Tyler Automotive’s ‘Tin Man’ adds
flair to downtown Buena Vista
By Mulkey McMichael
Unique creations spark
discussion and comment.
The “Tin Man” (really
Steel Man) at Tyler Automotive on the square in
Buena Vista has become a
comment-creating fixture.
Kim Tyler, son of Bonnie
Tyler and the late Rueben
Tyler, allowed his team of
men to design and complete the piece. From a head
made of a tractor muffler to
feet of exhaust pipes, the
creation deserves closer
scrutiny. His eyes are made
of bulldozer washers, his
legs of exhaust pipes, his
arms of flex pipe, nose of

hope is based on the fact that
they will be able to use a lower
amount of pressure to get water
to the customers in the north
part of the county.
The county’s water system has
around 283 miles of pipe. Having two sources of water will
also make it easier for the Water
Department to isolate leaks and
make repairs with fewer water
customers being without water
during the repair time.
The county has already been
awarded in a low-interest loan
from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA)
for a $497,245 through the
Georgia Fund Loan program.
The county will pay 1.52 percent interest on the 15-year
loan, which qualifies for an interest rate reduction because it
is an eligible energy conservation project.
Road Improvements: Commissioners also continued their
ongoing discussion of improving roads. Local residents James
and Dorothy Cook attended the
meeting to ask that the county
work on Doyle Road, which
they say is in bad condition and
also has an increased amount of
traffic now with people using it
as a “cut through” on the way to
the new middle/high school.
The commissioners noted that
they recently got estimates for
two phases of work to improve
Doyle Road ($458,829 and
$275,859) that that while there
is not currently an exact time-
line for the work to be done, it
is something that they are planning on getting to when they
can (along with various other
road improvement projects).
Also during the meeting, the
commissioners:
* Voted to lease a bulldozer
for five years with an option to
purchase.
* Re-appointed Bernice McCall to the DFCS Board for four
years.
* Heard from EMA Director
Sam Schiro on possibilities for
various grants.
* Amended the budget for the
Health Department to include
the cost of new doors (with
money saved from lower insurance premiums).
* Got an update from Gerald
Mixon of River Valley Regional
Corporation on the Joint Comprehensive Plan with the City
of Buena Vista, which is being
updated.
* Approved adjustments to
two water bills for customers
who had leaks.
* Approved the minutes of the
April 14 meeting.

Solar cookers in action in Stewart County
By Sidne Larkins
In Ms. Jordan’s Environmental
Science class at Stewart County, the students constructed solar cookers. We were learning
about renewable and nonrenewable energy sources, so we decided to test the effectiveness of
solar energy, which is a renewable energy source.
We took pizza boxes and covered the boxes with black construction paper. Then we cut a
flap into the top of the box and
covered it with aluminum foil.
The opening of the box was
covered with plastic wrap.
We put the food into our solar
cookers and took them outside
Marion County
Jail Log
to cook in the sun. We went outside at 9 a.m. to set up our cookers and left them out for five
hours. The finished products
were cooked thoroughly.
We cut open the hot dogs to
sample them. The food tasted
just like food cooked with electricity or gas.
We enjoyed this experiment
and learned that some food
items can be cooked with solar
energy.
