Executive Summary
The National Aboriginal Diabetes Association (NADA)
receives funding from Health Canada - First Nations
and Inuit Health. The Contribution Agreement spans
three years, from 2011 – 2014 and is supported by a
three year Work Plan.
NADA’s 2013 – 2014 Annual Report highlights the
accomplishments and challenges realized during the
third and final year of the current Contribution
Agreement.
As mentioned earlier, NADA is under a three (3) year
funding agreement which is a first for the organization.
This funding approach facilitates staff retention,
program continuity, partnership building and working
collaboratively over the long haul, project
development, such as increasing electronic distribution
of significant and relevant diabetes resources to
Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (ADI) workers, advocacy,
networking and raising the profile of diabetes and First
Nations and Inuit peoples at the forefront of the health
agenda. Project activity can resume on a continuum
rather than stop and go as in previous years.
Additionally, NADA received support from Health
Canada to coordinate and host the 7th National
Aboriginal Diabetes Conference and Diabetes Strategic
Planning Session – Celebrating Success: Building
Healthier Pathways. This conference provided
professional development and continuing education to
ADI workers from across Canada who deliver diabetes
prevention and management programming in First
Nation and Inuit communities. Continuing education
and professional development series, such as the 7th
National Diabetes conference have been identified as
instrumental in retaining these workers and
maintaining their skill levels and competencies.
During the conference, a special diabetes strategic
planning session engaged ADI workers and other
conference participants to provide wide-ranging
feedback on successful approaches and impacts of
diabetes and health promotion programming for First
Nations and Inuit as well as strategies to enhance
future programming.
The conference planning, coordination and hosting
was a gigantic undertaking that consumed several
months of time, skill and energy from NADA staff. As
such, some work plan activities were diminished.
This report includes references to work plan activity
and outcomes, partnerships, conference and strategic
planning evaluation and reporting activity, updated
technology, and other activities, such as Just Move It
and the NADA Audited Financial Statements.

Introduction to NADA’s Work Plan, 2011 – 2014
Work Plan Goals, Objectives and Activities
NADA’s Work Plan included goals, objectives, activities and time
frames with cost centres for each activity.
Some activities, such as the NADA Newsletter and website, are
ongoing activities that span the 3 – year
Contribution Agreement (CA) while others, such as National
Aboriginal Diabetes Awareness Day (NADA-D) are highlighted in
the first year only. NADA believes that NADA-D is too important
and continues to support this event each year.
This report, Annual Report 2013 – 2014, will focus on the goals,
objectives, activities and outcomes of the NADA Work Plan for
year 3.

Director, Anita Ducharme by phone at (204) 927-1224 or by email

PROFILE OF THE CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS:
•
•
•
•
•
Participants had, on average, over 8 years of experience in both in the
diabetes prevention field and with their current employers
Most participants were from Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and the
Atlantic Region (84.6% collectively)
The majority of participants had their own personal experiences with
diabetes, either as individuals with this disease, with family members with
diabetes, or both
Almost three-quarters of these participants have had formal training or
relevant education in the field; most ADI workers had training or education
related to this field
The most frequent forms of training or education included: ADI training,
nursing degrees or certification, Community Diabetes Prevention training, or
degrees in Dietetics or Nutrition

Conference,

Evaluating The Conference As A Whole:
Virtually all participants attended the conference to achieve the following objectives:
•
•
•
•
•
To hear about interesting diabetes prevention programs in other areas
To improve their diabetes prevention skills
To gain more knowledge about diabetes and its effects
To learn how to manage their diabetes and/or that of a relative or friend, if applicable
To network with colleagues in the field or to make new connections
All, or virtually all, participants achieved their objectives
It is apparent that this conference has been very successful from a number of perspectives:
•
It attracted a large number of participants from many organizations and disciplines
•
It attracted the support of many sponsors and volunteers from a broad range of sectors
•
It attracted participants from almost every province
•
It met participants’ objectives for attending the conference
•
Participants generally reported being very satisfied with their experiences at the conference, including
feeling that it was a good use of their time
•
There were relatively few suggestions for improving the conference, and few systemic issues emerged
•
Most, if not all, participants found:
•
o
That each session they attended provided them with new ideas and information
o
That they will be able to apply what they have learned
o
That their presenters were knowledgeable or very knowledgeable about their topics
o
That they picked-up, and will be able to apply to their work, at least one new thing from each
session they attended
As a result of all of these factors, they are generally very likely to attend future NADA conferences, and to
recommend that their colleagues do the same

Session Report
Strategic planning workbook developed and disseminated to ADI conference participants prior
to conference date
The strategic planning process associated with NADA’s 7th National Aboriginal Conference and
Strategic Planning Session provided participants with the opportunity to reflect on and share
their experiences and perspectives on diabetes and community health. The feedback and
results from the face-to-face consultations and the engagement survey were collected and are
described in this report. This feedback was provided by conference participants, Aboriginal
health directors, Chiefs, members of Tribal Councils, community workers, and government
partners. The aim of the strategic planning process was to:
•
•
•
•
Provide a forum for sharing community knowledge; successes; best practices;
challenges; and opportunities
Collect community feedback and develop a report that will influence future ADI
programming
Develop and implement an online survey immediately following the session to capture
valuable feedback from community workers and others who were unable to attend the
session, or did not have the opportunity to share their community stories
Develop a report for wide distribution that will support future Aboriginal diabetes and
health programming
Ten breakout sessions were facilitated the morning of November 28th. Each session involved
approximately 20 to 25 people, and was assigned a facilitator and note-taker. Sessions were
approximately 45 minutes in duration. Participants were asked to attend two sessions during
the morning, with a break between each. Once the first session was completed they rotated to
a new session where the process was repeated. The sessions were designed to gather
maximum input from all participants to help develop the core content of the strategic planning
and on-line survey report.
Each group focused on a different theme. These included:
•
Living well with diabetes
National Aboriginal Diabetes Association, Inc.
Page 41
Strategic Planning session
continued
•
•
•
•
From awareness to change
Healthy communities
Working together
Mental health and emotional support
Each group had at least two facilitators; one to moderate the discussions and one or two to
take notes. The online process mirrored that of the group process, except that people
completing the process online had the opportunity to respond to all five themes, while the
people in the group process could focus on one or two. In the end approximately 85 people
participated in the online process. The results of combining the content from both processes
yielded over 80 typed pages of content.
