Happy February everybody! Ready to
parrtaaay? This issue brings our semiannual Perfect Party Guide to you.
I remember when a birthday party
consisted of a cake, candles, ten friends
and noisemakers. That doesn’t cut it
anymore. Babies have come a long way!
Nowadays the theme is the thing.
So you might have a Cinderella party,
a Toy Story party, a Spiderman party or
a Fancy Nancy party. Then sprinkle in a
clown or a pirate, add a bounce house or
pony rides and you have the best party on
the block. If you opt for less mess
and easy clean-up, you can invite all
your children’s friends and relatives to
a bowling alley, an indoor playground,
a skating rink, a park or a ranch.
Our Perfect Party Guide will help you
plan a party to remember.
Don’t forget Valentine’s Day February
14th. But don’t wait until then to show
someone you love them. A hug and a card
will put a smile on anyone’s face but you
may want to make the day (or night) more
special by taking your loved one to a
Valentine event listed in the mag.
If you have not yet signed up to receive
our e-blast called Blabber Mouth, you’re
missing the latest weekend news and also
the digital version of the magazine where
you can flip the pages and read it online.
How great is that?!
I’m sending out a hug to all of you
readers, friends and family alike,
and I wish you much love and happiness
all month long!

Women Change
History
by Meribeth C. Shank
Revisiting the past can give us courage and hope for what lies ahead.
These books about women who made choices that changed the world can
prompt us to discover new directions for our own futures. Read on!!
Claudette Colvin:
Twice Toward Justice
Rosa’s Bus:
The Ride to Civil Rights
by Phillip Hoose. Square Fish, $9.99, Ages 10+
by Jo S. Kittinger, illustrated by Steven Walker.
Calkins Creek, $17.95, Ages 7-9
Growing up in central
Alabama during the
1950’s, if you were
black, meant you
lived a segregated
existence and you
couldn’t even touch
a white person
without some kind of
repercussion. Buses
were central to the
separation of the
races, and a daily
humiliation for blacks
who often had no other form of transportation to
get to their employment.
Claudette Colvin, who was fifteen years old in
March 1955 when she refused to leave her seat
at the bus driver’s demand to
“Get up, gal!” actually predates Rosa Parks’
seated activism by nine months, and re-invigorated
conversations about a bus boycott that had been
quietly under discussion for many years. Colvin
was arrested, later convicted, and appealed
without success.
In December, Rosa Parks was arrested for
her now-famous resolve. This last was the
provocation that actually produced the bus
boycott. Then during the boycott, the decision
was made to file a lawsuit in Alabama federal
court as a “constitutional challenge to state
law.” This resulted in the judgment by a federal
court to abolish “segregated seating on …
Alabama’s buses,” bringing success and an
end to the boycott.
Using sometimes-graphic archival photos and
well-placed sidebars with related information, this
slim, well-written, intriguing book reads almost
like a novel.

This nonfiction
book is the
biography of a
bus, telling the
story of the
Montgomery,
Alabama bus
boycott that
lasted for 382
days, after
Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. This
particular bus, #2857, was manufactured by
General Motors in Pontiac, Michigan in 1948, and
served first in Terre Haute, Indiana for six years,
before arriving in Montgomery.
The story of this bus is also the story of the
different ways white people and black people were
treated on public buses in Alabama, and other
southern states of the United States in 1955.
“That’s just the way things were” is a repeating
line, insistently reminding readers of both the
unfairness of the Jim Crow laws, and the fact that
people accepted this injustice as part of daily life.
Other important elements in this picture book are
the commitment of black people to walk instead
of ride, and the financial losses the bus company
experienced when black people, and their money,
disappeared from daily bus trips for over a year. Oil
illustrations strengthen the power of the story with
dark and light in opposition, adding intensity. One
vigorous double page spread shows pairs of feet, at
street level, striding across the sidewalk, spreading
the energy behind the boycott and alternating
with other pages of faces during an indoor church
gathering, and both within and outside the bus.
The book concludes with the rescue of the old
bus from a junkyard and later, from a field where
it stood for many years, rusting, before being sold
at auction, restored, and placed on display back
in Michigan where it was “born” -- this time at the
Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.
Cleopatra Rules!
The Amazing Life of the
Original Teen Queen
by Vicky Alvear Schecter.Boyds Mills, $17.95, Ages 11-14
Using a chatty writing
style, refreshing
brief sidebars to
accompany oftendiverting archival
photos, and slightly
longer sidebars
to enhance the
occasionally funny
text, author Schecter
immediately engages
her readers in the
Introduction by asking questions and predicting
surprise. The layout of the book makes it a
quick read, in large part because the headings
– chapters, sections are brief but dynamic,
using a staccato conversational reporter voice
that is nearly irresistible.
Beginning with a warning that everything
the reader may have previously read or heard
about this fascinating, intelligent ruler is likely
manipulated by her detractors, Schecter follows
with the observation that the famous (or perhaps
infamous) last pharaoh of Egypt grew up nerdy
– that is to say, she spent a lot of time in the
renowned Library of Alexandria (Egypt) becoming
a scholar, especially of languages, but also of
mathematics, science, philosophy and politics.
All of which prepared her for her role as princess,
queen, ruler, pharaoh, and beloved goddess of
the Egyptian people.
The text manages to mix palace intrigue, sibling
marriage, independence, strategic alliances,
assassination, feuding, wars, negotiations,
sumptuous barges and power parties, wealth
and jewelry, cosmetics and wigs, even calendars,
and of course suicide, to successfully display a
brilliant and visionary intelligence wedded to a
formidable magnetic presence, to characterize
this ruler whose female force was used to create
a world of power sharing.

REEL LIFEE
WITH JAN
— by Jane Louise Boursaw
Movie reviews
for you and
your family
Stranded whales, Jedi warriors,
and tiny Borrowers are heading to
theaters this month. Here’s a sneak
peek at what’s new in theaters.
MOVIES in February
BIG MIRACLE
WOMAN IN BLACK
PG-13 for thematic material and
violence/disturbing images.
In theaters 2/03. Ok for kids 12+.
PG for language. In theaters 2/03. Ok for kids 7+.
You already know how things will turn out in
Big Miracle, but that’s ok. It’s still an inspiring
story filled with hope and wonder. Based
on the book Freeing the Whales by Thomas
Rose, this real-life tale begins with smalltown news reporter Adam Carlson (John
Krasinski) looking to escape the northern tip
of Alaska for a bigger market. But then the
story of his career breaks – a group of whales
are trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. With time
running out, Adam and his ex-girlfriend, environmentalist Rachel
Kramer (Drew Barrymore), must rally an unlikely coalition of Inuit
natives, oil companies and Russian and American military to set
aside their differences and free the whales. Directed by Ken Kwapis
(Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), this movie is mushy and sweet and
a good choice for both you and your kids.
Harry Potter is moving on … sniff
… In this gothic horror, Daniel
Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, a
widowed lawyer whose grief has
put his career in jeopardy. When
he’s sent to a remote village to
sort out the affairs of a recently
deceased eccentric, it becomes clear that everyone in the town is
keeping a deadly secret. The townspeople try to keep Kipps from
learning their tragic history, but he soon discovers that the house
belonging to his client is haunted by the ghost of a woman determined
to find someone and something she lost, and no one is safe from her
vengeance. This film might attract teenagers who grew up watching
Radcliffe as the young wizard, but it’s too dark for tweens.
STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 – THE PHANTOM MENACE IN 3D
PG for sci-fi action/violence. In theaters 2/10. Ok for kids 9+.
Yes, it’s true. Every movie will eventually head back to theaters in 3D, or so it seems. This first chapter of the Star Wars
saga begins with Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson)
discovering nine-year-old Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), a young slave unusually strong in the Force. After winning a
thrilling Pod race, Anakin journeys to Naboo with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, who content with a deadly foe named Darth
Maul. Meanwhile, Anakin and the Queen face massive invasion forces – the first in a sinister scheme by dark forces
known as the Sith. If you’re like me, you probably need a storyboard to keep track of what’s what, but this 3D theatrical
release is a great springboard to watch the Star Wars saga again from the beginning.
JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND
THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY
PG for some adventure action and brief mild language. In theaters 2/10. Ok for kids 8+.
Rated G. In theaters 2/17. Ok for kids 6+.
Based on the book by Jules Verne, this
follow-up to 2008’s Journey to the Center
of the Earth finds young Sean Anderson
(Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role)
receiving a coded distress signal from
a mysterious island where no island
should exist. Unable to stop him from
going, Sean’s new stepfather Hank
(Dwayne Johnson) joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis
Guzman) and his strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out
to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant, and escape before seismic
shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.
Directed by Brad Peyton, the film also features Michael Caine as Sean’s
grandfather and Kristin Davis as Sean’s mom. While this might not be the
best adventure movie ever, it’s still a fun caper with a PG rating that’s ok for
kids 8 and older. It’s also a good way to get kids reading the classic novel.
Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the animator
behind Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle and
Spirited Away, directs this sweet film
based on Mary Norton’s classic book The
Borrowers. Arrietty (voiced by Bridgit
Mendler), is a tiny but tenacious 14year-old girl who lives with her parents
(Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) under
the floorboards of a suburban home.
Like all little people, Arrietty remains
hidden except for the occasional covert
ops to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar
cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn
(David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home,
discovers his mysterious housemate, a secret friendship
blossoms and poses danger for Arrietty and her family.

By Dr. Raym
Here are six tips to decoding the financial aid award letter—
and questions to ask before your teen chooses a school:
Compare out-of-pocket costs. To put together a financial
aid package, each college calculates your financial
need—the projected cost of attendance less your Expected
Family Contribution (EFC). Large variances in out-of-pocket
cost are likely due to a college’s total cost (tuition and fees,
room and board, supplies and other expenses). Is the cost
of attendance figure at each college consistent? How does
each college calculate your EFC?
Understand that you may need to pay more than the EFC.
If a college’s cost of education is $20,000 and your EFC
is $5,000, that leaves $15,000 in unmet financial need.
However, if the aid package totals $12,000, that leaves a
$3,000 gap you’ll have to cover. You should consider this
gap when comparing colleges.
Review any student contribution. Some colleges’ financial
aid award letters may list a student contribution figure—the
amount that a student is expected to contribute from private
scholarships and savings. They might also list a self-help
expectation—a student’s earnings from a job. You and your
student should evaluate this figure carefully and determine
how much he or she would need to work throughout the
school year and in the summers to raise this amount.
Review additional information. Some financial aid award
letters offer a web address where you can review terms
and conditions of loans, grants and scholarships, as well
as required next steps to accept or deny aid. Even if you
understand the information provided in the letter, it will be
helpful to get more details and understand the “fine print.”
Consider how much debt your student can realistically
handle once he or she graduates. Remember that the aid
you view in an award letter is for one year. Think beyond
one year—if a student takes out a loan for $7,000 each year
for four (or more) years, that’s a sizeable amount of debt at
graduation. Also consider factors such as repayment terms
and interest rates.
Find out what aid will go away in future years. Ask the
financial aid office how much aid to expect in future years
if your family’s financial situation stays about the same. Are
all grants listed on the financial aid award letter four-year
grants, or are some of them for freshmen only? How about
scholarships—did the letter list any one-year scholarships?
For four-year scholarships, what will be expected of your
student to keep them?
Financial aid award letters vary from college to college,
so don’t be afraid to ask financial aid administrators to
explain any sections that are ambiguous. An award letter
should give you a good understanding of what the college
will cost your family. Before you make any decisions, get the
clarity you need.

Fight Less, Love More
Enjoy a Romantic
Married Life
By Laurie Puhn
Where did the romance go? If you’re
like most couples, including my clients
and myself, you get home from a planned
date night feeling wonderfully upbeat. The
next night you can barely remember where you
went to or what you ate.
Sporadic attempts at romance are just that
– temporary and easily forgotten. From date night
to a Valentine’s Day weekend getaway, each has
tremendous value, while we’re doing it. But when we
return home to our predictable routine of working
and caring for our children, those special one-on-one
moments with our honey quickly fade.
Does this mean that a marriage with children is
in trouble if the couple doesn’t have those heart
throbbing romantic highs once shared in the dating
phase? Absolutely not. When kids are in the mix,
married couples should expect a more tempered, but
certainly visible, daily romantic connection.
There are two kinds of romance, the one that
spontaneously happens to you because of a special
setting, like watching a sunset over the beach, or
gazing at each other through a candlelit dinner
with soft music in the background, and the one you
make happen anywhere, by consciously choosing to
say the right words at the right time to your mate.
The first type of romance readily happens during
the dating period, the second type requires greater
awareness and effort if you and your spouse want
keep your romantic attraction alive for the long-run.
The things we say and do, and don’t say or do,
can spark or block a loving connection. Our daily
word choices become what I call a couple’s “daily
communication routine. Hard-pressed for quality
time with our partners and spouses, it’s easy to fall
victim to a poor communication routine. To stop this
from happening, today I ask you to pay attention
to your established communication routine. Then,
if needed, include these loving comments in your
conversations with your honey. Ask your spouse to
do the same and the results will astound you.

First, let’s put our mate
first, every day. When one of you
walks in the door, immediately
greet each other (not the little kids
or your computer first). Or, if you see
your kids first, greet them, but don’t stop
there. Find your spouse. A gentle touch on
the shoulder with a simple “hello, how was
your day?” warms up the night. If you’re on
the phone when your mate gets home, end the
conversation. Yes, your spouse’s arrival takes
priority over others.
Second, say “good morning,” and “good night”
to each other every day. These statements bring
to mind that it is a good day or night because you
are together and with your special someone. Not
surprisingly, in our online research we found that
25% of couples don’t consistently say goodnight
to each other, and of those, 70% had thought
about breaking up in the prior year.
Finally, show love by highlighting your mate’s
positive character traits. Pick one out every day,
and if you think that’s hard, simply look for the
little things. Make comments like, “I love you for
(fill-in-the-blank),” As an example, one day I told
my husband, “I love you for leaving a new tube
of toothpaste on the bathroom sink for me to
use. That was really kind.” And one of my favorite
compliments (which my husband knows) is to
hear him say some variety of, “You are such a
good mother because you have so much patience
with the kids.” Interestingly, in our research, when
we asked people whether they’d prefer their mate
compliment them for being good-looking (a visual
compliment), or kind (a character compliment)
84 percent answered, “kind.”
A positive daily communication routine is the
way to keep love alive, when you don’t have time
for a vacation or a hand-in-hand sunset walk
in the park. For romance to thrive during childrearing years you have to choose it, or lose it.

Preventing
Sports Injuries
Courtesy of Miami Children’s Hospital
As parents, we all know the many
benefits that can come with our children
playing sports. Besides being a great way
to keep healthy and physically fit, team
sports provide kids with a wide range of
useful life skills, including discipline and
ability to work as part of a team, which
can enhance self-esteem. But playing
sports also puts children at risk of getting
injured. According to the National Center
For Sports Safety, over 3.5 million kids
under the age of 14 receive medical
treatment for sports-related injuries
each year. That’s why it’s important to
be informed of the different types of
sports-related injuries, their causes and
what you can do to help prevent them.
What Typically Causes
Sports Related Injuries?
Did you know that children ages 5-14
account for nearly 40 percent of sportsrelated injuries seen in emergency
rooms? Younger children are more
susceptible to sports-related injuries than
adults because they are typically less
coordinated and have a slower reaction
time. Broken bones, concussions and eye
injuries can result from falls, being hit
with an object or colliding into another
player. Sprains and strains are also
among the most common types of sportsrelated injuries, and typically happen to
children who play sports that involve
repetitive movements such as swimming,
gymnastics,
baseball
and
tennis.
What Can I Do to Prevent
My Child From Being Injured?
When it comes to children and sports,
injuries are inevitable. But there are
certain things you, as a parent, can do to
lower the risk of your child suffering from
a painful or potentially dangerous sportsrelated injury. Before you sign your child
up for a sport like little league baseball,
soccer or football, make sure he or she
knows how to play the game, since more
experienced players may be involved.
Once your child feels comfortable
enough to play with other kids, make
sure he or she has all the proper
equipment (helmets, shoes, padding,
mouth guards and protective cups)
and that all their equipment is in good
condition. Lack of proper equipment
is to blame for many sports injuries in
children. Meanwhile, enroll your child in a
reputable sport program run by a school,
youth center or church. Find a coach that
is trained in first-aid and CPR, and one who
encourages children to play by the rules.
When a Child is Injured
When injuries occur, it is important for
children to be evaluated by a pediatric
sports medicine specialist. Children are
not just small adults, they experience
different injuries than adults and growth
plates can be affected by certain injuries.
Thus, it is important for young athletes
to be assessed by experts specializing
in treating sports injuries in children.
The Pediatric Sports Medicine Program is part of Miami Children’s nationally ranked pediatric
orthopedics program. Miami Children’s is dedicated to supporting the treatment and prevention
of sports injuries in growing athletes. The program is staffed by two of the region’s top pediatric
sports medicine specialists, Dr. Stephen Swirsky, DO. and Dr. Craig J. Spurdle, MD. www.mch.com
