Local Businesses Appeal to
Appetites to Increase Turnout
By John Bryson

Local politicians and area restaurant
owners are betting they know how to make
sure you vote this coming Tuesday—by
appealing to your stomach.
Starting this past Friday and running all
the way through Nov. 10, area citizens who
vote this Tuesday and present their ‘I Voted’
sticker or voter registration card to
participating merchants can receive a
discount and/or free item with their meals.
The idea was first presented to The
Express by Wilton Manors Mayor Jim Stork
in an interview four weeks ago. Stork said
low voter turnout and the recent elections
fiascos in Broward County prompted him to
do something to lift the spirits of the
electorate.
To counter the recent spate of negative
publicity surrounding South Florida
elections, Eat the Vote’s incentive program
aims to tug at your taste buds.
“Turnout was so low it seemed like we
needed to do something to lighten things up
a little bit,” Stork said. “And since the
September primary, we certainly need to put
a more positive light on the subject.”
The program kicks off with a dessert
reception that is being held at the Science of
Mind Conference Center in Wilton Manors.
Dessert samplings from a variety of the
participating vendors—Stork’s Bakery,
Michael’s Kitchen, Dan Marino’s Town
Tavern, Gibby’s Steaks and Seafood, and HiLife Café—will be available to those who pay
the $20 entry fee.
Proceeds from the reception are being
donated to the nonprofit, nonpartisan
organization Kids Voting Broward—whose
primary mission is to teach children about
the voting process and motivate them to
voice their opinion on the issues.
If the event is successful, there are plans
in the works to eventually expand its
geographic scope to include all of Broward,
Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. In
addition, event coordinator Jules Meyer told
the Sun-Sentinel that voter registration
drives may be held at participating
restaurants in the future.

Actors Leslie Nielsen and Steve
Guttenberg were among the stars who
officially opened the 17th Annual Fort
Lauderdale International Film Festival,
November 1 at Parker Playhouse.
With giant gold shears in hand, the stars
cut through a long strip of film and kicked off
the longest film festival in the world.
FLIFF Executive Director Gregory von
Hausch began the evening’s ceremonies by
presenting a number of guests. He then
introduced a presentation of clips from
Nielsen’s career, which showed the actor’s
evolution from dramtic leading man to
comedy superstar.
After the film montage, von Hausch
awarded Nielsen FLIFF’s Lifetime
Acheivement Award.

Mystical Theologian to Speak
at Religious Science Center
Discussion and Presentation will Focus
on ‘Tantric Transformation of Modern Gays’
By Michael James
Managing Editor
The mystical theologian, author,
speaker and teacher Andrew Harvey will
speak at Religious Science Fort Lauderdale
in Wilton Manors on Nov. 10. Celebrating
the contribution of homosexual mystics to
the world’s mystical knowledge, Harvey
says he will show how homophobia is a
“cultural creation and not part of any ‘divine’
law and demonstrate the existence of a
tradition of gay mysticism in many of the
world’s religions.”
Special attention will be given to Tantric
sexuality and sacred androgyny and to the
need for modern gay mystics to free
themselves from the dogmas and body
hating philosophies of the past and claim
their full divine identity on the “Direct Path.”
Drawing on his own personal experience
of Tantric transformation, as described in
his most recent book, Sun at Midnight: A
Memoir of the Dark Night (Tarcher-Putnam,
2002), Harvey will also share those sacred
practices that have most helped him and
inspired him in his search for a life of
dedicated sacred passion.
On Sunday, Nov. 10, at 11:30am, Harvey
will address the crowd and conduct a
workshop on gay mysticism from 2pm to 5pm.
He will also speak on Saturday, Nov. 9, at
7:30pm on Son of Man, The Mystical Path
to Christ.

Lauderdale since the early 1960s. Religious

Amtrak police were immediately notified
and confirmed Walker had purchased a ticket
from Broward County to Washington, D.C.,
with a connection to California.
“Police in Nashville, Tennessee,
where Walker had a D.U.I. record, also
assisted by providing us with a good set
of fingerprints and photo of our suspect,”

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, BSO Crime Scene
investigators processed the contents of the
plastic bag found in a dumpster and
positively identified Walker. Detectives then
traveled to Emeryville, California, and
arrested Walker as he exited the train.
Walker has been charged with murder

Congregation Etz Chaim Appoints a New Rabbi
Nemiroff to Lead Her First Etz Chaim Service on Friday, Nov. 22
Congregation Etz Chaim, a spiritual home
for South Florida’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgendered (gay) Jews and their friends,
has announced the appointment of Rabbi
Catherine Nemiroff as the Synagogue’s new
Rabbi. Nemiroff received the unanimous vote
of the Synagogue’s board of directors and an
overwhelming majority of the vote of the
congregation at a special congregational
meeting held on Oct. 27.
“I am excited about becoming the Rabbi
of Etz Chaim, and bringing it into the network
of notable congregations that serve the gay,
lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and
heterosexual communities in an open and
dignified manner,” Nemiroff said. “I hope to
bring internal unity, and to create an
atmosphere of warmth and welcome. In doing
so, I hope to reach out to a wider range of
membership, particularly younger people and
families.”
Nemiroff will lead her first Etz Chaim
service on Friday, Nov. 22. A formal installation
will be held at a later date.
Nemiroff was born in New York, and lived
there until she went to college in the Midwest.
She graduated from the University of
Minnesota with a degree in Studio Arts,
working as a private ceramist and
photographer, and as an arts administrator for
performing arts groups.
Subsequently she worked in a computer
company writing, teaching and designing

materials for their sales support and
organizational development groups. She
decided to pursue a career in the rabbinate
while an active founding leader in a new and
growing congregation that was inclusive to
Jews of all lifestyles, in all aspects of
congregation life and employment.
She sat on the founding board, served as
president for three years, taught adult b’nei
mitzvah classes and was probably involved in
every committee at one point or another.
While in rabbinical school, Nemiroff
served congregations in the Southern tip of
California, Washington State and New York.
She completed three different types of
interfaith chaplaincy programs and worked as
an intern with the American Jewish Committee.
Most recently she worked as director of
education at the reform temple of Suffern, New
York. Nemiroff received her master’s in Hebrew
Letters and Rabbinic Ordination from Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion on
May 12, 2002.
Her Rabbinic thesis was titled “Heart
Transplantation in Selected 20th Century
Orthodox Responsa; prohibited and
permitted.” She maintains a strong interest in
bioethical decision-making, along with practical
chaplaincy work.
Congregational leaders say they are
proud of their decision and look forward to
working together with Nemiroff for the
betterment of the Synagogue and South
Florida’s GLBT Jewish community.
“After conducting a nationwide search, we
are thrilled to have found Rabbi Nemiroff, an
outstanding leader who is a perfect match for our
congregation and our community,” said Doree
Benson, president of Congregation Etz Chaim.
“Rabbi Nemiroff’s scholarship and
wonderfully infectious love of Judaism will
elevate our congregation to new levels of
spirituality,” said Michael Greenspan, the
Synagogue’s cantorial soloist. “I look forward
to working with the Rabbi on our weekly Friday
evening services as well as on projects and
holidays throughout our calendar year.”
“We believe Rabbi Nemiroff’s presence
will enrich us all,” said Robin Gross, executive
vice president, and her partner, Elaine Conrad,
president of the CEC Sisterhood.
Founded in 1974, Congregation Etz
Chaim is the third-oldest congregation in
North America serving the GLBT community.
It is affiliated with the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations (Reform Movement)
and the World Congress of GLBT Jewish
Organizations. It includes members from Palm
Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
The congregation holds Friday Night
Services at 8:30pm at the UnitarianUniversalist Church of Fort Lauderdale,
3970 NW 21 Ave. in Oakland Park. For more

Human Rights Campaign
Issues Political Scorecard
Local Democratic Reprentatives Receive High
Marks; Republicans Rated Low to Moderate
By John Bryson

Almost all of the South Florida
delegation of the U.S. House of
Representatives received high marks in the
Human Rights Campaign’s scorecard of
Congress members, which the national gay
rights group released in preparation for
this Tuesday’s mid-term elections.
All four Democratic members—Robert
Wexler, Carrie Meek, Peter Deutsch and
Alcee Hastings—received perfect scores
of 100 percent. Rep. Mark Foley, a
Republican representing areas of Palm
Beach County, received a score of 83
percent.
The three remaining members, all
Republicans, received moderate to low
scores. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (67 precent),
Clay Shaw (33 precent) and Lincoln DiazBalart (17 precent) have not been very
supportive of the HRC or its issues in the
past.
Shaw and Diaz-Balart are the only two
incumbents not being endorsed by the
HRC in this week’s elections. Meek is not
running for re-election, but her son
Kendrick Meek is the Democratic nominee
for her seat and has received the HRC’s
endorsement.
Another candidate endorsed by the
HRC is Carol Roberts, a Democrat, who is
seeking to replace Shaw in the 22nd District.

Stonewall Library Plans 30th Anniversary Celebration
Series of Commemorative Events to be Held Throughout Next Year

Planning is under way for the Stonewall
Library & Archives 30 th anniversary
celebration, a series of commemorative events
to be held throughout 2003.
The library’s board has already
scheduled a kickoff party for January 16 at
The Grand Resort in Fort Lauderdale. The
invitation-only party will include bar service
sponsored by Boardwalk, hors d’oeuvres
donated by Hi-Life Café, pastries from Stork’s
Bakery and flowers from Adam and Eve
Florists.
At a recent brainstorming session, board
members received community input about a
number of possible events to mark the
anniversary. Some of the more popular ideas
included a writing contest, a writers
conference, a wet T-shirt contest, a “youth
poetry slam,” speaking engagements by
authors and gay celebrities, and a gay history
of Fort Lauderdale night.
The presidents of the Stonewall Library and Archives over the years have included

The Stonewall Library was founded in year and a half.
Stonewall has grown into one of the
largest gay libraries in the country. The
lending library now carries more than
10,000 titles as well as videocassettes and
gay films.
It has also gained a reputation as a
valuable resource for gay and lesbian
research projects. “We get calls weekly
from researchers at various universities,”
Beaton said. “We got a wonderful thank
you note from a man who wrote his
dissertation on Anita Bryant.”
The library’s programs include an
authors series, in which gay authors talk
about their work and sign copies of their
books. Last spring, 50 people showed up
at the library to hear Divine’s mother read
from her book about the entertainer.
The library also features an Artist of the

member. A reception for the featured artist is
usually held during the first week of the month.
The Stonewall Library & Archives is

Stonewall Library & Archives
Launches History Recording Project
The Stonewall Library & Archives is
launching a Video Oral History Project to
document and preserve the life experiences
that represent the gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgendered (gay) community. The project
seeks to document American history as it is
lived by individuals.
The project will record not only the
voices and the images of its participants but
also relevant pictures of the documents and
locations.
Stonewall is one of the nation’s major
repositories of information about the gay
community, its history, literature and artistic
expression. The organization is applying for a
grant from the Florida Humanities Council for
initial funding for the project.
The project’s first production will focus
on stories from within the state of Florida. Later
productions, however, will not be confined to
Florida stories.
The Project Committee, directed by
videographer Bill Ward, will be the major
focus of public programs that will include
panel presentations and audience
discussions. Plans for public viewings will
be announced at a later date.

St. Louis Safer-Sex Event
Featured Gay Porn Actor
By Ari Bendersky
Gay.com / PlanetOut.com Network
A St. Louis AIDS group that serves the
African-American community lost funding
this week following an alleged lewd incident
that occurred at a safer-sex awareness
session in July involving a gay porn star.
Dr. Hugh Stallworth, director of the St.
Louis Department of Health, informed
representatives of Blacks Assisting Blacks
Against AIDS (BABAA) on Thursday that
it was pulling the remainder of a $96,000
grant the organization received from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) to fight the spread of syphilis.
In July, BABAA held an event at the home
of its executive director, Erise Williams Jr. The
organization hired a former gay porn star,
Bobby Blake, to speak on the importance of
safer sex to prevent the spread of syphilis and
HIV. Williams said they enlisted Blake because
he is well-known and would draw a crowd.
Blake, whose real name is Edgar Gaines,
appeared at the safer-sex awareness event
wearing nothing but a towel and boots,
Williams confirmed. Two former employees
of BABAA claimed that Blake stripped and
that some of the approximately two dozen
attendees fondled the speaker in a sexual
manner. Williams denied the porn actor
removed his clothing during the night and
that any lewd conduct occurred.
While Stallworth, who is investigating
the incident locally for the CDC, has not been
able to verify the exact events of the night,
he said he reached his decision based on
what Blake was wearing. Stallworth believes
BABAA used federal funding improperly.
“We believe the individual did have a
limited amount of clothes on, and we deemed
it an inappropriate use of federal money,”
Stallworth told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
on Wednesday. “It shouldn’t have been
spent on the way the individual did perform.”
A St. Louis AIDS group lost
funding this week following a
lewd incident that allegedly
occurred at a safer-sex session
involving a gay porn star.
BABAA paid Blake $500 out of the
$96,000 grant to appear at their event to
speak to young people about the importance
of wearing condoms during sex. “People look
up to me,” Blake told the Post-Dispatch. “I
can be a good voice to inform people to
practice safe sex.”
BABAA has temporarily removed
Williams from his post, replacing him with
an interim executive director pending further
investigation. Based on the health
department’s finding, BABAA may have to
repay some of the $96,000 grant, which
accounts for a portion of the reported $1.6
million the agency receives in annual
governmental funding. BABAA’s syphilis
awareness grant officially runs out on Dec.
31, but it can reapply for more government
assistance in 2003.
On Thursday the CDC announced that
syphilis rates in the United States rose in
2001, reversing a 10-year trend. The largest
increases were reported among gay and
bisexual men.

Orlando Gays Debate Whether to Support Republican
AP—Republican leaders in Orlando were
in a quandary after reapportionment
changed House District 36 into a
Democratic bastion with a fifth of the
population either gay or lesbian.
With GOP incumbent Allen Trovillion
leaving the legislature, they thought it
would be impossible for the GOP to again
win the district, which encompasses
downtown Orlando and the metro area’s
urban core.
But then the Republicans found party
member Patrick Howell, a preppy,
photogenic 32-year-old attorney who is
both fiscally conservative and fond of
quoting Ronald Reagan.
He also happens to be gay.
Howell’s candidacy has stirred a
debate among Orlando’s gays and lesbians
about whether a candidate’s sexual
orientation should be more important than
his political orientation when they go to
the polls. His Democratic opponent, Sheri
McInvale, is straight.
The chair of the local Democratic
Party, for one, equated gay Democrats who
support Howell with a “Jew voting for
Hitler.”
If elected, Howell would be Florida’s
first openly gay legislator.
“That’s what my campaign is about,
making the Republican Party more
inclusive,” Howell said.
That’s not how Doug Head sees it.
The Orange County Democratic chairman
said Howell’s candidacy is a cynical
Republican effort to confuse gay voters
about which party best represents them.
Head was roundly criticized by gay and
lesbian groups last summer for the Hitler
remark.
“It’s impossible for a gay candidate
to run in a Republican Party that advances
the agenda of the Republican Party of
today,” Head said recently.
Head noted that Republican Gov. Jeb
Bush said just last week he opposes
overturning Florida’s ban on gays
adopting children. The legislature is also
Republican controlled.

Oregon Same-Sex Registry Still Small After Three Years
AP—Ashland, Oregon’s same-sex registry
is three years old, but the list is still
surprisingly short, city officials say.
The 39th couple, Darcy Hamilton and
Annette Teeples, registered Oct. 10 and held
a minister-sanctioned ceremony and
reception on Sunday. Only four couples,
including Hamilton and Teeples, have
registered in 2002, said Vicki Christensen, a
court clerk.
“We haven’t had any mad rushes or
anything,” she said.
Under Oregon law, same-sex couples
can’t marry, but some cities have registries
that allow them to be legally bound, create
living wills and grant each other power of
attorney.
In Ashland, joining the registry costs $25.
The rate of registration here is low
compared with the number of same-sex
couples documented in Jackson County. The
2000 Census counted 468 unmarried partners
of the same sex in the region.
Leaders in the gay community say that’s
because many people don’t want to share
their living arrangements with the
government.
For Hamilton and Teeples, joining the
registry sets a public example about
validating the existence of same-sex couples.
“What we have is something I’ve
wanted all my life,” said Teeples, the twicedivorced mother of two teenagers.

“It hurt, and I started to feel shameful,

Another GLCC Board Member Resigns
It is a shame that such a hard-working,
dedicated man as Andy Weiser should leave the board
of directors of the Gay and Lesbian Community
Center. I understand the frustration he was under,
and how discouraging it is to work with so little
cooperation and appreciation. He is a very dedicated
man and deserves much praise for his efforts in
fundraising and otherwise.
I have also found that I can no longer work
with the present board and its leadership or lack
thereof. There are several well-meaning and very
hard-working board members. There are also several
on the board that seem in my opinion to be out of
touch with reality.
The present leadership of the board seems to
just want everything to be pleasant. That policy
may work very well in the social world but not in an
organization such as the center. The old saying
“You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet”
applies here. No one seems willing to correct any
member of the staff no matter how they may
antagonize members or organizations in the
community.
I ask the question, does anyone check to see that
staff is not using the center and computers for personal
financial benefit? If that is happening, I think it would
be a clear violation of the law and could mean the
revoking of the center’s tax-exempt status.
The only plans I heard for the raising of much
needed money was a campaign to raise membership
based on the 10th anniversary of the center. I ask
another question: Why would anyone want to join
when the opinion I keep hearing from the
community at large is that the GLCC is a very
boring place. I very much approve of the center
being a place where people can go for help, with
health, education and other matters, but it should
be a fun, exciting place to go and be seen.
Unfortunately, the people that need the
services the center is now trying to provide
either can’t or won’t provide the necessary
money to keep the center going. People such as
Andy, myself and others are tired of giving
money only to feel that it is being wasted. I feel
that if the center is to raise the significant funds
it will need in order to survive and keep growing,
it will have to change its ways and be more
responsive to the whole community, not just
any one or two segments.
As I said before it was with much sorrow
that I resigned from the board. I truly wish the
center the very best. I also wish the best for my
friends that remain on the board. They are
people of high ideals who have worked very
hard. In my opinion, it’s a shame that the
leadership of the board and its staff do not seem
to get the picture.

Editor’s Note
Our publisher, Norm Kent, underwent scheduled surgery this week and was unable to write his
weekly editorial column. In its place, we are running Jennifer Vanasco’s newest column on the
importance of voting.
Those voting in Broward County need to note that their ballot is involved and each voter
should give themselves plenty of time to read each item carefully before making their decision.
Does it Matter Who Gets Your Vote for Governor?
You bet your sweet ass (guess that might not
always be the right assumption) it does. It matters
only if you care who will appoint the future judges
of this state. It matters only if you care about
who will run our universities, our schools. Who
will be a friend to the Gay community and support
us in our quest for equality. Who will look us in
the eye with respect or content. And a heck of a
lot more, rest assured.
The difference between the two candidates
could not be more apparent or for that matter,
startling. Unless you have been fast asleep, you
could not miss the abhorrent unbelievable recent
comments coming out of the mouth of our current
governor, Jeb Bush. He did not support us in the
recent fight to keep our basic human rights, or as
he calls them, “special rights.”
Florida is the only state in the entire country
to deny gay couples (people) the right to adopt
children. He feels that abandoned or neglected
children are better off in roving foster care than
in loving gay couples’ home. The list goes on but
it all comes down to what I call “basic human
respect” for us as fellow human beings.
Bill Mcbride, the Democratic candidate
running against Bush this Nov. 5, really genuinely
believes that gays are just like everyone else—
imagine that. That who we sleep with makes no
difference in who we are as human beings. That
our worth is judged on its merits, without prejudice,
without judgment.
He has shown this not only in his words but
more important, in his actions. He ran the biggest
law firm in Florida and introduced gay partner
benefits. He has openly courted our community
and regularly attends gay functions. More
importantly, he likes us as people, and that rings
even more true for his very lovely, successful
(and totally open-minded) wife as well.
We have an extremely important obligation
this coming election day, and it starts, of course,
with voting. This election is neck and neck. Your
vote and those of your friends will matter.
Your vote really does matter! Use it!

Time to Vote!
The Many Reasons Why You Should Cast Your Ballot
Hey, kids, it’s that time again, the day
when you get to do something that is the
absolute right thing to do. And how often
does that happen? That’s right—it’s almost
election day, and it’s time to vote.
Here are 38 reasons why you should.
You can spend all year putting together
a Halloween costume, but you can’t spend
an hour doing your civic duty? Come on.
Because people all over the world are
fighting for the right to vote.
Because women couldn’t until 1920. So
that the lives of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and
Susan B. Anthony would not have been in
vain.
It takes less than two hours. At my
polling place, it takes less than 20 minutes.
It’s a great way to meet other politically
minded (or at least bleary and coffeedeprived) singles.
You can take off work to do it and grab
a cup of coffee on the way home.
Right now, GLBTs are about 5 percent
of the vote. That carries a lot of political
clout, and it’s brought about a lot of
changes. Now think of what would happen
if we were 10 percent.
It matters. Really.
Don’t like the morons in office? Well,
this is your chance to do something about
it, isn’t it?
Pleased by how things are going? Keep
your representatives in.
Gives you the right to criticize the way
things are going later. “Don’t blame me,”
you can say. “I voted for the other guy.” Of
18
course, if you actually voted for the guy in
question, you can just smile meekly and
change the subject.
If someone took the right to vote away,
you’d be pissed. Why take it away from
yourself?
It will make your fourth-grade teacher
proud.
It’s the most important thing you can
do on a Tuesday.
This is a vital election. The Democrats
and Republicans are battling for control of
the Senate. No matter what side you’re on,
your vote is crucial to your party. Will
President Bush be backed by a Republican
Senate? Will he be countered by a
Democratic one? This is the event of the
year, baby, and it’s all about you. Don’t miss
your chance to be the deciding factor.
If not you, who? Do you really want to
leave the selection of our officials in the
hands of others? There are plenty of antigay conservatives who vote. We need to
out shout their voices with our own.
If you’re lucky, you’ll get a sticker
saying that you voted.
It’s one of the key requirements for
citizenship.
Why would you voluntarily give up this
much power? This is like being on the board
of directors of a company. This is your
chance to advise the country on how you
think things are going.
You get a chance to meet your
neighbors and grouse about politics—or
about football, or the conditions of the local

streets or whatever.
If you could have affected the outcome
of last week’s baseball World Series,
wouldn’t you have wanted to? This is your
chance to affect the game with even higher
stakes.
I don’t care if you don’t care. Just do it.
You can find time to work out? Go to a
bar to see the game? Read the daily paper?
What’s the matter, then?
Your taxes pay their salaries.
Yes, there is a polling place near you
and, yes, it’s not hard to find. Look up the
League of Women voters’ Democracy Net
website and go from there: www.dnet.org (if
you type in your zip code, the site will give
you information about all the candidates
jockeying for your vote.) If you live in Cook
County, a quicker link to find your polling
place is: www.voterinfonet.com.
Have no idea who to vote for? Grab a
copy of the local daily you like best—or of
your friendly neighborhood GLBT paper.
There are plenty of people who are just
thrilled to tell you how you should vote.
You count. So should your vote.
Because people died and fought and
rallied and dreamed and schemed and
suffered and marched to give you this right.
Someone in your family came over by boat
or risked their lives to walk across the border
or took one of the most important plane rides
of their lives in order to give you this right.
Don’t take their struggles for granted.
If this is the only thing you accomplish
on Tuesday, it’s a whole heck of a lot.
by Jennifer Vanasco
Why vote? Why not.
It’s like voting people off the island—
but instead, it’s voting them out of
government. Whoo hoo!
It’s better than reality TV. It’s actual
reality.
It’s a nice walk. Or a nice drive. Or even
if it’s not, just get your butt over there.
You can head off all the annoying
people at work who will nag you about
voting.
It will feel good. Strange, but true.
What better way to start—or end—your
day than by trying to figure out which hole
to punch to vote for your candidate? It’s a
brain teaser! Better than the crossword
puzzle!
Because you had your chance to get an
absentee ballot. You didn’t. So now go get a
real one.
You can use it as an excuse all day.
“Sorry, I can’t do the carpool today—need
to vote.” “Nope, can’t have it to you by
tomorrow—need to vote.” “Hey, I’d love to
feed the cats, but I gotta go vote.” “Boss,
I’d love to listen to your collection of old
Neil Diamond records, but I’ve got to take a
rain check—today I have to vote.”
It’s your right and your privilege. Vote—
for yourself, for your country, for all of us.
No matter whom you vote for, it’s the right
thing to do.

The Real Deal
Remembering Sen. Paul Wellstone
‘The Lionhearted Leader of the Losers and the Left-Out’
Paul Wellstone was 5 feet 5 inches tall,
but he had the capacity to make his Senate
colleagues look small. It was known in the
chamber that Wellstone had no consultant
except his conscience and that he cast careerthreatening votes. He was the lionhearted
leader of the losers and the left-out. He smiled
if you called him a liberal.
His death in a plane crash that also killed
his wife, Sheila, his daughter, Marcia, three
campaign aides and two pilots has
occasioned a flood of real tears and authentic,
choked expressions from people who usually
issue press releases about fallen colleagues.
Sen. Tom Harkin broke down when he tried
to broadcast his love, and Phil Gramm, of all
people, issued the perfect epitaph: “He was
a sweet man.”
The lamentation was general and
unanimous, going far beyond the
heartbroken Minnesotans who gathered at
campaign headquarters to weep and pray and
leave flowers, and far beyond anxious
Democrats who hoped the diminutive
scrapper would help preserve their paperthin majority in the Senate. His death was
treated as a national calamity—honest men
are in short supply. The coverage was so
comprehensive it suggested that the whole
country bought ex-senator Pat Moynihan’s
long-ago description of Wellstone as “a gift
to the nation.”
His departure leaves a gaping hole in
the Senate. He was irreplaceable. How many
senators are praised for their humility and
sweet nature? They have no other blithe
spirit like the ex-professor who was proud of
his recognition by the National Wrestling
Hall of Fame. He was difficult to demonize.
He had guileless blue eyes, dimples and an
air of eager kindness. He wasn’t a stuffed
shirt, which it is so easy to become as a
member of the “world’s greatest deliberative
body.” He wasn’t a hair shirt, as principled
loners often are. There was no breast-beating,
and no browbeating of the timid either.
Wellstone’s first famous kamikaze vote
occurred in 1996, when Democrats thought
they absolutely had to vote for Bill Clinton’s
welfare reform bill. The Republican chorus
against welfare queens, welfare cheats and
vodka drinkers had reached a climax, and
incumbents were warned of the consequences
of voting no on Clinton’s pledge to “end
welfare as we know it.” Wellstone found it too
harsh and bravely voted no.
As he was hurrying back to Minnesota
to campaign that year, I ran into him on the
Capitol steps. He knew his colleagues
counted him a dead man walking, but he was
of good cheer. “I have wonderful people
working for me in every county. They know
what they are doing.” They did. He won.
This month Wellstone faced another
perilous vote, and he was in an even tighter
race for re-election. Party leaders said that it
would be madness to vote against George
Bush’s war in Iraq. He was one of 23
Democrats to say no to a new Gulf of Tonkin
resolution. He went home to Minnesota to

John and John
Painting on a Beige Canvas
The Challenge of Redecorating a New House
John and I are home again. A house
becomes a home when you are able to
breathe your own life into it. It is a symbol of
who you are at whatever particular stage of
life you are experiencing. Creating a home is
like creating a tapestry rich with color and
texture and emotion, pulling many different
strands of thread together.
Two weeks ago, we moved into this beige
townhouse and began the process of creating
our home out of a house. When I say a beige
townhouse, I mean a very beige townhouse;
beige walls, beige carpets, beige tile, beige
countertops. Everything was that light brown,
mushroom, taupe, beige color. You have to
wonder why on earth two gay men who love
color would buy a beige townhouse, and the
answer is simple—the floor plan. The
background color can be changed.
We were lucky enough to connect with
a painter who had worked with us before and
began almost immediately painting the first
floor den a wonderful rich red, the Great Room
what is called clay pot, the master bedroom a
rich purple and the guest room a periwinkle
blue. Actually, the colors were very similar to
what we had used before, only the shades
were different. John was responsible for the
choices made, as he is the color expert in our
relationship. For a couple of days, he would
smear paint on the wall and then race back to
Home Depot to try something else. We both
would watch the painted splotches in the
daylight and in the night light to see if we
liked them. The red, blue and clay pot were
no problem, but the purple we had to think
20
about. Was it too dark? Was it too bright?
Was it too grape, too purple? Finally we
decided to just do it. And it turned out to be
exactly what we wanted. With the
background painted, we were ready to add
texture and depth to our home.
Much of our furniture seems to fit into
this new space. What hasn’t, we offered to
John’s twin sons who are new first-time
homeowners. Over the years with
each move that we have
made, we have given
furniture to my children
and to John’s older
children, but not until now
were the twins in a position
to use our castoffs. Now
they are, and we gladly
gave them what we
couldn’t use in this house.
We feel very good about
giving our children furniture
and artwork that no longer fit a
wall space, and we love going into
their homes and seeing “old friends” in new
settings. However, sometimes we wish that
we could get back some of the things that we
have given away. But a gift given is a gift
given. Besides, being the shoppers that we
are, we love the excuse to search out every
nook and cranny for whatever piece of
furniture or artwork that we need.
Our most frequent visitor has been
John’s daughter and 2-year-old grandson,
David. Melissa has brought David over to
get acquainted with his two granddaddies.
www.ExpressGayNews.com • November 4, 2002
CYMK
For whatever reason, David has dubbed me
the “Green Granddaddy,” and John simply,
“Granddaddy.”
On our first weekend here, my first gay
friend that I made after coming out came for
supper. I met Rob 17 or 18 years ago in a
support group for gay married men who were
struggling with what to do in that situation.
It is the same group in which I later met John.
It felt really good to
connect with him again
and even better to connect
with a gay man. We had
been so busy unpacking,
and choosing colors, and
arranging furniture and
picking out lighting that
we had forgotten the sheer
enjoyment of being with a
kindred soul. What fun to
sit at the dinner table and
talk gay trash—who is
doing who, where and
how often, and, more
importantly, where in Atlanta are they doing
it.
Later that same weekend, my daughter
and daughter-in-law arrived to spend
Saturday night. They had been to an art show
that my former wife had had in Macon, and
were returning home. It was good to have
the two of them in the house and to know
that we can comfortably have overnight
guests.
On Sunday, my grandson arrived with
his dog and girlfriend to have lunch with his
By John Templeton
mother, aunt and us. It was actually a rather
intense time, as he is having serious legal
problems resulting from his problems with
drugs and, from John’s and my prospective,
his unwillingness to face the problem and
deal with it. It is important for John and me
to remember that problems in the family are
just that and not ours to take on and fix. We
have our own life to live and must do so.
So we are home. We have created a
colorful space out of beige beginnings, and
have filled it with things and people we love.
The walls are painted, the furniture is
arranged, the artwork is hanging on the walls,
and the place is swirling with family and the
problems that arise as a result. What we said
we wanted, we have. There were certainly
moments during the pass few weeks when I
thought that I wanted my old life back—barechested men walking the streets, a gay gym,
picking mangos off my trees. But here we are
carving a new life: jeans and not shorts, LA
Fitness and not Vinnie and the guys of Better
Bodies, sweaters and not tank-tops, cold
weather instead of the blazing sun.
It is a new life, a new home, a new canvas
on which to create. Each day is a new day to
discover what new things await us at this
point in our lives. We are very busy painting
on this new canvas.
John Templeton is retired and lives

DJ Pride
Halloween Party Celebrates Victory
Circus of Souls Benefits SAVE Dade
By Mary Damiano
Arts & Entertainment Editor
H
alloween is the time to let
imaginations run wild and fantasies
come true.
The attendace of 4,000 people at the
Seventh Annual Belle Meade Halloween
Party, Saturday, Oct. 26, at the American
Legion Post in Miami was certainly a dream
come true for its organizers.
The theme of the event, “Circus of
Souls,” allowed for some outrageous
costumes. Revelers got into the party mood
and danced the night away to music provided
by DJ Q-Ban and DJ Pride.
The event was also a victory party for
SAVE Dade, and a community celebration
for successfully defending Miami-Dade
County’s Human Rights Ordinance.
The Belle Meade Halloween Party
began as a private party in 1996 at the home
of Luis Gonzalez and David Treece, who,
along with William Vallennilla, founded the
event. The first party attracted about 400
people. By the third year, the hosts began
accepting donations at the door for SAVE
Dade. By 2000, the crowd grew to 2,400
people, and over $25,000 was raised to help
fund SAVE Dade’s efforts to defend the
Human Rights Ordinance.
The party outgrew its private home
setting and was moved to the American
Legion Post to accommodate the growing
crowds. Organizers made sure that no
detail was overlooked. Each of the four
indoor spaces and the outdoor space was
decorated by a different designer.
The attendance of over 4,000 people was
more than what was expected, but not
surprising given the event’s popularity.
According to its founders, this has become
the Halloween event.
