Weekly Football Notes vs. Nevada - Buffalo
2004 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO WEEKLY FOOTBALL RELEASE • THIS WEEK'S GAME • BUFFALO (0-2) AT NEVADA (1-1) SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2004 • 6:00 PM (PST) MACKAY STADIUM (31,900) • RENO, NV NON-CONFERENCE GAME WGR RADIO (550-AM) BULLS HEAD WAY OUT WEST TO FACE WOLF PACK The University at Buffalo football team will travel further than any other Bulls’ team in history in search of its first win of the 2004 season on Saturday. The Bulls will challenge the University of Nevada, of the Western Athletic Conference, in a non-conference clash at Mackay Stadium. Buffalo has never faced a WAC opponent in its 90 years of intercollegiate football. WHAT’S AT STAKE The Bulls are looking for their first win of the 2004 season and hoping to snap a 12-game road losing streak dating back to a 34-11 win at Rutgers in week two of the 2002 season. Nevada is hoping to climb over the .500 mark after a decisive 56-7 home win over Sacramento State. The Wolf Pack lost its conference opener by a 38-21 score to Louisiana Tech. fumbles back for scores in an 11-year span. In the past two weeks, Phil Jacques (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice), J.J. Gibson (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) and Ollice Ervin (Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach) have all turned the trick. Jacques took a fumble back 19 yards at Eastern Michigan, while Gibson had a 57-yard return for a score and Ervin pounced on a fumble in the end zone for yet another touchdown. The Bulls furthest trip West previously was last year at Iowa City, when they took on the Hawkeyes. • The Bulls are looking to snap a seven game winless streak on artificial surfaces. The last win on the fake stuff was a 26-19 win at Army in 2001. • The Bulls have returned three fumbles for touchdowns in the first two weeks of the 2004 season after returning just one for a score in their first 57 games after moving up to Division I-A in 1999. • Three Californians (tight end Brian Miller, defensive tackle Sagan Atuatasi and fullback Tyrone Wilson) will be playing as close to home as they will get in their Buffalo careers. • Inside The Game • FUMBLERAMA! UB ON A ROLL WITH LOOSE BALLS To illustrate the crazy bounces of the ball in football, consider this: In its first 57 games at the Division IA level (1999-2003), Buffalo returned exactly one fumble for a touchdown, and that occurred last season when Mark Graham took a fumble against Akron 66 yards for a score. This year, however, in just two games the Bulls have taken three fumbles for scores, including a pair last week against Syracuse, a feat that has never occurred in Buffalo’s modern Division I era (1993-present). In fact since Buffalo moved up to Division I-AA in 1993 and on to the Mid-American Conference and I-A play in 1999, the Bulls had only taken five Buffalo ____________________________ versus_____________________________ Nevada Buffalo, NY _______________________ Location _________________________ Reno, NV 26,168 __________________________ Enrollment ___________________________ 15,700 1846 __________________________ Year Founded ___________________________ 1874 Bulls ____________________________ Nickname _________________________ Wolf Pack Mid-American (East Division)_______ Conference _________ Western Athletic Conference UB Stadium/31,000 _____________ Stadium/Capacity___________ Mackay Stadium/31,900 1993/Natural Grass____________ Year Opened/Surface ________________ 1966/FieldTurf John B. The Buffalo defense has allowed only 307.0 yards per game in the first two weeks, ranking the unit second among MAC programs and 40th nationally. In addition, Buffalo is first in the league in both pass defense – and fourth nationally – at 87.5 yards per game and pass defense efficiency (89.36). The Buffalo defense has been paced by the play of senior safety J.J. Gibson who leads the team with 21 total tackles (12 solos), but has gotten contributions J.J. Gibson by many. Six other Bulls are in double figures in tackles through two weeks and the Bulls have registered seven turnovers (six fumble recoveries and an interception) and five sacks. Special teams mistakes erased what was otherwise a tremendous effort by the University at Buffalo football team in a 37-17 loss to Syracuse in front of an all-time Bulls' football record crowd of 29,013 at a sold out UB Stadium. The Bulls led the heavily-favored Orange 10-3 when Anthony Smith blocked a pair of punts 1:39 apart that turned into immediate touchdowns and the Bulls never recovered. Syracuse also got a field goal on their first possession after a 57-yard kickoff return by Diamond Ferri. Those 17 points made the difference in a game where Syracuse (1-1) only outgained the Bulls by 34 yards and spoiled an outstanding defensive effort by UB (02). “That second quarter was a tough one for us," said UB coach Jim Hofher, "After the first punt block we did not get back out there and establish the kind of field position we needed to. We continue to have an uphill battle to get better, but we are closer than a lot of people think.” Buffalo limited Syracuse to just a field goal on its opening possession after a crucial third down sack by Bill PAGE 2 Meholif (Parma, OH/St. Ignatius). The Bulls had another opportunity to score on Syracuse's next drive as true freshman James Bill Meholif Evans (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) stepped in front of a Joe Fields pass and returned it 41 yards to the SU 25. However, an offsides penalty wiped out a field goal and junior kicker Mike Baker (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) missed a 38-yard field goal that would have tied it. The Bulls, however, would tie it early in the second quarter on a 36-yard field goal by Baker, the longest of his career. The key plays on the drive were a third down completion from quarterback P.J. Piskorik (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) to senior tight end Brian Miller (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) and a 19-yard run by sophomore Steven King (Hempstead, NY/Uniondale). Buffalo then electrified the sellout crowd with the go-ahead touchdown. On a third-and-one play at the Buffalo 42, senior Sagan Atuatasi (Anaheim, CA/Los Alamitos) hammered Greg • MAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (SEPTEMBER 6) • • EAST DIVISION PLAYERS OF THE WEEK • Offense: Offense - Josh Betts, Miami, quarterback (Jr., Vandalia, Ohio) – Betts completed 26-of-43 pass attempts for 416 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-26 loss at Cincinnati. Bates also led the team in rushing with 32 yards on seven carries to boost his total offense to 448 yards. Defense: Jonathan Goddard, Marshall, defensive end (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) – Goddard had nine tackles, including five solo, as well as a fumble return for a touchdown in a 24-21 loss at No. 9 Ohio State. Goddard also recorded two tackles for a loss and was credited with three quarterback hurries. Marshall limited the Buckeyes to just 79 rushing yards. Special Teams: Brett Briggs, Akron, kickoff returns (Jr., Barstow, Fla.) – Among his 201 yards of all-purpose yards was 78 yards on three kickoff returns vs. Middle Tennessee State, an average of 26.0 yards per return. Briggs’ final return covered 31 yards and gave the Zips solid field position. He added 80 yards rushing on 11 carries and had 43 yards receiving. • WEST DIVISION PLAYERS OF THE WEEK • Offense: Jerry Seymour, Central Michigan, running back (So., Miramar, Fla.) – Provided half of the Chippewas total offense and all of its scoring with 164 rushing yards and a touchdown at Michigan State. His 90 yard touchdown run in the third quarter tied a Spartan Stadium record and is the longest run by an opponent vs. MSU. It also marked Seymour’s seventh straight 100-yard game. Defense: Ray Smith, Northern Illinois, strong safety (Jr., Crown Point, Ind.) – In a 23-22 win over Southern Illinois, Smith was credited with a team-high 14 tackles (11 solo) and one deflection. Helped limit the Salukis’ Brandon Jacobs to 41 rushing yards on 13 attempts. Special Teams: Charles Sharon, Bowling Green, punt returns (Jr., Palatka, Fla.) – Sharon returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown, the fourth longest in school history, vs. Southeast Missouri. He also caught three passes for 22 yards and a touchdown. UB WEEKLY FOOTBALL RELEASE • Hanoian to force a fumble and senior safety J.J. Gibson returned it 57 yards for a touchdown to give the Bulls a 103 lead. Gibson paced a stellar defensive effort by the Bulls with 10 tackles. However, Smith's back-to-back blocks totally changed the complexion of the game and the Bulls' never recovered as SU would score 34 unanswered points before the Bulls would close the scoring with yet another defensive touchdown. Redshirt freshman Ollice Ervin (Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach) fell on a fumble by Xzavier Gaines in the Ollice Ervin Syracuse end zone with 4:21 remaining. “I couldn't be prouder of the defense,” said Hofher of a unit that gave up just 275 yards in the game. “They've scored three times now in two weeks.” The Bulls had several other stars on defense on this night. Junior Gemara Williams (Oak Park, MI/ Brother Rice) had nine tackles and a pass breakup, while sophomore Ramon Guzman (Bronx, NY/ Gemara Williams DeWitt-Clinton) had five tackles, two for losses, a sack and a blocked punt. Linebackers Bryan Cummings (Cincinnati, OH/ Madeira) and Jeff Bublavi (Norwood, PA/Interboro) added seven tackles (one each for a loss) for the Bulls. The Bulls offense - which ran for 225 yards in the opener at Eastern Michigan - was limited to 109 yards rushing and 122 yards passing. Piskorik finished 9-of-14 for 80 yards, while senior flanker Matt Knueven (Cincin- nati, OH/LaSalle) had three receptions for 28 yards. "(Buffalo) plays very, very hard and they have quick backs," said SU coach Paul Pasqualoni. "I would say Coach Hofher has this going in exactly the right direction. If they just stay on track with what they are doing, I think they are going to be terrific." BULLS-WOLF PACK CONNECTIONS Despite the distance between the schools, there are some connections between Nevada and Buffalo. √ Nevada junior wideout Trevor Brackett played his JUCO ball at College of the Canyons, where UB PAGE 3 senior tight end Brian Miller played one season with him. Bulls’ wide receivers coach Doug Socha also coached at College of the Canyons. Tyrone Wilson √ Nevada’s leading wide receiver, Nichiren Flowers, played his high school ball with UB senior fullback Tyrone Wilson (Tulare, CA/Tulare). A true freshman, Evans has not looked a bit out of place in two games, recording James Evans four tackles and snaring his first career interception versus Syracuse and returning it 41 yards. Evans was forced into the starting lineup when junior Aaron Leeper (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) injured his shoulder late in training camp. FIRST-TIME STARTERS Earning their first starts against Syracuse were senior tackle Terrance Miles (Buffalo, NY/ McKinley) and redshirt frosh wideout Terrance Breaux (Randallstown, MD/ Terrance Miles Randallstown). Miles joined junior defensive end Aaron Sanders (Clarence, NY/St. Joseph’s) as former local recruited walk-ons who earned starts in Buffalo’s biggest home game in history versus Syracuse. FAB FRESHMEN Several true freshman are making an impact for the Bulls in the early season, more than in any of Jim Hofher’s previous three seasons. Cornerback James Evans and punter Ben Woods (Hermitage, PA/ Hickory) have started in their first two collegiate games, while Ben Woods PAGE 4 flanker Bryan Kisabeth (Plymouth, MI/Divine Child), fullback Brad Robison (Groton, NY/Groton) and cornerback/safety Jesse Imes (Cincinnati, OH/Kings Mills) have all seen action. Evans had his first career interception last week, Woods has averaged over 40 yards per punt and both Kisabeth and Robison made their first career catches, while Imes had a pair of tackles versus Syracuse. Last season, just two Bulls (Marck Abraham and DeSean Larmond) saw action as true freshmen. BULLS TO NAME GAME CAPTAINS IN 2004 In a departure from previous years, head coach Jim Hofher has elected to select game captains for the ’04 season instead of permanent captains. The previous three seasons, Hofher had let the players select their captains after spring practice. Each week this year, the coaching staff will select one senior, one junior, one special teams player and one “wild card” as captains. Brian Miller The Nevada game captains are senior tight end Brian Miller, senior fullback Tyrone Wilson, junior safety Gemara Williams and kicker Mike Baker. BLOCK PARTY Entering his junior season, defensive tackle Rob Schroeder ranked third in the nation in total number of blocked kicks among current players in a poll of Division I-A Sports Information Directors. Schroeder blocked his first career punt vs. Northern Illinois late last year, giving him the season “hat trick” with a punt, field goal and PAT block. He also blocked a PAT versus Ohio, while his UB WEEKLY FOOTBALL RELEASE • other blocked extra point and the blocked field goal came earlier in the season at Central Florida. For his career, Schroeder has Rob Schroeder blocked six kicks (three PATs, two field goals and a punt). Those six career blocks currently rank third among all active players behind Central Michigan’s James King (10) and Florida State’s B.J. Ward (7). The all-time NCAA record is 19 by James Ferebee of New Mexico State (5 punts, 6 PATs, 8 FGs). Active career leaders in blocked kicks. 1. 2. 3. 5. 6. James King, Central Michigan______________ 10 B.J. The talented UB tailbacks are comprised of junior Dave Dawson (Camp Hill, PA/ Bishop McDevitt) and sophomores Chris McDuffie Dave Dawson (Amherst, NY/ Williamsville North), Jared Patterson (Belividere, NJ/Belvidere) and Steven King (Hempstead, NY/ Uniondale). Last season that group helped Buffalo rank sixth in the MAC and 43rd nationally with 168.8 rushing yards per game. In week one at EMU, they continued to impress, racking up 225 yards in rushing yards with Dawson leading the way with 102 yards on just 10 carries. McDuffie had a career-high 71 yards, while King scored two touchdowns and Patterson one. In 2003, Dawson led the way with 678 yards (5.3 per carry) and had four runs over 50 yards on the season. Hofher is into his 26th year of collegiate coaching – all at the Division I level – this year and has an all-time head coaching record of 49-68 after spending eight seasons as head coach at Cornell (1990-97) and is now in his fourth at Buffalo. Hofher has also been on staffs at Wake Forest, Tennessee, Syracuse, North Carolina and Mid-American Conference rival Miami (OH). As an assistant coach, he was part of two staffs that saw their head coaches earn National Coach of the Year honors, with John Mackovic at Wake Forest and at Syracuse with Dick MacPherson. As a head coach, he led the Big Red of Cornell to more Ivy League victories than any other coach in school history and captured a pair of Ivy League titles. Hofher is a native of Middletown, CT, and was recruited and played quarterback for NFL coaching legend George PAGE 6 BULLS IN THE RECORD BOOKS CAREER R ECEPTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. SANDERS EARNS MAC PLAYER OF WEEK HONORS VS. EMU Junior defensive end Aaron Sanders (Clarence, NY/St. Joseph’s) is one of the great stories in the UB program, and he earned his biggest honor yet after a career game against Eastern Michigan. Sanders earned MAC East Division co-Player of the Week honors after recording a career-best seven tackles (four solos), two sacks, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble that teammate Phil Jacques scooped up and rumbled 19 yards for a touchdown with. Sanders came to UB as an invited Aaron Sanders walk-on and has since earned a scholarship and a starting slot on a veteran Bulls’ defensive line. He was an All-Western New York selection for coach Bob O’Connor at long-time powerhouse St. Joe’s. Andy Rondeau (assistant defensive coordinator/safeties), Scott Pethtel (special teams coordinator/inside linebackers), Allen Mogridge (running backs), Ryan Groneman (assistant, Sports Performance) and a pair of graduate assistants – Obadiah Harris and Josh Harrica – joined Buffalo’s football staff. In addition, head coach Jim Hofher announced that Tom Jones, who will continue to coach the defensive line, was promoted to defensive coordinator, that Antonio Goss will move from linebackers to cornerbacks, that offensive line coach Roy Istvan will assume offensive co-coordinator duties, and that Doug Socha (wide receivers) will handle recruiting coordinator duties. LOOKING FOR PAYDIRT ON KICKOFF RETURN The Bulls have gone 158 straight games without returning a kickoff for a score. You have to go back to Oct. 14, 1989 when UB Hall of Famer Alan Bell returned a kickoff 89 yards against Ithaca for the last time a Buffalo player took a kickoff back for six. BULLS SMASH ATTENDANCE MARK VERSUS SYRACUSE The Bulls played in front of the first sellout crowd in UB Stadium (1993) history and the largest crowd to ever watch a UB football game in Buffalo when Syracuse visited Sept. 11th. The game drew 29,013 fans, smashing the all-time home UB record of 26,126. The Bulls have now seen seven of the top 10 home crowds in its 90-year football history assemble in UB Stadium.
