August 2011 THE NEWSLETTER OF PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING INC. (PDNR) In this Issue: > Tribute to Ray Wallace > Changes for Spring Championship > Results – 2011 Winter Champs > Results – 2011 PDNR Challenge WELCOME Welcome to another edition of The Racers Edge. We have another jam packed newsletter with heaps of information from the track, paddock and meeting room. In this edition you will hear from club President Chris Stanley and Secretary Steve Valletta who give their take on the recent action at PDNR. We also have some touching tributes to Ray Wallace, who if you are not yet aware passed away recently. Ray was a long time member of PDNR and a regular friendly face at all RC events. He will be greatly missed. We also cover some important changes that the Committee are introducing from next championship (Spring 2011), so make sure you take a moment to get up to speed on this information. We have race results from the Autumn Championship, Winter Champs and PDNR Challenge – and a few good pictures as well! PDNR are also being presented with many potentially exciting opportunities, none less than the opportunity of building an off-road track at SIRC. At this stage the club are trying to gauge the level of interest and support that would exist for an off-road track, so if you have any feedback or want to express your support please contact a Committee member. Also on the horizon is a very special birthday celebration. PDNR will turn 10 next year, and they are planning some fun and special activities to mark the milestone of 10 years since incorporation. PDNR has an even longer history, but became an officially incorporated association in 2002. And finally a quick reminder that memberships are due for renewal by the end of September. Catch you at the track! Cheers, Pit Crew Chief THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 2 August 2011 PRESIDENT’S REPORT With the conclusion of the Autumn Championship and the warmer weather on its way it’s time to reflect on how things are progressing with our club. The Autumn Championship has seen some very close and competitive racing with some classes being decided during the last 15 minute triple points round, which always makes for some interesting racing. Like always our club has benefited from the hard work of some members and one non member. In particular Bruce Berg who is a true soldier when it comes to track set up and pack up, Darrel Thompson with assistance at race control, Matt Oxford for all his odd jobs around the club, Raylene Woodbury for assistance in the canteen, Michael Turner for stocking and running the canteen and of course Tony Firth for his role as Competition Secretary. These and many others make it possible not only to race each week but sets the high standard at which our club operates and as the President of our club I would like to take this opportunity to thank these people. As our club moves forward we’ve managed to acquire a number of new resources which includes and fantastic new ‘Stanley’ air compressor, a body wash bin, marshalling numbers (which double as handy props for the podium photos) and some new lighting around the truck. We’re also in the process of manufacturing a stand to move our wires in front of the truck off the ground and a new registration board. Apart from the Autumn Championship the club has once again been fortunate enough to host the Racing Lines Winter Champs and the PDNR Challenge. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 3 August 2011 Both these events were very successful for our club attracting drivers from not only PDNR but also SORMCC and NSWRCCC. These drivers enjoy some great sunshine and close racing and one could be forgiven in thinking that the Winter Champs was actually the Summer Champs. Many of our members and Committee assisted with the organising and running of these events which resulted in a positive and professional image of PDNR. For those of you interested in trying your hand at drag racing now is the time. The warmer weather is on the way, great facilities and resources and now some discounted entry fees should hopefully encourage the racers to get involved. You don’t need to have a purpose built drag car to participate, any car will do and it’s a great way to get the younger kids involved. For more information see David Lolacono or Rod Albronda or visit the PDNR web site. Looking forward there are some positive things happening behind the scenes with our club and some great events coming up. These include the Ray Wallace Memorial Race Day, Spring Championship, National Titles (VIC), Drag Racing and the 2.4 Hour Le Mans. The club my also be presented with an opportunity to move to a newer/better surface within SIRC which will hopefully progress the club even further. Chris Stanley President [email protected] THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 4 August 2011 SECRETARY’S REPORT Fellow PDNR members First I’d like to say what a sad end to a championship it has been to lose one of our long time members in Mr Ray Wallace. Ray has been a consistent racer at PDNR for some years now, with the attitude of having fun and just like the rest of us enjoys the mateship that PDNR brings to the table every Tuesday night. In the many years that I have known Ray he has always been a gentleman off and on the track, to Ray’s family, PDNR's condolences for your loss. What's going on? Can it be, another championship done and dusted? Is it just me or do you see the weeks of a championship fly by as if there's no tomorrow? As we have witnessed the championship has come to an end and once again its been enjoyable to participate in a another season of racing. These days it seems to be an honour to race at PDNR, rather than a right as the club still has a great atmosphere and the gathering of its members on Tuesday nights is still a highlight of my week. Congratulations to the members who have made the podium, and for those who tried hard and just missed out your time will come. For the new members and drivers, welcome, and be patient, enjoy the racing first and foremost. To the Committee who volunteer their time so PDNR can be the club that it is, thank you! Bring on the Spring Championship and with that the warmer weather, and good luck to all those who will challenge once again for those top 3 spots. Steve Valletta Secretary 0414 589 333 THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 5 August 2011 RAY “STRIPY” WALLACE ~ In Memorandum ~ It is with much sadness that PDNR share news of the passing of Ray Wallace on Sunday August 15, 2011. Ray was a part of PDNR for a number of years from 2005 and was effortless in his contribution to PDNR and the RC community in general. Ray finished at the pointy end on many occasions and was holding 3rd place in Open Pan at the time of his passing. We will miss you Ray! A funeral is to be held at Pinegrove Crematorium - North Chapel (enter off Great Western Highway Minchinbury), on Wednesday 24th August, 10.00am. A gathering will be held with hot and cold finger foods coffee and tea following service at the function rooms of Richmond Golf Club, 34 Bourke Street Richmond. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 6 August 2011 RAY WALLACE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT With the recent passing of one of our long standing and respected members in Ray Wallace, I thought it was appropriate to acknowledge Ray and his contribution to our club and hobby. I knew Ray for the past 6 or so years but in that time we become friends, enjoyed many great race meets together and had even more laughs. Ray was one those guys who wanted to befriend and help all those that enjoy our hobby. Whether it was your first time on the track or a National Championship, Ray just wanted to be a part of it and enjoy the company of others who have similar interests. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 7 August 2011 He just loved standing around the pits ‘chewing the fat’ with fellow racers talking about all things good and bad in our hobby and when there was something needed doing Ray was the type of person who never turned his back. He was a good person to have around our club. However Ray not only enjoyed on road nitro racing at PDNR, he loved his electric cars too from 1/12th scale right through to touring cars, from Merrylands (20 years ago) to Windsor, Ray was a constant friendly face in the pits. If it was an RC car Ray had one and always wanted to race it and with that he made many good friends right throughout Sydney. It’s times like these that puts everything back into perspective and makes us remember why we all initially got into this hobby. We’re all out there to win and try our best, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter if you come 1st, 2nd or last. What does matter is the amount of enjoyment and satisfaction we take away with us whilst at all times enjoying the company of people who have similar interests to yours. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 8 August 2011 Ray’s passing is a very sad loss, not only to our club but the greater RC community and leaves behind two young children who now don’t have a father to grow up with. But in true RC spirit we have bound together and with the great support of local importers and distributors a benefit day will be held at SORMCC on the 10th and 11th of September 2011. This will be a mixed nitro and electric event with all proceeds being put into a trust fund for Ray’s children. If you’re able to make it I’m sure Ray would appreciate it if he was here with us today. Ray’s podium results at PDNR include: 2005 Summer - 3rd Nitro Kit 2005 Autumn - 2nd Nitro Kit 2006 Summer - 3rd Single Speed & 3rd Outlaw 2007 Summer - 3rd Man Truck 2008 Autumn - 3rd Outlaw 2008 Spring - 1st Outlaw 2009 Spring - 1st EDAM Exer 2011 Autumn – 3rd Open Pan (honorary) Our thoughts are with you Ray. The first batch has been produced and most cards have been distributed. Membership Renewals are due in September, so new cards will be produced for 2012 members. Mates Rates – Here To Stay PDNR are excited to announce that the “mates rates” offer is here to stay. During the 2010 Spring Championship, PDNR introduced a special “mates rates” offer, and the Committee recently gave the green light for the offer to continue indefinitely. To take advantage of the offer, keep an eye out for friends or neighbours using their nitro RC vehicles and then invite them along to a Tuesday night race meetings and they can race their first two nights at a discounted rate. New entrants who are introduced by an existing PDNR driver get their first two race nights for only $8 per division. See Registration for more details. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 12 August 2011 RULE CHANGES – SPRING 2011 The Committee have introduced a number of changes and clarifications which will come into action starting from the 2011 Spring Championship. The following is an extract or summary of this information. Please check the relevant sources – such as the PDNR website or Competition Rules & Racing Guidelines – for full details. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please contact a Committee member. NITRO KIT The performance exclusion rule is being re-introduced to Nitro Kit. 14.11.1 Applying from Spring 2011 - 1st and 2nd placings in a Nitro Kit championship are not eligible to run in any subsequent Nitro Kit championships. ALL DIVISIONS A new rule has been introduced to all divisions. 14.12 Vehicles in all divisions must only contain 1 x fuel tank. TRACK PACK UP – ROLL CALL PDNR are to trial a roll call system at the end of racing during Spring 2011 in an effort to improve the involvement of drivers from the last two divisions who are currently required to help pack up. The roll call system will be reviewed at the end of Spring 2011. The system is essentially a roll call that is conducted at the end of track pack up (which is determined by the roller shutter being closed, and curtains down on the trailer). Drivers who are not present (or who do not have a substitute present) will incur a penalty. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 13 August 2011 TRACK PACK UP - PENALTIES To coincide with the trial roll call system for track pack up, PDNR have revised the penalty system that applies to drivers who do not fulfil their pack up responsibilities. Failure to assist with track pack up (when required) 1st Offence = Loss of 1 minute track time 2nd Offence = Loss of 1 minute track time Continued = As per Committee see fit Drivers are reminded that should they not be able or available to fulfil their pack up duty, they need to arrange for a substitute to cover them. There are many regular members and Committee packing up every week, so it should be reasonably easy to arrange a substitute. OPEN PRACTICE OPPORTUNITY Following the repeated requests for open practice, PDNR have established a scenario where registered drivers may have an opportunity to practice. The track may be available for open practice between 6.30pm and 7.00pm with the following conditions: 1) Drivers must be registered in a Championship division on the night (excluding novice or kids) 2) If the track is not set up by 6.30pm the open practice will not start until set up completed. 3) Open practice will conclude at 7.00pm. 4) The track is completely set up including all barriers and protection for spectators. 5) Race control announces that the track is open for practice. 6) Drivers or their pit crew are responsible to marshal their own vehicle. 7) A maximum of ten vehicles on the track at any time. 8) Drivers are responsible to drive in a safe manner allowing for other drivers of varying ability and vehicles of different scale and speed. (just like at any other track) 9) Drivers must drive in the same direction as racing. 10) Frequency pegs must be used for crystal based radios. (Rowing Club) THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 17 August 2011 DRIVER PROFILE The first driver we have chosen to feature this edition would be a familiar face to any regular RC racer. Name: Shaun Kaltenbacher Nickname: Cucumber Classes: Pull Start, Outlaw, Pro Tourer, Open Pan Brands: Kyosho, Capricorn and Mugen Achievements: Winning Pull Start more times than all other drivers put together!!! History: Shaun has been racing Nitro RC since 2006 when he joined PDNR. Starting in Novice, it was only a few weeks before Shaun was showing progress and he was encouraged to enter Pull Start in the 2006 PDNR Challenge. Shaun placed 3rd in the B-Final (13th overall) in his first major event. From there Shaun progressed out of Novice into Nitro Kit, and found the podium in his second season. He then moved up to Pull Start, which as it turned out would become a very happy hunting ground. By the 2008 Autumn Championship, Shaun had established himself at PDNR and took victory in both Pull Start and Outlaw divisions. From 2008, Shaun finished on the podium for Pull Start in every single championship, except in Summer 2010 when he switched divisions to try his luck in Open Pan...which he also won! THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 18 August 2011 In his five years at PDNR, he has become PDNR’s most awarded driver. In addition to his many achievements at PDNR, Shaun has won two successive National Championships, two wins in the Summer Nats, and wins in the Sydney GP, Winter Champs and PDNR Challenge. Shaun was also crowned PDNR Club Champion in 2009. Off the circuit, Shaun can usually be found in the middle of some friendly banter, and the antics are quite entertaining – that’s if he is not helping out or pitting for a fellow racer. Shaun is extremely generous with his time and knowledge, and is always happy to offer advice and share his experiences with other drivers. His rapid progress up the ranks is a testament to his hard work and dedication, and he is the perfect example of how a driver can progress through the ranks of PDNR up to State and National events. We had a chat with Shaun and asked him a few on the spot questions. Current cars: Mugen MRX-5, Kyosho V-One SIII, Capricorn LAB-01 Number of cars presently owned: 8 (“Do you want to buy some?”) Best achievement in RC: Winning 2008 Pull Start Nationals at Brendale (QLD) Occupation: Plastic Welder First RC car: Tamiya TGX Favourite RC car: Kyosho V-One SIII Only thing better than RC: Being a Father Favourite food: Pepper Steak & Chips Favourite drink: Jim Beam Dream car: Ferrari ENZO Favourite TV show: Formula 1 Favourite thing: Beating Chris Stanley & Steve Valletta THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 19 August 2011 DRIVER PROFILE The second driver we have chosen to feature this edition is another familiar face at PDNR. Name: Nathan Johnston Nickname: Mash, Gravy, Classes: Drag Racing and Open Pan Brands: Everything! Achievements: Winning 2010 Doorslammer Championship History: Nathan has been racing at PDNR since 2005 where he started in the drag racing side of things. His debut Tuesday night race wasn’t until 2006, but it has only been more recently that we have seen Nathan back driving more regularly on a Tuesday night. For many years he was chief mechanic and pit man for Charles Pilotto (and several other drivers) and during this time Nathan covered more distance than any other mechanic in the history of PDNR. Nathan always displays maximum enthusiasm, commitment and determination and anyone who has seen him pit or marshal will agree. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #14 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 20 August 2011 Nathan has quite a fleet of vehicles as we found out when we asked him a few questions. This event is promoted by Racing Lines Magazine PDNR has hosted this event since 2008. A top quality field were in attendance for 2011 with the smaller number of entrants putting on an above average display of great racing. PDNR thanks all drivers and their friends and families who attended this year for their support of the event. The same format as previous years was used, with the event catering solely for Nitro (GP) divisions. Nitro Sport, Pull Start, Open Tourer and 1/8 Scale were offered, but Nitro Kit did not receive any entries. The 2011 Winter Champs was again blessed with perfect weather, drivers would have been forgiven for thinking it was not a winter’s day! The track records were broken in most divisions, and PDNR's temporary car park circuit was graced with many drivers visiting from NSWRCRCC and SORMCC clubs. Following on from the momentum of the Racing Lines GP On Road Winter Championships which PDNR hosted in June, the PDNR Challenge was fairly well attended thanks to a last minute flurry from drivers to enter the event. There were again many drivers visiting from other clubs which kept the PDNR locals more than honest, but what was great to see was the number of regular PDNR racers making their debut at a major RC event. There were five divisions offered: Open Pan, Open Tourer, Pull Start, Nitro Kit and for the first time Buggy was added to the schedule.
