Welcome to Peachtree Road United Methodist Church
On behalf of the members and staff of Peachtree Road
United Methodist Church, we are pleased to welcome
you to Atlanta and the 2016 Festival of Homiletics. We
are delighted to be the host church for this unique event
as we consider Prophetic Preaching in Times of Change.

If you are here in Atlanta for the first time, we want you to
know that much of what makes our city an exciting place
to visit is within a short distance of the church. We are
located in the heart of Buckhead, a center for shopping
and dining in Atlanta. We believe you will enjoy the variety of restaurants as well as the warm friendliness of our
people. Our staff stands ready to recommend a favorite
restaurant or shop to you.
Peachtree Road is a 7,700-member church with a vital
ministry in the Buckhead community. Our mission is “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world,” and we live this mission out through our ministries
of worship, nurture, outreach and witness. Our staff is
available to you to talk about any of those aspects of our
ministry that may interest you.
In addition, we have a group of volunteers who are delighted to give you a tour of our beautiful facilities. The
1,500-seat sanctuary, which was completed 15 years ago,
is the center for the worship life of our congregation. Our

The Buckhead Theatre
Since its beginning, the congregation of Peachtree Road
United Methodist Church has been active in the Atlanta
community, meeting the needs of people both inside and
outside the church walls.
Originally opened in 1931, The Buckhead Theatre sits at
the gateway to one of the country’s most storied neighborhoods. Two years of painstaking restoration led the
way for a grand reopening in 2010. The Buckhead Theatre
reopened its doors as Atlanta’s premier intimate theatrical
venue. Embracing the deep musical heritage of Georgia
and the Southeast, The Buckhead Theatre has been the
site of sold-out shows of every musical genre—rock, country, hip-hop, alternative and more.
Peachtree Road was organized on April 28, 1925, in the
home of Dr. and Mrs. M.T. Salter. We were founded as
The Peachtree Road Methodist Church and The Rev. E.H.
Wood was named our first pastor. At that first meeting, 19
people entered their membership in Peachtree Road. Our
present membership stands at more than 7,100.
Worship is at the heart of who we are at Peachtree Road.
Our worship services and music are traditional with a
warm, welcoming feel. The congregation is committed to
outreach into the Atlanta community, both on an individual basis and in groups of volunteers. The largest project each year is The Great Day of Service, during which
almost 2,000 volunteers from Peachtree Road blanket the
Atlanta area on one Saturday in Lent. Volunteers serve at
more than 85 different outreach agencies, helping with
everything from painting to conducting birthday parties
for the elderly.
Peachtree Road’s congregation is multi-generational.
There are opportunities for all ages and life stages to
become involved through study, outreach and fellowship. The congregation of Peachtree Road is dedicated to
opening their doors to everyone, to making visitors feel
welcome and to extending the hospitality and friendship
to both congregation and community.
Central to Buckhead nightlife for more than 80 years, The
Buckhead Theatre is steeped in the lively spirit of its history, yet fully modernized to accommodate today’s various
forms of entertainment and special events. The restored
Spanish-baroque architecture of this classic movie house
jewel is a seamless historical counterpoint to the updated
state-of-the-art lighting and sound system, modern catering kitchen, event space and other amenities.
Beyond the theater’s 10-foot LED marquee, original art
deco doorways lead from the lobby into the 8,000-squarefoot main theatre and orchestra and loge spaces. The
Buckhead Theatre’s revitalized interior plan increases flexibility for a variety of performances and events, including
lectures, comedy, Broadway plays, concerts and private
and public events.

Jennifer Ackerman leads a ministry designed to help catalyze a movement of
empowered, wise preachers who live
and lead at the convergence of worship, preaching and justice. Her commitment to multi-cultural, trans-denominational partnerships is evident in her
preaching and worship leading, which seek to bring crosscontextual expressions of the gospel to worship settings
of all kinds. Ackerman was also delighted to contribute
the “Practice” sections of Mark Labberton’s recent book,
“Called: The Crisis and Promise of Following Jesus Today.”
Ackerman is ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA),
received her M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary and
is currently working on a Ph.D. in theology and culture.
Joanna Adams
Retired pastor, Presbyterian Church
(USA); Co-Founder, Higher Ground
A graduate of Columbia Theological
Seminary, Joanna Adams holds an
honorary Doctor of Divinity from Davidson College. She is the recipient of
numerous honors and awards, including 2006 Georgia Woman of the Year, and is the author of
more than 40 published articles, sermons and chapters.
She preached at the National Cathedral, the Memorial
Church of Harvard University and the Chautauqua Institution. Adams helped start more than a dozen nonprofit
organizations. Recently, she chaired the board of Intown
Collaborative Ministries. From 2013-2014, she served as
interim senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. Prior to that, she was senior pastor of Morningside
Presbyterian Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church and
North Decatur Presbyterian Church, all in the Atlanta area.
Over the years, Adams chaired the boards of five institutions, including that of Columbia Theological Seminary,
the YWCA of Metro Atlanta and Our House. She served
on the boards of more than 20 organizations, including
Grady Hospital Foundation and Day 1.
Charlotte Blake Alston performed in
venues throughout North America
and abroad, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts;
the Smithsonian Institution; festivals in
South Africa, Ghana, Ireland and Japan; prisons; detention
centers and a refugee camp in northern Senegal. In 1991,
Alston became the first storyteller to perform with the
Philadelphia Orchestra. For six seasons, she hosted “Carnegie Kids,” Carnegie Hall’s preschool concert series. She
was featured on the Carnegie Hall Family Concert Series,
the National Storytelling Festival and the National Festival
of Black Storytelling. She was a featured artist at both
the presidential inaugural festivities in Washington, D.C.,
and the Pennsylvania gubernatorial children’s inaugural
celebrations in Harrisburg, Penn. Alston was a featured
narrator for several orchestras and can be heard on documentaries including “Plenty of Good Women Dancers,”
“The Peddie School” and “Crosstown.” She is the recipient
of numerous honors and awards, including two honorary
Ph.D.s, the Zora Neale Hurston Award and the Circle of Excellence Award from the National Storytelling Association.
Anthony Bailey

Professor Emeritus of Old Testament,
Columbia Theological Seminary
Originally from Barbados, Anthony Bailey has lived and served in various parts
of Canada, Kenya and Jamaica. A teacher at heart, Bailey taught at the McGill
University joint theological colleges in
Montreal and the Theological College of the University of
the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. He is an occasional
lecturer at the Ottawa School of Theology and Spirituality
and has been a guest lecturer at Queen’s University School
of Religion. Bailey is a sought after preacher, speaker and
worship/workshop leader at North American and Caribbean conferences. His academic degrees are in the areas
of social work, theology, philosophy of religion (liturgical
language) and ethics and culture. Bailey has been awarded
the Dreamkeepers’ Martin Luther King Jr. Life Achievement Award for Racial Reconciliation. He wrote the biblical
and theological study resource for “Sankofa: The Histories
and Heritages of Black Peoples in the United Church of
Canada.” He is an intercultural competence trainer and
comments on social and racial issues on local radio and
television stations in his home city of Ottawa.
Walter Brueggemann has served as
president of the Society of Biblical Literature and has lectured at universities and seminaries around the world.
In 1994 he received both the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Union
Theological Seminary and the Luce Theological Fellowship from the Association of Theological Schools. He has
written more than 50 books, including several books on
Old Testament theology. He received book of the year
awards from both the Academy of Parish Clergy and the
Catholic Press Association for “Theology of the Old Testament.” The Association of Theological Booksellers named
Brueggemann’s “An Introduction to the Old Testament:
The Canon and Christian Imagination,” the Best Academic
Book in 2004. His most recent books include “Prayers for
a Privileged People,” “The Word Militant: Preaching a Decentering Word,” “Mandate to Difference: An Invitation
to the Contemporary Church” and “The Theology of the
Book of Jeremiah.”

Anna Carter Florence is an ordained
minister in the Presbyterian Church
(USA) and holds degrees from Yale
College and Princeton Theological
Seminary (M.Div. and Ph.D.). Before
joining the Columbia faculty in 1998, Carter Florence
served as an associate pastor for youth and young adults
at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. Her
books include “Preaching as Testimony” and “Inscribing the Word,” as well as two forthcoming books: “‘A’ is
for Alabaster: A Preacher’s Alphabet” and “Come Back
When You’ve Found Something True: New Ways to Read
Scripture,” based on her 2012 Lyman Beecher Lectures on
Preaching at Yale Divinity School. She is a frequent teacher
and lecturer in this country and abroad.
Cláudio Carvalhaes, a theologian and
artist, was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, where he earned his degree
from the Independent Presbyterian
Theological Seminary. He earned his M.A. from Methodist University’s Ecumenical Institute in São Paulo and a
Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary. He served two
Presbyterian congregations in São Paulo and helped found
Christ is Life Presbyterian Church, a Portuguese-speaking
immigrant congregation in Fall River, Mass. He received
many awards and serves on several boards, including the
Society for the Arts, Religion and Contemporary Culture.
He published articles in English, Spanish and Portuguese;
and is the author of three books in Portuguese and one
in English: “Eucharist and Globalization: Redrawing the
Borders of Eucharistic Hospitality.” He preached and performed in Brazil, Mozambique, El Salvador and several
places in America. He taught at Louisville Presbyterian
Theological Seminary and Lutheran Theological Seminary
at Philadelphia.

Edgardo Colón-Emeric is originally from
Puerto Rico. His research engages the
thought of figures like Thomas Aquinas, John Wesley and Bartolomé de
las Casas with the intent of achieving mestizajes of classical theology, Methodist experience and Latino history.
Colón-Emeric is an ordained elder in the North Carolina
Conference. He was founding pastor of Cristo Vive UMC
and continues to serve in Hispanic ministries in Methodist
churches in North Carolina.
In 1991, Yvette Flunder founded the
City of Refuge UCC, a thriving innercity congregation in San Francisco that
celebrates the radically inclusive love of
Jesus Christ. Flunder is a third-generation preacher with roots in the Church of God in Christ.
She served as associate pastor and administrator for the
Oakland-based Love Center Church, where she performs
and records with Walter Hawkins and the Family and the
Love Center Choir. She is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ. She holds a Master of Arts from the
Pacific School of Religion and a Doctor of Ministry from
San Francisco Theological Seminary. In 2003, Flunder was
consecrated presiding bishop of the Fellowship, a multidenominational group of 110 primarily African-American
Christian leaders. Responding to the needs of the AIDS
epidemic, Flunder opened Hazard-Ashley House, Walker
House and Restoration House, all in California. She is the
author of “Where the Edge Gathers: A Theology and Homiletic of Radical Inclusion” (Pilgrim Press).

Teresa Fry Brown’s research interests
include homiletics, womanism, womanist ethics, socio-cultural transformation
and African diaspora history focusing
on African-American spiritual values. In addition to four
complete books, she wrote articles and chapters for more
than a dozen others, including “Those Preaching Women,
Vol. 3;” “The Abingdon Women’s Preaching Annual;” and
most recently, “Delivering the Sermon: Voice, Body and
Animation in Proclamation.” A former speech pathologist,
Fry Brown is ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal
church. In 2010, she became the first African-American
woman to attain the rank of full professor at Candler.
Nora Gallagher is an American writer
of memoir, fiction and essays, including the books, “Moonlight Sonata at
the Mayo Clinic” and “Changing Light.”
Educated at St. John’s College, Gallagher learned writing on the ground in
San Francisco as a stringer for Time magazine. Since then,
her essays, book reviews and journalism appeared in many
publications including The New York Times Magazine, The
Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times Magazine.
Gallagher is preacher-in-residence at Trinity Episcopal
Church in Santa Barbara, Calif. She gave sermons in faith
communities nationwide, including St. Mark’s Cathedral
in Seattle, St. Paul’s Cathedral in San Diego and Stanford
University’s Memorial Church. She lectured on writing and
taught writing workshops at Yale Divinity School and the
Festival of Homiletics as well as at other institutions with
grants from the Louisville Institute. Among her honors
are a Penny-Missouri journalism award and fellowships
at both the MacDowell Colony and Blue Mountain Center.

Grace Imathiu was educated in Kenya,
the Methodist Theological School in

Rolf Jacobson joined the Luther Seminary faculty as assistant professor of
Old Testament in July 2003. Prior to
joining the seminary, he served as associate pastor for Como Park Lutheran
Church in St. Paul, Minn., and taught
at Augsburg College as an assistant professor of religion.
Jacobson earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas, his M.Div. from Luther Seminary and
a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary. Jacobson
served as editor of “Crazy Talk: A Not-So-Stuffy Dictionary
of Theological Terms,” whose authors included three Luther Seminary graduates. His articles appeared in Word &

Joy Moore is an ordained elder in the
United Methodist Church (UMC) and received her Ph.D.
from the Brunel University London School of Theology.
Moore came to Fuller Theological Seminary in 2012, providing the vision to establish the William E. Pannell Center for African-American Church Studies. Previously, she
served at Duke University Divinity School, Asbury Theological Seminary and Adrian College. She also held pastorates in the Michigan area of the UMC. Moore contributed
a chapter to Andrew C. Thompson’s “Generation Rising:
A Future with Hope for the United Methodist Church” as
well as to the books, “Essential Truths” and “Unity, Liberty,
and Charity.” She also wrote for Sojourners magazine,
Christian Century, WorkingPreacher.org and Good News

Bronx.” Her latest book is “Hidden Inheritance: Family
Secrets, Memory and Faith,” about the discovery of her
Jewish roots. In her present position, Heidi also serves as
the executive director of her church’s shelter for homeless
LGBTQ youth. Neumark grew up in New Jersey, graduated
from Brown University and received her M.Div. from the
Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. She spent
a year at an ecumenical seminary in Argentina where she
engaged in human rights work. She has an honorary doctorate from Muhlenberg College.
Julie Pennington-Russell
Pastor, First Baptist Church of the City
of Washington, D.C.
Julie Pennington-Russell is a prominent Baptist minister. She received a
B.A. in communicative disorders from
the University of Central Florida in Orlando (1981) and her M.Div. from the
Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif. (1985). She served as pastor at
Nineteenth Avenue Baptist Church in San Francisco (19851998), Calvary Baptist Church in Waco (1998-2007) and
the First Baptist Church of Decatur (2007-2015). She began
her current pastorate at The First Baptist Church of the
City of Washington, D.C., in January 2016. Currently she
serves as a member of the advisory board for the religion
department of Carson-Newman University. She served
as a trustee for Mercer University, as a member of the
board for the Center for Christian Music Studies at Baylor
University and as a member of the board of directors for
the New Evangelical Partnership for the Common Good.
Her messages were featured on the television broadcast
“30 Good Minutes” and on “Day1” radio.

Leonard Pitts Jr. was awarded a degree in English from the University of
Southern California at the age of 19. He
is the author of one of the most popular
newspaper columns in the country and a series of critically-acclaimed books, including his latest, a novel, titled
“Freeman.” Pitts’ column, “We’ll Go Forward From This
Moment,” written in response to the Sept. 11 attacks, received international attention. He is the recipient of many
awards, including the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary.
Pitts’ work makes him an in-demand lecturer. He was invited to teach at Hampton University, Ohio University,
the University of Maryland and Virginia Commonwealth
University. In the fall of 2011, he was a visiting professor
at Princeton University, teaching a course in writing about
race. In 2013, he taught at George Washington University.
Michael A. Renninger is a priest of the
Catholic Diocese of Richmond. Born
and raised in Pennsylvania, he attended
Ursinus College, where he received degrees in philosophy and music history.
In 1985, he began priestly formation as a member of the
Norbertine Order at Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, Penn. He
later attended The Catholic University of America, where
he received graduate degrees in theology and liturgy. He
was ordained as priest for the Diocese of Richmond in
1993 and served as vicar for vocations and rector of the
cathedral. He travels throughout the United States, giving
presentations on spirituality, liturgy, music and sacramental theology. Richmond Magazine named Renninger one
of the top five inspirational speakers in Richmond.

A third-generation Chinese/Filipino,
armchair sociologist and technology
enthusiast, Bruce Reyes-Chow speaks
and teaches on faith, race, parenting
and technology in a variety of contexts. He is the author
of three books, most recently “40 Days, 40 Prayers, 40
Words: Lenten Reflections for Everyday Life.” Reyes-Chow,
a Presbyterian pastor for nearly 20 years, founded Mission Bay Community Church in San Francisco, a church
of young, multicultural and progressive Presbyterians. In
2008 he was the youngest person ever elected as moderator of the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church
(USA). Bruce received his B.A. in Asian-American studies,
philosophy and sociology from San Francisco State University (1991), his M.A. from San Francisco Theological
Seminary (1995) and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from
Austin College (2010).
Timothy Ross has served as pastor of
Hopwood Christian Church for 20 years.
He is an adjunct professor in cross-cultural ministry and spiritual formation
at Emmanuel Christian Seminary. Ross’ family lived for
several years among the Maasai people of Kenya. Ross
authored a chapter for the book, “From Each Brave Eye:
Reflections on the Arts, Ministry, and Holy Imagination.”

Peter Wallace is the president of the
Alliance for Christian Media and since
2001 has served as executive producer
and host of the “Day1” weekly radio
program and podcast, which features
outstanding preachers from mainline
churches. He is the author of nine books, including “The
Passionate Jesus: What We Can Learn from Jesus about
Love, Fear, Grief, Joy and Living Authentically;” “Living
Loved: Knowing Jesus as the Lover of Your Soul;” and “Connected: You and God in the Psalms.” Wallace is a graduate
of Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., and earned a
Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. He did a year of Episcopal studies at Candler School
of Theology at Emory University. He serves as assisting
priest for a church in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta.

Prior to serving at Ebenezer Baptist
Church, Raphael Warnock served at
the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church of
Birmingham, Ala., the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church of New York City
and Baltimore’s Douglas Memorial Community Church.
Under Warnock’s leadership, Ebenezer expanded its
legacy of social activism through several new ministries,
including EbenezerFest, Cutting Through Crisis, Faith &
Fitness, Jericho Lounge and the Martin Luther King Sr.
Community Resources Complex. Warnock received his
M.Div. and Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary. He
is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the 100
Black Men of Atlanta Inc. and a Lifetime Member of the
NAACP. Warnock is the recipient of more than a dozen
honors and awards, including the honor of delivering the
closing prayer at the 2013 inaugural prayer service, held
at the National Cathedral.
For 20 years, William H. Willimon was
dean of the chapel and professor of
Christian ministry at Duke University.
He served as pastor of churches in
Georgia and South Carolina. A graduate of Wofford College, Willimon holds a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School and a Doctor of Sacred
Theology from Emory University. He has been awarded
honorary degrees from a dozen colleges and universities.
In 1992, he was named the first distinguished alumnus
of Yale Divinity School. He is the author of 60 books. His
“Worship as Pastoral Care” was selected as one of the 10
most useful books for pastors in 1979 by the Academy
of Parish Clergy. He is the author of more than 60 books,
including a novel, “Incorporation,” published by Cascade.
He is editor-at-large for The Christian Century.

Lauren Winner writes and lectures
widely on Christian practice, the history
of Christianity in America and JewishChristian relations. Her books include
“Girl Meets God,” “Mudhouse Sabbath,” “Real Sex,” “A
Cheerful and Comfortable Faith” and, most recently, “Still:
Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis.” Winner’s research is supported by numerous institutions, including Monticello, the
Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, the Center for
the Study of Religion at Princeton University and the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University. Winner appeared
on PBS’ “Religion & Ethics Newsweekly” and served as a
commentator on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” She wrote
for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington
Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture
and Christianity Today. Her essays were included in several
volumes of “The Best Christian Writing.” She is a member
of the board of the Episcopal Preaching Foundation.
