Welcome to a very wet Issue 8 of Urban RacR. I don’t mean wet in the sense of
pornography but rather that winter has finally arrived which means the rain is making it
very difficult to keep our cars sparkling clean. Speaking of pornography, this leads me
to our cover car... we feature Neil’s combination of pornographically booming Italian
Flair. Bass booming leads me to our next feature which is a prize-winning SQcompeting favourite amongst the people’s car lovers.
Winter is now at full storm, pardon the pun. May was a very unpredictable month as
to the success of events. Regionals had a fair share of action in the wet with quite a
few spills. The Wesbank Super Series Nationals was also down in the Cape - you can
expect it in issue 9. Speaking of events, we bring you the revival of drag racing in
Cape Town with the first successful MSA drag meeting and pics from a Street 2 Strip
events that didn’t get rained out. We also bring you the highlights of the Canal Walk
Extreme Motor Show and Gymkhana as well as some of the fresh metal to be
released by major car manufacturers, albeit some are only concepts. Come and go
drifting with Takumi-san. You don’t know what that is? Well read what he has to say in
his monthly column, its encompassing to say the least and I’m sure you’ll learn a
thing or two.
I urge to check out our advertisers website, email or call them - just please don’t
harass them, hey. We are also on the lookout for some HOTT chicks to be Urban
models, so if you (speaking to the ladies here) or your girlfriend/s, think you have what
it takes, drop us a mail.
If you don’t already know, Urban RacR has a YouTube channel so check our site and
watch the clips. Don’t forget about the online gallery links in every event article and
also subscribe to the magazine. You may just end up winning prizes in time to come.
From me, Waanie, I leave you to enjoy this Issue and hope to see you as at the
next event!

FLYIN’
FEATHERWEIGHT
The fact that a Caterham R500 superlight is
faster around the Top Gear test track than a
Bugatti Veyron is a collection of factors. A
Bugatti Veyron weighs 1 888kg. A Caterham
R500 only weighs 470kg. My plate of dinner
weighs more than a R500, no really – it does.
In the end this all translates into a power to
weight ratio… The Bugatti's is 522Bhp/ton VS
the R500's is 532Bhp/ton.

Counter in the fact that the
R500 can change direction
like a fly and suddenly you
have a Bugatti Veyron with
hot, stinky, steamy shit all
over its face! Furthermore –
you could probably buy 20

impressive 127Bhp/ton. Are
you seeing the pattern?
The fact that a little 1.4
Turbo'd Uno could do
200km/h at the drop of a
hat was about the same to
us car nuts as pornography
to a pimple infested 15
year old. This in 1992 was
also half the hype. VW had
gone all mushy with their
3rd GTi and the VR6 was
out of reach for some too.
The Opel tS was in another
league all together so here
we had a 'cheap' little
pocket rocket that could
be turned into an atom
bomb at the click of ones
fingers…
Now truthfully – this article is
actually NOT about a
Caterham R500 superlight
– but about something that
has similar characteristics in
my mind. Mainly - weight.
The Uno Turbo isn't the
heaviest lump around,
tipping the scales at a
slight 925kg. Neither is it the
safest – but that is part of
the appeal. Men like to
think they've escaped an
encounter with death. A
Golf III GTi has a measly
power to weight ratio of
100Bhp/ton and the mighty

It’s a virus boet, one you wouldn’t mind getting
Having owned a VW Mk3 myself I rate the looks of
this example second to none. Heavier than its
predecessors, as a VW fan one would have to opt
for the VR6 in this model iteration. Apart from the
looks and 2.8l “staggered” 6 cylinder engine with
that orgasmic sound, purring at idle or screaming
through the rev range - the potential it offers
means it’s sought after amongst fanatics -that is

on a Sunday drive or having it
polished for the next major car
show. When it comes to his car,
no price is too expensive for
Samir and he chooses only the
best. With a customised exterior
featuring classy bodywork, the
just-right drop and 18” SSW
wheel design filling the arches
coupled to a showroom finish
paint job even J Lo can admire
herself in the reflection of, gives
this VR6 a true Euro look.
If you pay close attention
though, Samir has not done
much, he knows the trick to
making a Golf 3 look HOT, less
is more, and in that respect, he
has done A HELLUVA LOT!
Enough of how much a stunner
this car is, let's go inside.
Besides the initial changes you
will see like the Isotta steering
wheel, chrome VW styled gear
knob, fire extinguisher and
aluminium pedals, I draw your
attention to the rear end. This is
where you find a sound system
w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a
of note, and it's not all about
the bass. Being in the sound
install business for many years
now, Samir opted for an SQ
sound install this time, and for
those not in the know, that's
much harder than building a
system to just compete with
the taxi that comes to pick up
the kids from the school down
the road. The boot install is a
custom one; housing a 12”
Calibra in the centre of the
boot powered by a 2800w
Calibra Stealth monoblock,
giving some feel to the sound.
Alongside the monoblock is a
1600w 4 channel Stealth amp
to power the Calibra splits
housed up front in their

custom coloured surrounds; in
the centre of the two amps is
a digital voltage gauge, just
to make sure he's able to start
the car if the sound's been
pumping. To control all of this
Samir chose a Pioneer head
unit alongside which resides a
very rare Nokia Bluetooth car
kit with screen, just to keep it
legal should a client call while
cruising around pumping the
system.
Quality is of great
importance to Samir and his
team, and with his VR6 as an
example, I could damn well
understand why!

’ drags
Just when drag racing was seemingly a dying
sport in Cape Town with the revising of rules
and regulations from the MSA, Killarney and
the WPMC went forward to contest it and the
rest, can be read in previous issues of Urban
RacR. Coupled to all of this, with 400m drags
still being allowed at Killarney, a new drag
racing committee was structured and the
sport has taken a turn for the better.
With previous meetings this
year having what can be
classified as a disappointing
turnout, this was the first

meeting of the year which
actually shocked us. Having
been originally planned for a

rained out. With so many
public holidays having been
enjoyed in the April/May
months, another date was
quickly set and racing
commenced. It saw the return
of numerous familiar faces and
cars not seen for some time
now. Some of the usual
contenders had some work
done to them, body and motor
wise while others had new
signage and sponsors.
The blue 2l 16v side draught

than before with a new motor,

times achieved on the day as
that was not the point of the
meeting. It was to have fun,
but more importantly it was
the first meeting of the year
running the brackets system.
An unofficial championship
was run last year and this year
will see the first official bracket
racing championship. What is
bracket racing? Let me give
you a quick course of
brackets 101: Previously, drag

heads-up racing, you pull up to
the line and challenge
whoever is next to you. In
brackets, you nominate a time,
probably would be best a time
which you normally run, or
close to that and you race.
Should you break out more
than 2% of that time
nominated time, you lose out
to your opponent. The winner of
that race then goes on to the
next race and so on and so on
working his, or her way up the
ranks. Let me tell you, it can
be flipping nerve wrecking to say
the least.
We at Urban RacR Magazine are
excited about the new life in
drag racing. I would also be
failing in my duties if I did not
mention the new forum to do
with drag racing at Killarney...

Not too long after racing had

Prodrift was started in 2003 by Graham McNamara, the brother of Irish star
drifter and Formula D driver Darren McNamara and is the longest running
drift series in Europe. It also one of the EDC's biggest competitors. There are
two different Prodrift series, one for Ireland and another that travels across
Europe and works with other European drift organizations. Prodrift events can
be seen in places like Sweden, Finland and Benelux. Prodrift is trying hard to
engage the European drivers to compete with the series' Irish drivers but it
can be difficult task uniting all the different countries of Europe. Prodrift
events seem to be a haven for the AE86 Corolla & AE85 Levin, cars which
have been phased out in many other pro drift series due to bigger, faster
circuts & powerful 600+ horsepower silvia's, chasers, etc etc.

King of Europe
The King of Europe is a fast growing drift series that also happens to be one
of the most ambitious in the world. In 2008 K.O.E held events in places as far
reaching as Russia, Serbia, and the Czech Republic. In 2007 there was even
an event in Dubai! The KOE is also one of the few drift series worldwide
where European cars outnumber Japanese cars. The BMW 3-series in
particular is an extremely popular platform for drivers in this series. The
current series champ is well known drifter Paul Vlasblom of the Netherlands
who drives an E36 BMW 3-series wagon and even afew old camaro's & trans
JDM Allstars
JDM Allstars is also a UK-based drift series and includes many drivers from
the EDC. While the EDC focuses on the competition aspect of drift, JDM
Allstars is more about the showmanship of drifting. The few events that have
been held so far have been done on smaller courses than the EDC.
After Japan, its off the United States where drifting first began its
worldwide spread in popularity.

Hellenic Drift Championship
Greece has a surprisingly large drift movement. In fact, in 2007 & 2008
Team Orange performed drift demos for the Greek fans at car shows & at
their version of “KING OF THE MOUNTAIN” at the Ritsona Rally. At the forefront
of the drift scene in Greece is the Hellenic Drift Championship which was just
started in 2008. The judge for the this new series is "Sleepy" who also judges
in the EDC & even judged at the South African National Drift Series I
attended in 2008 ,that was held at Killarney Race Track in Cape Town , The
Greek drift scene has a very interesting mix of cars including Japanese and
European cars and it also looks to have a large number of classic cars that
can still be seen competing.
Australia
Of course the car-crazed Aussies also have a very
large drift scene. There are a few different drift series
that are held across Australia.
Drift Australia
The biggest series down under is the Toyo Tyres Drift Australia series. Started in
2005 Drift Australia's calendar includes events that take place all over the
large country. Like Formula D, the Drift Australia series also sees national TV
coverage in Australia, except the coverage for each round is three hours
long in total! D.A is considered the "official" Australian Drift Championship. A
few of the top Australian drifters even went to the United States in 2007 for
the D1GP all star event. The cars in this series include a lot of Japanese
imports and even a couple examples of Australia's native Holden (their
version of the Chevy Lumina) muscle cars. A unique aspect of the D.A series
is the long length of the courses they run on and many of them have
straight sections between the corners.
The bad news I received the other day was that Drift Australia have
announced that the '09 Championship will consist of a single round
championship event on the 19th & 20th of September 2009.The reason
given was that the Global Economic Climate has forced main sponsor
TOYO TYRES, to batten down its finances & that meant they had to scale
down their sponsorship towards the series for 2009.Series director Wayne
Boatwright said that they were very grateful for Toyo's support over the last 4
years, and they will remain positive about the future of the sport in Australia
and will focus their attention on trying to secure the backing required to
rebuild the championship to a MULTI-ROUND SERIES.
Nordic Drift Series
Pro drifting for Norway, Finland, and Sweden. This series also has a wide
variety of cars. If you search for galleries of this series on the net you will spot
a few ex-D1GP cars imported from Japan being driven here. BMW cars are
also popular here although the majority drive Japanese machines. You will
notice a lot of the really cool BMW's coming from this series.
