I love Thee with all my heart and with all the strength of my soul. I repent sincerely of my sins and I beg Thee, O Good Jesus, to grant me the strength to triumph over them. According to tradition, St. John was served poisoned wine, but survived because he blessed the wine before he put it to his lips; the poison rose from the chalice in the shape of a serpent. In his happy memory, Catholics bring wine to church, which the priest blesses, turning it into a sacramental called the "Love of St. John." Catholics use this sacramental wine for special occasions throughout the year and to give to the sick. “Deign, O Lord, to bless and consecrate with Thy right hand, Lord, this cup of wine, and every drink. Grant that by the merits of Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist, all who believe in Thee and drink of this cup may be blessed and protected. Blessed John drank poison from the cup, and was in no way harmed. So, too, may all who this day drink from this cup in honor of Blessed John, by his merits, be freed from every sickness by poisoning and from any harms whatever. And, when they have offered themselves in both soul and body, may they be freed, too, from every fault, through Christ our Lord. ORIGIN OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE & OTHER CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Saint Boniface, an English missionary, known as the "Apostle of Germany", in 722 came upon some men who were about to cut a huge oak tree as a stake (Oak of Thor) for a human sacrifice to their pagan god. With one mighty blow, Saint Boniface himself felled the massive oak and as the tree split, a beautiful young fir tree sprang from its center. Saint Boniface told the people that this lovely evergreen, with its branches pointing to heaven, was indeed a holy tree, the tree of the Christ Child, a symbol of His promise of eternal life. He instructed them henceforth to carry the evergreen from the wilderness into their homes and to surround it with gifts, symbols of love and kindness. In Roman times wreaths made of laurel were used as symbols of victory. Christians adopted the practice, using wreaths (usually of pine nowadays) to represent the victory of the newborn King. The prickly leaves and red berries of holly (Ilex opaca) represent the Crown of Thorns with Christ's Blood, a reminder to us that the Holy Infant was born on this night only to redeem us with His Blood. Earlier symbolism associates holly with the burning thorn bush that Moses saw. Poinsettia plants (Euphorbia pulcherima), called "Nativity Flower," and "Flores de Noche buena" or "Flowers of Holy Night" in Mexico, is a New World Christmas tradition. The shape of the leaves symbolize the Star of Bethlehem; their red color represents the Blood of Christ and the burning love of God. 6 CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE December 24, Thursday, 8 AM Low Mass at the Oratory followed by Benediction (This is the regular Mass of Dec. 24 and NOT the First Mass of Christmas!). 9 PM CHRISTMAS CAROLS performed by Saint Gianna Oratory Choir at the Oratory, followed at 9:30 PM by THE FIRST MASS OF CHRISTMAS (High Mass) December 25, Friday, FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD 7 AM Low Mass and 12:45 PM High Mass at St. Gianna Oratory December 27, SUNDAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD 6 AM Low Mass and 12:45 PM High Mass at St. Gianna Oratory January 1, 2010, OCTAVE DAY OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD, HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION, FIRST FRIDAY 7 AM Low Mass and 12:45 High Mass at St. Gianna Oratory CRUISE PILGRIMAGES Exclusive Visit with us or give us a Cruise! call to find out more!
