SPOTLIGHT
pretty women
Two traits characterise the new generation of beauty superstars:
their Indian ancestry and a passion to make the world a more
beautiful place—inside out. By PARIZAAD KHAN SETHI
Dr Nigma Talib has the unique distinction
of having asked every Oscar nominee
this year if they’ve pooped. The Londonbased naturopathic doctor poses the
question in the first line of her book
Younger Skin Starts In The Gut (titled
Reverse The Signs Of Ageing in the UK),
which was included in the 2016 Oscar
swag bag. Her guide to decoding the
warning signals our gut is sending us is
already a hot favourite with her patients
Penelope Cruz and Kate Bosworth.
Unlike a garden-variety naturopath,
naturopathic doctors have premedical
degrees and hundreds of hours of
clinical training, equipping them to

diagnose and treat the root cause
of disease. And as research is
increasingly showing us, many
diseases can be traced back to
one source: a sub-optimally
functioning gut. Talib considers

nutrition to identify and annihilate the
cause, not the symptoms. Talib’s approach
does take commitment: she suggests
eliminating gluten, alcohol, dairy and
sugar from the diet, all major contributors
to inflammation. Stick it out long enough
and you’ll find that your skin will improve
along with your health. “Patients found
eczema, acne or pigmentation was
disappearing and their skin was getting
younger,” says Talib.
Philosophy: “We are all unique and we
must recognise everyone has different
needs. Listen to your body.”
Expert chat: “Even if you’re eating a
healthy, varied diet, our soil doesn’t have
enough vitamins and minerals anymore.
Everyone needs supplements based on
their specific needs and to make up for
deficiencies, of which Vitamin D, iron, B12
and folate are the most common. Get
tested to find out what you’re deficient in.”

NADIA
NARAIN
YOGA TEACHER AND GURU
When Narain was 18 she accompanied
a friend to a yoga class in Los Angeles.
That first brush with surya namaskars
changed her path and life: “I felt like I had
come home.” It’s now been 20 years since
she started spreading her brand of yoga
and the momentum shows no signs of
slowing down. Narain lives and teaches at
Triyoga in the UK, but her at-home DVDs
(Everyday Yoga For Stress Release,
Yoga For Pregnancy And
Strength And Stability),
aromatherapy candles
and activewear can bring
home her approachable
style and expertise to
yoga geeks.

Philosophy: “I feel good when I take care
of myself. But I also think it is important
to live a middle path and not be obsessed
with anything even if it’s healthy, because
this causes more stress.”
Expert chat: “Yoga works on so many
levels—spiritual, mental, emotional
and physical. You may come in
with a bad back, then you learn to
breathe, which helps relax you.
It’s about finding your alignment,
physically, mentally and morally,
and not about touching
your toes or standing on
your head.”
