Unlike many other Restaurant Weeks, participating Riverside restaurants do not have to commit to a three course lunch or dinner menu at certain price points and it is completely free for restaurants to participate. From Friday, June 19th to Sunday, June 28th, diners can enjoy either a special menu item or a combination of items at a special price. Diners can find out what restaurants are offering during Riverside Restaurant Week at DineRiverside. com. This will also be the portal for restaurants to sign up to participate. The City of Riverside is coordinating the promotion with its sponsors, the Arlington Business Partnership, the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce, Riverside Downtown Partnership and KOLA 99.9FM, which have put in over $45,000 in advertising. The City, ABP, the Chamber, RDP and KOLA will also be promoting Riverside Restaurant Week specials on their websites, Facebook, and other social media channels. Join in the conversation with #DineRiverside. It is expected that approximately 100 restaurants will participate city-wide with 25 of those in downtown and 10 in the Arlington Village area. Downtown restaurants that participated in the 2014 Riverside Restaurant Week and plan to do so again include the four restaurants in the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa, as well as ProAbition and Mezcal Cantina y Cocina, and Pixels Bar and Eatery. The Cave is a 400-seat concert venue, located in the heart of Big Bear Village in the San Bernardino Mountains. Established in 2013, The Cave has hosted musical acts that included: Colt Ford, Berlin, Marshall Tucker Band, Bill Medley, and Iration. The Cave books nostalgic entertainers of the 20th century and some of today’s most up-and-coming rock, pop, and country performers. Comedy shows and other live entertainment are all part of the lineup at The Cave, which features a full bar and state-of-the-art audio and visuals. Shows are for all ages, unless otherwise indicated. The Cave is located at 40789 Village Dr. in Big Bear Lake. For more information, go online to www.thecavebigbear.com. The Tubes Hollywood U2 Desperado June 13 June 27 As the longest-running Michael Jackson tribute band, and the only one to predate his untimely passing, Who’s Bad has continued to impress fans — all over the world and of all ages — for the last 10 years. Who’s Bad’s live performance is an unrivaled celebration of pop music’s one true King. Their power-packed performance of Michael Jackson’s expansive catalog has ignited crowds on every continent and can only be described as a jaw-dropping, musical must-see. 12 The Tubes is a San Franciscobased rock band whose 1975 debut album included the hit single “White Punks on Dope.” They’re best known, perhaps, for their 1983 single “She’s a Beauty,” a top 10 U.S. hit with a frequentlyplayed music video in the early days of MTV; and in the 1980 film Xanadu singing the rock portion of the crossgenre song “Dancin’” opposite a big band. June 20 Desperado, The Premier Eagles Tribute, presents a powerful and entertaining group of musicians and promises to be the finest “Eagles experience” to be had, outside of an actual Eagles concert. With their exciting stage and visual presence, “world class” guitar work, rock solid rhythm section, and dynamic vocal work, Desperado satisfies their audiences with a “Big Stage” quality experience. Hollywood U2 are not simply U2 impersonators who have an uncanny resemblance, but consummate musicians who bring the true heart of U2 to every performance. Hollywood U2 shows bring the respect that U2, their music, and their fans deserve through the precision, excitement, and exact emulation of a U2 concert. Who’s Bad June 6 Zeppelin USA July 3 Zeppelin USA is all about the music and spirit of Led Zeppelin. When the members of ZUSA formed, a clear decision had to be made. Zeppelin USA set themselves apart from other Led Zeppelin tribute bands to stand on the music only. They focus on getting the right tones, vocal inflections, and mix out front, borrowing a little from the studio versions here, the live versions there...much attention is spent on delivering a true sonic Zep experience. June, 2015 Inland Entertainment Review BIG BEAR IN THE SUMMER Big Bear Alpine Zoo Offers A Fun, Family Summer Escape EVERY DAY AT NOON THERE IS AN ANIMAL PRESENTATION Photographers of all ages and abilities are invited to enter the annual Photography Contest. Exhibits include a family of Grizzly Bears (who had been scheduled to be euthanized due to bad behavior in the Northern US), 2 beautiful snow leopards, 11 timber wolves, a 3-legged black bear, mountain lions, bobcats, foxes, raccoons, bald eagles, various owls, and many more fascinating species of wild life. No matter where you are in the Inland Empire, it is worth the short drive up to Big Bear Lake to visit the Big Bear Alpine Zoo and enjoy the beautiful weather, blue skies and fresh air. Did you know that one of the most unique zoos in this country is almost right in your backyard? The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is one of only two alpine zoos in the United States. It is also one of the few zoos that is also a rescue and rehabilitation facility, providing care, shelter and hopefully a safe return back to the wild for animals who are injured, orphaned, or displaced. Their dedication to this service results in an 80-90% success rate in reintroducing rehabilitation animals back into the wild. The animals on exhibit at the zoo are either too injured or have been imprinted by humans and cannot be released back into the wild to care for themselves. 43285 Goldmine Dr., Big Bear Lake, CA 92315 When you visit the Big Bear 909-584-1299 • www.bigbearalpinezoo.org Alpine Zoo, you will see a wide Summer Hours: Open Daily 10 AM – 5 PM (ending in September) Motocross « Monster Trucks Human Cannonball « Fireworks JULY 4th AT FAIRPLEX • Get tickets early – sells out every year • Tickets start at $16 • Buffet dinner available, includes reserved seats • Entertainment begins at 8 p.m.; fireworks at 9:15 p.m. BUY YOUR TICKETS ONLINE NOW FAIRPLEX.COM/KABOOM Photo by Stephen Freeland. Great food, wine, mimosas, crepes, delicious pastries, music, dance -- and, of course, the infamous Poodles & Pals Parade! The Santa Barbara French Festival is a community event not to be missed. It’s a Dance Festival, a Music Festival, an Arts & Crafts Festival and, of course, a Food Festival. It is also a great way to support Center Stage Theater and Speaking of Stories, two wonderful Santa Barbara arts organizations. For two days Santa Barbara celebrates its nickname, “the American Riviera,” as the French influences take over Oak Park. Each day the fun starts at 11am when the entertainment kicks off on three different stages and continues non-stop until 7pm. The stages will be filled with dance and music from more than 30 different acts including performances, audience participation and instruction. Can-can, French Polynesian dancers, African Bellydancing, the Burlesque, Tango and, of course, the Femme Fatales Drag Revue! And every minute of entertainment is all free! The Accordion International Music Society of Santa Barbara will coordinate a third stage dedicated to exclusively accordion performances. The entertainment is only part of what the French Festival has to offer -- more than 60 booths will be offering everything from crepes and delicious French pastries to face painting and French tablecloths. You can grab a mimosa, as you peruse some beautiful paintings and photography. Enjoy a crepe while shopping for your French Festival t-shirt and beret. Take a moment for a quick massage before you settle in for the next performance with a sinfully delicious croissant and French beer. Visit the Santa Barbara Travel Bureau booth to sample some of the great offers on boutique adventures and excursions. All in the beautiful setting of Santa Barbara’s Oak Park. Center Stage Theatre and Speaking of Stories are pleased to present this great community event, which serves as a joint fundraiser for the two organizations. Sponsors for the event include Santa Barbara Travel, Kronenbourg 1664, Perrier, XL Airways France, The Santa Barbara Independent, HiddenProvence.com, Tent Merchants, and French Bulldog Rescue. For complete details on the performers, food, crafts, shopping and activities visit FrenchFestival.com. Tickets are on sale now. For more than twenty years, Bill Maher has set the boundaries of where funny, political talk can go on American television. First on Politically Incorrect (Comedy Central, ABC, 1993-2002), and for the last thirteen years on HBO’s Real Time, Maher’s combination of unflinching honesty and big laughs have garnered him 34 Emmy nominations. Maher won his first Emmy in 2014 as executive producer for the HBO series VICE. In October of 2008, this same combination was on display in Maher’s uproarious and unprecedented swipe at organized religion, Religulous, directed by Larry Charles (Borat). The documentary has gone on to become the 8th Highest Grossing Documentary ever. In addition to his television program – which has featured such regular visitors as Howard Dean, Ben Affleck, Robin Williams, Arianna Huffington, Cory Booker and Michael Moore – Maher has written five bestsellers: True Story, Does Anybody Have a Problem with That? Directed by theatre arts professor Kathryn Ervin, Once on This Island is the musical love story of two island people brought together and torn apart by fortune and destiny. Ti Moune (Jamie Jacob), a peasant girl, rescues and falls in love with Daniel (Brandon Marquez), a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. When she returns Daniel to his family, the gods who rule the island lead Ti Moune on a journey that tests the power of her love against the forces of hatred, prejudice and death. This brilliant musical from the Tony Awardwinning team of Ahrens and Flaherty is filled with almost non-stop Caribbean-infused song and dance, with exquisite costumes and puppetry sure to delight the entire family. Additionally, throughout the run of the play, there will be a silent auction held in the theatre lobby for the original painting used on all of the publicity material. This one-of-akind, acrylic on canvas painting by theatre arts staff member Scott Kruger, features portraits of the two leads, as well as Papa Ge, one of the key antagonists. All proceeds for the painting will go directly into Harlan Jeglin Scene Shop fund. Once on This Island opens Friday, June 5, and runs for nine performances, closing on Sunday, June 14. LagunaFestivalofArts.org R iverside Community Players completes its 90th season with the heavenly inspired musical Nunsense written and composed by Dan Goggin. Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium. Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Directed by Zoe Bright, Nunsense runs from July 10th – July 26th. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. There are two additional shows on Thursday, July 16th at 8pm and Saturday, July 25th at 2pm. For ticket and reservation information call the box office at (951) 686-4030. IER Theater & Arts Exciting Music Event, Featuring Mark Lowry And The Martins, Comes To Calvary Church June 20 In Santa Ana I t’s been talked about for years and is now finally coming to pass. Gospel music legends Mark Lowry and The Martins are on the road together. This long awaited concert event will come to Santa Ana’s Calvary Church, on Saturday, June 20 at 6pm. “It’s a lifelong dream,” says Mark about touring with The Martins. “It’s going to be an exciting year. We have a great time touring together. I love just getting to hear The Martins sing every night. I’m their biggest fan!” The history between Mark and sibling trio Joyce, Jonathan and Judy Martin spans more than two decades and can be traced back to a cassette tape The Martins gave him at a national convention in 1992. And it’s on everyone’s mind at the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, the world-famous celebration of art in “living pictures” – tableaux vivants – where the theme chosen for this summer’s production is The Pursuit of Happiness. This one-of-a-kind theatrical event, which also features live narration and original music performed by the Pageant’s orchestra, takes place in the beautiful Irvine Bowl on the grounds of Laguna’s Festival of Arts. With its July opening fast approaching, Pageant director Diane Challis Davy is putting the finishing touches on what she believes will be an inspiring and family-friendly show. In this, her 20th Pageant as director, Challis Davy readily acknowledged her theme selections seem to have a surprising knack for topical resonance. This summer’s Pageant, with its blend of art and theatre, will offer its own perspectives. “It’s going to be fun, entertaining and educational,” Challis Davy explained. “Past and present sources of happiness will be considered, and we’ll present themes and memes that everyone can relate to.” “The desire for happiness,” she contin- ABOUT THE PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS Presented by the Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach The Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Audiences are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (“living pictures”), incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. 22 ued, “is integral to being human. Today we share the same basic wants and face the same struggles as our distant ancestors. The need to be ‘happy’ is a trait that unites us across all nationalities, races and religions.” Challis Davy added, “We are living a fast-paced existence in the digital age. Maybe this is a good time to slow down and consider the ways in which art reflects the quest for happiness in different eras and different cultures. I think we will find we have more in common with previous generations than we thought.” Challis Davy hopes The Pursuit of Happiness will provide plenty of opportunities for beauty and theatrical excitement. It will also have an international feel thanks to the inclusion of artworks from other cultures. Tributes to the wonders of childhood and the universal appeal of dance will be complemented by stories of love, family and history. Working closely with Challis Davy, longtime Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling was also excited about the theme, especially at the Pageant where volunteer enthusiasm is integral to the creative process. Duling noted, “We had over 1,200 potential volunteers show up for this past January’s ‘casting call’ to vie for a chance to be part of the fun both onstage and backstage. Community, friendship, family, and devotion to a greater cause: I’ve learned a lot about the sources of happiness right here.” Director Challis Davy and her staff realize all too well that their 82-year-old production wouldn’t be possible without their amazing and loyal volunteers, many of whom travel from all over the Southland and return year after year to take part. Backstage at the Pageant is truly June, 2015 Inland Entertainment Review unique: camaraderie, a perpetually festive atmosphere, and a commitment to professionalism in every department, result in a show that has been eliciting gasps of wonder and delight from audiences for decades. When asked about what happiness means to her, director Challis Davy responded, “Being creative and making artful entertainment.” After a moment, she added, “Good health and the absence of worries wouldn’t be bad either!” Finally, she summed up her ambitions. “We hope ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’ will be beautiful and entertaining, and encourage our audiences to think about the importance of both joy and art in their lives.” IER MORE INFORMATION DATES & TIMES July 8 – August 31, 2015 Performances Nightly at 8:30pm TICKET INFORMATION Advance Tickets $15 - $230 A Pageant Ticket also acts a season pass to the Festival of Arts Fine Art Show SPONSORS The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters are sponsored in part by Fidelity Investments, KOST Radio 103.5, the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, and Orange County Register. Movies on Main was listed as Number 10 on the Press-Enterprise’s “12 Things to do with your Family” for the summer of 2014. SCHEDULED MOVIES THIS SUMMER INCLUDE: July 9 – The Box Trolls Subterranean trolls raise an orphaned infant named Eggs who helps them fight back against an evil exterminator and make peace with the fearful residents of an upper-crust Victorian-era town known for its world-class cheeses. The two things the people of this posh town treasure most are their children and their cheeses; unfortunately, those are also the things that the Boxtrolls - a race of unsightly, sewer- dwelling creatures - covet most. Eggs may be the Boxtrolls’ only hope for survival when scheming exterminator Archibald Snatcher seeks to earn his entry into the ultra-exclusive Cheesebridge society by eradicating the Boxtrolls once and for all. July 16 – The Lego Movie A lowly Lego figure joins a group intent on battling an evil force after a case of mistaken identity in this computer-generated comedy from the filmmakers behind Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and the director of Robot Chicken.
