lovely Arizona Muse. Well done, Vogue, for
a wonderful cover story.

It was eye-opening to read about the Oatley
dynasty in Jane Albert’s “Made in Australia”
article in the December issue. I knew next to
nothing about the family before reading this
but am thoroughly impressed with this
feelgood Australian story. Mr Bob Oatley
must be so proud of his empire, with
fingers in many an entrepreneurial pie
(winemaking, sailing, resorts) and well
he should be. Let’s hope his family
continues his success in the future.

I adored reading Alice Birrell’s guide
to finding the perfect dress for different
occasions (“Perfect fit” in the December
issue). I’ve torn the guide out and filed it
away for my go-to reference on what to
wear to work events, cocktail parties and
New Year’s Eve celebrations.
CARA WOODS
VIA EMAIL
I was struck with pure admiration for the
foster parents in Jane Albert’s inspirational
piece “Handle with care” in the December
issue. I must admit I really didn’t know
much about what foster parents did until
I read their story. We should all be thankful
there are selfless people like these caring for
the many children who are put into foster
care each year in Australia.
LETTER OF
THE MONTH
I work in the oncology unit of a busy
city hospital. Recently the spotlight
has been cast upon the mental health
of doctors after a Beyond Blue survey
revealed high rates of depression and
burnout. It’s essential to find ways to relax
and rejuvenate. The arrival of Vogue on
my doorstop once a month heralds a night
of escapism and inspiration. Thank you
for my monthly dose of fashion, style
and substance – it’s medicinal!

NATHANIEL GOLDBERG
In this age of quick-and-breezy emails, texts
and tweets, it was refreshing to read Natasha
Inchley’s back-to-basics “Party primer” tips in
the December issue, which covered the correct
etiquette for replying to invitations, what to
wear to a dinner party or a black-tie event and
how to be well groomed. I would love to read
more “how-to” Vogue articles. Bring them on.

PUMICE
To smooth callused feet, Moom Volcanic
Beauty Pumice Stone, $10 (4), makes a
natural sole slougher – it dries quickly and
doesn’t deteriorate in the same way that pedi
paddles sometimes do. For a head-to-toe
refresh, try Aesop Geranium Leaf Body
Scrub, $37 (3), which contains pumice along
with bamboo stem and geranium leaf.
AFRICAN BIRCH
▲
The bark and leaves of the African
birch tree (Anogeissus leiocarpa) were
traditionally used in African cultures to
heal wounds. An extract from the tree is
the basis of the Origins Plantscription
range – we like the Anti-Aging Cleanser,
$39 (5), to dissolve make-up and slough
dead skin cells.

along with calming botanical extracts.
VANILLA
86 – JANUARY 2014
HONEY
Healing, gooey and utterly indulgent,
honey and bee products have so many uses
in skincare. Greek brand Apivita’s Natural
Serum Lifting, $50 (11), is formulated
with royal jelly and wheatgerm oil to tackle
fine lines and sagging skin. Propolis, a
resin collected by bees, forms the basis of
the delectably scented, super-hydrating yet
non-greasy Panier des Sens Honey &
Propolis Hand Cream, $17 (12).
ARGAN OIL
APRICOT KERNEL OIL
Another potent antioxidant, apricot kernel
oil has oleic and linoleic acids to help
plump cells and protect against moisture
loss. Californian range Marie Veronique
Organics’s Pacific Body Oil, $99 (13),
utilises the wonder oil in a skin-slathering
sensation – perfect after a bath or swim.
ROSE
Roses have been used for centuries in
skincare, thanks to their nourishing
qualities. Dior Prestige’s dream cream La
Crème Souveraine, $410 (14), contains
extracts from two prized rose varieties:
rose de Granville and rose Souveraine. The
result is a luxurious salve contained in a
covetable jewel-like jar.

Normally reserved for cooler months,
vanilla can be tweaked for warm weather
play with the addition of tropical treats like
coconut and fruit. Described as a “healthy”
fragrance, LaVanila Laboratories Vanilla
Summer, 50ml for $90 (10), contains
skin-soothing botanicals and essential oils.
It is, at first whiff, all suntan lotion and
tropical cocktails. It rounds out with
notes of coconut and mouth-watering
Madagascan vanilla.

Make-up and hot weather do not mix well.
In the steamy summer months, eschew
foundation in favour of mineral make-up.
Not only does it absorb oil and give skin an
airbrushed radiance, it also contains finely
milled titanium dioxide and zinc oxide,
which are natural sunblocks. Try Priori
Coffeeberry Natureceuticals Natural
Perfecting Minerals Foundation SPF15+,
$70 (8), or warm up the complexion with
Issada Mineral Baked Bronzer, which
comes in a limited-edition Beach Babe
Summer Bronzing Pack, $125 (9), along
with a brush and clutch.
Traditionally used by Moroccan women to
tame unruly hair, argan oil is a summer
hair essential. Packed full of natural
moisturisers and vitamin E, it helps
treat hair damaged by sun, sea and salt.
Keune Paris So Pure Natural Balance
Moisturizing Shampoo and Moisturizing
Conditioner, $25 each (15), are jam-packed
with argan and other tress-quenching oils.
DESERT LIME
A small thorny tree that grows in dry
regions of Australia, the desert lime is
a powerful antioxidant. Quench your
complexion with a spritz of lightly scented
Grown Alchemist Hydra-Mist + Desert
Lime & Amino-Peptide, $30 (16). Keep
the mist in the fridge for added zing.
88 – JANUARY 2014
MARINE ALGAE
Marine algae is lauded as a skincare hero as
it’s high in the minerals said to help flush
toxins from the body. Saison Swedish
Dream Seaweed Soap, $14 (17), contains
sea lily and vitamin-loaded kelp along with
algae, all in a luxuriously lathering bar.
LEMON MYRTLE
Mosquitoes hate the scent of citrus, so
slather on Alila Living Insect Repellant, $6
(18), infused with lemon myrtle, lavender
and rose geranium essential oils. Just make
sure to keep it handy – natural insect
repellants need to be reapplied every hour to
maintain their effectiveness.
CALENDULA
Perfect for sensitised skins or unexplained
OLIVE
A long-time skin secret of Mediterranean
cultures, olive oil is super-hydrating but
can feel heavy and greasy when used
straight from the bottle. A featherlight gel,
Botáni Rescue Eye Treatment, $50 (20),
contains olive squalene, which hydrates the
skin to soften the appearance of fine lines
and wrinkles.
KONJAC
Made from the fibres of a root vegetable
native to Asia, konjac sponges soften to
a jelly-like texture and are biodegradable.
Perfect for oily or acne-prone skin,
Appelles Apothecary Bamboo Charcoal
Konjac Sponge, $16 (21), contains charcoal
to help absorb excess oil and dirt and
■
eliminate bacteria.
