NEW PRODUCTS
At the 2005 NAB international convention in
Las Vegas, the AEQ DR -100 digital recorder
won these outstanding prizes:
Radio World's 2005 Cool Stuff Award
Broadcast Engineering's 2005 Pick Hit
BE Radio's 2005 Pick Hit
For decades, each April the industry's professional magazines
have descended on the NAB convention to seek out the best
new offerings on the floor and award them prizes. These are
the products that create the greatest sensation among their
readers. The products are judged and the prizes awarded in
a completely objective, transparent manner, either by
independent juries made up of prestigious industry
professionals or by popular vote.
At this year's NAB show, AEQ presented its DR-100 digital
recorder and was rewarded with an avalanche of prizes - no
fewer than three!
The product has been designed to fill an important niche in
the market for a small, lightweight, professional device to be
used by a reporter for recording high
quality audio material while out the
studio. Once the audio has been
recorded, the reporter can use
the same equipment to edit
the material on the spot
and transfer it to the
station in audio
format, via a cell
phone, or as an
audio file via
a modem
or over
the
Internet
from a
computer.

UPDATED SYSTEL 6000 INCORPORATES
USER SUGGESTIONS
The AEQ Systel 6000 is the only solution of its kind in the
world. It is not just a simple tool for talk shows or
multiplexing consoles. It handles radio or television station
communications in a comprehensive manner.
During nearly two years on the market the AEQ SYSTEL 6000
has been adopted by many showcase stations. Some highly
experienced users have provided us with many suggestions
for adapting it to their operational needs. We have taken
these suggestions to heart and brought out a new
Systel 6000, so flexible that it can be used without having to
change the working practices at any station.
To find out more about the new Systel 6000, visit our
website at www.aeq.es to check out the details and download
the manual. You can also request the DEMO software on CD
or an on-site demonstration.
NEW TELEPHONE MODULE FOR AEQ
BC-500 CONSOLE
The AEQ BC 500 broadcast console now offers the option to

products.
This is why the first users of the BC 2000 D matrix, Heilong

configured and maintained by computer, but made sure their
system included dedicated panels to perform every-day
switching operations. With this in mind, the NCB-100 panel,

disconnections, salvos and macros, protect or unprotect lines,
and even tells the user the exact time. Its flexibility lets you
program it especially to cover particular needs that may arise
in any location.
It has 12 programmable keys, a large display, a scroll knob
with a pushbutton activating function, 4 dual-function keys

AEQ
25
hits the
year mark
When drawing up its
articles of incorporation at
the end of 1979,
Aplicaciones Electrónicas
Quasar (AEQ) identified its
activities as the
manufacture and marketing
of electronic products.
During the early 1980s, the company's business was
consolidated in the field of professional audio. The firm soon
established itself as a leading specialist in broadcast audio
products and projects.
A quarter of a century has passed and AEQ has achieved
much including many goals: the design and construction of
the musical equipment used by Asfalto, Spain's leading rock
band in its day, the export of audio power amplifiers, the first
portable mixer for radio, the BC 2000 analogue console, our
first digital telephone hybrid, the first codecs used in the
Olympic Games (in Atlanta), our Mar4Win hard disk
automation system, the digital DCS-10 commentary system,
our ISO 9001 quality certification, the BC 2000 D digital
console….and we are still going strong!
Now our current strategic plan includes the construction of
new purpose built premises, a building where we will
continue to research and innovate on the campus of the
Universidad de Carlos III. We have an outline agreement with
the Madrid-based university where we will in future carry out
joint research and development projects. This initiative will
enable us to further renew and expand our product line.
Technology moves inexorably forward, and new solutions are
continually being sought to perfect and simplify the tasks
involved in creating and broadcasting multimedia content.
That is why at AEQ, with 25 years behind us, we still feel
quite young, and eager - excited by the possibilities our skills
can provide together with a strong sense of our mission in
the information society.
Model of the future AEQ building in the Legatec science and technology park.

USA
Radio is
my life.
AEQ adapts the Real Time Control
software for the Course multicodec to
ESPN’s needs
ESPN is an active AEQ customer using the full
array of AEQ ISDN codecs, including the Course
(a multicodec capable of handling up to 10 audio codecs in a
4U rack chassis), the Eagle (the popular 1U audio codec) and
the Swing (our portable ISDN codec with a built in telephone
hybrid and mixer). All these products belong to the E@sy family.
The E@sy remote control consists of an application software Real
Time Control (RTC), and a direct connection through the E@sy
communications port. The RTC comes free with any of the AEQ
audio codecs.
ESPN found the E@sy remote control capability in the AEQ audio
codecs very useful to control their multiple ISDN lines. Shortly
after installing the AEQ audio codecs, the engineering
department requested a simple modification in the RTC software.
The request was to make the call termination a two-step process
to avoid involuntary call hang-up. AEQ implemented this request
very quickly. The second change requested by ESPN for the RTC
software consisted the addition of line labeling capability in the
software, this making the line identification easier for the operator.

I could not believe that ever
since my first encounter
with radio, as a Citizen Band
Radio Operator that my love
for the field would have
grown this much. I am always enthusiastic about new
technologies and equipment. Later, I became an amateur
(Ham) radio operator [J88DF] because I felt it encouraged me
to get more involved into the electronics and theory of radio.
Then came live radio, my very first job after leaving high school
was a Technical Operator at the National Broadcasting
Corporation, NBC Radio, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I
spent less than three years in that position and was later
transferred to the Program Departments as a New Reporter.
The progression continued as I gained experience and further
qualifications I was promoted to an Announcer/ Newscaster.
When I left NBC Radio in 2004, I had served as the Program
Manager for just over two years. During my time as Program
Manager, I was part of a committee to select equipment for
the upgrade of the studio facilities. I had the pleasure of
reviewing products from most, if not all, of the major players in
the broadcast industry including AEQ Broadcast. At the time, I
had no idea that I would eventually be part of the AEQ family.
Yes, at AEQ we have exceeded the realm of being a team we
are a family. Since October 2004 in my marketing/sales
position in AEQ, I interact daily with dealers, operation
managers and engineers. My 13 years of experience in radio
has certainly made this new challenge an easier one. Now, in
my spare time I continue to research new and emerging
technologies for radio and I have live fun on WAVS, an AM
radio station in Davie, Florida.

but the unexpected
demand from radio
broadcasters who use
ISDN transmissions for
their dedicated
commentary signals made
seeking an increase in our
ISDN transmission
capacity inevitable".

BC 2000 D
delivering full performance
in the best stations
The BC-2000D console has been shipping since Autumn 2005 and the first users, from highly diverse
backgrounds are finding out how well it adapts to their particular work methods.
The consoles leave the factory pre-configured for each client and during set-up they are further configured to
the way each station operates.
The reception these consoles have received is impressive, so in addition to the ones that have already been
delivered, there are many orders - ample reward for AEQ’s huge technical and financial commitment to
digital audio consoles for radio and television.
The users have particularly mentioned its complete radio console functionality, its extensive processing
capabilities: equalization, dynamics, delay and others, the modular control panel with several pages of
motorized faders, the flexible assignment of inputs and outputs on each fader and its integration with the
switching matrix of the central control room.

ASA-AFRICA
ASIA-AFRICA
For its foreign satellite
broadcasting service
ALL INDIA RADIO (AIR) buys 42 AEQ MPAC- 02
portable codecs and 42 AEQ Eagle
rackmounted codecs
Via consulting firm WEBEL, AEQ and its local representative,
Falcon Technologies, supplied these products for AIR's 42
regional facilities, so that
each facility can send and
receive, in high quality,
news of external events through full duplex Nera digital
transponders. This deal was valued at around half a million
US dollars.
The AEQ MPAC 02 converts the audio at microphone or line
level to a 64Kbps data stream sent to the portable Nera
satellite uplink. This is received, via satellite and then the
data stream is converted by the AEQ Eagle, codec into
analogue and digital AES/EBU audio to the central control
room. Return feeds are sent back to the remote site for
decoding by the MPAC-02.
Using MPEG L2 coding, the audio bandwidth achieves
11KHz although when delays are more critical, G722 coding
is used with a 7KHz bandwidth. Both bandwidths are
sufficient for most of AIR's applications.
Installation of the router of RTM in Rabat
The heart of the system is an Impact 2x120x120-circuit digital
audio routers, plus a 10-card Course codec, controlled
through a network of nine workstations with the Impact+ and
Systel 6000 applications.
The installation
training and system
adjustment have
been completed in
Rabat. The system
will multiply and

current MDC.
The new Rabat

Distribution Center
controls and routes
the signals
generated at each
of the network's 8
studios in the
Moroccan capital, as
well as the
contributions from
regional stations. It
facilitates mobile and temporary communications for the live
broadcast of outside events.
Communications are managed through the Systel 6000
application, operated from each of the control centers or from
the MDC's control console. A new release will be installed,
which will reflect the suggestions of hundreds of users who
over an extended period of beta testing the application (in
some cases more than a year). This process has helped the

way the application
develops.
The studios are
interconnected with
each other and with
the transmission
facilities through the
Impact+ application,
which makes it
possible to configure
matrix views so that
each operator in a
studio or at the MDC has available only those circuits he or
she needs to work with. Pre-programmed block switching
(salvos) can also be done, or automatically at a preprogrammed
time.
As we go to press,
Radio Television
of Morocco (RTM)
plans to expand
and improve their
infrastructure by
adding further
communications
terminals for their
Systel 6000 and
increasing the capacity offered by the AEQ Impact matrix to
handle analogue circuits through more Caddy converters and
AEQ DA-16T analogue audio distribution amplifiers.
Community Radio in Guinea Bissau
AEQ has given a positive response to the request from the
Associação Guineense de Estudo e Divulgação de
Tecnologias Apropriadas (DIVUTEC), an NGO involved in the
creation of a community radio station in Guinea Bissau. The
objective is to provide news and information services to the
local population in the Boé area, where the natives of Guinea
Bissau declared their independence from Portugal in 1973.
Although this is a small project, the country has, serious
infrastructure problems and this will bring a great benefit to
the area. The system includes a 500W FM transmission
system including antenna, and a complete radio studio
equipped with an AEQ BC-300 mixer, microphones, CD
players, cassette recorders, monitors, etc., with workspace for
a presenter and a guest.

AEQ INSTALLS CADENA SER
NETWORK RADIO STATION
"RADIO VIGO"
With a special engineering solution involving AEQ
BC 2000 D consoles and routers to share a studio
facility among five control rooms.
Radio Vigo has been a leading station on Spain’s northwest
coast for three generations. Recently it moved into a renovated
building near the city’s marina and re-equipped the station with
the most advanced technological systems.
The production studio has a console with 15 faders and an
exclusive studio booth. A shared studio room can also be used.

the development of a very special engineering project to adapt
the station to the particular characteristics of the new studio
space, and the great variety of radio broadcasting products that
TSF Rádio Jornal
acquires a
BC 2000 D Digital
mixing console
Radio Jornal is a prestigious national FM and on-line
(www.tsf.pt) radio broadcaster with emphasis on news. A
significant part of its reporting equipment comprises AEQ
Swing codecs and Course multi-codecs. The Portuguese
broadcaster has been using a Systel 3000 with eight
analogue lines for debates and sports coverage daily for
the past 12 years without a single breakdown.
Radio Jornal plans to replace it with the new AEQ Systel
6000 shortly.
The new BC 2000 D digital mixing console, with its new,
completely modular rack / control surface concept, will
replace a digital console made by another manufacturer.
RDP purchases BC 2000 Digital
RDP-Radiodifusão Portuguesa bought two AEQ BC 2000 D
digital consoles to equip
Studios 6 and 7 and
continuity for their main
channel, Antena 1.
Antena 1 is aimed at a
general audience. Its
main components are
national and international
news, entertainment- predominantly
Portuguese music,
information on important
socio-cultural topics and
sport.
Radio Vigo produces and markets. Radio Vigo is an affiliate of
the Cadena Ser network.
In the central control room, a BC 2000 D switching matrix was
installed and linked by optical fiber with the BC 2000 D
consoles in the studios.
There are six studios: the production studio has a console with
15 faders and an exclusive studio booth. The other five air
control and recording control facilities share a single talks studio.
The main On Air control facility for SER AM and FM has a
console with 15 faders.
The On Air control facilities for the station's four music stations 40 Principales (Top 40), Máxima FM, Dial, and M80 - -are
equipped with consoles having only five audio channels (each
with 9 pages - equivalent to 45 faders!), and normally work in
automation mode.
Talkback among the control rooms and studios is provide by an
intercom system integrated into the BC 2000 D system.
Antena 1 has satellite coverage for Europe via Hotbird 4,
for Africa via Intelsat 2, and for Asia and Oceania via
Asiasat 2. Onda Média, FM and DAB - Digital Audio
Broadcasting covers mainland Portugal and the outlying
regions of Madeira and the Azores. Antena 1 can also be
heard on line at www.rdp.pt.
Console topology
In the Technical Control Centre one 5-fader BC 2000 DM
module and two 10-fader BC 2000 D 10 modules were
installed.
Despite being studio booth control centres, these studios
have the distinction of facilitating operation in automatic
mode from an associated booth.
Another BC 2000 D 10 surface mirrors one of the Control
Centre modules. This solution enables the station to
manage if desired without a master control technician,
during, some continuity programs, interviews, system
control and Mar4win automation.

NEWS
Norway’s TV2 has just installed an AEQ BC 2000 D digital
crosspoint matrix in Bergen for the routing of audio sources.
Eivind Mikkelsen, TV2’s Technical Services Manager,
congratulated AEQ for their excellent job.
TV2 is the leading commercial TV network in Norway and
selected the BC 2000 D over competing routers, not just for its
features, but also for AEQ’s willingness and commitment to a
shorter lead time as the system was required for TV2’s coverage
of the Norwegian General Elections.
The system handles over one hundred digital and analogue input and output
channels controlled by AEQ’s comprehensive Real Time Control software using
IP. From purchase to installation, commissioning and training, the entire process
took just one month over the holiday period ready in good time for the
elections on 12 September.
Mr. Eivind Mikkelsen, said: “We were under pressure to have the system ready
for the elections and AEQ delivered on their promise. The router was a
success on Monday. The election used most of the capacity in the router, and
it worked perfectly. We are very pleased. Thank you for all your help."
Leading the project for AEQ, Ramón Pascual said that this was “a prestigious
project and we are very happy that the elections went smoothly for TV2 using
the BC 2000 D.”
