Printed by: Marco Gráfico www.aeq.es [email protected] AEQ 25 hits the year mark When drawing up its articles of incorporation at the end of 1979, Aplicaciones Electrónicas Quasar (AEQ) identified its activities as the manufacture and marketing of electronic products. During the early 1980s, the company's business was consolidated in the field of professional audio. The firm soon established itself as a leading specialist in broadcast audio products and projects. A quarter of a century has passed and AEQ has achieved much including many goals: the design and construction of the musical equipment used by Asfalto, Spain's leading rock band in its day, the export of audio power amplifiers, the first portable mixer for radio, the BC 2000 analogue console, our first digital telephone hybrid, the first codecs used in the Olympic Games (in Atlanta), our Mar4Win hard disk automation system, the digital DCS-10 commentary system, our ISO 9001 quality certification, the BC 2000 D digital console….and we are still going strong! Now our current strategic plan includes the construction of new purpose built premises, a building where we will continue to research and innovate on the campus of the Universidad de Carlos III. We have an outline agreement with the Madrid-based university where we will in future carry out joint research and development projects. This initiative will enable us to further renew and expand our product line. Technology moves inexorably forward, and new solutions are continually being sought to perfect and simplify the tasks involved in creating and broadcasting multimedia content. That is why at AEQ, with 25 years behind us, we still feel quite young, and eager - excited by the possibilities our skills can provide together with a strong sense of our mission in the information society. Model of the future AEQ building in the Legatec science and technology park. 3 USA AEQ PARTICIPATED IN THE FOLLOWING FAIRS IN THE USA USA Radio is my life. AEQ adapts the Real Time Control software for the Course multicodec to ESPN’s needs ESPN is an active AEQ customer using the full array of AEQ ISDN codecs, including the Course (a multicodec capable of handling up to 10 audio codecs in a 4U rack chassis), the Eagle (the popular 1U audio codec) and the Swing (our portable ISDN codec with a built in telephone hybrid and mixer). All these products belong to the E@sy family. The E@sy remote control consists of an application software Real Time Control (RTC), and a direct connection through the E@sy communications port. The RTC comes free with any of the AEQ audio codecs. ESPN found the E@sy remote control capability in the AEQ audio codecs very useful to control their multiple ISDN lines. Shortly after installing the AEQ audio codecs, the engineering department requested a simple modification in the RTC software. The request was to make the call termination a two-step process to avoid involuntary call hang-up. AEQ implemented this request very quickly. The second change requested by ESPN for the RTC software consisted the addition of line labeling capability in the software, this making the line identification easier for the operator. 4 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA NAB Radio show, September 21th to 23th , 2005 Verona, N.Y., USA 33rd Annual SBE 22 Broadcast & Technology Expo, on September 22th, 2005 Madison, Wisconsin, USA 2005 Broadcasters Clinic, October 11th to 13th, 2005 NAB 2005 I could not believe that ever since my first encounter with radio, as a Citizen Band Radio Operator that my love for the field would have grown this much. I am always enthusiastic about new technologies and equipment. Later, I became an amateur (Ham) radio operator [J88DF] because I felt it encouraged me to get more involved into the electronics and theory of radio. Then came live radio, my very first job after leaving high school was a Technical Operator at the National Broadcasting Corporation, NBC Radio, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I spent less than three years in that position and was later transferred to the Program Departments as a New Reporter. The progression continued as I gained experience and further qualifications I was promoted to an Announcer/ Newscaster. When I left NBC Radio in 2004, I had served as the Program Manager for just over two years. During my time as Program Manager, I was part of a committee to select equipment for the upgrade of the studio facilities. I had the pleasure of reviewing products from most, if not all, of the major players in the broadcast industry including AEQ Broadcast. At the time, I had no idea that I would eventually be part of the AEQ family. Yes, at AEQ we have exceeded the realm of being a team we are a family. Since October 2004 in my marketing/sales position in AEQ, I interact daily with dealers, operation managers and engineers. My 13 years of experience in radio has certainly made this new challenge an easier one. Now, in my spare time I continue to research new and emerging technologies for radio and I have live fun on WAVS, an AM radio station in Davie, Florida. by Paul Lowman Austin, Texas Texas Association of Broadcaster, TAB held in the Hilton Austin Downtown, Austin, Texas on August 4th, 2005. This deal was valued at around half a million US dollars. The AEQ MPAC 02 converts the audio at microphone or line level to a 64Kbps data stream sent to the portable Nera satellite uplink. This is received, via satellite and then the data stream is converted by the AEQ Eagle, codec into analogue and digital AES/EBU audio to the central control room. Return feeds are sent back to the remote site for decoding by the MPAC-02. Using MPEG L2 coding, the audio bandwidth achieves 11KHz although when delays are more critical, G722 coding is used with a 7KHz bandwidth. Both bandwidths are sufficient for most of AIR's applications. Installation of the router of RTM in Rabat The heart of the system is an Impact 2x120x120-circuit digital audio routers, plus a 10-card Course codec, controlled through a network of nine workstations with the Impact+ and Systel 6000 applications. The installation training and system adjustment have been completed in Rabat. The system will multiply and simplify the work output of National Radio of Morocco’s current MDC. The new Rabat Modulation and Distribution Center controls and routes the signals generated at each of the network's 8 studios in the Moroccan capital, as well as the contributions from regional stations. It facilitates mobile and temporary communications for the live broadcast of outside events. Communications are managed through the Systel 6000 application, operated from each of the control centers or from the MDC's control console. A new release will be installed, which will reflect the suggestions of hundreds of users who over an extended period of beta testing the application (in some cases more than a year). This process has helped the 8 way the application develops. The studios are interconnected with each other and with the transmission facilities through the Impact+ application, which makes it possible to configure matrix views so that each operator in a studio or at the MDC has available only those circuits he or she needs to work with. Pre-programmed block switching (salvos) can also be done, or automatically at a preprogrammed time. As we go to press, Radio Television of Morocco (RTM) plans to expand and improve their infrastructure by adding further communications terminals for their Systel 6000 and increasing the capacity offered by the AEQ Impact matrix to handle analogue circuits through more Caddy converters and AEQ DA-16T analogue audio distribution amplifiers. Community Radio in Guinea Bissau AEQ has given a positive response to the request from the Associação Guineense de Estudo e Divulgação de Tecnologias Apropriadas (DIVUTEC), an NGO involved in the creation of a community radio station in Guinea Bissau. The objective is to provide news and information services to the local population in the Boé area, where the natives of Guinea Bissau declared their independence from Portugal in 1973. Although this is a small project, the country has, serious infrastructure problems and this will bring a great benefit to the area. The system includes a 500W FM transmission system including antenna, and a complete radio studio equipped with an AEQ BC-300 mixer, microphones, CD players, cassette recorders, monitors, etc., with workspace for a presenter and a guest. Eivind Mikkelsen, TV2’s Technical Services Manager, congratulated AEQ for their excellent job. TV2 is the leading commercial TV network in Norway and selected the BC 2000 D over competing routers, not just for its features, but also for AEQ’s willingness and commitment to a shorter lead time as the system was required for TV2’s coverage of the Norwegian General Elections. The system handles over one hundred digital and analogue input and output channels controlled by AEQ’s comprehensive Real Time Control software using IP. From purchase to installation, commissioning and training, the entire process took just one month over the holiday period ready in good time for the elections on 12 September. Mr. Eivind Mikkelsen, said: “We were under pressure to have the system ready for the elections and AEQ delivered on their promise. The router was a success on Monday. The election used most of the capacity in the router, and it worked perfectly. We are very pleased. Thank you for all your help." Leading the project for AEQ, Ramón Pascual said that this was “a prestigious project and we are very happy that the elections went smoothly for TV2 using the BC 2000 D.” BROADCAST 2005 We will exhibit at the 2005 Madrid Broadcast fair from November 15 through 18, 2005, at Stand 4F601.
