Lying in the far south of Greece,
the Mani Peninsula is not an easy
place to get to. Once there, however,
the rewards are great, from historic
wonders to stunning natural beauty.
Traversing the road less traveled has always
been part of the Serengeti ® experience.
The same unrelenting spirit of discovery that
drives our lens technology also extends to the
locations where we test it.
This year, we chose the Mani Peninsula in
southern Greece, exploring the roadways
that once served Ancient Sparta, as we made
our way through a rugged and awe-inspiring
landscape little changed since Thucydides first
chronicled it in the 5th Century BC.
From remote mountain passes to spectacular
seaside highways, the peninsula’s landscape is
constantly changing, as is the sublime Mediterranean
light. It’s the ideal setting for experiencing
advanced photochromic technology — and the
unparalleled versatility of the world’s finest

We not only pioneered photochromic technology,
we also engineer it into every lens we make.
By constantly adjusting to changing light conditions,
Serengeti ® photochromic lenses do the work
for you, providing your eyes with the optimal
amount of light at all times. Darkening in bright
sunlight and lightening in overcast conditions,
the lenses allow you to experience enhanced
contrast and discern shapes and colors more
quickly, eliminating both eyestrain and the loss
of detail.
In bright conditions, when UV radiation is more
intense, the polarity of the lens molecules
expands in size, darkening the lenses and
allowing them to absorb more light. In darker
conditions, when UV radiation is less intense,
the molecules shrink and separate, letting
additional light pass through.

Natural Light
Specifically designed to interact with the
full spectrum of light, Serengeti’s ® Spectral
Control ® filters fine-tune your vision by
selectively managing light wavelengths.
Haze and glare are dramatically diminished,
contrast is enhanced, and eye fatigue is
reduced. As a result, objects appear sharper
and more clearly defined — regardless of
the weather conditions.
“Blue Blur” occurs when blue light, the shortest
and harshest of light wavelengths, focuses
in the front of the eye’s retina instead of behind
it, where other light waves tend to focus. This
can cause eyestrain and fatigue, resulting in
reduced sharpness.
Serengeti ® photochromic lenses block this
distracting blue light, letting just enough through
to prevent color alteration. This allows for a richer
and more balanced view that helps relax the eyes.
Organized Light
Serengeti ® photochromic lenses also pass the
Traffic Signal Recognition Test, which gauges
the amount of red light a lens actually blocks.
If a red traffic light appears red through the lens,
the sunglasses pass. If the red light appears
blackish, as it does when viewed through most
blue-blocking sunglasses, they fail.

materials — providing unsurpassed visual acuity.
It’s not every day a sunglass manufacturer wins the coveted
international Silmo d’Or Award. Actually, it had never
happened before, until the Serengeti ® Polar PhD™ lens took
home the honor for innovation and performance. Built with
NXT ® technology and made from Trivex ® material, which is 75%
lighter than glass and 10% lighter than polycarbonate, our
Polar PhD™ lens offers stunning visual acuity and the utmost
UVA/UVB protection. The lens also provides an high impact
resistance and is therefore suitable for sport. Every lens
incorporates three technologies that control the way light
interacts with it.
The process begins with borosilicate optical glass from
Corning,® which can withstand extreme temperature
changes. The lenses are chemically tempered to ensure
scratch and impact resistance, then ground to perfection.
The lenses then undergo Serengeti’s ® patented Hydrogen
Firing Process. Hydrogen-fueled Lehr furnaces activate
each lens with our photochromic and Spectral Control ®
technologies with varying high temperatures determining
their proprietary lens color. After the lenses cool, they are
treated with a unique coating that protects their edges,
all while being closely monitored by a technician.
Staying true to Serengeti’s ® commitment to craftsmanship,
we give unparalleled attention to detail throughout every
phase of the lens-making process.
Photochromic technology instantly adapts to changing
light conditions. Spectral Control® manages specific colors
in the light spectrum for the utmost definition, contrast
and color enhancement. And polarization minimizes
distracting surface glare on the road and reduces eye
fatigue. Additional advancements include our hydro and
oleophobic coatings on the front and back of each lens,
which help repel water, fingerprints, dirt and debris — and
a seven-layer optical anti-reflective coating absorbs glare
to eliminate backside reflections.

Lightweight, extremely strong and corrosion resistant, titanium is used in everything from
sports equipment to space capsules. Beta titanium, a combination of vanadium and aluminum,
is lightweight, strong and highly flexible, ideal for use in temples as it expands the fit range of
the sunglass. Memory titanium is a combination alloy that is flexible and lightweight, with the
ability to return to its original shape when bent or twisted.
