LOGLINE
Lil’ Chucky Charley is an 8-year-old boy coming of age in the ‘50s who discovers his Juke Joint Jug,
bug friends, and talent for playing guitar in an unexpected, magical way.
PILOT SYNOPSIS
Right before his 8th birthday, Lil’ Chucky Charley’s grandma Theadosia (Momma Dosia) gives him an
amber jar as an early present. He finds this gift sort of strange, since it is still August and his birthday
is a month away. But Momma Dosia feels in her spirit that it is the right time to give it to him.
Though Lil’ Chucky Charley doesn’t know it, that jug has a special connection to him. His grandpa
Poppa Jonas (Momma Dosia’s late husband), accidentally discovered the jug while sleep walking in the
woods the night Lil’ Chucky Charley was born.
Lil’ Chucky Charley doesn’t ask questions about the unusual gift. He knows that Momma Dosia is a
wise, tough-as-nails woman with a warm heart and gift for seeing things before they happen. Like a
well-mannered boy who is taught to respect his elders, he simply smiles and thanks his grandma for
the present.
After Momma Dosia hands the amber jug to Lil’ Chucky Charley, she reaches out her arms for a hug
and pulls him tightly to her bosom.
“I love my little babies! How about a slice of my delicious sweet potato pie?” she says.
That night, Momma Dosia gathers her four grandchildren together in the front room of her shotgun
house in the country side of Wilkinson County, Georgia. She starts to sing a spiritual, then tells them
a story about Poppa Jonas.
“Children did you know that your Poppa Jonas was the strongest man in the county? That’s right! He could
lift and carry a bale of cotton on his back, without flinching an eyelid! Your Poppa was a pretty good dancer
too, when it came to doing the Ball of Jack! He was quite a man, yes indeed!”
When the other children fall asleep, grandma Dosia shares a secret about the amber jar with Lil’
Chucky Charley.
“Now, Lil’ Charley,” she says, “let me tell you somethin’ about Poppa Jonas’ jug. It’s got a whole lot of magic
in it! But you gotta have patience and let it find you.”

The following day, Lil’ Chucky Charley decides to try the jug out. Wouldn’t it be great if the magic
could make his chores of rounding up pigs, catching chickens and chopping wood disappear? He tries
rubbing the jug over and over, closing his eyes and making a wish. But to his disappointment, when
he opens his eyes, his work is still there. Determined to unlock the magic, Lil’ Chucky Charley tries
something else. He says a prayer on his knees, then rubs the jug some more. Nothing!
Finally, he asks Old Man Chapman, the owner of the farm where he works during the summer, to
hold it for him. Lil’ Chucky Charley wishes for a strong gush of wind to blow crops of beans, corn,
potato into the sack. He prays for it to lift watermelons and cantaloupes up out of the fields and
onto a flatbed trailer-tractor nearby; He wishes and waits for the wind to start blowing harder and
harder. But again, nothing happens!
When Lil’ Chucky Charley returns to his house after a long, hard day, he tosses the amber jar in the
fields in frustration.
“Just another stupid old folks’ fairy tale,” Lil’ Chucky Charley says angrily.
As he remembers Momma Dosia’s hugs and encouraging words about the magic of the jar, Charley
sits down next to the picket fence and starts to cry.
Suddenly, a little green junebug starts to circle around him. Lil’ Chucky Charley tries to shoo it away,
but the pesky insect won’t leave him alone. It flies near his ear, loops around his head.
Finally Lil’ Chucky Charley has had enough. He jumps up and chases the bug all around the grassy field.
The junebug slips to safety inside the amber jar, just narrowly escaping Lil’ Chucky Charley’s grasp.
When Lil’ Chucky Charley kneels down to peek inside the top, he sees something that startles him.
A swirling cloud of blue smoke quickly fills the amber jar engulfing the bug, then a bright flash of light
shoots out of the jug and temporarily blinds Lil’ Chucky Charley. When his vision returns, he doesn’t
see the little green junebug anymore. Instead, he sees a fast-talking country bug zipping out of the
jar and flying toward him wearing an old leather airman’s cap and goggles.
“Are you crazy or somethin’? You almost killed Junebug!” Junebug says.
Lil’ Chucky Charley, frightened, says, “What...Who are you?”
Junebug chuckles, “I’m Junebug! A happy, carefree flying airbug with a built-in navigation system. Yeah, I’m
a sophisticated bug alright!”
As Junebug talks to Lil’ Chucky Charley, his fright turns to calm. Junebug even convinces Charley
to play his favorite game,“High In The Sky,” and try other daring adventures. They eventually find
themselves exhausted, hungry and soon realize that their whole afternoon has passed without eating.
After climbing a pear tree, picking black berries, grapes, and some wild plums, they head toward
Turkey Creek to enjoy their fruit.

Junebug, while resting on Lil’ Chucky Charley’s shoulder, asks him, “What would you like to do for the
rest of your life?”
What a question! Charley has never thought about that. But he knows he loves the blues. He can see
himself playing the guitar with his own band one day, just like his dad. One day, he’d even headline
at famous Apollo Theater in New York City. Yep, that’s just what he wants to do. When Lil’ Chucky
Charley snaps out of his daydream, Junebug is yelling in his ear, “I got an idea! I got an idea!”
Lil’ Chucky Charley smiles when he hears it. It’s like Junebug knows just what he wants without him
saying a word. Together, they dream up Juke Joint Jug, a hoppin’ club hidden away in the grassy fields.
Now, they need a band.
Junebug persuades a group of bug friends he knows to “take a look” inside the magic amber jar — a 6
legged cranefly, a cricket, a green grasshopper, a roach, a red & black spotted ladybug, a locust borer, a gang
of lightning bugs, a doodle bug family, a black boll weevil, and a yellow, black, and green caterpillar. They
enter the jug one by one and each time a magical transformation happens. The bugs emerge as Daddy
Longlegs, Hop-A-Long Grasshopper, Miss Dottie Ladybug, Max the Roach, JJ the Cricket, Mr. Beetle
Dee, Shoofly Gang (Luster, Pops, Watts, Flash, Dim), Doodlebug Baker, Mr. Boll Weevil, and Caterpillar
Queen. The dream is coming true. Oh, how, Lil’ Chucky Charley would love to jam with them. But
as much as he loves the sound of a guitar, he doesn’t know how to play.
After a hot summer Friday night hanging with his bug friends at The Juke Joint Jug, Lil’ Chucky Charley
says, “Goodnight!” Then, he goes inside his house where he discovers his father’s silver-tone guitar
buzzing across the chair. Junebug, in his ear again, dares him, “Pick it up!”
Even though Lil’ Chucky Charley knows he’s not allowed to touch his father’s guitar, he walks over
to it and boldly strums the strings. An electric feeling shoots through him. He picks it up and starts
to play. Really play. This is his first time holding the guitar, but he’s getting down like B.B. King. His
music rocks the shotgun house.
His little sister Nita, mother Mary, and father Slim, come running from the back room to hear who’s
playing that amazing music. To their delight and surprise, it’s Lil’ Charley playing his dad’s guitar.
That was the night the magic finally found Lil’ Chucky Charley...and Lil’ Chucky Charley found a
special part of himself.
As time goes on, Lil’ Chucky Charley decides to take his dream on the road. With the amber jar,
a ukulele guitar his father gave him for Christmas, $3 in his pocket and a one way bus ticket going
North, Lil’ Chucky Charley travels the world magically visiting different destinations with his country
bug friends.
Daddy Longlegs & The Pinehoppers (Spin-off Program)
After being magically transformed into a blues guitarist by Lil’ Charley’s amber jar, JJ the Cricket

jumps at the idea to start a bug band called The Pinehoppers. As their new lead guitarist, he organizes
the group to consist of Hop-A-Long Grasshopper, Miss Dottie Ladybug, and Max the Roach.
JJ the Cricket hears Daddy Longlegs singing in the fields. Feeling a little intimidated by his Otis
Redding-like soulful voice, JJ the Cricket decides it’s better for his own success to keep Daddy
Longlegs’ talent undiscovered.
With the help of his road manager, Mr. Beetle Dee, and his groupie bug cronies called the Shoofly
Gang (Luster, Dim, Flash, Pops, and Watts), JJ the Cricket is determined to remain the “star bug” in
this ‘Mean Old Bug’s World’. He hires Daddy Longlegs as his personal errand bug so he can constantly
remind him who’s in charge.
As the group travels throughout the South performing at Ugly Bug Balls, a string of good fortune and
a trip to Memphis change the life of Daddy Longlegs forever. After he sings ‘These Legs Of Mine,’ Mr.
Beetle Dee signs him on the spot. The lightning bugs get busy lighting up his name on the marquee.
Daddy Longlegs is terrified, but faces his fears of success and flying, then decides it’s time to spread
his wings. All the other winged bugs fly off with Daddy Longlegs in celebration.
JJ the Cricket is the only bug left grounded, dragging his ego and guitar behind him.

1.1 - LIL’ CHUCKY CHARLEY & HIS COUNTRY BUG FRIENDS PROGRAM
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
1. Lil’ Chucky Charley is an 8 year old boy who lives in a little shotgun house in the country side of
Wilkinson County, Georgia (1957). The oldest of 3 siblings (1 brother, 2 sisters) born to Mother
Mary and Charlie aka Slim.
He enjoys shooting marbles, swimming, climbing pecan and black walnut trees, picking pears,
mulberries, black berries, wild plums and grapes. His favorite color is blue like the sky and a faded
pair of overalls with a missing medal button.
Throw in a pair of worn-out army boots or bare feet, patchy jeans or wool Knickers, or an oversized,
dark blue with pinstripe old man’s suit and his ensemble is complete for any singing recital.
In school, Lil’ Chucky Charley is a natural history enthusiast. He often day dreams about life outside
of his school books and chores of rounding up pigs, catching chickens, and chopping wood. Little
Charley desires to travel the world like Huckleberry Finn. His guitar and bug friends are an escape
from reality to explore his adventures.
2. Junebug is a fast talking country bug, born in the Deep South with a whole lot of southern hospitality.
A happy, carefree flying airmen (bug) that’s full of energy with a built-in navigation system.
He considers himself to be a winged air circus performer with great acrobatic skills perfect for taking
Lil’ Chucky Charley on any daring adventure.
3. Daddy Longlegs is a 6 legged Georgia bug (Cranefly) and harvestman who works all day in the field
singing old spiritual songs. He has a soulful voice with a whine and plays a mean Jew’s (Jaw) Harp.
He believes his name will be in lights someday!
Daddy Longlegs sings with a bug group that travels throughout the country performing at Ugly Bug
Balls. The group consists of JJ the Cricket (4) who plays the lead guitar; Hop-A-Long Grasshopper
(5) who plays the upright bass; Max the Roach (6) who plays the drums; and Miss Dottie Ladybug (7)
who stands in with the group as a solo performer from time to time!
7. Mr. Beetle Dee is a charismatic long-horned beetle (locust borer) that speaks with a French Creole
accent. He mimics a wasp lifestyle during the day, drinks nectar, and stays out all night hanging with
his “lightning bugs” cronies called the Shoofly Gang (Watts, Flash, Luster, Dim, Pops).
They love being in the limelight or “literally” in Lil’ Chucky Charley’s Juke Jug.
As the road manager for Daddy Longlegs & The Pinehoppers™, Mr. Beetle Dee is an itinerary bug
with very few choice words that he prefers to sing to make his point. One-liners like “Be Here!”,
“Be Busy!”, “Be Gone!”

8. Doodlebug Baker is a family bug with a sickly wife and 4 cute little doodlebugs. The youngest 2
are identical twins that constantly seek attention.
The Doodlebug family enjoys yams and sweet potatoes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
When it rains outside, they get mood swings and bury themselves deeper in the sand. They can only
be persuaded to come out when hearing sweet melodies sung to them and the sun is shining.
9. Mr. Boll Weevil is a black traveling bug out of Mexico who journeys all over the country trying to
find a new home for his family.
With his Mexican guitar and huge appetite for cotton buds, Mr. Bo Weevil takes his family through
the State of Texas, decides to pay a visit to Times Square in NYC, passes through The Western Plain
of Nebraska, and then finally hops a train leaving Memphis, Tennessee.
Where he stays depends on what crop Ole’ Man Charlie has planted.
