Last summer I spent a week ice
climbing on Fox Glacier in New Zealand
with my girlfriend Mel and fellow
Paddy’s Canberra staff Jeremy and
Michelle. Here the flat and narrow
coastal plain suddenly rears up over
three kilometres to the stunning and
savage Southern Alps, and the glaciers
wind down the valleys to the temperate
rainforest below.
Exploring the glacier, we squeezed
between walls of slick blue ice, walked
up miniature river valleys formed in the
ice by meltwater streams, and abseiled
into deep melt-holes called moulins.
The climbing was fantastic and we
found walls to suit everyone’s abilities
from gentle slopes to 30 metre tall
overhanging seracs. A bit scary, I
regularly found myself traversing high
blades of ice in order to set top rope
anchors.
was my North Face softshell jacket,
which did a great job buffering me
against the elements without letting
me overheat. Mel was rocking the
full Patagonia layering system in her
Capilene baselayers, super-warm
R3 Hoody and Torrentshell jacket.
One of the great things about working
at Paddy’s is meeting great people who
love adventure, exploring and talking
gear. We spent as much time chatting
about gear as climbing! My favourite
Kirill has been a Paddy Pallin staff
member for three years.
Fox Glacier is only a day’s drive from
Christchurch. Though you can join a
guided walk, with the right experience
and gear the whole place is open to
independent exploration!
