past years bringing on average $1,650.00 a piece. The two day event started off on Friday, July 15, with a Reined Cowhorse Clinic instructed by Legendary Horseman Ted Robinson of Oakview, California. As in the past, Ted offered excellent instruction and good humor for adult and youth riders on reined cowhorse fundamentals. Ted then viewed each horse in our sale as it was led through preview and sift, checking each individual for soundness, blemishes and quality. Wired with a portable microphone Ted offered commentary on each horse individually. The ranch horse trail class continues to be well attended by buyers as each horse in the sale must complete the course. Each horse and rider must open and close a gate, cross a log, drag a tire, retrieve a coat off the fence and hang on saddle and cross a bridge. We continue to see the individuals who complete these everyday ranch chores well, bring a premium in the ring. Buyers had the chance to view arena-ready rope and ranch horses during our team roping preview at the Harney County Fairgounds. Sellers had the opportunity to show their horse out of the box according to their ability. Buyers were able to see these horses on all types of cattle, hard fresh runners and tired roped out stock. All in attendance were treated to a BBQ hosted by the Shelman’s and featuring Buermann’s Ranch Meats of Burns, Oregon. HOLLINGSWORTHS’ INC. It was another great year, with visitors from almost every county in Oregon, the usual Western States, and also from Oklahoma, Illinois, Alabama, Georgia, New York, Wisconsin, Virginia, Vermont, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Mexico. People traveled to the only event of its kind in the Northwest to learn about renewable energy and traditional skills. They greeted the electric cars from Portland and northern Idaho, including the first new Nissan Leaf to come past The Dalles, which made it all the way to John Day on electric power with charging stops set up by EORenew. SolWest had the best Sunday ever, as local people turned out to check out the offerings and take advantage of the free Sunday afternoon admission. SolWest would like to thank all the local volunteers who helped make the event a success. We are already looking forward to next year’s event, which will take place July 27-29, 2012. Continued from page 4 Dad was a pilot in World War II. A 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. He didn’t talk much about it. Going through papers the last few days I learned quite a bit. He was checked out in numerous planes and his log books were interesting reading. He served his country like so many did back then. He flew out of necessity and didn’t care much about it after the war. Mom’s Dad E.W. Crain flew in World War I and was also in the cavalry. I learned to fly and was partners in a Bonanza for a bit with Kenny Larkin and Mike Churches. Flying is expensive and I guess the accomplishment of getting a certificate was the best part. Flying is such a great feeling. Dad, Mom and my two sisters, Jan and Maradee moved up into the modified A-frame home in 1964. If many of the newcomers knew what we paid for the entire 160 acres they would be envious. Let’s just say you couldn’t buy three good Angus pairs for less. Dad did a lot of the work himself, especially on the walls of the daylight basement. I remember the little old cement mixer got a work-out for a year or so. With each load we would squish several bowling ball size Powell Butte rocks into the each new pour to fill the forms faster and to save money. Dad was about 28 in this photo. He smoked for 70 years. He quit about six years ago, but started chewing. Scouring our land and everywhere else for more rocks to use in the foundation. I think about 640 head of sheep was the biggest his flock ever got. And sometimes down to a few, but for over 60 years sheep in some form or another sheep were around. Dad was born November 30, 1920 and grew up in Portland with his sister Joyce. I never met Grandpa Roy Johnson but Grandma Hazel was always glad to see us kids when we went to the Big City for holidays. Living next to Eastmoreland Golf Course developed a passion for golf in Dad. He was real good in his younger days. A back operation when I was four enable him to start golfing again and he and Mom were members of the Prineville Country Club for many years. I thought golf was for the birds most of my life. I would play a round with Mom every few years and take a beating. She didn’t hit it very far, but it was as if they mowed the fairways just for her. I got interested in golf about 12 years ago. Dad and Mark Howard, who has worked with us for 25 years or so, would be gone golfing now and then and I was left at home doing some sort of work. So I took it up the sport. Dad went to Washington High School in Portland and later took engineering classes at Oregon State College in Corvallis. After Grandpa Roy passed away Dad changed his major to journalism and graduated from University of Oregon. He worked for several newspapers on the coast and then moved to Central Oregon. He toyed with the idea of buying the Central Oregonian. Bob Chandler owned the Bend Bulletin and he and Dad met a couple times discussing just that. Dad decided to start the Central Oregon RANCHER in 1952. After a few months of sales he had enough to pay for printing and the first issue was mailed in March of 1953. We were living at the Balfour place in Powell Butte. We had a lease/option on it. But Mrs. Balfour decided not to sell so Dad made other plans. We lived across the highway from June and Norma Welch for several years while we were building in the 60s. I took some college courses at COCC and one term at OSU. It wasn’t for me. I think the libtards annoyed me even back then. I worked in the woods for McCallen Logging, John Collins/DLCO Logging, Kanna Logging out of Klamath Falls, Woodward Logging and even spent a few months on the MC Ranch out of Adel. I enjoyed physical work and being horseback or running machinery was just fine with me. Mom talked me into going to work for Dad so I could take over the magazine and she and Dad could retire and travel. So being a good son, that’s what I did. I started working for Dad at $200 a week. After the grind of each monthly issue he didn’t want to see me for a week. I would work for Craig Woodward during that week, some weekends and some holidays to make ends meet for several years. Eventually the treehuggers shut down the logging and the magazine was keeping me busier. Mom became sick for several years and passed away on January 11, 1990. I knew retirement wouldn’t be good for Dad so I just kept working with him and our original agreements were put on hold. Dad was still active in the magazine until about seven years ago. He always did a few hours of proof reading each month ... so if errors pick up a little for the next 30 years, you will know why. It’s sure not the same with him gone, but life is full of obstacles and adjustments. I was very lucky to be able to be around when needed by my folks. If there were drawbacks, they were few. It’s been a long 12 days since Dad passed. I have a couple more ads to put together. Some more news to put down and I have to be at the printer in six hours. Thanks for bearing with the rambling. The last of the three local county fairs just completed. Football practice starts this week. It seems as soon as kids finish one activity, they are off to the next. One comment about the fairs. I would like to compliment the local businesses and individuals on their ability to continue their support of the 4-H & FFA livestock auctions ... with the state of the economy ... the money donated to those exhibitors was GREAT! At Central Oregon Ranch Supply, we are now right in the middle of preconditioning. We are stocked up with fall programs in place, and ready to assist you in adding value to your good calves. I have said this before ... can you imagine what a set of weaned, preconditioned, bunk broke calves might bring with video season winding down and the inventory for calves so tight. Central Oregon Ranch Supply is also deep in preparation for our Trade Show. We will be celebrating our 35th Anniversary! I have asked these manufacturers to dig a little deeper for promos and giveaways to commemorate our 35 years. We are very excited with many great things coming together. Watch for your Trade Show catalog in the mail after Labor Day. This year’s Trade Show will include a Prime Rib dinner, the Million Penny Roundup 4-H Fund-raiser, a Free trip to the NFR in Las Vegas, plus, the biggest selection of promos, product and suppliers we have ever been able to offer! Let us know if we can help you with your calf program and we will see you September 23rd & 24th at our Trade Show in Powell Butte. Thanks, Mark Malott ivomec Fly Control for cattle!
