P4 OFC.indd 1 CH 203 CH 167 NEW CH 234 CH 518 Meet the best talk show hosts P3 31/3/15 9:11 AM ENTERTAINMENT Use your brain Five lesser-known facts about what goes on inside your noggin The best of Hollywood Here are the nominees for the 2015 MTV Movie Awards Every Wed, 10pm National Geographic CH 201 Apr 13, 7.30am MTV Asia CH 350 I t’s all about the brain this month on Singtel TV. Stay tuned for the Entertain Your Brain stunt, with Brain Games S4 and Science of Stupid S2 presenting all that matters about your grey matter. Before these shows hit your screens, here’s a teaser of the facts that will stun you. Men’s brains are larger than women’s About 10 percent larger, according to Scientific American. But while men’s brains are bigger overall, women have a larger ventral prefrontal cortex, the region associated with social cognition and interpersonal judgment. Movie of the Year American Sniper The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 Guardians of the Galaxy Gone Girl The Fault in Our Stars Boyhood Whiplash Selma Left-brain and right-brain? All a myth Stop taking those ‘Are you left- or right-brained’ online quizzes – they’re baloney. In the minds of the internet hoi-polloi, left-brain equals logical and right-brain equals creative. Scientists have proven that while both halves work somewhat differently, they work in tandem rather than in competition. Best Female Performance Getting rejected is physically painful Well, almost. According to a study by the University of Michigan Medical School, the brain treats rejection similarly to physical injury. Ah, love. Now we know thy sting. Best Male Performance But the brain feels no pain Because there are no pain receptors in it – that’s why surgeons can operate on the brain of a fully conscious patient. Couple that with the previous fact and you’ll realise your cerebrum’s just out to get you. LOL, what? Laughter is something scientists have yet to figure out. Nobody knows why we chuckle, chortle or cackle – all we do know is that only humans do it. (And hyenas don’t count.) From 11.30am Cartoon Network (HD) CH 226 Apr 4, 5, 11 & 12 Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games Emma Stone, Birdman Shailene Woodley, The Fault in Our Stars Reese Witherspoon, Wild Scarlett Johansson, Lucy Bradley Cooper, American Sniper Chris Pratt, Guardians of the Galaxy Ansel Elgort, The Fault in Our Stars Miles Teller, Whiplash Channing Tatum, Foxcatcher Best Fashion Okay, so this isn’t an actual category, but there will be a sartorial accompiment to the ceremony. Tune in to Fashion Police: MTV Movie Awards on E! Entertainment HD (CH 328) on April 14, 9pm to see which stars strike fashion gold. Not just child’s play Free the kid inside you with these two cartoons Finn & Gumball’s Amazing Adventures Dive right into the madcap world of Finn and Gumball with this stunt, which comprises back-to-back episodes of Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball. With the wacky duo and their bizarre odysseys, you know it’s gonna be a fun ride. OddBods Imagine a cross between the Teletubbies and the Minions from Despicable Me, and you’ll get the OddBods. As the stars of their eponymous cartoon, these lovable critters embark on everyday – no, that’s not a typo – tasks and get everything wrong. At least they have fun while doing so. Premieres Every Fri, 6pm Apr 10 Disney Channel (HD) CH 234 ENGLISH Talk this way A Meet the hosts of four talk shows you need to watch for your daily dose of Tinseltown fter replacing Jay ‘Big Jaw’ Leno as the host of The Tonight Show in 2014, Jimmy Fallon quickly established himself as the funniest man on television – and he doesn’t even need to rely on cheap gags or dirty jokes. The comedian cut his teeth on the stand-up circuit after college (from which he graduated in communications) before his big break came in the form of an audition at Saturday Night Live, a show Fallon obsessed about in his youth. He was promoted to a season regular in 1999, and left five years later to pursue a film career. But the call of TV was too strong. In 2009, Fallon jumped at the chance to replace Conan O’Brien on Late Night after the latter was pegged to succeed Leno (and we all know how that went). Five years at the helm later, and the late show musical chairs spun once again – this time, to Fallon’s advantage. He would be the host of The Tonight Show, taking over the seat once occupied by Johnny Carson and Jack Paar. Fallon’s take on the show is a decidedly modern one. He roped in hip hop act The Roots as his backing band, worked with pop stars such as Justin Timberlake, and has hilarious segments dedicated to Twitter hashtags. To sum up, Fallon’s just way too cool. Daily, 11.45pm RTL CBS Entertainment HD CH 318 David Letterman (Late Night with David Letterman) With 33 years behind the host’s desk at Late Night with David Letterman, this veteran has seen it all – and that includes receiving a death threat during his long stint. It’s widely held that Letterman is one of the best in his class, so it does come as a surprise that the comedian actually started out… reading the weather. Yep, he made his TV debut as a weatherman – albeit a rather hilarious one – on a station in his native state of Indianapolis. Every Sat, 9pm CNBC Asia CH 173 Daily, 8pm RTL CBS Entertainment HD CH 318 Thea Andrews & Louis Aguirre (The Insider) Andrews is the hostess with the mostess. She’s covered everything from sports to reality TV to cooking competitions (foodies will recognise her as the host of Top Chef Canada). This time, though, she’s presenting The Insider, an entertainment news programme, with Aguirre. He, on the other hand, began his career as a pound-the-pavement reporter, even getting an Emmy nod for his coverage of the AIDS crisis in the US. Every Mon-Fri, 11.30pm Comedy Central Asia (HD) CH 324 Jon Stewart (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Jon Stewart will be retiring from The Daily Show by the end of 2015 – so consider this your last chance to catch the funnyman at his best. Stewart, who has been hosting The Daily Show since 1999, is like the left’s answer to Bill O’Reilly: he constantly pokes fun at the GOP, FOX News and other conservative touchpoints such as gun control and white privilege. SHOWTIME 3 3-10.indd 3 31/3/15 10:03 AM Movies Not safe for work Flight of fancy Thank your lucky stars your superiors in the office aren’t like the ones in Horrible Bosses 2 Why Birdman is one of the best movies to emerge from Hollywood in recent years Video On Demand (Latest) Video On Demand (Latest) Premieres Apr 15 It’s a one-take wonder Through the magic of cinema, director Alejandro González Iñárritu conjures up a film that appears to have been shot in one take. That’s right. The edits are seamless, and the cinematography so swooping and fluid that the film looks and feel like a modern version of the French New Wave. It’s got a score to die for Rather than an epic score or a soundtrack of miscellany, the music on Birdman borrows from the loose-limbed fury of bebop and free jazz. It’s all drums here, which makes lead character Riggan Thomson’s plight even more urgent and vital. Jennifer Aniston as Dr Julia Harris Dentists are scary already, but Aniston’s character takes it one notch higher. Dr Harris is sex-crazed, obsessive and should be charged for multiple sexual harrassment incidents. Although she isn’t as prominent here, you’ll still get to see her doing what she does best. And no, we’re not talking about fixing teeth. Kevin Spacey as David Harken After the events of the first movie, Spacey’s despicable character lands up in jail. But once the three main characters – Nick Hendricks, Kurt Buckman and Dale Arbus (pictured above) – find themselves in a financial muddle, they pay ol’ Harken a visit for some advice. And his brilliant idea? Kidnap someone for ransom. Christoph Waltz as Burt Hanson Okay, so he’s not technically the boss but an investor who engages the lead trio to get their new venture off the ground. And he’s just as unscrupulous as Harken and Dr Harris. After pledging to pump in capital, Hanson backs out at the 11th hour and uses the momentum to commandeer the trio’s business. Premieres Apr 13 Video On Demand (Latest) It’s got Michael Keaton like you’ve never seen him He plays Thomson with the clandestine charm of a Bill Murray – sans the latter’s inimitable swagger. He could’ve taken the role too seriously and ham it up, but he thankfully doesn’t. Instead, he offers a nuanced portrayal of a washed-up former superhero action star: we want to root for him, but he makes it hard for us. SHOWTIME 5 3-10.indd 5 31/3/15 10:03 AM SPORTS Putt a swing on it Rory McIlroy (pictured below) is pegged as a hot young talent with serious claims to The Masters Tournament this month. We take a closer look at his short – but supremely successful – career What a racquet! Meet the top-three seeds of the El Gouna International squash tournament Finals on Apr 16, 12.30am mio Sports CH 112 Apr 9-13, 3am FOX Sports 2 CH 115 L et’s put it this way: if endorsement deals were a measure of athletic success, then Rory McIlroy would be the best golfer on the planet by a mile. He’s ranked the third-most marketable athlete in the world, behind only Lionel Messi and Neymar, after signing a long-term contract with Nike worth a whopping US$100 million. But thankfully for McIlroy, he’s got the chops to back up the bucks. In 2014, the 25-year-old from Northern Ireland bagged two major cups – the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and the World Golf Championship – to catapult him to world number one (we told you he’s got the skills). He was also voted PGA Player of the Year, PGA Tour Player of the Year and several other awards. Did we mention he’s only 25? As a player, McIlroy favours an aggressive – yet simple – drive technique, followed by his carefully weighted ‘three-swing system’: the first is a standard swing, the second a shorter backswing, and the third an even shorter grippeddown swing. This allows him to manage a wide range of distances in his approach to the green. Sweat it out… …or keep your eyes glued to these two high-intensity games Mohamed El Shorbagy The 24-year-old Egyptian’s nickname is the Beast – and it’s easy to see why. He’s currently the world’s top squash player and has won 12 titles in his career so far, including two World Series trophies in 2014. At this competition, he’ll want to one-up his countryman Ramy Ashour, who took home last year’s trophy. Grégory Gaultier The current world number two heads to El Gouna having just lost to El Shorbagy in the 2014 Hong Kong Open. But the 32-year-old Frenchman will be buoyed by his victory against fellow top seed Nick Matthew in last year’s British Open – he’ll hope to break his duck against Egyptian opponents this time ’round. Daily, 11.30pm Fight Sports CH 119 Apr 16, 12.30am mio Sports CH 111 Fight Sports Grand Sumo Catch topless behemoths slam into one another – yes, we’re talking about sumo wrestling. The traditional Japanese martial arts gets a modern presentation in this competition, which hopes to attract even the layperson. But the sport’s fairly simple if you ask us: if a wrestler is forced off the ring, he loses. Warriors FC vs Brunei DPMM It’s still early days for the S.League season, and Brunei DPMM has the trophy squarely in mind. They’re up in second place at this time of writing, with a game in hand against the league leaders. A win against Warriors FC, which are in the mid-table, will lay further claim to their title dreams. Nick Matthew At 34, the Englishman is the oldest of the top seeds. But don’t let his age fool you. The Wolf, as Matthew is better known to his fans, is the world number three, and beat El Shorbagy a few months ago to claim the Windy City Open cup. Let’s see if he can emulate that form in this tournament. 6 SHOWTIME 3-10.indd 6 31/3/15 10:03 AM KOREAN Reign of kings We take a look at the controversial rule of Prince Gwanghae, the star of sageuk drama Hwajeong Every Tue & Wed, 8.55pm OH! K CH 525 & 611 The reasons we love Angry Mom Jo Gang-Ja defends her daughter A-Ran from bullies – by infiltrating the class as a high schooler Premieres Apr 2 Premieres Apr 14 Prince Gwanghae, played by Cha Seung Won The lowly son of a concubine, Gwanghae is controversial for the cold-blooded murder of his half-brother in his campaign to win the throne. Yet the 15th king of the Joseon dynasty is also a shrewd politician whose diplomacy was crucial in avoiding several wars. Princess Jungmyung, played by Lee Yeon Hee Sister to Crown Prince Yeongchang, Jungmyung was thrown out and demoted to a common slave after his assassination. And her troubles do not end there. King Injo, who usurps the throne from Gwanghae, also views her as a threat. King Injo, played by Kim Jae Won In spite of his victorious coup over his uncle Gwanghae, Injo holds little power – he is merely the puppet king of the Western faction that installed him. Paranoid for his position, Injo is determined to eliminate all risks, including Jungmyung. All programmes are available in Korean audio.
