Overview
On November 12th, 2013, the nation started a new and positive conversation
about birth control and all that it makes possible. We asked high-profile
leaders in media and a variety of other sectors—and women and men
everywhere—to speak up and give a shout out for birth control by using the
hashtag #ThxBirthControl on November 12th and throughout the week.
Thousands of individuals and organizations joined in by tweeting, writing
Facebook messages, blogging, creating and sharing original content, and
finding other creative ways to help us turn up the volume and turn down the
controversy about contraception.
In a recent survey, 55% of sexually active women ages 18-22 said that they’d
feel more comfortable using contraception if more people talked about it in
a positive way. After all, if you can’t talk about it, how do you know if you’re
using it right? At present, half of all pregnancies are described by women
themselves as unplanned. “Thanks, Birth Control” helped bring many new
voices into the conversation and helped get a positive message out about
what birth control makes possible.
