Buena Vista nursing home residents get big gift
Fundraisers pay off and lead to installation
of televisions in rooms at Magnolia Manor

The residents of Magnolia
Manor of Marion County got a
big gift – make that 30 big gifts
– last week thanks to the nursing home Auxiliary and all the
people who have supported their
fundraising efforts.
Several Auxiliary members
were present at the nursing
home in Buena Vista to see 30
brand new televisions arrive.
The TVs are for the residents’
personal rooms, so they will
make a huge difference in their
lives.
The funds used to purchase
the televisions came from the
last three years worth of Lovelight Tree donations. That is an
annual fundraiser conducted by
the Auxiliary.
“We thank everyone for the
donations over the last three
years,” said Auxiliary President
Julie Taylor. “The latest project
we have had was the purchase
of the televisions for the rooms
to give them a little more entertainment. Also, it gives the
residents that feeling of being at
home as well as keeping them in-
formed
on the
rest of
t h e
world.

years
and is in thanks to all the generous donors of the Lovelight
Tree along with other auxiliary
fundraisers.”
Schley High wins Area 1A Literary Championship
Schley County High School’s team came
out on top of seven other schools to win the
Area 1A Literary Championship on Saturday,
February 27 at Irwin County High School. They
also had three team members – Doug Goodin,
Laken Waters, Michael Wise – who qualified to
compete at the State Championship.
Schley County’s team members shown above
are Laken Waters, Leigh Crumbley, Michael
Wise, Jessica Reese, Christian Arnett, Mikaela
Ellis, Melody Thai, Ginny Calhoun, Lacey Tuck-
er, Logan Hair, Lucas Sellers, Doug Goodin,
Jared McAllister, and Will Cobb, along with Literary Coordinator Patti Wurtz. The team’s Musical Accompanist was Judy McClellan.
The schools in Area 1A are Talbotton, Dooly County, Hawkinsville, Irwin County, Marion
County, Schley County, Turner County, and Wilcox County.
The State Championship Literary Meet will be
held on Saturday, March 12 at Veterans High
School in Kathleen (near Warner Robins).
Marion Co. Chamber begins
work on local ‘Heritage Map’

A decent sized group of local
residents took part is a special
“Heritage Map” meeting sponsored by the Marion County
Chamber of Commerce recently.
The Chamber arranged for
students from Columbus State
University to meet with locals
at Marion County Middle/High
School to hear their stories of
local history and scan historic
photos and documents. The information will be used to create
a “Heritage Map”. Possible uses
include a “driving tour” of the
county and use in a future “Marion County Museum.”

Years ago teacher Roslyn (Wade) Oliver at Tri County High
School in Marion County taught a Georgia History class and
also led students in publishing the “Swamp Fox” magazine,
which included stories and photos about local history, interesting local residents, etc. Now, the Marion County Chamber
of Commerce is seeking copies.
Sadly, Mrs. Oliver reports that her copies were water damaged and as this was in the days before easy electronic archiving, she has no record of them.
Anyone who has copies of the magazines (or articles from
them) is asked to contact the Chamber of Commerce.
“I am trying to put together a library of them to display
and to refer to,” said Chamber President Debby Ford. “The
history recorded in those publications is important and they
can also help us with our heritage mapping.”
Ford said she would prefer that the magazines be donated
to the Chamber, but if not, they will be happy to make a copy

some old records of the history of Union United Methodist
Church.
Mulkey McMichael also
shared a wealth of historical
documents, including old copies
of the Marion Patriot newspaper that dated back to the early
1900s. The June 24, 1910 issue
featured a “Closing Out Sale”
for R.E. Clements & Sons. It
advertised $15 suits for $7.50

Seiki brand LED types (60hz).
They cost $197.98 each for a
grand total of $5,939.37 (along
with the wall mounts).
This is just the latest in a long
line of projects undertaken and
completed by the Auxiliary with
the support of donations from
local residents and others who
support the nursing home.

Lumpkin hosts grueling
Canyon Crash Trail Runs

One hundred-thirty four brave
souls competed in the Annual
Flatlanders Canyon Crash Trail
Runs held Saturday, Feb. 27
in Providence Canyon, Lumpkin. They participated in races
of four different lengths – 5K,
10K, Half Marathon, and 50K
“Ultra.”
Those who have hiked in the
picturesque canyon know that
the terrain and elevation changes are very challenging.
Among the participants was
the local father-and-son duo of
Danny Lockhart and Christian
“Goose” Lockhart of Geneva.
Mr. Lockhart, 43, was one of
the 23 runners who tackled the
“ultra” distance of 31.5 miles in
the 50K race. He placed eighth
with a time of 6:32:21.
“Goose,” who is only 9-yearsold, completed the Half Marathon race (13.1 miles) with a
time of 2:34:24, which put him
in 15th place among all runners
in the event. He was also the
youngest finisher by far. The
next closest was Bre Ragsdale,
19, of Athens, who won the Half
Marathon.
There were also two local participants in the 5K Race – William Thompson, 36, of Buena
Vista (33:33) and Sarah Lynch,
17, of Lumpkin (36:55).
The overall winners in each
event were: 50K – Aaron Thomas, 44, of Ranger (5:11:32); Half
Marathon – Bre Ragsdale, 19, of
Athens (1:51:44); 10K – Emily
Lasater, 33, of Chattanooga, TN
(56:53); and 5K – Percy Carter,
Danny Lockhart manages to smile during the tough 50K Race.

Annual Membership Meeting
Locals asked for ‘Show & Tell’ items
The Ellaville-Schley
County Historical Society is having
its
annual
Membership
Meeting on
Saturday
March 5th at
Busy 1930 Street Scene in Ellaville
the American
Legion in Ellaville at 7 p.m.
All members and friends are asked to bring some “Show and
Tell” history with all the information about each item. They
are also asking for any history that could be included in the
upcoming History Book that they will be working on soon.
Only copies of material are requested so that the submitter
can keep the originals. This information would be things like
wills, deeds, documents and pictures with all details provided.
Family lineages are also needed. The original History of
Schley County Georgia was compiled in 1981-1982 and needs
to be updated since a lot has happened in the past 38 years.
Everyone is invited to join in on this meeting. If you need

to offer college
classes soon
In partnership with Columbus Technical College, Stewart
County High School will offer College English Courses at
SCHS starting this summer.
This extraordinary opportunity is made available to qualifying students in part because
of the Move On When Ready
(MOWR) Act, which means
that students are dually enrolled
in high school and college
courses at the same time receiving credit from both. MOWR
provides high school students
the opportunity to “jump start”
postsecondary education during
the high school years.
The English Courses offered
include English 1101 (Summer 2016); English 1102 (Fall
