On an absolutely perfect day for baseball, the Iron Pigs split their season opener. Game 1 began with a BANG as lead-off hitter HJ Whapeles blasted a double to the fence. The Pigs went up quickly 1-0. Solid pitching by Randy Olson backed by a solid defense held the Nationals scoreless for the first 3 innings while the Pigs built a 3-0 lead. A rough 4th and 5th inning saw the Pigs slip behind 3-4, but they bounced back in the 6th to tie it up 4-4. Unable to bring the magic in the 7th, the Pigs lost a heartbreaker as the Nationals brought a run across the plate in the bottom of the 7th. The Pigs succumbed 4-5 to the Nationals. Winning Pitcher: Tom Sorci - Nationals Losing Pitcher: Steve Martone - Iron Pigs Highlights: Justin Elliott - 3-3, Double / Bob Christilaw - 3-3 / HJ Whapeles - 2-4, Double Randy Olson throws the first pitch of the 2013 season Game 2 began promising, with another lead-off double to deep left-center, this time by Kevin Richey. Richey eventually scored on a wild pitch putting the Iron Pigs ahead 1-0 after the 1st inning. What followed was an anemic (aka the Iron in Iron Pigs was seriously deficient!) offensive effort by the Iron Pigs. 22 batters in a row went hitless over the first 6 innings. Despite a worthy effort on the mound by Mike Murphey; the Pigs again slumped defensively in the 4th and 5th inning and found themselves down 1-4 in the 6th. After a 26 year hiatus from baseball, Marc Melville stepped on the mound in relief and shut down the Nationals in the 6th and 7th. As the bottom of the 7th inning emerged, the Iron Pigs' war cry (SOOOOOWWWEEEEE!!!!) was heard, and the rally began! With the first 2 runners on with Base on Balls, Marc Melville sparked a single, then Mike Gilden blasted it open with a double! An infield out RBI followed to tie the game, with Randy Olson's game winning Sac Fly scoring Mike Gilden from 3rd. The Iron Pigs win 5-4! Winning Pitcher: Marc Melville - Iron Pigs Losing Pitcher: M. Smith - Nationals Marc Melville drives the ball Highlights: Scott (7) -Elliott (6) -Christilaw (2) throw out at home / Richey, Gilden - Doubles To see more photos from our season opener, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs http://www.inwironpigs.org/season-recap.html 12/27/2013 Season Recap - Inland Northwest Iron Pigs Baseball Club Page 2 of 6 July 20, 2013 - Iron Pigs vs. 2012 Defending Champion Tigers “runs come from hits, but hits don’t necessarily equal runs” It initially appeared the game would be a defensive battle, after great plays by both teams left it 0 -0 after 2 innings. The Tigers broke it open with 4 runs in the 3rd, and built it to 10 runs by the end of the 6th. While the Iron Pigs amassed hits in every inning, they had only managed 4 runs going into the top of the 9th. Again the Iron Pigs mounted a last inning rally. Kevin Richey ignited the rally with his second double of the day. The first 7 hitters reached base with 7 total hits in the inning, but the 5-run rally fell short. The Iron Pigs failed to dethrone the Tigers losing 9 -12. The key to the game was run production. The Iron Pigs stranded 14 runners on base with 9 in scoring position, as opposed to the Tigers' 12/6. On a bright note, the Iron Pigs amassed 25 hits in 50 at bats, outhitting the Tigers 25-17, with every player hitting. Winning Pitcher: Mike Lee – Tigers Losing Pitcher: Mike Murphey – Iron Pigs Highlights: Kevin Richey 3-6 2 Doubles / Marc Melville 4-5 Double / Steve Martone 5-5 4 RBIs Kevin Richey smashes one of his two doubles To see more photos from this and other games, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs August 3, 2013 - Double-Header vs. Red Sox "SWEEP!" 24 straight hours of rain on Friday made playing conditions for Saturday seem iffy. But Post Falls Parks and Rec swung into action 3 hours before game time getting our field into great shape! A great job by Post Falls Parks and Rec! Game 1 was all about pitching. The Red Sox sent 3 pitchers to the mound, collectively walking 12 batters and hitting 1. The Iron Pigs did a great job of capitalizing on mistakes and moving runners around the bases. Conversely, Iron Pigs Pitcher Mike Murphey, backed up by a solid defensive effort, pitched a complete game giving up no walks and striking out 8. Third Baseman Steve Martone’s diving grab and throw out to second base from his knees stopped cold a mounting Red Sox rally in the 4th inning. The Iron Pigs down the Sox 8-2. Winning Pitcher: Mike Murphey (1-1) Iron Pigs Losing Pitcher: Adam Shipman - Red Sox Justin Elliott on 3rd Base coached by Randy Olson Game 2 - The Iron Pigs had another solid pitching and defensive game. Starting Pitcher Randy Olson faced only 21 batters in 6 innings, giving up only 1 hit with no earned runs, with four 1-2-3 innings. The Iron Pigs capitalized on every opportunity on offense, with Ken Scott stealing home twice on passed balls. The Iron Pigs mounted (what is becoming) their signature last inning rally with 5 runs on 5 hits, with 3 doubles in a row by Marc Melville, Justin Elliott, and H.J. Whapeles. Iron Pigs sweep the Red Sox with a 10-3 game 2 victory. Winning Pitcher: Randy Olson (1-0) Iron Pigs Losing Pitcher: Brian Hare – Red Sox Highlights: Doubles – Melville, Whapeles, Elliott (3 RBIs) Marc Melville launches a 6th inning double off the top rail of the left center fence To see more photos from this and other games, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs http://www.inwironpigs.org/season-recap.html 12/27/2013 Season Recap - Inland Northwest Iron Pigs Baseball Club Page 3 of 6 August 10, 2013 - Iron Pigs vs. Angels “Like a firework…BOOM!...then a fizzle…” After a scoreless 1 ½ innings, 3rd Baseman Mike Gilden BLASTED (everyone knew it the moment it was launched!) a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning. That began a back and forth battle, each team matching the other, with the Iron Pigs up 4-3 after 5 innings. But then came the fizzle. The Angels scored in each of the last 4 innings, sitting down eight Iron Pigs in a row. The Pigs got back one run in the 8th, but couldn’t muster any more. The Iron Pigs fell to the Angels 5-10. The Iron Pigs finish the first half of the season in the middle of the pack with a 3-3 record. Winning Pitcher – Rickman – Angels Losing Pitcher: Randy Olson (1-1) Iron Pigs Highlights – Mike Gilden 2-4 Home Run / Justin Elliott 3-4 Double / Steve Martone 1-2 Double Kevin Richey at 3rd looking for an opportunity to score To see more photos from this and other games, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs August 17, 2013 - Iron Pigs vs. Nationals “Too little, No late” The Nationals came out swinging, and swinging, and swinging. They hit every gap, nook, and crevice that existed in the Iron Pigs defense. With the outfield back, they dropped in tweeners, and when the outfield moved up, they pounded it over our heads. Credit to Nationals 5-hole hitter Blayze who homered in both the 1st and 2nd innings. When the dust settled after 2 innings, the Nationals were up 11-1. The Iron Pigs rallied for 6 runs in the 3rd inning, closing the gap to 7-11, but were never able to mount another surge. A rotation of Nationals pitchers blanked the Pigs from the 4th inning on. Iron Pigs fall to Nationals 7-15. Winning Pitcher: Sakwi – Nationals Losing Pitcher: Mike Murphey (1-2) – Iron Pigs Highlights – Glenn Buie Double 2 RBIs / Bob Christilaw Double This pretty well sums up Manager Mike Gilden's feelings about this game To see more photos from this and other games, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs August 24, 2013 -Double-Header vs. Tigers “No joy, not even a shred, in Mudville tonight” The Iron Pigs started the day with high spirits, hoping to hand a loss to the undefeated Tigers. Despite a valiant effort by all, the Tigers were on their game and showed why they are the undefeated 1st place team. They revealed no chinks in their armor and dominated both games with 31 total hits including 3 home runs. Game 1 - Winning Pitcher: Mike Lee –Tigers Highlights – Mike Murphey 3-3 Double Losing Pitcher: Ethan Wynecoop –Iron Pigs Mike Murphey smacks a double going 3-3 in Game 1. An apt summary of the day. September 14, 2013- Iron Pigs vs. Red Sox “Clean Sweep!” The Iron Pigs met the Red Sox for their third and final regular season meeting. The Pigs wasted no time getting runs across the plate. In the first inning, the first 8 batters all reached base; the first 4 all with hits, and the next 4 with 3 HBPs and a Walk. When the dust settled after the first inning the Pigs were up 50. Undaunted, the Red Sox battled back with 6 runs over the next 2 innings leading 6-5 after 3 innings. But Middle Reliever Kevin Fennell, backed up by a solid defensive effort, took the mound midway in the third inning and stymied the Sox with 3 2/3 scoreless innings,. The Iron Pigs offensive effort was led by lead-off hitter HJ Whapeles, going 4-5 with 3 doubles and 4 RBIs. The Pigs hit and ran and capitalized on every opportunity, adding 12 more runs to the tally. The Red Sox started to rally in the 9th, but a phenomenal throw out at 3rd base from Left Fielder HJ Whapeles to 3B Glenn Buie broke their momentum. The Iron Pigs made HJ Whapeles leads the offense with 3 doubles it a clean sweep with a final score of 17-9. Winning Pitcher: Kevin Fennell (1-0) – Iron Pigs Losing Pitcher: Brian Hare - Red Sox Highlights – Whapeles 4-5, 3 Doubles, 4 RBIs / Wynecoop 3-4, Double / Nygren 2-3, 2 RBIs To see more photos from this and other games, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs Kevin Fennell shut down the Red Sox with 3 2/3 scoreless innings September 21, 2013- Double-Header vs. Angels “The Angels were blessed” With favorable playoff seeding on the line, The Iron Pigs were determined, but in the end could not keep the Angels down. Game 1 - While the Angels hit and scored consistently, the Iron Pigs were stymied by the Angels’ pitching. The Pigs rallied in the 7th, but 4 runs ended up 4 short of a win. Try as we might, the Iron Pigs couldn't keep the Angels down Game 1 Winning Pitcher: Lance Rickman– Angels Losing Pitcher: Ethan Wynecoop (0-2) – Iron Pigs Highlights – Justin Elliott 3-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs / Glenn Buie 2-3, double To see more photos from this and other games, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs Glenn Buie-San, the Baseball Ninja! Game 2 was a pitcher’s duel. After a rocky first inning, Pitcher Mike Murphey held the Angels scoreless for the next 4 innings. As the Iron Pigs struggled to get hits (only 6 total), they managed runs in the 4th and 6th, tying it up 2-2 in the 6th. But an Angel run in the bottom of the 6th would seal the deal with Angels on top 3-2. http://www.inwironpigs.org/season-recap.html 12/27/2013 Season Recap - Inland Northwest Iron Pigs Baseball Club Winning Pitcher: Bret Fink– Angels Page 5 of 6 Losing Pitcher: Ethan Wynecoop (0-3) – Iron Pigs Highlights – Steve Martone, Double / Mark Nygren, “world’s longest single”! Steve Martone cruises into 2nd with a Double September 28, 2013– “Fall Classic” Double-Header vs. Red Sox "Neither rain, nor wind, nor cold could keep the Fall Classic from being played" With the regular season done, there was still baseball to be played; an exhibition double-header at Avista Stadium called the Fall Classic! The weather was typical Fall in the Inland Northwest; more suited to football than baseball. But the teams would not be deterred from playing on the superb field at Avista Stadium. A special thanks to Chris Duff and Spokane Indians Baseball for making the game possible, and for Groundskeeper Trevor for having the field in great shape Click here to see Spokesman Review coverage of the Fall Classic To see more photos from this and other games, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs As the rain poured down, Game 1 began with the Red Sox quickly jumping to the front with 2 runs in the top of the first inning. But Pitchers Ethan Wynecoop and Randy Olson buckled down and held the Red Sox scoreless for the next 5 2/3 innings; Striking out the sides in the 2nd (Wynecoop) and the 6th (Olson). In the meantime, the Pigs chipped away and went into the top of the 7th ahead 4-2. With Olson pitching well and a single out to go, a highly controversial managerial decision was made to bring in Steve Martone, wearing a #42 NY Yankees jersey, taking the mound with “Enter Sandman” playing in the background. Martone proceeded to give up hits to the first 2 batters, allowing the Red Sox to tie the game 4-4 before getting the final out. The Iron Pigs wasted no time. Lead-off hitter Ken Scott walked and stole 2nd, followed by HJ Whapeles blasting the game-winning walk-off triple through the left-center gap. Iron Pigs win 5-4, with the "Sandman" sandbagging himself a big W! Winning Pitcher: Steve Martone (1-1) – Iron Pigs Losing Pitcher: Ozzie Smith – Red Sox Highlights – Whapeles, Walk-off game-winning triple / Wynecoop, double / Christilaw 2-2 / Olson 2-2 Starting Pitcher Ethan Wynecoop struck out 7 Red Sox in 4 innings As Game 2 began, the rain had stopped, but the wind now howled through the stadium causing teeth to chatter. The Iron Pigs struck quickly with a run in the first. The Red Sox put up 2 in the bottom of the third taking the lead. Middle Reliever Kevin Fennell brought his mojo again (See Sept. 14 recap above) against the Sox, blanking them in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. The Iron Pigs consistently moved runners around the bases scoring 6 total runs on 11 hits. The Pigs made it a sweep winning 6-3. Winning Pitcher: Mike Murphey (2-2) – Iron Pigs Losing Pitcher: Brian Hare – Red Sox Highlights – Elliott 3-3 / Buie, double / Christilaw, double / Olson 2-3 Catcher Bob Christilaw connects for a double, one of his 3 hits on the day. http://www.inwironpigs.org/season-recap.html 12/27/2013 Season Recap - Inland Northwest Iron Pigs Baseball Club Page 6 of 6 October 5, 2013 - Playoff Game 1 vs. Tigers “So Close!” The INMBL 35+ Division Playoffs began on a chilly October day with frost on the ground, but not a cloud in the sky. The #4 Seed Iron Pigs headed to Cheney in an attempt to upset the undefeated #1 Tigers. Winner would stay in Cheney to battle for the division championship, loser would be forced to travel 40 miles to Post Falls to play the consolation game. That alone was plenty of motivation. The Iron Pigs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on 2 rare Tiger errors. The Pigs then shut down the Tigers’ first inning with Right Fielder Ethan Wynecoop throwing a bullet to Catcher Bob Christilaw to cut a run at the plate. The Tigers tied it up 1-1 after 2 innings, but the top of the Iron Pigs’ order came out swinging in the top of the 3rd and put 2 runs across the plate, pulling ahead 3-1. The Tigers surged back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, turning the score in their favor 4-3. The Iron Pigs would make it even again 4-4 in the top of the 5th with a Kevin Richey double and a Sacrifice Fly by HJ Whapeles. The Tigers clawed their way to another run in the bottom of the 5th after a lead-off double. The 6th inning was scoreless as the Iron Pigs shut down Justin Elliott turns a double-play that shut down a Tiger surge in the 6th inning a Tiger surge with an inning ending double-play. The Pigs refused to quit. 3 of the first 4 batters singled in the top of the 7th, loading the bases with one out, prompting a Tiger pitching change. That Winning Pitcher: Dan Pitman – Tigers would be the Pigs’ undoing as the Tiger’s relief pitcher registered a strikeout, pick off, and strikeout. Losing Pitcher: Ethan Wynecoop (0-4) – Iron Pigs Highlights – Justin Elliott, double, 2 RBIs / Kevin The Iron Pigs valiantly go down to defeat 4-5, and were forced to journey to Post Falls… Richey 2-3, double / Throw out at Home Plate Wynecoop (RF) to Christilaw (C) To see more photos from this and other games, check our Facebook page at Inland NW Iron Pigs October 5, 2013 - Playoff Game 2 vs. Nationals "a good end to a good season" The battle for 3rd place almost didn’t happen. The Nationals lost players after their first game and refused to play with 8. Iron Pigs’ Steve Martone graciously agreed to play with the Nationals so we could play. As much as we want to win, we would rather lose and finish last, than place 3rd by forfeit. Pigs just want to play baseball!! The Iron Pigs jumped out immediately to a 3 run lead and never looked back. After the first 2 batters walked, Justin Elliott doubled them both across the plate, and then scored on a Sacrifice Fly by Bob Christilaw. The Pigs matched their 1st inning with another 3 runs in the 2nd inning, taking a 60 lead. The Nationals rallied in the 4th (Blayze - 2-run homer) and 6th innings, but Pitchers Mike Murphey and Kevin Fennell backed by the Pigs’ defense held them in check. The Iron Pigs best the Nationals 8-5 and finish their season in 3rd place in the INMBL 35+ Division. Out at First!
