Our Story
Possibility The word invokes tingles of optimism. The Sitka Center rings with possibility now as
.
much as it did 40 years ago when it was founded. This is due, in part, to some of the founding principles that
have endured over the decades and kept the organization simple:
•
•
•
Sitka Center for
Art and Ecology
•
was founded on
May 8, 1970
•
as the Neskowin
Coast Foundation
•
Place-based ~
Sitka’s spirit is captured by the location we occupy
Inclusive ~
people with all levels of knowledge are welcome
Connected ~ we work together with our community
to brighten the world
Long-term Focus ~
our plans incorporate 7th generation thinking
Support Artists ~ we want artists to benefit from
our programs, financially and intellectually
Non-institutional ~ we give people permission
to create without a prescribed structure
At its core, Sitka strives to be a place that provides support
for artists at all levels of experience and proficiency. Our
attitude of acceptance and warm welcome extends across
generations and experience levels. You can feel it when
you walk on our campus.
We are also a place where ideas expand. When you spend
time at the Sitka Center, your ideas unfold through
engagement with the place. An “improvisatory nature”
is at the heart of Sitka, where creative acts take shape
in nature, through human intention, and through the
interplay of creative people and their surroundings.
This year, as we celebrate our 40th birthday, we are
reflecting upon the cumulative effort that has created
this singular organization. At the same time, we are
setting the groundwork for the important work that has
yet to be done.
The workshops we have prepared this year cross a range
of disciplines, purposefully meant to inspire you with
Sitka Center is
offering more than possibility. Whether you have a burning vision that
103 workshops
yearns for realization, a desire to hone your skills, or
in 2010
simply think it would be fun to learn a new skill, we
offer training, space, and a community of supporters
for you. Show up as your authentic self, ready to learn,
ready to participate, and ready to contribute all that
you have to offer the world!

When I was eleven years old, I was terrified by the
imminent probability of nuclear war. I believed that
my love of rivers and my ability as a fisherman was
such that if only I could have a single day alone with
the presidents of Russia (then the USSR) and
America and take them fishing on a beautiful river,
that surely we three could solve the problems and
end the nightmare. They never gave me the chance,
perhaps because I never asked them.
When I was twenty-seven, Jane and I
imagined Sitka. I felt an overwhelming need to live
in a beautiful seminal place that would guide my
life and my art.
We realized that such a place might not
be peopled with artists or biologists or musicians,
the sort with whom we would like to surround
our family and ourselves. My life was made up of
how things meshed together. How dirt and water,
animals and sounds, and light and color formed a
Gordian knot. If Jane and I or a group of people in
collaboration could interpret such a place, the effect
could be altering.
After forty years I still believe that, and I
know there will be people who also believe that in
another forty or eighty years. If the structures of
thought and intent inherent at Sitka today have been
kept vital over that forty or eighty years, then there
will be a place for those who believe the basic premises of how the study of natural structures and art
can modify and change the perceptions of the world.
The idea behind Sitka is simple and basic.
What we have had here from the beginning is a
presence, an adjustable way of confronting ideas
through time and space in a special land which
instructs people to see with greater clarity and to give
back their perceptions. The thousands of people who
have chosen to participate in Sitka are proof that
optimism is absolutely mandatory. No one has to ask.

Our Story
www.sitkacenter.org
The Sitka Center is a creative
community that cares about artists and cares about nature.
Many people experience Sitka through our Workshop
Program that brings talented instructors from around the
world to teach people who want to enhance their ability
for expression. Others experience Sitka through viewing
and purchasing art at our annual Art Invitational, a chance
to see more than 500 diverse creations from some of the
Northwest’s top artists. A select group of artists, writers,
and musicians get to experience Sitka as an Artist-in-Residence, spending as long as 4 months
in deep interaction with our environment at Cascade Head. This year we are offering an extra event:
a 40th year celebration. One of our favorite things about Sitka is that it attracts incredible people.
We hope this celebration is the ultimate reflection of that attraction, bringing people from across the globe
and from across Sitka’s history to celebrate art, nature, and the relationship we have with both.
Place
The Center is located just north of Lincoln City on the Oregon coast and sits within breathtaking view of the
Pacific Ocean. It is surrounded by an array of protected lands, including a Nature Conservancy Preserve, the
Cascade Head Experimental Forest, the Salmon River estuary, a United Nations Biosphere Reserve, and the only
Scenic Research Area in the world. Stepping onto the campus, it is almost impossible not to notice a slowing of
pace and a widening of vision. Rooted in its mission and sheltered beneath the branches of its namesake Sitka
Spruce, the Center has grown into an epicenter of creative and intellectual activity. People come from all over the
world to experience the site while learning in workshops or pursuing individual creative or intellectual projects
during residencies.
Programs
Members

contribute 19%
of Sitka’s budget.
Sitka has
3 full-time staff
3 part-time staff
and over 100
volunteers.
In 2009,
849 people took
a workshop at
Sitka.
Sitka Center’s activities are focused in two areas. The Center’s Workshop Program offers more than 100 handson workshops each year. Courses offer one- to five-day intensive explorations for individuals of all ages, abilities,
and backgrounds, teaching the tools and techniques of the medium. The Workshop Program at the Sitka Center
is the largest of its kind in Oregon, and the instructors are leaders in their field of study.
The Residency Program has provided 180 artists, writers, and natural science scholars the opportunity to conduct
their own work while deeply engaging with the environment of Cascade Head. Up to six residents at a time, usually
from different disciplines and stages in their careers, live and work on campus for one to four months free of
charge. The Residency Program fosters cross-disciplinary creative and intellectual work for residents individually
and collectively. Our residents, many of whom are internationally respected and prize-winning, share their
work with the local community through presentations,
workshops, and service projects.

Planning Tips
Traveling
to Sitka Center
Sitka Center is located on the Oregon
coast just north of Lincoln City.
56605 Sitka Drive, Otis • (541) 994-5485
From Portland, Salem and Eugene
From Portland or Eugene, take I-5 to Salem,
then Highway 22 to Highway 18, finally
turning north onto Highway 101. Travel
about one mile to the junction of Highway
101 and Three Rocks Road. You’ll see blue
signs for Sitka Center at the junction, turn
left.
* Travel west toward the ocean on Three
Rocks Road North. Drive 2.3 miles, to a “Y”
in the road. Turn right on Savage Road. Go
up the hill and take the first right, on Ridge
Road. Watch for the blue Sitka Center signs.
Keep following the road around and turn left
into the parking area. If stairs are a problem,
please go up Sitka Drive near the red fire
hydrant, proceed up the steep drive and drop
off materials or passengers at that level. If you
need to remain in that spot, please contact the
office in advance.

Housing, Parking, Pets, What to Bring
Lodging Options
There is no student housing, RV parking, or
camping available at Sitka but there are several
options nearby. See our Catalog Sponsors (p. 2223) and our website (www.sitkacenter.org) for a list
of lodging options in Lincoln City and Neskowin
(both within a 15 minute drive), as well as lodging
within walking distance at Cascade Head.
Lunch
Bring a sack lunch and food for the day.
Refrigerators are provided for lunches. The
nearest place to buy lunch is the Otis Café (10
minutes) or a 15-minute drive to Lincoln City.
Coffee and tea are provided. Sodas and snacks
are available for purchase.
Pets
28
Residents of the surrounding Cascade Head
Ranch enjoy the beauty and wildlife of the
pristine area. Pets are not allowed while attending
workshops.
Parking
Sitka sits on 2/3 acres, with private residences
nearby. Parking at the Sitka Center is very limited.
Please park only in designated Sitka parking
areas as we value our good relationship with our
neighbors. Should Sitka’s lot be full, overflow
parking is available at Knight’s Park, which is a
10-15 minute walk from Sitka. If you have special
access needs, please call ahead to alert us. Two
parking spaces are available onsite for disabled
patrons.
Material Lists
Some instructors expect participants to bring
materials with them. Material lists are posted
at www.sitkacenter.org. We suggest you check
the list before registering for a class. Upon
registration, a material list will be sent to you.
If you have questions about items on the list
contact Sitka or your local art supplier. If you
are required to bring art supplies, bring them in
a carrying container.
Clothing
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. There
is a short walk, less than a city block, from the
parking lot to the studios. A jacket/raincoat is
nice to have if it’s chilly or raining. If your class is
outdoors, dress in layers so you can warm up and
cool down as needed. This is also helpful if you
choose to indulge in a walk or hike in the area.
