EN photo: The Ministry of Economy Ladies and Gentlemen, Furniture industry in Poland is one of the most competitive departments of industry processing, generating approximately 2 per cent of the Polish GDP. Almost ninety per cent of the furniture produced in our country is exported. Furniture products find their consumers in Germany, France, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Holland, Spain, Italy and the United States. Going towards the expectations of European entrepreneurs, the Ministry of Economy has prepared a special promotion campaign titled ”Created in Poland”. There are two companies responsible for its preparation and realization – Poznan International Fair and The Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers. This campaign is a part of ”The promotion of the Polish economy on international markets” program, whose main objective is to present Polish innovative products and companies. The program includes Poland, Ukraine, Germany, Russia, France and Great Britain. We hope it will facilitate developing co-operation between furniture-oriented firms and institutions in the whole Europe. I would like to encourage you to get familiar with the offer of the Polish companies during the European trade fair, economic missions, trainings and conferences, as well as study visits of foreign journalists and contractors. All these events will take place within the program for furniture industry promotion. I am convinced that direct meetings and participation in specialist trainings and conferences will help us understand the specifity of cooperation with Polish companies better and open to an even greater extent for mutual business relations. Wishing you fruitful cooperation, I present you with a catalogue showing the successes of the Polish furniture branch. I am fully convinced that it will also serve as a practical guide facilitating the development of cooperation with Polish producers. Waldemar Pawlak Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy PROMOTION PROGRAM EXECUTORS The furniture industry promotion program is realized out of the Ministry of Economy’s order by the consortium of Poznan International Fair and The Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers. We invite you to contact the representatives of both institutions. 2 photo: Poznan International Fair photo: The Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers Ladies and Gentlemen, Ladies and Gentlemen, I cordially invite you to get familiar with the offer of Polish furniture branch companies during the European trade fairs in Poznan, Cologne, Bad Salzuflen, Moscow, Kiev, Paris and Birmingham. The presentations of the Polish companies are a part of a promotion campaign of Polish furniture industry which is carried out under the title of ”Created in Poland” within the actions of ”The promotion of the Polish economy on international markets” program by the Ministry of Economy. Over the period of the last twenty years, the Polish furniture industry has progressed to a narrow circle of the leaders of furniture export in the whole world. Almost 90 per cent of the furniture produced in Poland gets delivered to foreign markets. Unfortunately, for a foreign distributor, Polish furniture’s existence is still not very significant in terms of a producer brand. I have the pleasure to present you with this invitation on behalf of Poznan International Fair, the company, promoting the Polish furniture industry abroad for as long as 30 years already, which has again been given the opportunity to prepare the presentations promoting the Polish furniture branch in the abovementioned greatest fair cities of Europe. I would like to assure you that we are at your disposal and we will provide you with any necessary support in order to develop business contacts with Polish furniture producers. Being concise, professionally prepared, and consequently implemented by the consortium of OIGPM and MTP, the trade promotion program has nowadays become a key instrument in the development of the Polish brand abroad. The main motive of the campaign focuses around examples of successful furniture producers who export goods and services of the highest quality. I cordially invite you to meet during fairs, economic missions, trainings, as well as to participate in conferences and study visits for journalists and contractors. I am convinced that with our support, you will come across the great potential of the Polish furniture industry while developing new business contacts. Harrys Pub & Restaurant, Jönköping, Sweden, Famos MODERN PRODUCTION PROCESS Modernity in every respect of the production process is one of the assets of furniture produced in Poland; it is decisive of its popularity, quality, and endurance. The trend of investing in IT innovations, the latest technology and devices has for many years been the development and success factor of furniture manufacturers in Poland. And even if the peculiarity of produced furniture requires taking advantage of traditional technology, it is done with the use of systematically-upgraded machines, devices, and work organization systems. Computer systems of production operation used in Polish companies include integrated software, which enables efficient task performance from the moment of taking an order, through making a design, assembly manual, production preparation, production supervision, material consumption optimization, storing and dispatch, to servicing procedures. Numerical devices together with their modern software used for furniture production, which are common with Polish manufacturers, give the guarantee of precision and rational use of materials. Philadelphia Collection, Bydgoskie Meble MODERN MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS Certified quality management systems, most often ISO 9000, guard the performance standard at big companies of furniture industry in Poland. Productivity, efficiency, and production humanization are supported by systems by REFA methodology (REFA Bundesverbande.V.) A production process is most often monitored by ERP/MRP II systems. The companies like BPSC, IFS are among the biggest suppliers of advanced IT solutions of ERP / MRP II to companies of various organization structures. In the furniture industry companies like Atlas Meble Kuchenne (Atlas Kitchen Furniture), Beskidzkie Fabryki Mebli (Beskidy Furniture Factory), Com40, Deftrans, Dziedzic, Enkev, Fabryka Mebli Bodzio (Bodzio Furniture Factory), Gluck, Grupa Lubawa (Lubawa Group), Kaszub, Kler, Lupus, M&K Foam, Matkowski, Nomet, Nowy Styl (New Style), Paged, Profim, Pol-Skone, Sklejka-Eco, Wojtpol can all boast implemented systems. MODERN DELIVERY AND SERVICE LOGISTICS Despite the fact that Polish furniture is delivered to customers in industrial quantities, which is confirmed by 2.4 m tonnes of exported furniture in 2010 (in comparison, furniture export in Germany and Italy reached 1.8 m tonnes in each country), in most cases it was the furniture delivered on special orders taken around Europe by individual clients. How is that possible? Well, thanks to mass product customization systems, which are a standard in the Polish furniture industry. They make it possible to customize orders in hundreds of options and variants – through textiles, colors, shape configurations, and the like. Modern systems of work, management, and logistics used in the Polish industry are a warranty of meeting deadlines of orders, deliveries, and versatile services. The furniture ordered in Poland does not require ordering a whole container and waiting for production to fill it up completely, then be shipped, and later trans-shipped. The delivery logistics in Poland today enables delivering a piece of furniture within 48 hours in any place in the European Union as well as to the other countries in Europe. On Sunday you can eat dinner somewhere in Europe at a table produced in Poland on Friday. The biggest basin of furniture companies – Greater Poland – is just 2.5 hours of a car drive off the center of Berlin. On the basis of the border traffic agreement, the citizens of Russia, from the Kaliningrad Oblast, can watch the production of furniture around Gdańsk, Elbląg, or Olsztyn without visas (the visa-free traffic covers the area up to 100 km off the border). In this field as well, the Polish furniture industry is outstanding with respect to modernity, and diversity of its use and production. The short time which elapses between the appearance of anything new at components and accessories fair (Furnica in Poznań, SICAM in Pordenone, Interzum in Cologne, ZOW in Bad Salzuflen) and their usage in production is the indicator of how Polish furniture manufacturers attach significance to construction, materials, components, and semi-finished furniture parts. The highest-quality accessories and components for furniture are produced by hundreds of Polish companies like for example Astin, Bach, Sigma BK, Organika, Gamet, Melako, and Rejs. Many of them offer solu- Kitchen furniture set, Stolkar tions for non-standard, complicated, and tough projects, at the same time gaining recognition in Europe and around the world. With regard to the clearly noticeable global trend that more and more customers want to buy a particular brand, produced from components and by recognized companies, as well as in relation to splendor of offers of components and accessories available in Poland, in this case, the Polish furniture industry is at the highest worldwide level. CONSTRUCTION -TECHNOLOGY OFFICES AN ASSET OF POLISH FURNITURE INDUSTRY Construction-technology offices which are capable of making arrangement projects of a particular interior or working out technological solutions for the production of ready designs, as well as brand new innovatory solutions are a standard in Polish companies. All that occurs with the use of modern 3D software, if necessary together with making mock-ups, models printed on 3D printers, and even show-rooms. A highly-specialized crew of Polish engineers, technologists, programmers is generally able to cope with every single task. Technological and design solutions for working out products on the Vennesla Library, Norway, Famos 10 basis of individual customers’ projects; in other words, adjusting the technological and design solutions to a precisely defined furniture is an example of diverse capabilities of the Polish furniture-making. It is illustrated by examples of companies which are well-known on European market [Tagemt, Filipek Design]. Construction offices of Polish companies are able to realize dearest arrangements. Vennesla Library in Norway is an interesting example of their capabilities, and so are the newest football stadiums such as Stadion Narodowy (National Stadium) in Warsaw [Forum Seating], terminal 2 at Chopin Airport in Warsaw [Meble Roja], prestigious hotels [Paged, Bejot, Lege, Artis], development realizations [Janmar]. CENTURIES-OLD EXPERIENCE AND CRAFT TRADITION Centuries-old production experience of the Polish furniture companies is yet another crucial factor decisive of the quality and endurance of the furniture produced in Poland. A lot of companies known for its production around Europe have an over one-hundred-year-old tradition – an example of that being Bydgoskie Meble (1884), FAMOS (1852), FAMEG (1881), Paged Meble (1881); also, many Polish family-like companies such as Zakład Stolarski Meble Jończyk present in Dobrodzień since 1893 has been run by the family representatives for five genera- tions. Resulting from the history experience and practice have an immense influence upon the quality of work, just as is the case with the production of elements requiring manual work, like for example exclusive furniture. Moreover, the ethos of work resulting from craft tradition gives a guarantee of solidity, reliability, and also carrying out this work. Centuries-old tradition of furniture craft in Poland has formed a special attitude towards the endurance, and the quality of the produced furniture. SYSTEM OF VALUES CHARACTERISTIC FOR CRAFTSMAN’S WORK IS THE BASIS FOR POLISH FURNITURE COMPANIES ACTIONS A number of big Polish furniture companies, today often employing hundreds of workers and having a well-established position on European market, used to be small craft businesses. And even though a lot has changed when these were transformed into big enterprises, the system of values characteristic for a craftsman is still their basis of actions [Balma, Kler, Lissy, Ludwik Styl, Meblonowak, Rust, Szynaka Meble, Wajnert]. The location of Poland in the center of Europe, in the place where the influences of East and West, North and South have been crossing for centuries, is of great significance for the shaping of the Polish furniture industry. An excellent example of how the connection between Polish and European furniture-making have brought benefits to the European furniture industry is presented by Michael Thonet’s technology of bent furniture production, which has come to the Polish land and has been developed here. In 1881, the sons of Michael Thonet started a business in Radomsko called ‘Bracia Thonet’ (‘Thonet brothers’), which still acts under the name FAMEG, as well as in Jasienica which is today’s Paged Meble. It is in fact Paged Meble which developed Thonet’s technology and today is the only producer worldwide to have mastered and implemented square bent pieces. It is the globallyfamous chair of the ”8291” family that comes from Paged Mable, from the factory in Jasienice. For more than 130 year this company has specialized in the production of bent chairs. Kitchen furniture, Majchrzak On the basis of furniture tradition, a furniture basin has grown around Radomsko. Another interesting example proving connections between the history and the modern furniture industry is the cluster of Meble Elbląg (Halex, Jar-Stol, Kam, Krismar, Layman, Lupus, Stolzen), and some of the biggest companies in Poland: Fabryka Mebli Wójcik, and Stolpłyt. These companies are in the region, which can be considered the cradle of the famous, historical Gdańsk furniture – richly decorated furniture referring to the style of northern baroque and English rococo. ”Thonet” bent chairs, Paged Meble Dobrodzień, which used to be known as Guttenberg just a hundred years ago, is yet another example of a centuries-old tradition of furniture and historical connections with European culture. There are many more places with a long history of furniture production – Góra Kalwaria near Kraków (Cracow), Swarzędz and the area around Poznań, Kępno, and Twardogóra. Today the companies working practically around Poland benefit from the splendor of historical heritage and cultural connections with various regions of Europe. A dining room set ”Clash”, Ludwik Styl 11 THE MEANING OF PRODUCTION PROCESS – FANTASY AND PROFESSIONALISM OF POLISH DESIGNERS Polish design grows from a rich cultural background. Production process in Poland has been given a special rank – from the moment of information gathering, through proposing new solutions, their constant analyzing and improving, until the production process. The success of Polish furniture on global market is connected to a big extent with design thinking, which is a discipline to have become a platform for meetings between various scientists of a variety of experts of different fields and designers, architects, and producers [Meble Vox]. Plopp stool, Zieta Prozessdesign 4You bedroom collection, Vox Meble Arezzo corner sofa, Bizzarto Active research centers in Poland which specialize in design processes use modern analytical methods, like for example behavioral or cognitive analysis. Research and development (R&D) departments within certain enterprises employ specialists in various fields including experts in furniture ergonomics. Polish designers play crucial role in design processes. Educated at the famous Polish and worldwide universities, working in world-famous design offices and laboratories, and exhibiting their projects around the world, they have a decisive influence upon the aesthetical culture of the Polish furniture industry. Numerous international awards confirm the position and authority of the Polish designers. It is on regular basis that Polish designers are awarded in Red Dot, the biggest and the most famous designer competition in the world where 12 thousand companies and entities from 60 countries participate. Oskar Zięta, Agata Kulik-Pomorska, Paweł Pomorski, Renata Kalarus, Anna Vonhausen are among others the people to have been presented with the Red Dot awards. It is also necessary to mention other designers whose position in the world of design is already well-established: Tomek Rygalik, Tomasz Augustyniak, Piotr Kuchciński, Grzegorz Niwiński, Jerzy Porębski, Anna Hrecka, Marta Krupińska, Krystian Kowalski, Michał Biernacki, Jarosław Szymański, Piotr Wierczyński, Maciej Zień, Ewa Minge. Among such a lot of popular and prestigious contests in Poland it is Top Design, organized within Arena Design, which is a part of furniture fair organized by Poznan International Fair. SAVOY collection, Fabryki Mebli “Forte” VERSATILE OFFER, DIVERSITY OF STYLES It would be difficult to find a type or a kind of furniture which was not produced in Poland. What the Polish furniture industry offers is: upholstered furniture, bent furniture, kitchen, bathroom, office, living room, dining room, bedroom furniture, medical furniture, furniture for children rooms and for schools, wardrobes and storing systems, conference hall furniture, auditorium rooms furniture, furniture with higher safety parameters allowed to be used in public areas, garden and recreation-amusement furniture, restaurant and hotel furniture, and furniture for sport structures and special tasks. What is more, there are at least a few dozens, and sometime hundreds, of producers who present their offer within the same furniture category. A lot of designs and patterns 12 of Polish furniture and technologies have been patented in Europe and around the world. More than a third of dining room and living room furniture produced in Europe originates from Poland. Every fifth piece of upholstered furniture produced in Europe is Polish. This versatile offer diversity of the Polish furniture industry, on the other hand, influences the diversity of the styles offered. In Poland, the manufactured furniture involve: classical and strictly designer furniture, from country style to city look, in historical style and very modern, in Italian, English, French, and Scandinavian styles. In cases where furniture is produced from solid wood, the wood is a very precious material at every step. Briquette and pellets – ecological biofuel – are produced from sawdust. The chips are sold to wood-based board factories or pulp mills, whereas the bark is burnt in their own ecological boiler plants or transferred for gardening purposes. The modern heat and power stations, where energy is produced from the remaining biomass (chips and shavings), make the enterprises energy independent in a way which is harmless for the natural environment. All the waste is processed into electric energy and in Poland special emphasis is put on the implementation of solutions which reduce harmfulness and environmental nuisance, i.e. the emission of volatile organic compounds. For this reason, investments into the most modern solution in Europe are carried out – the CEFLA TIF-40 installation. It is just one out of many other manifestations of active pro-ecological attitudes of the Polish manufacturers. The other visible direction which the furniture producers follow is eliminating materials coming from illegal sources by means of FSC, PEFC accreditation as well as by means of the delivery chains management. Primavera table, Malow 95% of wood acquired for production in Poland comes from National Forest, and only 5% from other sources – it can be concluded that practically all furniture companies in Poland process material deriving from a certified source, and a lot of companies have FSC accredited production processes! Owing to the wood area certified by FSC in Poland which equals 6 million 979 thousand hectares, it is worth mentioning that around Europe only the bigger countries have more FSC certified forest – Russia and Sweden, and PEFC certified – Finland, Belarus, Norway, and Germany. The import of wood and lumber is little. On the basis of the data from Forest Stewardship Council, more than a thousand of FSC and Chainof-Custody certificates have been awarded to Polish companies, including more than 320 which have been awarded to companies producing furniture. PEFC certificates are less popular, as 49 have been issued for Poland, including a few for furniture manufacturers. In Poland, approximately a half of the wood mass is taken advantage of, which grows in the Polish forest continuously increasing forest resources. In ecologically-famous Scandinavia as much as 70-80% of an annual wood growth is gained. Thus, stable and responsible forestry is maintained in Poland. The area of forest in Poland has increased by about 269 thousand hectares over the last decade and by as much as 2 million 860 thousand hectares over 75 years. 097 Program, Kler 14 ATTESTATIONS, CERTIFICATES, TESTS AS A GUARANTEE OF POLISH FURNITURE QUALITY Not only do Polish manufacturers pay immense attention to ecology, which is outstanding compared to the rest of the world, but also it is impressive how they care for certificates, hygiene attestations and endurance checks, which are the guarantee of the quality of Polish furniture. Polish producers take the certification processes of their products very seriously. About 90% of the furniture is exported. It is possible due to meeting high ecological standards by Polish companies. The regulations which are binding in Poland with respect to ecological furniture parameters comply with the norms of the European Committee for Standardization – the EN and ISO norms. The full scope of norms has been binding since 2004 in case of Poland. Also, for 15 years TÜVRheinland group, originating from Germany, has been present in Poland, and is the authority in the field of testing and certification. It has 11 offices in many different parts of Poland and a group of more than 1000 experts and auditors. TÜVRheinland certifies furniture industry with respect to T+M and GS (Geprüfte Sicherheit) signs. Additionally, there are 11 institutions accredited to test and certify the furniture. One of them is Instytut Technologii Drewna (the Institute of Wood Technology) in Poznań which runs the Laboratory of Wood Examination, Wood-based Materials, Packaging, Furniture, Construction and Woodworking Machines. It is famous for its unusually high study standards, and its position is indicated by the fact that the paper it publishes meets the strict requirements qualifying it for the ISI Master Journal List. It is very often that Polish producers test their furniture directly on the market, where the products are destined. They do it by means of the German TÜV Süd, LGA Nürnberg, the Swiss SGS S.A., or the British FIRA International Ltd. ATTRACTIVE PRICES AS MODERN PRODUCTION PROCESS DERIVATIVE The attention which Polish producers pay to ecological standards and certification as well as other assets of Polish furniture does not affect its prices. The prices of Polish furniture are lower by 28% on average compared to other European Union countries and they have remained leveled for some years. Lower prices in the Polish furniture industry are the outcome of various purposeful actions run for this reason. A proper work and production organization, optimal materials management, experienced staff, as well as advanced technologies led to the reduction of cost-consuming production process factors in the Polish furniture industry. Mula armchair, Polish Embassy in Brussels, Design: D44 Architecture sprl, Furniture NOTI, Photo: Tomasz Cibulla For 20 years the Polish furniture industry has been strongly represented at prestigious fairs and worldwide exhibitions. Polish furniture, as well as accessories and furniture components can also be seen in Milan, Cologne, Berlin, Moscow, Petersburg, and Kiev. As usual, these draw attention, are distinguished and rewarded. Quality, endurance, diversity, aesthetics, comfort, and functionality are the features which have been appreciated in the Polish furniture by its users around the world.
