Labelexpo Commits
To Brussels For 2017
The organizers of Labelexpo Europe have confirmed that 2017’s
edition is set to remain at Brussels
Expo in Belgium. Home to the biennial event since 1985, the decision
was taken following a year-long
venue research project.
The results of this were presented to
the Labelexpo Advisory Board along
with the findings of a consultation of
key stakeholders on a potential location change. As well as reviewing Brussels, other shortlisted destinations
evaluated by site visits included
Barcelona, Amsterdam and Stuttgart.
Further venue options in Geneva,
Madrid, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt
were also researched having already
discounted other locations based on
their immediate suitability.
“Feedback was received and reviewed from over 1,000 exhibitors
and visitors and Brussels and
Barcelona emerged as the two main
contenders for 2017’s show,” said Lisa
Milburn, Managing Director of the Labelexpo Global Series. “While an interest in moving to Barcelona was

lexo converters are part of an intricate supply chain that
weaves them together with retailers and consumer products companies. Leading flexo companies understand that an
important element to remaining competitive is to look beyond
the walls of their own converting operations and pay heed to
the concerns of their other partners in the chain.
As the nation’s largest retailer, Walmart’s voice is certainly one
that carries a great
deal of weight, and
flexo printers should
certainly pay close
attention. While the
company still struggles to rectify many
of the workforce
problems that have
plagued it for years,
there’s no question

the retail giant has
had a positive effect on the general outlook of sustainability
and the ways in which it plays into the entire supply chain.
Recently, Walmart released the 8th annual edition of its Global Responsibility Report, which reviews the company’s social
and environmental work over the course of the past year. The
company stated it has focused on its workforce, specifically accelerating job mobility, empowering women worldwide, accelerating reintegration of veterans into civilian life, and
developing suppliers and small businesses.
From the standpoint of a converting operation, the most actionable information comes in Walmart’s efforts toward lowering its environmental footprint.

clear, there was more opposition to a location change
expressed by those who preferred Brussels and it
would have affected footfall. Brussels is also set to undergo a major regeneration project (called NEO Brussels) with the Heyzel Plateau site, where Brussels
Expo is based, being redeveloped and its metro and
tramway lines being further improved and extended.”

The company’s stated goal is to advance toward
100 percent renewable energy. Another goal is to
procure seven billion kilowatt hours of renewable
energy by 2020 through the use of solar, wind and
fuel cell technologies. The company currently has
more than 380 renewable energy projects in operation or under development in five countries and 17
U.S. states.
The company’s goal of creating zero waste has
motivated Walmart to improve waste data management and reduce and divert food and materials from
turning to waste. The company’s U.S. operation’s operational waste diversion reportedly improved to
82.4 percent in 2014.The company reduced food
throwaway by 11 percent in emerging markets with
the strongest results coming from Central America
and Mexico.
Naturally, a primary component of Walmart’s corporate responsibility plans come in the form of sustainability. The company’s sustainability goals begin with
sourcing responsibly. Last year, the company expanded the ability to identify and monitor its supplier and
product compliance and to hold suppliers accountable for adhering to its standards.
Cutting Emissions
The retailer said it is currently on track to eliminate
20 million metric tons of GHG emissions from its
global supply chain by the end of this year. Walmart
has partnered with the Environmental Defense Fund
to work on projects that have reduced more than
17.4 metric tons of GHG emissions from its supply
chain last year.
Food remains the company’s largest product category, and Walmart said it is dedicated to improving
the sustainability of the food system. Collaborating
with its suppliers, the company envisions four key
pillars in regard to this commitment. These include
improving the affordability of food for both customers and the environment, increasing food access,
making healthier eating easier, and improving the
safety and transparency of the food chain. Walmart instituted a Climate Smart Agriculture Platform in the
hopes of improving agricultural productivity.
By the end of last year, Walmart had formed joint
agricultural partnerships with 17 suppliers, cooperatives and service providers on 23 million acres of
land with the potential to reduce 11 million metric
tons of GHG by 2020.
Last year, Walmart had contributed $2 billion to
fight hunger in the United States. It opened 375
stores to serve food deserts across the United States

Performance and profit
regardless of the size of the run:
.Vpak.™
With the Goss Vpak web offset press you’ll consistently
profit no matter how big or small the press run. Why?
Because job changes can be done quickly compared to
flexo and gravure. Run speeds are twice as fast as sheet fed
offset. Add to that, offset plates are typically 5% of the cost
of flexo plates or gravure cylinders. Vpak even approaches
and, in some cases, exceeds the efficiencies of digital for
short runs. As the marketplace trends toward more and
shorter print runs, the Vpak is the profitable solution.
Designed specifically for packaging, the Vpak can be
configured to run film, foil and paperboard substrates.
Vpak brings Goss renowned reliability and print quality
to the packaging market and won the prestigious
Intertech Technology Award in 2014.

Corrugated Market To Reach
US$173.6 Million By 2020
The global corrugated packaging market is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of
4.0 percent during 2014 to 2020, to reach an estimated USD $173.6 million by 2020, according to a new
market report published by Persistence Market Research Global Market Study on Corrugated Packaging: Glassware and ceramics application to witness
highest growth by 2020.
The corrugated packaging market is thriving, said
the report, mainly due to growing end-user industries, including food, medicine, consumer durables,
rubber, and petroleum. Benefits associated with corrugated packaging such as sustainability and low cost
makes it one of the preferred modes of packaging
across various industries. Emerging markets offer
tremendous growth opportunities for the corrugated
packaging market due to increasing population and
growing demand for consumer products in these regions. The e-commerce industry has emerged as one
of the key drivers for the global corrugated packaging market.
However, certain restraints such as low endurance
of corrugated packaging and stalled growth across
certain end-user industries are affecting market
growth, according to the report. The market, in terms
of competitive structure, is consolidated through
large numbers of mergers and acquisitions. This indicates tough sustainability in this market.
Increasing population coupled with rising per capita
income is encouraging industrial production worldwide, which, consequently, is increasing the number of
shipments. Owing to low costs and easy handling, corrugated packaging is considered as ideal for shipments
across several industries, said the report.
Food and healthcare are among the fastest growing
industries in China that use corrugated packaging.
The processed food sector in China is growing at a
rate of more than 10 percent. Electrical equipment
and machinery (a key end-user for the corrugated
packaging market) market in China is growing at
more than 11 percent. Indonesia is another emerging
economy with a large number of food processing
companies. This, in turn, is driving the corrugated
packaging market.
China, Japan, India, and Indonesia are the major corrugated packaging material producers in Asia Pacific. The
Unites States, said the report, leads the corrugated
packaging material production in North America while
the European market is dominated by Italy, France, Germany, Spain, the U.K., and Poland. Brazil and Turkey feature among the leading corrugated packaging material
producers in Rest of the World (RoW).

From a converter’s standpoint, one of the most notable recent developments is the just-launched Sustainability Leaders Shop, which now appears on the
company’s web site. This allows customers to see
which brands and suppliers are leading in product
categories as they try to improve sustainability based
on their Walmart Sustainability Index scores. This is
another means for Walmart to hold CPGs and converters accountable for their actions pertaining to
sustainability.
It’s important to consider that while Walmart’s
Global Responsibility Report is specific for the company, flexo printers would be wise to acknowledge
that many retailers, both large and small, as well as
CPGs, are attempting to achieve ver y similar
goals.Converters that can aid in attaining the goals
set forward by retailers and CPGs will set themselves
apart and distinguish themselves as true partners.

identity, which includes
the animals and people who live and interact in
forests, reinforces the all-encompassing approach FSC
takes to sustainable forest management.
“Forests are so much more than trees and timber;
they are reservoirs for clean drinking water, protection for animals and endangered wildlife, and home
to indigenous peoples and communities,” said Kim
Carstensen, Director General of FSC.
“With markets opening up in Asia, Latin America
and Africa, it was time go beyond outreach to producers and retailers,” he continued. “Supply grows in

responsible businesses practices.”
