President’s Message
2014 is nearing an end and we are preparing to welcome a new year. I would like to
once again thank each and every volunteer out
there who work to make things happen! Without you, there would not be horsey events to
attend or organizations to be part of, whether they are local, provincial or national. The CMHA would not exist if it were not for
the volunteers. That being said, we are always looking for people
to fill various positions on the board of representatives. If you are
interested, please contact your local director, myself, or Nancy at
the CMHA office.
I would like to personally congratulate all the Canadian
exhibitors who were successful at the World Championship in
Oklahoma. Canada was well represented in a variety of disciplines. Job well done!

Administrator’s Missive
Photos are such a wonderful gift; a moment
in time that helps us preserve memories. Some
of us have seen the growth of the photography
industry from Brownies to using our cell phones
and everything in between. There is almost no
reason to not have a photo of our Morgans anymore! Having said that, I would like to remind everyone about the
Historical Photo Project.
On the CLRC website, Morgan pedigrees are available to view
and you can have a photo of your Morgan(s) posted with their pedigree. This is a free service; you just need to send me a photo either
by mail or e-mail. I will then upload the photo to the site and it
is there in perpetuity. If you have never checked out this site, I
encourage you to do so. Go to www.clrc.ca/cgi-bin/query.cgi?_association=91 and look up your favourite Morgans. I have included
a typical side view shot that is desirable for the pedigree page.
Print photos that are mailed to me will be returned to you.

CMHA Facebook page. I like to change the photos once a year on
the website to keep it fresh and show off the beautiful Morgans
that live across Canada. Send me your favourite pics and they will
be considered for either site and remember, we want variety! Trail,
show, kids, humorous-we need every type.
If you’re sending a photo taken by a professional photographer,
please make sure the photo is purchased and you have permission
to use it.
We encourage people to use the CMHA Facebook group page but
please remember to only use photos that you have permission to use.
Any photo posted must not have any copyright stamps. Photos that
are posted that have copyright stamped across them are considered
stolen property and cannot be used on the website or FB page.

Editor’s Input
Welcome to our final issue for 2014! It’s been
a great year of growth and input for the magazine,
and I would like to thank all of our advertisers for
your enthusiastic support, as well as the CMHA
Magazine Committee and the board for their guidance and patience. This publication can only be its best with the
contributions of many. I hope you will take part in 2015 if you do
not already!
Thanks to my writer-on-call, Heather Baiano for dedicating
herself to the Grand National article in this issue. Heather attended the show with her gelding a few years ago, and I think her
insights from that experience have added a wonderful element to
make this article not only informative but intesting. Enjoy!
Thanks also to our sister publication, The Morgan Horse at
AMHA, for their article on our Morgan Para-lympian Ashley
Gowanlock, who is not only a dedicated Morgan enthusiast, but
a dedicated horse-woman. We are proud to have her representing
both our nation and our breed a the world level.
As I watch our two pet goats helping remove leaves from my
yard (they’ll leave plenty of something else in exchange-but that
means greener grass next summer!), I am happily in denial that
it should be winter and not fall out there right now. So it takes an
extra nudge to remind me that the 2015 Stallion Issue is coming
right up, quickly!
The deadline for stallion advertising is going to be shortly
after you get this issue in your hands. To promote your stallion
and his get, please let me know what size ad you are planning to
do and then forward the ad materials by December 15. It requires
extra time to put this issue together, so the sooner you have materials on my desk, the easier it will be to print on time. All it takes
is a photo JPG, his name, and a sentence or two to introduce him.
Or produce your own fantastic ad and send that! I am always
happy to address questions by e-mail or phone, just let me know.
While many people are finding the internet is a great way to
attract attention to their breeding stallions, every study (and comment) shows that the print promotions really anchor that horse
in people’s memory, as well as allowing them to refer back to it
when it’s time to make a breeding decision. Take advantage of
some of the best advertising rates in the horse industry, and get
your stallion in sight!
I would like to thank our Alberta Zone Director Kelly Wagar
for finding the time to bring the Alberta Breeder’s and Owner’s
ad back in this issue. If your farm is missing, it just takes a quick
phone call or e-mail to add your information. The same goes for
each Zone ad. This is the finger-tip reference for many people,
resulting in calls even after many years. It is an economical and
trouble-free way to promote whatever services your farm offers.
Please contact your Zone rep soon-in time for the January issue
would be great!
I hope that the fall weather has given you plenty of time to
get your Morgans and home ready for winter, and that you will
have many peaceful hours to reflect on your accomplishments for
2014. And perhaps even stop to make wish lists from those garden catalogs that magically appear in the mailbox right after the
holidays! May you have a content and festive holiday season and
I for one will look forward to seeing what you and your Morgans
accomplish in the New Year!

Hello youth!

in the Morgan Grand Nationals in OKC! Great to
see such wonderful Canadian representation!
The Alberta Youth
Challenge was held at the
Alberta Morgan Horse
Show at the end of August. Congratulations to Maya Beakhouse, she was the
overall Champion and the Reserve Champion was Robyn Davies.
Unfortunately the Ontario Youth Challenge had to be cancelled due to lack of
participation. The Saskatchewan Youth
Challenge is being held on November
20th. Good luck to those taking part!

January 15th, 2015 is the deadline for
the Outstanding Youth Award System contest, Sportsmanship & Scholarship Award
nominations. For the scholarship award,
all that is required is a nomination letter
written by someone who recognizes your
contribution to the Morgan world and displays sportsmanship to others. The scholarship award is given to a member who
is entering post-secondary education. A
short essay or video is required explaining
your contribution to the Morgan world in
any capacity, big or small. You could win
$250! Rules and forms are posted online
on the youth page of the CMHA website.
For those of you who have some down-
time this winter, try out the
Horsemastership levels!
They are a great way to
learn about the Morgan as
well as general horse care
and management. Organize a day at the barn with
your horsie friends and
make it a fun educational

my first time photographing Morgans because normally I photograph stock horses. It was a such a neat experience and it was
very challenging to get the timing down! I had a blast at the show

Marron Brown
Hi fellow Morgan horse lovers! My name is Marron Brown,
and my obsession with the breed started when I was ten years old
and rode my first Morgan named “Deacon.” From the moment
I put my foot in the stirrup I knew that I utterly loved the breed.
They are gentle, caring and have an abundance of personality!
I began riding when I was nine years old at Porter’s Equine
Center. Eventually, I began spending the majority of my weekends there, helping out and watching these incredible animals
work. I showed my first horse, Arboria Surefire, at the Greater
Boston Charity Show in 2011. Throughout the year I began
showing, I became interested in riding saddle seat
and then transitioned to riding a small mare named
Dragonsmeade Andromeda. Halfway through
the 2012 show season we decided that we would
make the journey to Oklahoma City and attend
the Grand National and World Championship
Morgan Horse Show. Working through hours of
practice and nerves, I walked out of the coliseum
with a third place ribbon in the World Championship Classic Pleasure 13 And Under class with
tears rolling down my face and the world’s biggest smile. In November 2012, I purchased my
very first horse from Falmouth, Maine. My very
special gelding, by the name of KJM Everlasting
Soul, “Gunner,”has carried me through two show
seasons so far and counting!
In March 2014, we visited Indian Creek Farm
in Indiana with my current trainer, Katie Yereance of Sea-Vu Farm in Boothbay, Maine. We were looking for
an English pleasure horse. We tried several horses while there,
and found a very beautiful mare named Indian Creek Bellaire.
I completely adored her disposition, and in no time, I made the
decision to purchase “Honey.” In the words of Kurt Hufferd
and Shanna Gish (trainer and assistant trainer at Indian Creek),
“Everyone loves Honey!” This is very true! She continues to be
the barn favorite!
In October of this year, I was fortunate enough to travel to
Oklahoma City and compete once again in the World show with
both Gunner and Honey. Competing in what are some of the
most competitive divisions, 14-15 Hunter Pleasure and 14-17
English Pleasure, I still came out of the ring laughing and smiling along with my trainer, Katie and my fellow Sea-Vu team
mates. Both of my horses are in training a nine hour (one-way)
drive from where I live but I regularly travel there to train. It is a
challenge to balance school, training, work and my other showing (I also show dairy cows and work part time on my brother’s
dairy farm), but I enjoy it all.
I am 16 years old and live in a very small community in Nova
Scotia called Upper Musquodoboit. My two very loving parents,

me in every show,
every lesson and
every
nine-hour
drive to the barn.
I think it is very
important for youth
to be involved with
the Canadian Morgan Horse Association because it
ensures the future
growth of the association. Where so
many youth are on
social media, I think
by sharing stories,
information,
pic-
tures etc., it promotes this beautiful breed to the fullest. I encourage everyone to ride a Morgan once in his or her life, but just know
you will share an instant connection and it will last a lifetime!
Catriona Kozijn
Hi, my name is Catriona Kozijn. I was born in Duncan, B.C.
and am 15-years old and now live in Leduc County, Alberta.
I live with my parents (Skye and Garett), my younger brother
(Collin), and my sister and her boyfriend (Andrea and Neil).
We live on three acres with an outdoor riding arena, a shop,
and a pasture. We kind of live in a zoo with 5 horses, 2 goats, 4
dogs and a few other small animals.
I own three of the horses, two show Morgans Merlin and Twister, and my miniature horse Millie. I attend Ecole Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School and am in grade ten. But let’s forget
about that and move on.
How did I become involved in horses? When I was three
years old I entered my very first show, doing leadline on a beautiful Morgan mare named Willow, at the AMHS where my sister

Make Your Horse do Sit-ups!

So you’re thinking I’m crazy! How do I make my horse do
sit-ups? Well maybe not in the true sense of the word, but there is
a way! Just like us, it’s important for your horse to have a strong
core. Why? The stronger the core (abdominal) muscles, the stronger the horse’s topline will be.
Many people believe that a strong back comes from having
strong back muscles, which is incorrect. Yes, we want the back to
be well-muscled and correctly developed, but that all starts with
developing the abdominal muscles first.
The main muscles of the back, longissimus dorsi & iliocostalis, actually act to “lock” the back down, which is not what we
want the horse to do. We want these muscles to stay relaxed and
supple when the horse is working. The softer these muscles stay,
the easier it will be for your horse to round, bend laterally and
carry/pull weight.
Do this little exercise; sitting or standing, contract your back
muscles only. What happens? Your back arches. Pretend you are
a horse, you’ve just put yourself into an inverted frame and you
move stiffly. Uncomfortable isn’t it? Now, contract your abdominal muscles…your back will round or, in horse terms, it will bascule. Bascule is a goal we should all aim for when working our
horses. Of course more goes into bascule than just a strong core,
but it’s a start.
So which muscles act to lift the back? These are the abdominals
and the horse has four pairs; external obliques, internal obliques,
rectus abdominus and transverse abdominus. Rectus abdominus
is the main muscle that runs on either side of the horse’s midline
under the belly. It is this muscle that we can target directly with a
couple easy exercises. So when these abdominals are strong, the
back muscles can remain relaxed which allows the horse to bascule. Horses that are deep from loin-to-groin have well developed
abdominals. The ideal is for this loin-to-groin depth to match the
heart girth as best it can.
There are many different training techniques and exercises to
help correctly develop the abs, such as trotting poles, but that is
personal preference and that’s not what I want to focus on. I want
to give you a couple different stretches that will compliment your
horse’s muscle development. Young or old, in training or for pleasure, these stretches are very beneficial. It is recommended that
stretches never be performed on cold muscles, so do these after
exercise or a good grooming. When trying these for the first time,
it is best to have a second handler for safety.
1. The Abdominal Lift or Tummy Tickle
The idea of the abdominal lift is to directly stimulate the abdominal muscles so that the horse must contract them, therefore
lifting their back.
l Stand on one side of your horse
l Take your fingertips and rub them against your horse’s belly
for 10 seconds
l Watch your horse’s back, you should see it rise.
Every horse is different, so start with light pressure and increase
it according to your horse’s
reaction. Do this exercise
three times, giving the horse
a 10-second rest in between.
Do this every day.
2. The Gluteal Scratch or
Pelvic Tilt
The gluteal scratch targets the lumbar back span.
By stimulating the gluteal muscles (the muscles
on top of the hindquarters [HQ]) the horse tucks
their HQ underneath them,
tipping their pelvis and
stretching the lumbar back.

l Get them to hold the stretch as long as possible
Do the stretches until the carrots are gone, one per side! If
you find your horse swings his butt around to try and reach the
carrot, you can put them up beside a wall (see photo) so that they
bump into it and it stops them from trying to turn. These carrot stretches are very easy and simple to perform and extremely
beneficial for your horse. Do these daily. Take your time with
these stretches and remember to be consistent and fair. It is best
to do these stretches on good footing to minimize slipping and
remember to stretch only when the muscles are warm. I hope
you find these helpful, your horse will love you for it!

First Young Adult Alliance Scholarship
SHELBURNE, VT—The American Morgan Horse Association Young Adult Alliance (YAA), a group of 18-40 year old amateur and professionals working together to strengthen the Morgan
breed, announces that Joshua Noble of Rowley, Massachusetts,
has been awarded the inaugural YAA judging scholarship. The
first Professional Development Project created by this passionate
group, the $1,500 scholarship is awarded to one individual aged
21-40, professional or amateur, who is interested in attaining their
Morgan R judging card.

Judge Chris Cassenti. Noble’s application essay was what stood
out the most, however, and expressed his sincere desire to continue his education through judging school and to give back to the
breed through his contributions to the judging pool.”

The Memorable Black Beauties
of Jean & Ann Bridges
An historical spotlight on a remarkable
mother-daughter team of New Brunswick
equestrians, and on Mo and Tina, their
well-known and well-rounded black Morgan horses
At age four the black 1979 Morgan
colt, Muhammud, bred by Lynn Pierce
of Welsford, NB, captured the heart of
a Woodstock, New Brunswick teenager
named Ann Bridges in search of a new
horse. Ann’s mother, Jean, helped her to
start the young horse under saddle, and in
the following years they attended clinics in
many equestrian disciplines from jumping
to driving to dressage, adding yet one more
sport to their activities in 1989 when the
horse was ten years old. The new pursuit,
competitive trail riding, quickly turned
into another full blown success.
In 1991, Ann and Mo competed in
the Atlantic Coast Games as members
of the gold medal New Brunswick Distance Riding Team, and in the same year
they qualified for the New Brunswick
Driving Team. In 1992, Muhammud was
the first Morgan in Canada to receive
the Silver Medallion Versatile Morgan
Award from the Canadian Morgan Horse
Association.
Carolyn Wanamaker, well-known
New Brunswick equestrian, attributes
the horse’s successful performance in so
many disciplines to his ability to change
his appearance and way of moving, depending on the type of competition, one moment showing in trail
horse class, the next in saddle seat classes and then again putting
in a polished performance in English hunter.
Small wonder Mo was not to remain the only black Morgan
horse in the Bridges’ barn!
In 1990, Jean searched for a new horse to be her equine partner in distance riding, by then her favorite equestrian discipline.
A family in Maine had a black Morgan mare bred in Minnesota
for sale, Spring Hills Justina, and Jean went to look at her. On that
occasion the 10 year old mare, tall, elegant and animated, turned
out to be a beautiful handful, but Jean saw in her an abundance
of the qualities she was looking for: soundness and heart, and she
decided to bring the mare home.
Like her stablemate Mo, the new Bridges’ Morgan received
an all-round equine education. She and her owner-rider attended
clinics in flatwork and over fences and spent even more hours

schooling and conditioning on nearby wooded trails; it takes an enormous amount of
on-going effort to create and maintain a wellhoned competitive distance horse.
Jean, Ann and the Morgans had fun doing
other things too; they even performed in a
musical ride together, and in 1995 Tina was
the second Morgan, after Muhammud, to receive the CMHA’s Silver Medallion Versatile
Morgan Award. The year after that, she won
the Gold Medallion Award, followed by Platinum in the next year. In 1998 Jean and Tina
competed on the national level taking part in
the Canadian Trail Riding Championships
and winning the Individual Silver Medal, just
short of the Gold by only 1 point.
Mo passed away in 1997, leaving a huge
empty gap in the barn and in the lives of his
owners and many other friends. Tina and Jean
carried on, achieving many more highlights in
an uncommonly long and brilliant equestrian
career which saw them placing consistently
at the top in every type of distance competition they entered -- in a sport where everyone
knows, “to complete the ride is to win.” And
in 2002, Tina was the first ACTRA horse to
complete 5,000 competitive miles.
Over the years. Tina and Jean have racked
up a total of 5,500 competitive miles – and
insiders know that in this sport a horse and
rider need to go at least three conditioning
miles for each competitive mile completed.
Not only were Jean and Tina a winning
team on the trail, they also helped others on
the rides to successfully complete the distance, offering to share
their experience and company.
Long term ACTRA competitor, Sylvia Gillies, and her horse,
Tristan, saw a lot of Tina’s backside -- close up. “Tina’s butt,”
Sylvia wrote, “was our saving grace. If you had a kooky horse
you got behind Tina and your fears were eased. If you needed
brakes going down a steep hill, you ran your horse up against
Tina’s behind and she gave them [brakes] to you. If your horse
pooped out going uphill you just grabbed her tail.”
Sadly, inescapably, Tina’s long, happy and very successful
life came to an end in 2007 at age 26. She left behind a huge
empty space as well as a stash of cherished memories to treasure
for Jean and her family -- and countless other friends; it’s now
up to another black Morgan mare, Skye ‘Bridges’, to try fill the
tracks left by Tina’s hooffalls, which never seemed to falter and,
on some other plane, may never fade away.

Getting to know our
Versatile Morgan Platinu
Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li
We did not choose any particular breed or bloodline, it
was all a matter of chance. I was doing work with a breeder’s
Morgan horses and he offered us the unborn foal as payment. We named him Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li*. With “Amadeus” (Latin for Love of God) being the breeder’s prefix, and
my love of music, “Mozart” was an easy choice. “Ara-Li” became our prefix, chosen for our two children Aaron and Lila.
Mozart is old type with 100% Lippitt Morgan bloodlines.
We have taken him to many shows, trail rides/drives, horse
fairs, New Brunswick Morgan Demonstration Days, judged
pleasures and different types of clinics. We also opened up
our farm many years to take part in New Brunswick Open
Farm days.
We consider Moe “home schooled,” as he has never had
any professional training.
Carriage Driving is his forte but he has been a willing participant in anything we have asked him to do from judges
pleasure to fun eventing. His favourite things are obstacle driving and jumping.
He likes to work, and at home when I am doing things with
the other horses he becomes jealous. The first time I noticed this I
wasn’t sure what was happening. He started making some pretty
nasty looking faces at me. The solution was to shut the barn door
so he could not see the ring and make sure he gets his time and
attention. Now that he is semi-retired, he and I go for long hacks
in the countryside, do some clinics and fun events.
Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li* has been named “Lippitt of the
Year” four times by The Lippitt Club, selected as the Lippitt Mor-
gan who has generated the greatest amount of favorable notice
for the Lippitt Morgan in the preceding year. He also received
from the Lippitt Club the Allen Major’s Award for competition.
We traveled to Tunbridge, Vermont twice to attend the Lippitt
Country Show and receive these awards in person. While there, in
a pilgrimage of sorts, we visited the farm where Figure is buried.
Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li* is the fifth Morgan to receive the
Supreme Justin Morgan Honours since the system was established in 1973. This achievement allows the placement of an asterisk (*) after his name as recognition.
He is the first to receive the CMHA Supreme Justin Morgan
Honours and Platinum Versatile Morgan Medallion Award.
Mozart received too many show Championships, NBEA year
end awards, CMHA zone and national awards over his 19 years
to list, but his highlights are Lippitt of the Year four times, The
Allen’s Major Award, four CMHA Superior Awards, CMHA Supreme Justin Morgan Award, and CMHA Platinum Versatile Morgan Medallion Award.
At 14.2-hands, I have often called Moe our little-big horse,
as he has a huge heart and like the original Figure, will rise up to
any challenge. He is very special to our family. Lila once said he
is like a little brother. Moe and I have a special bond; I often feel
he thinks I am his mother. He is our horse of a lifetime and these
achievements have been very rewarding.

Cas-sel Canadian Classic
When someone asks about my Morgan, Cas-sel Canadian
Classic, a billion stories come to mind, especially when so many
others have experienced “CC's” quirky character!
The whole family starts to laugh about her flushing her mouth
in the pail of water with backwash or to make sure to knock it
over so no one can drink out of her pail. The day the girls tested
CC to see if she knew the colour of her pail (burgundy), she
proved that she indeed did and gave the what-for to another horse
that did not respect her property.
Love at first JPG describes Lynn Danyluck with her black
mare. “I met CC through a photo when she was 5 months old
and placed a deposit on her two months later. We finally met in
January. She is a bit sassy and respectively confident. The Casselman’s who bred her carefully plan their breedings and I was able
to meet several members of her pedigree while I was there.
CC stands out at every event she attends. She has represented
the Morgan at not only breed and equine events, but other places
horses do not normally go. My family has made it our mission
to work with people who have barriers in their lives and do not
have the opportunity to enjoy horses as they would like to. So CC
tolerates trips into the city to work with elders, and those with
physical and mental concerns. Some scream to communicate delight and she stands quietly. She shows concern with sick people
and gives hugs and love all on her own. She lets children sit between her legs and play with her elbows, standing until we solve
the problem and give her directions. She was born to be a therapy
horse and I saw this when she first met my daughter who was
three-years at the time. I was very impressed with her percentage
and success in the Alberta Horse Improvement Program. When
she was only two she brought home the championship for the
halter horses at the Thorsby Horse Show. In harness she is picture
perfect and this also comes naturally for her. Although like many
Morgans, she hates having to wear blinders as she wants to know
where the cart is behind her.
The only problem we have with CC is that she absolutely has
to take a nap at 2:30 PM, no matter what. If we are at a show and
it is the same time as the showmanship class, she’ll come in walking like a drunk and will barely trot. If I insist on going ahead, her
payback is a good roll in the sand, which is her favourite habit.
CC is also famous for unpacking my trailer. She will reach in
and pull everything out until she finds what she wants. If she does
not want something, she puts it back in.
When the judge Lavern Schimdt claimed we are a reflection of our horses, CC was five-years old and was so in heat she
could not walk properly while gazing a blue-black stud during
the showmanship line-up. We had to walk in front of Schmidt for
judging and I said, "I am sorry sir, but today I am not reflection of
CC and for today I will dismiss your comment." We did receive
sixth place, however I am not sure he rated her backend as a good
park out or just did not realize she left her bum on the outside of
the arena by that stud!
At a clinic we attended, CC had to share a stall with our 34inch high pony Apache. CC was in such a snit about that situation,
as he stood up under her belly and got stuck. Although she loves
her ponies, she does not like them under her belly and the resulting panic was chaos! Chris Erwin saved me by pulling me out of
the stall by my hoodie. His wife Katherine was doing the demo
on alpha mares, and CC was picked as the example. Poor Apache
had to stay on my trailer for the rest of the clinic in between being
the model for the Tellington Jones Touch demo and the miniature
pony demo!
With so much personality and winning abilities, who would
not want to brag up a storm? I would crawl through a pig pen
of dirt to tell another story of her! For CC I will do just about
anything!
She has only let me down once on a trail ride when she refused to go up the trail. I respected her decision and chose another route. She was fearful but she finished the ride (later than
I hoped). Afterwards we were to find out there was a cougar in
that section, as verified by the Park Ranger. Since we have had a
cougar attack on our farm, she was understandably reluctant to go
further. I am grateful she was aware of her surroundings!
CC is indeed all lady and all heart. She takes pride in what she
does. She rules her herd members with class and has empathy for
any injured or rescued parties. If someone is being mean to another horse, either by hitting with the reins, spurring, or yarding, she
becomes very upset. We do not use such techniques at our place
and I cannot ride beside any aggressive riders. The two words that
describe her are Heart and Class. I am blessed with this Morgan!

Canadians made their mark at this year’s Morgan Grand National & World Championship Show. There were the campaigners
with years of experience, as well as some horses who have just
recently begun showing. A big congratulations to the horses, riders and trainers (and we can’t forget the parents) from this recent
show. There is something magical about riding in the Grand National ring and it doesn’t matter where you come from.
K-Lyn Stable from Alberta, under the direction of Deborah
Davies who is both the trainer and instructor, rocked the parade
class with the three horses brought from home. FCF Fandango,
affectionately called “Llama,” was ridden by Robyn Davies to
a Reserve Champion finish. This was the gelding’s fifth year of
going to the show, so he was his usual self, which is a “hot little
thing” according to Davies. The other geldings from K-Lyn, Morgan Hill Monster Mash and LV Kinkade, came in third and fourth
respectively, ridden by Skye and Deborah Davies.
Davies understands how hard it is for judges when
doing the large classes. During those classes, she says she

wouldn’t want to be a judge. Davies mentioned this when speaking about the other classes her horses showed in.
This was only Monster Mash’s second year in the show ring.
He was ridden by Skye Davies in Classic Equitation 14-17 and
Classic Pleasure 16-17. She had good rides and was very pleased
with her Morgan. Davies says his performance this year means,
“Next year here we come!”
LV Kinkade went very well in his classes of Hunt Seat Equitation with Robyn, placing 13 out of more than 30 Morgans. He
also achieved a sixth place in the competitive Road Hack class.
As well as taking her own horses, Davies took Toni Benning’s mare, Unconditional. “Little Vicky” as she’s known, has a
champion-sized heart in her pony-sized body. She was ridden by
Davies herself, in the roadster class.
This show was old news for all of K-Lyn’s horses and they all
settled well after shipping easily as they are well used to going on
the road. As Davies said, “it’s the owner and trainer’s responsibility to see the horses do all these things well, as you want to see
well-adjusted and rested horses for the ring.”
Sanche Performance Horses attended this year as well. Sandra
Sanche brought two geldings, Saralin’s Conductor (“Earl”) and
TLRM Shadowfax.
Earl was ridden by Georgina Sanche and the pair came home
with a list of wins, with a top ten in Grand National Classic Seat
Equitation 14-17, Top 10 World Champion Classic Seat Senior
BMF Whisper of Love stepped up to several top ribbons
with owner Nathalie Langstaedtler in the irons.

17 and Under. Because of her winning rides, Georgina was finally
able to ride in the Saturday night parade of equitation champions.
Though Earl is a fantastic Morgan, Sanche says he does have
his “Earlisms.” It turns out the gelding is not the easiest to do a
pattern on. During the World Equitation class, Sanche told Georgina to “dazzle them on the rail, because he may just be naughty
for the pattern.” Earl decided to spice things up by doing just the
opposite, and after adding a 360-degree spin on the rail, he performed the cleanest pattern of his career.
This fine gelding has traveled to Oklahoma three times. He
needed no special preparation for the trip, and now has a couple
weeks off before he gets back to work.
It was a first time for TLRM Shadowfax, or “Dante,” to enjoy
the rings at the Grand National along with his first-time owner,
Nicole Kroesch. She just bought this green-broke Morgan in May
of this year. This pair competed in Road Hack-Hunt Seat finals.
The class of 22 horses was a bit rough, with many horses bumping into each other during the class. However, both horse and
rider handled the traffic well. They also achieved a Top 10 in both
Bridle Path Hack and Hunter Hack. Since it was Dante’s first time
and he didn’t have much travelling experience, a few days before
the trip he was put on some different feed to help prepare him for
the journey. He did well on the trip to Oklahoma, and took to the
rings well. Although he did let it be known in the last three hours
of the trip, he was eager to be done travelling. Now that he’s done,
he has a month off, then he’ll be back to work preparing for a
jumper series. Next year, let’s hope to see him in Oklahoma in the
jumper division!
Although most of the trip was uneventful, Sanche did have
a tire blow out in Fargo, North Dakota on the way home to add
some excitement to the journey. All horses took it in stride. For
Sanche Performance Horses, the weather was great, people were
wonderful, and the horses were awesome.
Another Alberta stable, LCM Stables, home of Lorelei Friedrick and Megan and Courtney Pack, came to the National this
year. Though this marks their third time attending, this was the
first year LCM Stables brought horses. Their two horses, BMF
Mastermind and White Mud Blue Diamond performed in 13 and
Under English Pleasure, Western Pleasure and Western Equitation. By arriving early, the horses had time to recover from the
tiring journey. Even so, the two Morgans travelled well. Coming
early also helped them adjust to the show rings, as the Performance arena took some getting used to.
Friedrick could not be happier or more proud of her horses
and children as they all did so well. They will all be coming again
next year, with the same enthusiasm and excitement.
Cold Creek Inc. from Alberta brought three horses this year.
Sonja Lorenson had a wonderful trip down to Oklahoma, with
Gord Pack doing a great job hauling. The Morgans BMF Whisper
of Love (“Mint,”) owned by Nathalie Langstaedtler, Harlinton’s
Main Heir (“Heir”) owned by Linda Staples, and BMF Giada
(“Giada”) owned by Birch Meadow Morgans were happy and
fresh when they arrived well enough ahead of the show to be rested and ready to do their job. Mint had travelled to this show four
times already and Giada had been here twice, while it was a first
time to the Grand National for Heir. As Lorenson says, Giada “is
like a sports car” taking to the arenas like she was born there. She
had no trouble with the large classes, maneuvering through the
junior exhibitor classes to win Reserve World Champion Hunter
Pleasure 14-15. Giada, carrying Aidan Lorenson, was also third
in 15-year-old Hunt Seat Equitation. Her qualifiers landed on the
first Saturday and her World class was on the last Saturday, and
she took that in stride.
Giada’s stablemate Mint has shown at Oklahoma for the last
three years. Mint and his owner and rider Nathalie Langstaedtler
are truly a pair. They won third in their qualifying class, and received a fifth in the World Ladies Classic Saddle class. Mint is
described as a bright, game mare, and she proved it in the ring,
where she seems to have been bred to be.
It was a year of firsts for Heir. This was his first year showing
as well as first year at the Grand National. Lorenson says he is
very proud of himself and adjusted quickly to the activity of the

ings was so large it was split in two. Heir came out with a third for
that class. The Youth World Championship was also split in two,
and Heir and Aidan made the call back list. The pair rose to the
challenge to be awarded Reserve World Champion Youth in one
of the largest sections of the show.
Trafalger Farms, from Walla Walla, Washington, brought BMF
Palladium and One Night In Paris, to the Grand National for Canadian owners. Greg Ferguson and Daryl Hopson train and ride the
horses. They arrive a week early to allow the horses to relax and
prepare, and though stablemates, the horses are very different.
BMF Palladium is a Canadian-bred Morgan, now owned by
Mina Cox, and originally trained by Sonja Lorenson who stables
with Trafalgar at the show to allow them to work together. This
five-year-old gelding has shown for the past three years, and is a
very laid back traveller. He’ll eat and drink with no issues, and
knows to rest when he reaches the show. “He knows the routine,”
says Hopson. Palladium is comfortable in the large classes, having a horse on either side doesn’t bother him as is a common
situation in the classes of 20 or more. This Grand National show
saw Palladium win Reserve Champion Grand National Western

One Night In Paris, owned by Aline Young, is a lovely mare
who thinks she’s a true barn princess. She is more sensitive to climate change and change of water than Palladium, and takes more
time to settle. This is one reason why Trafalger arrives about a
week early, to make sure all horses are in the best condition to
show. The mare did well with rest and was back to show form. She
represented Canadian Morgans well in the Grand National English
Pleasure Mare and World Champion English Pleasure.
Stephanie Abel arrived with her team from Dawnville Morgans and increased the competitiveness of the junior divisions.
Catriona Kozijn rode Boxford Twist and Shout and added to her
ribbon collection with second in the Trail Junior Exhibitor Finals
and top ten ribbons in the open trail classes in both the qualifier
and World classes. She also took ribbons in Western Seat Equitation 14 & 15 and Showmanship. Joanne Dartana’s loan of Bred
to Boogie extended Catriona to the Classic Senior Equitation for
a top ten as well.
Bred to Boogie and Maya Beakhouse also had notable rides,
earning ribbons in the Walk-Trot Classic division.
Kaydee Crow was very successful bringing home ribbons on
Gulfwind Wild Again in Walk-Trot Western and Walk-Trot Hunter Pleasure. She also placed well in Fitting and Showmanship.
Bentlee Kublik brought her big smile to the 10 and under
classes, and claimed a third in Walk/Trot Western Pleasure 9 &
under, fourth in the 9 & under Equitation, and top tens in both
Grand National Walk/Trot Hunter Pleasure 8 & under and the
World Champion Walk/Trot 11 & under equitation.
Kaija Meetma also added to her show ring experience when
she returned to Alberta with a third in the Grand National Western Equitation 13 years, and top tens in Western Pleasure 13
years, 10-13 year Fitting and Showmanship, and World Western
Seat Junior Equitation.
Kris Johnsen had some great drives with Dragonfire Shaolin, claiming a third in the Classic Pleasure Driving Stallion and
Gelding class and a top ten in World Classic Pleasure Driving.
The Canadian Dressage contingent arrived in force and
brought with them hours of show experience. The resulting
world titles proved it!

Annalise Tremblay rode Be-St’s Mellow Tune in both Training and First Level, and added to the Bar-B Ranch winnings with
second in Training Level Test 3, fourth in Test 1 and fifth in Test
2 in the Junior Exhibitor classes. They finished Training Level
with fourth in the World Champion Award, and then claimed top
tens in First Level tests 1 and 3 with Barb Tracey riding.
Arlene MacKenzie joined the Alberta contingent with Morgan Hill Bold Image. This pair finished the show with Grand
National Champion in the Level 1 & 2 Free Style, a fourth in
First Level Test 2, and top ten in test 1 and 3 as well as the World
First Level Test Award.
Congratulations are in order for all the Canadians who went
to show, train, watch and support. It was a wonderful showing,
and we are all looking forward to next year. For many, now is the
time to rest, while keeping eyes on next year’s Morgan World
Championship and Grand National show.

Ranked third in the world, ParaOlympian Ashley Gowanlock is riding
a Morgan in Europe on her pursuit of
a World Equestrian Games medal.

A
shley Gowanlock is crystal clear on the
motivation that gets her on the back of a horse.
“First and foremost I love horses,” the 27-yearold Canadian Para-Olympian says, “and I
specifically love ‘Leilani’ because she is freedom. When
you look at pictures of us you would not know that I have
Cerebral Palsy. On the back of Leilani I escape all that.
Horses are first and foremost my passion because they
are my freedom. Winning is not my ultimate reason for
doing what I do.”
‘Leilani’ is the Morgan mare Collegiate
Sweet Leilani (The Bay Of St George x Ultra
De-Lite). She and Ashley are currently
competing in Europe representing
Equine Canada in a series of Para
Equestrian events leading up to the
World Equestrian Games (WEG) in
August of this year. Ashley is ranked
third in the world on her way to
WEG. (Competitors are obliged to
have a back-up horse as well. Ashley’s
is a Warmblood named FerDonia.
Equine Canada will have to make
a final decision as to which horse
Ashley rides at WEG.)

effervescent, an exemplar of
enthusiasm for all things
equine.

“I started riding when I was two years old, for therapeutic
reasons. I started in a therapy barn that was chock full of Morgans.
They are so smart, so badly want to be on your team. They are just
great therapy horses and I rode my share of Morgans before I came
across Leilani,” she recalls.
“I was born with Cerebral Palsy,” Ashley states. “It has a wide
range of symptoms. I would say I am middle of the road with
symptoms. It affects my entire body, but mostly my lower body. I
walk with a cane.”
To compensate for lack of control in her lower body, Ashley
rides with elastics holding her feet in the stirrups and attaching
her lower legs to the girth. The elastics are designed to break away
should the need arise. Riding is possible for her, she offers, because
of her “stubbornness, passion and also smart horses.”
Her respect for her horse is unequivocal: “Two people literally
throw me up on the horse. They put their hands under my feet like
they’re going to throw me over a fence. To be able to deal with a
human being shooting up in the air and plunking down on them is
a lot to ask an animal with a flight instinct.”
L
eilani and Ashley have been a team only since February.
She had a horse who, at the last minute, failed to pass the
vet check. Ashley was in panic mode to have a partner with
which to compete in Europe. “There weren’t the competitive horses
in [her home of]British Columbia.”
So with the help of close friend and teammate Lauren Barwick,
she found herself in Florida. There she met Leilani who belongs to
Lauren’s student Kendalayne Overway. “I can’t say I was specifically
looking for a Morgan. But, by the time I got to Florida, here was
this horse that looks like a sport horse, but clearly wants to be on
my team, was smart and not crazy—all of which counts.”
It was mutual understanding at first sight!
“Sometimes it’s hard for a horse,” Ashley observes, “the first
time you sit on it and you have no legs. Leilani was so quick to
learn and so responsive and picked up so quickly. She didn’t get
worried or offended... She was so attentive and trying hard to
figure out what my body was asking her to do.
“All the wiring in my body is discombobulated and shortcircuited. She was so smart. If my leg was spasming, she figured it
out. She just put her head down and did her job.”
And, speaking of the freedom that comes from being up on
a horse, Ashley notes, “She makes it safe to be bold. She makes it
safe to take risks. I had never before cantered, but on this horse I
canter.”
All that Ashley is doing is made possible, she is suggesting, by
a horse: “It’s my dream going in there, but, she has to shoulder that
dream as well as me.”
A
nd what is Ashley doing? She rides in dressage tests at levels
ranked by officials: “Mostly, for the last couple of years, I
have focused on para-dressage tests. We have to get classified
before we’re allowed to compete internationally. Each athlete has to
perform a number of movements before physiotherapists. They’ll
ask you to touch your toes, to walk straight, or touch your finger

to your nose as fast as you can go. They are testing coordination.
They place us into grades based on number of limbs affected and
severity. There is 1A and they only walk. I’m a 1B so I walk and trot.
This helps level the playing field.
“We do eight-meter circles, ten-meter circles, turns on the
haunches, free walk to medium walk, diagonals. It’s in a 20-meter
by 40-meter dressage ring.”
In place of leg aids, “My horse responds to the two whips and
to voice commands,” Ashley states. “I make a kissing noise if I want
the horse to go faster in the gait we’re in. If I want to go from walk
to trot it’s one cluck. If I want to go to canter it’s two clucks close
together. Leilani was super quick to figure that all out.”
Ashley is sponsored by Canadian officialdom, specifically
Equine Canada and Para-Equestrian Canada. As sponsors they
exercise a say in what horses go to Europe. So after the first meeting
with Leilani in February in Florida, it was off to some local shows
as a trial for the March expedition that leads to Germany, France
and England. “We brought Leilani to this international show in
Wellington, Florida to see if she would step up to the plate. She hit
the ball out of the park! I came out of the ring and [Ashley’s coach]
Lauren was bawling and I was like ‘Was it that bad?’ and she said,
‘No, it was amazing.’ It was the kick off of our European tour. It
set off the international season for us. Leilani and I won all the 1B
classes. She broke a score of 70 every day. She was competing with
these huge Warmblood horses and winning.”
So it was off across the Atlantic for the team in late March with
a combination of competition and training that included France,

Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and, finally, England where
they remain until the middle of August when it’s time to return to
Normandy for the WEG.
“In England we are staying at Hartpury Equine College.
They’ve hosted us numerous times. Right now we’re just training
there, riding, sharpening up on shapes, gauging what is best and
preparing how to be successful in Normandy. And we have another
international show that we are using as a practice run for WEG,”
says Ashley.
Ashley’s parents, an ocean and a continent away, track her
progress via the internet and her Facebook page. “My teammates
are my family when I’m gone and when I’m competing. It feels like
family,” Ashley concedes.
Her goal, she says, is “…to represent my country and the
Maple Leaf the best I possibly can. In order to do that I need to
be physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually balanced and
I need to continue to build that partnership that might put me
on a podium. If I can continue to win the heart of Leilani and
Fergy (her back-up mount) they will be with me and that’s worth
its weight in gold.”
The Morgan world will be paying attention to see if this
fantastic mare will accompany her enthusiastic rider into this
ultimate competition.
“She has stolen my heart,” says Ashley. n

in was on this terrible yet irresistible pony named Taffy. I was the
one who really broke her since I was the only one small enough
and “experienced” enough to tame this pony (I learned how to
hang on really well hehe).
The following year I was put on a big Morgan gelding named
Buddy. I ended up showing him in western walk/trot for a year.
In 2009 I took over Merlin (Lord of the Dance) from my sister. I knew as soon as I sat on him he was mine! I started taking
lessons on him, rode him to a Reserve World Championship in
2010, and he still is my horse now, what you’d call a lifer.
In 2013 I got Boxford Twist and Shout (Twister) and he is my
amazing western horse that I have now had for almost two years
and many victory passes with. This year I have started showing
saddle seat and look forward to continuing my development in it
as well. A big thank you to Joanne Dartana and Maya Beakhouse
for allowing me to share their gelding Bred to Boogie this past
show season.
The CMHA has been a part of my life since I was three and
I am so glad it has been. I can’t wait to make it a part of my
future. All the best to my fellow youth and all CMHA members
in 2015! The Morgan horse, made in America, loved throughout
the World…
