The California Trail Science Olympiad team participated in the Regional Tournament on Saturday, February 27th. Thirty middle school teams from the northeast
region traveled to Johnson County Community College for this day-long event. Our
15 team members competed in 23 science events throughout the day, ranging
from Bottle Rockets, to Anatomy, to Crime Busters. At the awards ceremony, California Trail placed 1st in 13 events, 2nd in 5 events, and 3rd in 2 events. They also
placed 1st overall as a team. Their individual and team accomplishments were
outstanding! This placement qualifies them to compete in the State Tournament
held at Wichita State University on April 2nd. Great job, science bulldogs!

MATH COUNTS EASTERN REGIONAL COMPETITION
Congratulations to the California Trail Math Counts team. They
placed 4th at the regional competition on February 2nd at the
Jewish Community Center. Their 4th place finish qualified the
team of Khushi Kohli, Manas Madhira, Zoe Kulphongpatana, and
Samuel Liu to attend the state Math Counts competition held in
Topeka on March 5th. In the individual competition, Khushi Kohli
placed 5th out of over 200 competitors. Again Congratulations to
the Math Counts team and Khushi for a successful competition.

A MESSAGE FROM MIKE WILEY
Parental Involvement at CT
As we started the school year, a group of parents along with faculty member Heather Rice and myself initiated the formation of
a group we came to call Bulldog Backers. Through discussion and much research, it was determined that the group would
function as a Parent Teacher Organization and officers were determined. The officers are President Sonja Butler,
Vice President Amy Warner-Koch, Treasurer Kelly Clayton and Secretary Lynn Pannell.
The mission of Bulldog Backers is “To build community, support traditions and expand opportunities for CTMS students and
staff.” Part of reaching this mission, involves raising funds. In efforts to build community and raise funds, the group
sponsored dining out opportunities at Jason’s Deli and Panera along with an outing over winter break to B&B Cinema. The
group has organized concessions for home events and raised funds through a membership drive. Bulldog Backers also
organized and provided food for staff at parent teacher conferences and in recognition of American Education Week.
Upcoming events include many activities with the March 3 night basketball game at CT, at 5:30. There is also a family outing
planned for March 4 at Cosmic Jump and Goodbye Breakfast for our 8 th graders on May 19, so make sure to mark your
calendars!
In efforts to support traditions and expand opportunities for CTMS students and staff, the Bulldog Backers are currently
exploring the possibility of an outdoor learning space in coordination with a grant, possibilities to inspire students within the
school, and ways to support offsite learning through field trips.

Parents, if you have not visited Common Sense Media
(www.commonsensemedia.org), I would invite you to browse
the parent section. Their mission is to rate media, educate,
and advocate for kids, families, and schools. Olathe Public
Schools chose to use many of their free materials when
building lessons for our district-wide Digital Citizenship Day
upon deploying iPads. As one of their Certified Educators, I ran
across this great video (3:41), entitled, “Teens and Tech: The
New Landscape.”

Starting Tuesday March 1, students select titles they would like to put on their March Madness Book
Bracket. Brackets will be due to Mrs. Mateer by March 9, in the library. Those students submitting
brackets will get to vote throughout the month of March during Bulldog Time, to see which book title
Dominates for CT readers! Prizes WILL be awarded, depending on number of participants.

CT STUDENTS TAKE A TRIP FOR STATE CHOIR
Thirteen students from California Trail were selected to participate in State Choir for the Music Educators Convention on February
26. They met at CT at 3:50AM and traveled by school bus to the Century II Convention Hall in Wichita. They rehearsed all day with
specially selected clinicians and had an awesome concert at 5PM.
Mrs. Pearson said, “These students worked hard to learn their music and are fantastic singers! I am proud that they represented CT
so well at our State-wide concert.”

HOME READINESS KIT
Are you prepared for a storm or blizzard? Have a household readiness kit in the event
of any unexpected disruption to services. This kit should contain all the supplies you
would need to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours for each family member. Store the
supplies in easy-to-carry containers such as a backpack or duffel bag.
INCLUDE:
 A supply of water (one gallon per person per day). Store water in sealed,
unbreakable containers. Identify the storage date and replace every six months.
 A supply of non-perishable packaged or canned food and a non-electric can
opener.
 A change of clothing, rain gear and sturdy shoes/boots.
 Blankets or sleeping bags.
 A first aid kit and prescription medications.
 An extra pair of glasses.
 A battery-powered radio, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries.
 Credit cards and cash.
 An extra set of car keys.
 A list of family physicians.
 A list of important family information; the style and serial number of medical devices such as pacemakers. Special items
for infants, elderly or disabled family members.
 A full tank of gas per car.
 Alternative cooking and heating sources.
STATE GEOGRAPHY BEE
California Trail Geography Bee Winner, Manas Madhira
has qualified to compete in the state level competition
of the National Geographic Bee. The Kansas State Bee
will be held Friday, April 1, 2016.
One champion from each state and territory will advance to the national competition, which will be held
May 22-25 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. Transportation and accommodations for the Washington, D.C. trip are provided for
each state champion. We wish Manas much success in
the Kansas State Bee.
