One, unbeknownst to him, a large gathering of his friends and colleagues from VFW Post 9182 came to the church to witness him receiving the VFW Post 9182 Commanders Medal, for his efforts, enthusiasm, dedication and all the hard work he has put in the Katy Veterans Memorial Museum since 1996. Second, was that were two Texas A&M Cadets who were there to present him with something he should have received almost 70 years ago. In 1944, WWII was still raging around the globe, the United States itself was locked in heated battles around the world. As in many countries, the U.S. was having a tough time as well, things like flour, sugar, gasoline, leather, metal and Norris Miertschin receives Texas A&M Senior boots other items were rationed or not at a ceremony in old town Katy. available at all. As a firefighter, it’s Dan Rutledge’s job to save lives, but it’s more than a job for him. It’s his calling, and his mind and body are always ready to answer that calling, even when he’s not on duty. That is exactly what happened on Monday, June 10, 2013, as Glenda Kruger, City of Katy resident, (pictured second from left) was exiting the worship center at First Baptist Church to teach a kindergarten class at Vacation Bible School, Glenda suddenly collapsed in the lobby and stopped breathing and had no pulse. As if by divine intervention, a few feet away stood an experienced, well-trained Houston firefighter, Senior Captain Dan Rutledge. Dan immediately jumped into action and began performing CPR and using the automatic external defibrillator located nearby. Due to Captain Rutledge’s quick action and knowledge, Glenda’s life was saved. Because CPR was started within the first few minutes of Glenda’s collapse, she suffered no brain or organ damage. Glenda considers Dan Rutledge to be her guardian angel sent by God to save her, and for that he will forever be a hero in her eyes. The Highlanders had only allowed a total 177 yards last week in their win over Hightower. But they hadn’t played the duo of Huddleston and Doiron at quarterback, running backs Rodney Anderson and Kyle Porter, and a rock solid defensive and offensive line that don’t get the credit they deserve. The scoring in The Woodlands – Katy game was a repeat performance of the previous two. The Tigers took control in the first and second quarters chalking up another win before the game was over. The Tigers scored on their second possession of the first quarter after beginning with the ball on their own 20 yard line. Under the direction of Kiley Huddleston Katy moved the ball all the way to the Highlanders’ 12 yard line before the drive stalled out. Manny Mendosa came on and nailed a field goal making it 3-0. In the second quarter the proverbial scoring floodgate sprung open for Katy with Rodney Anderson scoring 3 TDs. These plays should make the highlight videos. Anderson had two touchdowns in 30 seconds. The first came when he broke loose a 97 yard run down the sideline to score. The second TD, exactly 30 seconds, later came after The Woodlands fumbled the ball away on their own 9 yard line. Nine yards out – no problem for Anderson. Put another TD on the score board. At 2:44 left in the quarter Anderson scores again from 3 yards after a sustained Katy drive beginning at the Katy 23 yard line. At the end of the first half Anderson accumulated 172 yards rushing. With about 4 minutes left in the third quarter he had chalked up his third 200 plus yard game; he finished with 226 yards rushing, 240 total yards. The Tiger defense just keeps getting better every game. One of the reasons is the play of linebacker, Collin Wilder. Collin Wilder and Travis Whillock intercepted the Highlanders twice. Wilder started for the Tigers as a freshman. “I’m a big competitor and if I’m not playing at the highest level I can, then I’m not satisfied.” Cinco Ranch Defeats Cy Ridge 49-26 By Tom Behrens, CoveringKaty.com says Wilder. “When I started I asked Coach Joseph what I had to do to make the varsity. He gave me those opportunities and it wasn’t easy.” On the trick play the Highlanders used in the third quarter to score their first touchdown: “I was bitter, I’m not going to lie, but it will prepare us for later games,” continued Wilder. “The next time that happens we will be ready. We know our potential and how young we are,” says Wilder. “We expect to make big plays.” The Woodlands scored on a 5 yard pass to Tyler Patrick who then tossed the ball back to Patrick Carr who left the Katy defenders flatfooted, scoring on a 60 yard run. In the second half the Tigers substituted liberally. Kiley Huddleston alternated quarterback duties with Garrett Doiron. The Tigers duo completed 8 of 21 passes. The question was asked if the injury Huddleston suffered last week’s game was giving him problems. He says he’s healthy. “Just a few injuries we are taking care of in the preseason,” said Huddleston. “Preseason does count, but it’s not the end of the world. We have been taking care of my injuries so I can be 100 percent when district competition begins.” Did the Highlanders present the challenge that the Tigers expected? “We played a team that is very fundamentally sound,” Huddleston answered. Katy Tigers quarterback Kiley Huddleston CoveringKaty.com photo-Craig Moseley. “We just came out and did our job. We made a couple of mistakes that we need to clean up for next week. I always come out expecting it to be a hard game.” The Tigers begin 5A Region III District 19 play next Friday against Mayde Creek High School. KHS Girls Volleyball McConnell Takes the Reins Photo by Craig Mosely - CoveringKaty.com The Cinco Ranch Cougars mixed a combination of passing and running to easily defeat the Cy Ridge Rams, 49-26 Saturday evening at Rhodes Stadium. This was Cy Ridge’s first game of the season. In the Cougars second possession of the first quarter Blake Hirsch ripped off a 62 yard run to the Ram’s 25 yard line. Three plays later Jonathan Lugo scored from three yards out. PAT was made and Cinco Ranch was on the scoreboard for their first touchdown of the evening. Cy Ridge garnered four yards in two plays on their next possession and then fumbled the ball as the snap went wide of the quarterback. The Cougars took over possession of the ball on the Ram 13 yard line and scored four plays later on a one yard run by Hirsch. Starting the second quarter this time the Cougars fumbled on their own 23 yard line giving the Rams their best field position of the evening. Running back, Anthony Williams, took advantage of the situation scoring from the 17. Cinco Ranch scored once more before halftime, mixing a combination of passes from Luke Klingler and runs by Jonathan Lugo and Blake Hirsch to make the score 28-7. Starting the third quarter Klingler connected to Corey Ceniceros for 35 yards. With the PAT Cougars were ahead 35-7. Many teams would have rolled over at this point, but the Rams weren’t conceding anything. On their next possession Anthony Williams scored and it’s 35-14. Unfortunately for the Rams, neither were the Cougars finished scoring. With 3:17 left in the third quarter Blake Hirsch scores again for Cinco Ranch making the score 42-14. Cy Ridge receiver Luis Betancourt hauls in a pass to give the Rams their third TD of the evening. The PAT was wide making the score 42-20. Going into the fourth quarter each team had enough gas in the tank to score one more time. Both teams were beginning to show the effects of a hard fought second half. Cy Ridge scored first making it 42-26. The Rams tried for a two point conversion but fail. With 4:53 left in the game Klingler connects with Geryn Young for 33 yards, making the final score 49-26. Without the 28 points the Cougars amassed in the first half, the outcome of the game could have been different. By Ahmard Vital In the world of leadership, age is nothing but a number, a quite irrelevant one in the opinion of some. Those who put in the work necessary and produce results have earned the right to leader and claim that top spot. On the Katy volleyball team, Madison McConnell has claimed that top spot. And oh yeah, she is only a sophomore. Last season, McConnell was on the varsity squad as a No. 2 rotation player, getting some valuable playing time. But eventually, the 5-foot-10 middle blocker would rise up and earn her place at the starter’s table. She not only did that, but also has taken on a leadership role, which she gladly and willingly accepts. “I enjoy leading our team and holding everyone accountable. We hold ourselves to the high standards that we set,” McConnell said. “For me, I like the position I hold because I don’t have to worry about putting fmuch pressure on my team. I place that pressure on me because I am in a position to make plays. I have no problem taking the heat for my team.” Spoken like Fortune 500 CEO with those words. But the actions support that. Katy volleyball coach Karen Paxton said that McConnell is having a great year and is the team’s kill leader almost every night. That’s probably because McConnell averages about 15 kills per game, and this is before the start of district play. This season will be one of focus like no other, especially after a 2012 season where Katy did not play past the regular season. McConnell already sees positive changes occurring with the team for the start of this season. “I definitely think we will have a good year. We have come together as a team a lot better than we did last year,” McConnell said. “We are hoping to get a district championship and get into a few rounds of the playoffs.” As the new leader of the Lady Tiger team, McConnell took upon herself to get things going. With things a little rocky from the previous year, she and setter Amy Miller put in some extra work so that things will flow on the court better. When the communication between the setter and the rest of the team, especially with middle blockers and outside hitters, is going well, the flow of the game is much more harmonious. That was a full transition and transformation for McConnell. “Last year I was second string and was really trying to find my way. This year the setter (Miller) and I are communicating a lot better,” McConnell said. “There’s a difference with us. We met some in the off season and over the summer for some one-on-one time. It was important for us to find out what we needed from each other.” So far, it seems as though things are working well within the inner workings of the team and the expectations within the organization are high. But the team knows it will be no easy road. With Cinco Ranch defending its title and the emergence of Seven Lakes, it will be a fight to the top. With the accountability factor and the standards set, this is a fight that this team is mentally and physically ready to endure.
