A Message from our Board Chairman and President
Dedication This Annual Report is dedicated to the memory of Marion Greer. We will always be grateful for her longstanding commitment to Family Service Association and to her community. MI SSION S TAT E ME NT We are committed to providing a wide array of high quality programs and services designed to strengthen and support individuals and families and to addressing the social service needs of our very diverse and changing communities. A Message from our Board Chairman and President: Winston Churchill once stated, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” As with so many things said by the British Prime Minister during his remarkable lifetime, these words most certainly ring true. Over the years, Family Service Association has been blessed by the commitment and dedication of an enormous number of talented volunteer members of our Board of Directors. They are the unsung heroes of our agency, quietly providing the guidance and support needed to facilitate the accomplishment of our goals and the fulfillment of our important mission. “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” At our monthly meetings, Board members often deal in formality. But woven throughout the reports, motions, discussions and other formal proceedings is their keen awareness of the value of the programs and services that ultimately result. The close attention to the business of the agency by our governing leaders is always coupled with their kindness, care and compassion. They are volunteers who take considerable time away from their own personal and professional pursuits because they believe in our agency and its ability to make a significant difference in the lives of others. And there are no better examples than Marion Greer, Anne Fortier and Jack Hubbard. While we are truly saddened by the recent passing of Marion, we are both comforted and inspired by the enormous contribution she made to improve the lives of others. As a longstanding member of our Board, and through countless other volunteer activities throughout her life, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to healthcare, education and service to others. Anne Fortier first joined the Board of Directors four decades ago, serving as Board Treasurer for 35 consecutive years. In addition to her many other responsibilities, she paid us weekly visits in order to attend to agency business - a duty she performed quietly, consistently, and without fanfare. Jack Hubbard has been a volunteer Board member since 1989. Concern for the needs of our nation’s veterans is a driving force for Jack, carrying over to his volunteer work here as well as with other worthy community organizations. With the passing of Marion, and the retirement this year from the Board of Anne and Jack, we are entering a new era of governance at Family Service Association. But although the responsibilities will now be turned over to others, their combined 99 years of service will leave an indelible imprint on Family Service Association and the work it does. The importance of volunteer leadership in the governance of community-based agencies like ours simply cannot be overstated. We are grateful to all those who contribute their time to help those in need. In particular, we thank Marion Greer, Anne Fortier and Jack Hubbard for their unselfish service to FSA and to the community. Winston Churchill was correct when he said, “…we make a life by what we give” and they have given us very much. Paul S. Medeiros Carol A.
