IT’S A LIBRARY THING
During SOL testing we are closed if tests are being administered in the library that day. HOWEVER, we are
always open during homeroom. Many students claim they can never return their overdue library books while
testing, but this is not true. If the student arrives too late for homeroom, they can always leave their book in the library
mailbox or give them to the office aide.
Overdue notices will be sent out more often as we near the end of school so students can keep up with their books and
debts. Remember, elementary debts are still on your child's account. These do not go away!
Several fun events are planned for the end of the year, but your child may not be able to participate if they have debts. Don’t
wait until the last minute to take care of them – library, cafeteria, gym, and textbooks. Have your child check their account
on Destiny. It will show overdue books and ALL fines, not just the library.
Café Book (7th & 8th grade) will end the program by voting for their favorite book and enjoying a field trip and pizza to the
Snow Library in May. Permission slips will be sent home soon.
Summer reading is important to prevent a slide in reading level. The suggested summer reading lists will be posted on our
website before the end of school. This will include the books for our in-house reading program, Spotsy Reads. The public
library often has a summer reading program that is lots of fun and gives incentives for reading.

The last day for book checkout will be Friday, May 27th.
All library books will be due no later than Friday, June 3rd.

beginning of each new school year.

3:00pm on June 16th.
Medication can not be sent home with the student.

homeroom teachers name on
the envelope.
The top homeroom in each grade level will be
rewarded each 9-week grading period.

Yearbooks can be purchased for $30 in the
Library during homeroom. You still have
time to reserve your copy before they
arrive. After May 20th, you may
purchase a yearbook with cash only.
No checks will be accepted.
Spring Pictures
Pictures were taken on March 8th & 9th.
Students will be bringing home their
spring portraits to be previewed. You
need to return them or pay for the portraits once you have decided. They can be
paid for online by a credit card but you
need to bring in the confirmation number
on the order so your student will be removed from the debt list. They can also
be purchased at school.
CITIZENSHIP AWARD
The Spotsylvania Middle School Citizenship Award is given to students whose contributions to our SMS
community are recognized through positive attitudes and genuine support of their fellow students. These
students have shown themselves to be respectful, responsible, and productive.

Spotsylvania Middle School
SMS Athletic Department is hosting an Athletic Physical Night for any middle or high school
students who needs a sports physical for the 2016-2017 athletic seasons. It is on a “first come, first
serve” basis. Local physicians and physician assistants, and nurse practitioners (about 10-15 will be
on site) are donating their time for this fundraising event. All proceeds will go toward the SMS
Athletic Department.
Please use the gym side entrance.

DEBATE TEAM
The Bulldogs competed in the most recent Spotsylvania County Middle School Debate League
tournament held at Ronald Reagan Middle School in Prince William County. The SMS Debate Team
continued to make significant improvement by finishing in second place overall. SMS had three teams who
were undefeated: Gabe Sides & Walker Berndt, Emily Catlett & Makenna Billig and Zach Ellia & A.J.
Ernandez. The Bulldogs will enter five teams in the final tournament which is called the “The Great Debate” at
Ni River Middle School on April 30th.
FRENCH News
A French Afternoon
5 students from SMS attended “Un Après-midi
Français” (A French Afternoon) on Saturday,
April 16 at Chancellor High School : Zach Ellia, Anna
Stevens, Charlotte Zink and Sara & Caitlyn Smith. They
enjoyed making Belgian waffles, competing in French
Trivia, Learning about Pokeman, playing French board
games and more! Also, they got to meet and talk to the
students taking French in local high schools.
French Club
Students researched famous French such as Napoleon
Bonaparte, Charles de Gaulle, Vincent Van Gogh and
othere. They presented their Power Points during French
club. Journey Cole brought some French cheese,
croissants and Perrier—yum! Our last meeting will be
on Wednesday, May 18. We will be playing pétanque!

Hello Bulldog Parents from Your PTO
We want to take this opportunity to thank you ALL for helping us make our annual
Bulldog BINGO night such a huge success! Special thanks to Kelly Olson, Heidi
Davis, Lynette Salvary, and Jenny Lossing for all the work they put into getting such
awesome prize donations, and to Tracy Lowman for making and printing our programs
for the event. It’s parents like you all who make these events run super smoothly and
enjoyable for everyone!
Teacher appreciation week is right around the corner. We need parents to help show
the love by donating desserts for the Staff Dessert Bar on Thursday, May 5. Please
look out for the sign up or contact us at [email protected]. Please consider
sending in a donation to help the teachers feel special!
We are currently looking for positions for the PTO board next year, specifically Vice
President, Treasurer, and Fundraiser Chair and Co-Chair Persons. If you would be
interested in more information about any open positions for next year please email us
at [email protected]. Donating your time goes a long way to help our school,
teachers, and students, so please consider helping out in this manner. We truly
appreciate our Bulldog parents!
