WELCOME Welcome Members and Guests to the Penrith District Nitro Racing Incorporated 10 Year Anniversary race meet. This event provides your club with the opportunity to demonstrate and celebrate what our great hobby has to offer and how far PDNR has come in 10 short years. From a small group of RC enthusiasts gathering for some social racing at Harvey Norman, to producing one of the world’s top drivers in Phil Woodbury. From counting straws to record the number of laps and a couple of small leaky trailers, to a state of the art computerised timing system and a to truck that struggles to hold all of our equipment . From milk crates that double as drivers stands to a massive dual axle trailer with wheel chair access. From simple and brittle single speed cars to two speed open pan cars that reach in excess of 100kph and drag cars that just simply launch off the line. These are all things that a lot of us just take for granted now, but they are really physical reminders of just how far PDNR has come. Since becoming incorporated in 2002 every committee has worked so hard to advance PDNR and none more so then the current committee. The countless voluntary hours put into the club over the past 10 years is something that money just can’t buy and is truly admired and respected by many other clubs and a true indication of just how strong PDNR is. We are now one of the biggest clubs in Australia with one of the best atmospheres and club spirit that anyone could hope for, and being President of such a great club is nothing but a pleasure. I welcome you and your families to enjoy the festivities of the day and the company of both past and present members and racers. PDNR also hold a number or major events during the year such as the Racing Lines GP On-Road Winter Champs, PDNR Challenge and 2.4 Hour Le Mans. The early foundation days of PDNR can be traced back to Penrith Railway Station car park (North side) where small groups of RC cars could be seen on Sunday mornings. With upgrades for the 2000 Olympic Games being undertaken the Railway Station car park was no longer suitable, and a move to the Harvey Norman / Bunnings car park was made - although it was still named BBC Hardwarehouse at this time. With this move was the switch to Tuesday nights, which although not realised at the time, would become key to PDNR’s future growth and success. From 2000 PDNR’s growth was steady with more and more drivers allocating their Tuesday nights to their nitro RC cars. In 2001 there were enough regular drivers to start a championship. The first ever organised championship at PDNR was held over 12 weeks from April 10 to June 26. The 2001 Autumn Championship crowned PDNR’s first ever winners with around 20 drivers competing across three divisions on offer. The divisions on offer in 2001 were: Single Speed/Novice, Two Speed, and Two Speed Pro. PDNR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Souvenir Program Page 8 April 29 2012 Here is a summary of the division specifications in force at the time: SINGLE SPEED/NOVICE • Single speed up to size 12. • Novice driver (open). • Beginners - if setup is a two speed car, a limit of three weeks only in this class is only allowed. • All points will carry over when moving to a new class after this time. TWO SPEED • Two speed cars. TWO SPEED PRO • Two speed cars with performance motors. With support for PDNR’s Tuesday night activities continuing to grow, the decision was made to register PDNR as an official club. PDNR were officially Incorporated on March 26, 2002 and continued to grow from strength to strength. Now with incorporation, PDNR became affiliated with AARCMCC and ROORDA and in Easter of 2002 PDNR had their very first representatives at an AARCMCC sanctioned event – the 2002 NSW State Championships (held at Moorebank by NSWRCRCC). PDNR has three representatives at this event: Tony Firth, David Wowk and Eddy Skaf. During these early championships, lap counting and race timing was done manually – with pen and paper. Coloured flags were clipped to the cars and a scorer and spotter calling out the colours as the cars raced past. PDNR moved to computer timing in 2003 manually using Slyfox (without transponders) to manage race times and count laps – but it was still a two person job with a spotter and operator needed. PDNR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Souvenir Program Page 9 April 29 2012 Another significant upgrade in PDNR’s history came in September 2003 when PDNR moved to a fully computerised race timing system with transponders. This upgrade enabled PDNR to improve the standards of race control, and this in turn attracted more drivers to participate in PDNR’s events. PDNR quickly built a reputation for having a strong club spirit and camaraderie thanks to the efforts of members who made new drivers welcome and always leant a hand to new or less experienced racers. PDNR members also travelled away from home to support nearly every major nitro RC event. With the experience gained from travelling to new tracks and competing against other drivers, the standards of competition at PDNR improved, and this aided in improving the standards of PDNR across the board. By the end of 2003 PDNR had reached capacity at the Harvey Norman car park, and the search for a larger and more accommodating venue began. In May 2004 PDNR made another significant upgrade and relocated to the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC). With the new location came an increase in the available race time, and PDNR continued to grow, reaching up to 100 entrants per night at it’s peak. Along the way PDNR had made many improvements to track components, and the trailers used to transport all the equipment were also upgraded as needed. PDNR’s next significant upgrade was in October 2004 with a brand new Dexion pallet racking drivers stand replacing the drivers steps that had been in use since 2002. This gave drivers a much better and more elevated view of the track. Between 2003 and 2006 PDNR inaugurated a number of special and major events like the Oran Park Charity Challenge, RC Bathurst 1000, 2.4 Hour Le Mans, 3 Hour Classic and PDNR Challenge. And in 2008 PDNR were privileged to host the Racing Lines GP On-Road Winter Championships. Most of these events are still held annually by PDNR. PDNR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Souvenir Program Page 10 April 29 2012 In 2006 club rivalry was building and PDNR were behind the launch of the Nitro Interclub Series (NIS) for GP On Road. The NIS series ran for four years and encouraged members from different clubs in NSW to travel away from their home track and compete against other drivers and clubs. Unfortunately over the years some clubs dropped out due to the decline in all RC racing, and at the close of the series PDNR remained undefeated, dominantly winning every series. 2006 was a special year for RC in Australia with the IFMAR 200mm IC On-Road World Championships being held in Brendale, Queensland. Many PDNR members competed at many State and National Championships in the two years leading up to this event to help qualify for the World Championships. PDNR and Australia were well represented at the World Championships, and the two week event remains the highlight for many PDNR members that attended. Another page in PDNR’s history was written on November 11, 2008 with the official launch of the new drivers stand trailer. Custom designed and built by a team of PDNR members, the driver stand trailer included a ramp – enabling PDNR’s two wheel chair drivers’ access to the ideal driving position. Still in 2012, PDNR continue to race on a weekly basis in the P1 Island car park on a temporary track at the Sydney International Regatta Centre (Old Castlereagh Road, Penrith, NSW, Australia). The challenge that still remains is to get a permanent facility in Penrith for racing RC cars. Some of these results carry much significance, and below is highlight of some of the top achievements of PDNR representatives. In addition to the featured results below, many PDNR drivers have achieved top 10 and A Final results at many major events across Australia. The achievements and experiences of PDNR’s top racers has help raise the standards at club race meetings, with PDNR now one of the most recognised and respected on-road radio control car clubs in Australia. 2002 AARCMCC NSW State Titles PDNR had their first representatives at an AARCMCC sanctioned event. 2003 ROORDA On road NSW State Titles – Kambah (ACT) (This was the first major win for PDNR representatives) 1st - Scott Lee came 2nd - Steve O’Connor 3rd - Andrew Splitty Miller 2004 Kyosho Cup PDNR had 4 teams competing 2006 AARCMCC NSW State Titles 1st - Kevin Maton (Division: Pull Start) (This was PDNR’s first AARCMCC State Champion) 2007 AARCMCC NSW State Titles 1st – Joe Patane (Division: Pull Start) 2008 AARCMCC National Championships 1st – Shaun Kaltenbacher (Division: Pull Start) 2008 AARCMCC NSW State Titles 1st – Jonathan Freund (Division: Pull Start) 2009 AARCMCC National Championships 1st – Shaun Kaltenbacher (Division: Pull Start) 2009 AARCMCC NSW State Titles 1st – Brett Quarm (Division: Pull Start) 2010 IFMAR 200mm IC World Championships PDNR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Souvenir Program Page 13 April 29 2012 6th - Phil Woodbury (Best ever result by an Australian at IFMAR World event outside Australia) 2010 AARCMCC NSW State Titles 1st - Phil Woodbury (Division: Pro Tourer) 4th - Tony Firth (Division: Pro Tourer) 1st - Nathan Ryan (Division: Pull Start) 2011 AARCMCC National Championships 1st - Joe Patane (Division: Pull Start) 2012 AARCMCC NSW State Titles 1st - Joe Patane (Division: Pull Start) DRAG RACING ACHIEVEMENTS: 2011 National Championships - QLD Brandon Dimoski – National Record Holder - Top Fuel EP Frank Naylor – Runner Up – Nitro Doorslammer 2012 VIC State Championships Zac Ztojanovski – State Champion – Top Fuel GP Robert Dimoski – World Top 6 Extreme EP (1.2sec) PDNR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Souvenir Program Page 14 April 29 2012 PDNR TIMELINE 1997 - Start meeting at Penrith Railway Station car park February 2000 - Move to Harvey Norman Car Park April 10, 2001 - First Championship June 2001 - First PDNR Newsletter Sunday July 29, 2001 - First Display Day – Autobarn Penrith (Jamison Park) March 2002 - PDNR register as Incorporated Association May 19 2002 - Display Day – Wild One’s Car Show 2002 - PDNR’s first representation at NSW State Championships September 2003 - First Championship with computer / transponders timing December 16, 2003 - First Drag Night May 2004 - Move to Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC) October 2004 - Dexion Drivers Stand October 2004 - First RC Bathurst 1000 August 2006 - PDNR Introduce Nitro Interclub Series (NIS) 2007 - Start of PDNR Club Champion November 11 2008 - Drivers Stand Trailer January 2011 - New RC America Drag Racing Timing Equipment April 2012 – Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary PDNR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Souvenir Program Page 15 April 29 2012 THE DUNNY DERBY A major highlight of the Charity Challenge events that PDNR held as part of the Oran Park Kids Race Day were the Demolition Dunny Derby. It has been a few years since PDNR held their last Dunny Derby and it’s only fitting that they return to the track at the PDNR 10 Year Anniversary. During the Dunny Derby the race track becomes a cauldron as the drivers do battle, trying to destroy their opponent’s balsa wood dunny. The winner is the last dunny standing. Special thanks to the Albronda and Seymo families for making the balsa dunnies used at the 10 Year Anniversary. PDNR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Souvenir Program Page 16 April 29 2012 WHAT ARE THEY RACING All cars entered in the PDNR 10 Year Anniversary are known as scale Radio Control cars. Most are what we call “Nitro Powered” featuring an Internal Combustion (IC) Glow Engine. The cars that don’t make much noise are called “EP” or battery powered. To accommodate cars of different configurations and performance, there are a variety of classes or divisions for RC racing. Here are some examples: Open Tourer Pull Start Open Pan Off Road Top Fuel This is for 200mm Touring Cars using a maximum 2.11cc performance motors or maximum 2.5cc kit motors. This is for 200mm Touring Cars using up to 2.5cc motors with a pull start. This is for 1/8 scale and 1/10 scale pan cars. These typically use up to 3.5cc open motor, and are often referred to as the Formula 1 of Nitro RC. This is for Off Road trucks and buggies, most of which would be 1/8 scale with 3.5cc to 5.0cc engines. This is for scale Top Fuel Dragsters Manufacturers of RC cars will not be familiar household names. Capricorn, Kyosho, Mugen, XRAY, GV, HPI Tamiya and Colt are some of the more well known brands of RC cars. For the enthusiast some of the cars are available in kit form, but the majority now come Ready-to-Run or RTR having been assembled in the factory. There are many after market upgrades and hop ups available, just like regular full sized cars. Radio equipment is either supplied with most pre-built cars, or purchased separately, with brands such as Specktrum, Sanwa, Futaba, Hitec, JR and Ko Propo common. The radio equipment consists of several components – a transmitter that the driver uses, a receiver and battery pack in the car, and two servos that are used to control the throttle, brake and steering. PDNR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Souvenir Program Page 17 April 29 2012 UNDER THE BODY All cars have a clear polycarbonate body that is painted on the inside. Body shape can vary widely from scaled down supercars such as Ferrari and Lamborghini to Lolas and even the mighty mini. When it comes to what is under the body, the items are very similar, just the placement varies between manufacturers. Materials used in the cars construction vary from aluminium alloys and moulded plastic components through to titanium, carbon fibre and carbon composites. Chassis Wheels Engine Exhaust Fuel Tank Driver Transmission Holds everything together. Usually aluminium alloy and between 3mm and 4mm thick. The chassis is strengthened by a separate top deck. One on each corner. Front are between 24mm and 26mm wide. Rear are between 24mm and 30mm wide. Can either be rubber compound or solid foam, with different hardness’ available. Single cylinder, two stroke with glow plug. Capacity measured in cubic inches. .12 is 2.1cc. It is not uncommon for high performance engines to reach 40,000 rpm. Engines may be either started with a starter box, or if fitted, a pull starter. Many cars use a ‘tuned’ pipe to maximise engine performance. You may notice a small pipe joining the exhaust to the fuel tank. This is positively pressurise the fuel system. The fuel tank contains 75mL of fuel. This is enough for between 5 and 8 minutes racing. Doesn’t sit in the car. The car is controlled via a radio control using two servos, one for steering and the other for throttle and braking. One or two speed automatic gearbox. All cars utilize a 4WD system for maximum performance. Power transmission may be via a belt drive or shaft drove system.
