September 9 News from the Nest 2016-17
Weekly News from the Office of Bentwood Elementary ● September 9, 2016
Dear Bentwood Parents and Students:
September Greetings! This week has been hot, muggy, wet … and all of this creates a bit of school drama,
MOST especially in the parking lot at arrival and dismissal. Do you recall seeing the movie “Mr. Mom” with
Michael Keaton. There was a line in the movie where he was responsible for teaching the other stay at home
parents how the school parking lot worked … and I wish I had that today as a tutorial! Since I don’t, my funny
bone wants to go with the most current thing at my fingertips … hoping you think it’s as funny as I do!
In all seriousness, the flow for our parking lot at arrival and dismissal was created with safety of students AND staff in mind. When
any one parents chooses not to go with the flow, it messes things up! Specifically on rainy, snowy, cold days every parent will
have to pull forward as far as possible to drop off kids, and they might get a few raindrops on their heads as they head under the
awning. They will survive! Those of us out there for 20 minutes of KS weather can attest that it is survivable! The same is true on
the west side, to keep traffic off of Quivira Street, all drivers must pull all the way forward! We thank you for reading this PSA!
Do you know about this weekend’s Old Settler’s activities? I have noticed over the years that folks who live and work in Overland
Park don’t always know about things that transpire in nearby Olathe. Old Settler’s, a tradition since 1898, fills downtown Olathe
with nationally recognized musical entertainment, carnival rides, Kansas' largest parade, antique auto show, arts and crafts, great
food from local non-profit organizations, and much, much more. The Saturday parade is the longest parade in Kansas. Street.
There is FREE entertainment and admission to Old Settler’s is FREE, although the commercial vendors, crafts, and carnival
components all have meager fees attached. The Olathe Old Settler’s hours are: Fri (9/9) 10am-11pm, Sat (9/10) 9am-11pm, with
the Parade Saturday beginning at 10am. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy your weekend!
Educationally yours,
Don’t forget to stop in and check out the BENTWOOD GARAGE SALE on
Sat. between 8am—2pm. We have had some eager customers already
interested in beating you to the bargains on Friday during the school day!

What is Walking Wednesday ?
The Bentwood Elementary Walking Wednesday Campaign encourages students and parents to walk or
bike to school. Our program promotes healthy habits, reduces traffic congestion, boosts our sense of
community, and encourages our cities to provide safe routes to school. Please plan on walking or biking
with your student on September 14, 21, 28 & October 5. Students who participate in Walking Wednesdays
on these dates will receive a small incentive upon arriving at school.
Noah’s Bandage Project
Did you know that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month? Please
help us spread awareness and collect fun, colorful bandages for kids that need
them by participating in our Band-Aid drive. By bringing in a box of fun bandages, you are:

Helping supply bandages to kids across the city (and beyond)

Supporting a great cause started by a great young boy,

Bringing smiles to literally thousands of kids!
There will be a Band-Aid collection station set up at the school entrance
every morning from Sept 12 – 16th.

Counselor’s Corner
A great resource for children and parents is the Olathe School District’s HELP Clinic,
which offers short-term counseling (up to six sessions) for students and families. The
Clinic is staffed by professional counselors, school psychologists, and social workers
who also work in a school setting in the Olathe district. I will highlight other services
the HELP Clinic offers in future newsletters, but if you are interested in a brochure
describing these services in detail, please contact me at 780-7320 or
[email protected].
You may also access a PDF of the brochure online at http://www.olatheschools.com/

News From the Nurse
During the month of September, Vision Screening will be performed on students in
Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade and students new to the Olathe District. Parents will
be contacted of students who do not pass the vision screening. Please feel free to
contact our school nurse with any questions. Also, if your student wears glasses or
contacts please be sure they are wearing them to school!
Please view an attached parent letter and Johnson County Heath Department
exclusion recommendations.
