Speakers
Julian McMahon
Julian McMahon is a barrister at the Victorian Bar. He works in criminal law. In
recent years he has become known for working on cases involving the death
penalty, including the Bali 9 cases of Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan
executed in Indonesia in April 2015. Julian is currently on the Boards of Jesuit
Social Services, and Reprieve Australia (an anti-death penalty organisation).
Jo Doherty
Jo Doherty, Best Practice Coordinator at Elizabeth Morgan House Aboriginal
Women’s Services, started off on a very different path as a biologist working
to ‘save the frogs’ at the Amphibian Research Centre. Jo describes her life as a
‘journey unexpected’, leading her to working for the peak Victorian Aboriginal
Women’s body as a specialist high risk Family Violence Worker responding to
the needs of women and children and assisting them to navigate the justice
and crisis systems.
Darren Side
Darren Side is the Indigenous Education Coordinator and a senior teacher at
Xavier College. Darren has been Principal of two remote Aboriginal schools in
the Kimberley. His work in Aboriginal communities and schools has seen him
develop and implement successful educational programs dedicated to
promoting Aboriginal literacy and numeracy through life skills programs.
