Lady Wildcats were bit by injury bug early,
but plan to hustle, fight, and never give up
By Richard Harris
The Schley County High School girls’
varsity basketball team has a tough row
to hoe this season, as they have a very
young squad (seven freshmen) and also
lost perhaps their best player in the very
first game of the season. Still, Head
Coach Jody Sellars said they will play
hard, never give up, and strive to be
competitive in every game.
“The strength of our team this year is
that they will not roll over,” said Coach
Sellars. “The hustle and will play until
the game is over. They get out there and
run the floor.”
Last year’s quad finished 12-14 and
two of those players graduated (Trenity
Coleman, Whitney Worth). This year’s
top player was expected to be junior
Brandilyn Cromer, but she was injured
in the third quarter of the first game
when she tore her mcl. The injury ended
her season, as she is not expected to
play again this year.
On top of Cromer’s season-ending injury, another key post player, freshman
Mindy Carol Register, missed the early
portion of the season due to a broken
wrist.
“Both loses really hurt us in the
rebounding and scoring departments,”
Coach Sellars said.
Key players remaining on the court
for the Lady Wildcats include:
* Bethany Phillips, senior, guard, #22:
The best overall athlete on the team, she
is capable of scoring 10-20 points per
game.
* MaReisha Brooks, senior, guard,
#3: A great shooter who is capable of
scoring 10 points per game.
* Chelsey Carter, sophomore, guard,
#5: Another great shooter who can also
get to the basket and can score in the
10-20 point range.
* Emily Campbell, freshman, guard,
#11: Although only a freshman, she is
another really good shooter who may
score 10-points per game.
The Lady Wildcats are facing a lot
of tough competition this year in the
strong Region 4A, which includes defending state champion Taylor County.
“We have some pretty good competition in the region,” said Coach Sellars. “Taylor County is a powerhouse
that should repeat as state champions
(they’re off to a 16-2 start this year).
Greenville has great talent, too, and has
one really exceptional player. The rest
of the teams match up pretty well in
my opinion.”
He said the Lady Cats’ goals are “to
be competitive every game and out
hustle our opponents.”
Head Coach Jody Sellars is assisted
by Coach Carla Solomon.
