 CAREER COACH FACILITATOR Aboriginal Youth Initiative Edmonton and Calgary Regions CAREERS: The Next Generation is a unique, non-­‐profit organization raising youth awareness of career options and helping students earn while they learn through internship. We partner with government, educators, communities, industry, parents and students to introduce youth to rewarding careers and develop the skilled workers of the future. In this role, you will serve as a mentor for Aboriginal youth considering or enrolled in CAREERS: The Next Generation’s Aboriginal Youth Initiative. Reporting to the Director, Aboriginal Initiatives you will be part of assigned regional field teams to assist Aboriginal youth with workplace entry preparation, transition for school-­‐to-­‐work, and help to achieve success in workplace explorations. You will be integral to establishing and continuing the relationship between the Aboriginal youth, school, employer, community resource agencies, parents/guardians and Elders. Your responsibilities will include: • Ensure smooth transition of all Aboriginal youth, aged 16 to 21, who are entering a CAREERS internship, facilitate a positive work experience and assist youth to achieve workplace success. • Provide advocacy and support to Aboriginal youth, school personnel, employers and parents/guardians to foster school-­‐to-­‐work success and enable an appropriate fit into a workplace internship. • Assist in recruiting Aboriginal youth and matching them with appropriate workplace internships. • Gain a sound understanding of the expectations of the worksite as it pertains to hours of work, work assignment, attendance, etc. and communicate those to participating youth. • Mentor participating youth. • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with diverse stakeholders; including parents, schools, educators, employers, employer associations and other partners. • Identify real and potential barriers, and connect with other community organizations and programs on mentorship, business/community facilitation etc. to provide outreach support and advice to students on ways/means to overcome those barriers. • Regularly monitor internships, seeking information from youth and Employers in the program to identify issues, problems, outcomes and trends. As Career Coach Facilitator, you will have the following attributes: • Degree, diploma, certificate or credential in education, community development, social work, career counseling, career development or Aboriginal relations. • Proven experience working with Aboriginal youth, life skills coaching, career counseling, education settings, in business or industry, or supporting youth. • Active participation in Aboriginal community, volunteer or service organizations would be an asset. •

Exceptional interpersonal, communication skills, conflict resolution and motivational skills. In-­‐depth knowledge of the industry and workplace dynamics to lend credibility in the eyes of the Employer, youth, school, community supports, and Aboriginal communities. An understanding of the value of the multiplicity of social services available in the community to support students at risk of not achieving internship success. Strong presentation skills and the ability to relate to a varied audience. Ability to work independently within a team environment. Proven conflict management, negotiation and mediation skills. Demonstrated ability to take initiative and follow through on actions. Knowledge of youth’s language and culture is preferred. Valid Class 5 Drivers License and a reliable vehicle with business use insurance. Incident free Police Information Check and Child Welfare Check. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys travelling, and doesn’t mind putting in some long days. A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle are required.
