Marion Night Invitationals Marion City Schools Community Connections june 2014 Page 4 Boys & Girls Club Announce 2014 Summer Program The Boys and Girls Club of Marion County will be holding a nine week summer program running from June 9th- August 15th, 2014. This will be located at the Boys & Girls Club at 565 Oak Street Monday through Friday, 7:30am- 5:30pm. Enrollment is open to any student in kindergarten through high school. Breakfast, lunch, and a snack will be provided. Rates for the summer program are based on a sliding fee scale ranging from $5 per week to $50 a week per member. Over the summer, low income children go through greater learning losses than higher income children, so no child will be turned down. Educational activities are key to the success of the summer campaign. Educational programming will be offered such as Academic Enhancement, which strengthens skills children learn at school. These fun but beneficial activities include leisure reading, writing activities, flash cards and other educational learning games. Along with educational opportunities, members participate in activities in the art room, dance room, game rooms, gym- sports and physical fitness. Members will also have the opportunity to participate in swimming once a week at the Lincoln Aquatic Center and field trips downtown to the Palace Theatre. Members will also get to participate in planting, growing, and taking care of our Club garden with the best part being able to see and sample the finished products while learning about healthy eating! This summer program is not just for young children, but for older teens as well. If you would like more information about the summer program including applications, visit our website www.bgcmarion.org, or contact The Boys and Girls Club of Marion County at 565 Oak Street, P.O. Box 207, Marion Ohio, 43302 or call 740-387-3462 for more details. Grant Gives Back to Community 4th Graders Tour Marion Campus Amara Laidley and BranDee Long, representatives from the ”Great at Grant” Program along with their teacher, Mrs. Margaret Kleinhenz traveled to Turning Point to donate $261.00 that was raised during Spirit Week at Grant Middle School. “Grant Gives Back” is an after school club that members participate in activities to “give back”to their community. The girls organized a fundraiser (dress down/spirit week) in which the students and staff at Grant Middle School paid to dress in different themed clothes, pajamas, etc. The girls did everything from researching which organizations they wanted to give back, and proposed the idea to their prinicpal, Mrs. Wood. Marion City Schools’ entire 4th grade toured The Ohio State University at Marion and Marion Technical College this month. Organizers urged students to start thinking of college as early as elementary school. “We wanted to plant the seed that everyone can go to college – and it is never too early to begin thinking about it,” said MCS curriculum director Leah Filliater. “Allowing students to walk on the campus, tour some of the buildings, and build that excitement of what college is like is a great door to open for students.” Marion City Schools partners with The Ohio State at Marion in its GoBUCKs program, which awards vouchers to help cover tuition for students who perform well academically and meet other benchmarks in elementary school. Pictured, l-r: Mrs. Paula Burnside, Program Director, Amara Laidley, BranDee Long, Mrs. Margaret Kleinhenz Rep. Jordan Visits Rushmore U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan visited Rushmore Academy and shared advice with students on May 13. “Never let someone tell you that you can’t accomplish something you want to accomplish,” Jordan said. He told students to set goals then “be willing to work hard.” “Hard work doesn’t always guarantee you will be successful, but it sure improves your chances,” he said. HHS Students Earn MTC Credits Harding High School and Marion Technical College will work closer together to let students earn college credit while in high school. The high school will offer dual enrollment courses in business. Students will study business-related computer applications like Microsoft Office Suite 2013 as well as business communications and principals of marketing. Business teacher Tola Sanusi will teach the courses. She said students will be able to earn both college and high school credits by taking the classes. That means they can get college credit for only a $20 fee compared to the cost of tuition once they graduate high school and go to college. She hopes when students take the courses they can get a better idea of what it’s like to attend college. For all your custom printing needs, call Jay at 1-800-448-3235 ext. 234. A few of Rushmore’s success stories include Jarrod Aldridge, recently promoted to shift manager at Rally’s, and Thaddaeus Smith, promoted at Rocky’s Cyclery and Fitness. Aldridge, 20, graduated in May. He said Rushmore convinced him to seek employment. “They forced me to get a job,” he said. “That way they knew I was going down the right path.” Aldridge said Rushmore gave him the flexibility needed to do school around his work schedule. The school also helped him complete what he had to do to graduate. “I’ve just been pushing forward so that I can make a good life for my son and family,” he said. If he hadn’t gone to Rushmore, he said, “I think I would end up getting my GED and I would not have this job today.” Aldridge said he appreciates the experience he’s getting at Rally’s. Smith, a junior at Rushmore, recently got promoted to assistant manager at Rocky’s. He has worked at the store, owned by his grandmother, for about four years. Among tasks he likes the best are working on bikes and talking to customers. “I enjoy it a lot,” he said. “I just like working on things.” Smith has attended Rushmore since his sophomore year and hopes to graduate next year. He didn’t like school at Harding but said he likes it more at Rushmore. “If you need help, they’ll help you,” he said, discussing how Rushmore’s schedule is more flexible and how there are less students in a class. “You have teachers you can ask for help. You can talk to any of the teachers,” he said. Smith has taken a college course while at Rushmore and hopes to take more his senior year. He plans to pursue a degree in business management after he graduates from Rushmore. Congratulations, Rushmore Academy Graduates! 1299 Harding Hwy. E. Book ideas are everywhere.” Stevens said that, when she was a student, she wasn’t the best artist. But she enjoyed it and found out something. “I loved to paint and draw. The more I did, the better I got,” she said. “If you like to do something, you do it all the time. And if you do it all the time, you get better.” The author also told students to not be afraid to make mistakes, but to learn from them instead. Page 7 Site Word Champions! Six preschoolers in Lindsey Newell’s classes at Garfield Elementary show off their champion ribbons for reciting all of their site words. ‘Woodland Elves’ Author Visits Harrison Elementary Shary Williamson, author of the book “Woodland Elves” and a former Marion City Schools teacher, visited Harrison Elementary in May. Williamson talked about her book and encouraged students to be themselves and to be creative. She talked about how she had a diary at their age. “I talked to it because it was my friend,” she said. “It is time for you to start thinking about maybe getting your own diary.” She encouraged students to never give up as she talked about how another author sent their book out 220 times before it was published. She compared teachers to editors and said that, when teachers use their “red pens” to edit papers, they are only telling students that they can do better.
