LF & COU GO CLUB RY NT DELTA BALLROOM Scheduled by Reservation O ne Hundred New Members in One Hundred Days celebrating our One Hundred Year Anniversary. This Membership Drive kicked off on April 3rd with a presentation to our Members by Steve Graves, President of Creative Golf Marketing, the firm we hired to lead us in this campaign. All who attended left with a lot of enthusiasm and feeling that we can accomplish this. This first day we already had two new members with only 98 more to go to meet our goal. All of our Members are encouraged to ask their friends and acquaintances to join us in this unique drive. Read the material you’ve been given, and you’ll agree that it’s a “win-win” situation for both you and the person or persons you sponsor. To quote Mr. Graves, “The primary goal of your Board of Directors is to strengthen our Membership base and in so doing, provide the financial foundation to allow for the continued improvement of our extraordinary Club.” THANKS to Garrett Becker, one of our members, who replaced a broken caster on each of a few chairs that were in storage at a very minimal cost; these chairs are now back in the A. G. Spanos Grill. Also, David Miller, CEO of Goodwill Industries, had one of their trucks in our parking lot on March 31 to collect the electronic waste that was in our storage; SGCC members and Stockton Chamber members were invited to bring their electronic waste also. These two activities completely freed up one of our storage areas. EVENTS: The Rotary Club of Stockton had over 300 members in attendance to entertain the International President of Rotary International on March 31. Rotarians from throughout the District praised our Club’s facilities, the food and the service. C STO KTON DINING AT SGCC FROM THE PRESIDENT Celebrating 100 Years! O SENIORS’ CORNER Message from Senior’s Department Garry Potten, [email protected] n Friday, March 21, if you were one of the 37 senior men to participate in our Senior Men’s Club kick-off tournament, you made a great decision. Golfers arriving at the club were greeted at the registration table by our 4 beautiful (self-named) “Check-in Chicks”; Candy, Jan, Janet, and Becky. Not a bad way to start the day, eh? After check-in, we were treated to a scrumptious breakfast before the round of golf. Upon completion of our round we enjoyed a delicious lunch, which preceded our awards ceremony. Sixteen of the 37 player field shared in the $226.00 prize fund. And get this, the whole shebang only cost $25!! Heck, you can’t stay at home for that little. But don’t fret, there are plenty of opportunities left this season with our Home and Home events. Our first Home and Home tourney was played at Discovery Bay on Wednesday, April 9. Twenty players made the 35 minute sojourn to the west and enjoyed a beautiful day of golf and camaraderie. Many players car pooled in the SGCC parking lot at 7:00 am and made the trip together. If you ever need a ride you should consider taking advantage of this benefit. Of SGCC’s 20 entrants at Discovery Bay, 10 players shared $134.97 in prizes. Lance“Show me the money” Rieber was a member of the winning team pocketing $29.00 in club credit. Second place club credit for SGCC members Roy “I can’t believe I’m in the money again” Henderson and George “Early Riser” Retamoza, was $18.66 of club credit. Tony “Hey I really am a Senior Board member” walked away with closest to the pin honors, bagging a whopping $10.00. By the time you read this bulletin, we will have played our second Home and Home tournament which hopefully took place on April 25, with Brookside, La Contenta, and Turlock playing at our beautiful course. On May 23 we will be visiting Oakdale CC and June 6 Discovery Bay comes to SGCC. June 11 has us travelling to Woodbridge. Mark your calendars for these events…and while you are at it you can start planning for our 2nd Annual Senior Men’s Invitational which is scheduled for July 11th. If you haven’t yet done so, please pick up your handy dandy wallet sized Senior Men’s schedule at in the pro-shop. Your Centennial Senior Men’s Roster is also ready and waiting for you in the same locale. Speaking of the Roster, there are a couple of changes you might want to note: Ray Lucas....................Change Phone to: 601-0800 ...................................... Night Phone to: 478-2996 Guy Petzoid..........................Change to Guy Petzold Hope to see you all on the course. If profanity had an impact on the flight of the ball, the game of golf would be played a lot better. MEMBER PROFILE Roy Henderson by Kelley Spooner 5 F or some 40 years Roy has called Stockton Golf & C.C. his home away from home. Whether it’s a golf game, page of gin, or lunch in the A.G. Spanos Grill, you can bet you’ll run into him on any given day at the club. Sponsored in to the club by Max Freeman and Bobby Rishwain, Roy remembers the early days at the club as being labeled as the biggest gambling club in the Valley. If your golf game didn’t fair so well, likely there was a card game or as he mentioned, a game of dominoes that was the big thing back in the 70’s. Additionally, he talked about the “Traditions” of the club back then, and recalls themed dances and tournaments. A few of the golf events were “Irish Day”, “Okie Day”, and “Portuguese Day”, and Holiday tournaments, most of which included dinner & dancing. Roy remembers making so many friends in the club and enjoying traveling to various tournaments. The culture of the club has certainly changed over the years. The membership that was once made up of families of the family businesses that drove the city, are no longer. Many of those businesses are gone now and replaced with the big box stores. Roy went on to say that family dynamics have changed in most families as both parents are in the work place. They have many more activities to choose from and limited time to schedule everything. Roy spoke of the newest clubhouse which opened in May 2006, as being a beautiful building with many rooms for entertaining. In 2013, Roy gathered his family for two special occasions; a family reunion dinner and a christening party of his youngest grandchild. Besides the golf course, pool, and fitness club, he went on to say he just loves the club. It’s a place I feel safe, enjoy time with good friends, and that has storied history, 100 years worth. In the 1930s when the club had an $8,000 debt, Traub arranged for six slot machines and, in three years, the debt was paid off. When the authorities threatened to raid the place Traub tossed the slot machines into the river. They were never recovered. I t’s an exciting time around the club these days with many activities and the planning of so many more to come throughout the year as we celebrate the club’s centennial year. The Board and the various Committees are working hard to plan events that will commemorate this special year. Golf activities at the club have been in full swing since the middle of March with outside tournaments when we played host to the NCGA/NCPGA Junior Tour. As we carve into the golf season, we will host nearly 30 outside events throughout the year. Additionally, SGCC will deliver many club events such as the Men’s & Ladies Invitational’s to be staged in May & June, respectively, just to name a few featured events. 36 hole qualifier. His next step is to apply for the apprentice program of the PGA and work towards his class “A” status as a PGA Professional. Great job Matt, keep up the good work. And then there was my tournament in March… the LPGA National Pro-Am at the famed Mission Hills C.C. in Rancho Mirage, Ca. Admittedly by default, a fellow LPGA pro went on the injured reserve, and I was called up to take over her team and play in the event. The LPGA Pro-Am presented by the Volvik Company, staged 27 teams made up of 4 amateurs & 1 professional with a 2 best ball format playing on the Dinah Shore course where the LPGA Tour was to play the very next week. Events are being designed for the juniors with camps beginning at the end of June with the Jr-Jr camp ages 4-6 years old, followed by Jr. Camps I & II scheduled in July for the 7-17 years old players. Registration forms will be mailed in the club billing. Winning Gross & Net teams would receive prize money, trophies, Volvik golf bags, and ceremonial robes after their leap into “Poppy’s Pond” off the 18th green. Well, I didn’t get to make the leap, but my team did WIN the Gross division of the event. Wow, so much fun for me and thrilled to come home a winner! See you around the club! Kelley News about the Professional Staff: A big congratulations goes out to Matt Marmon, our assistant golf professional, who recently passed his playing ability test for the PGA. See you on the course. Rob Rob Williams Message from Golf Course Superintendent Rob Williams [email protected] 10 Tuesday Ladies O nce again, Susan Marks and Jan Morrison presented our Tuesday Ladies with a beautifully decorated, great menu, and a fun game for our St. Patrick’s Day Party. Most of our ladies turned out wearing something green in honor of the day. As I write this we are in the process of preparing for our April 29th neighborhood party. Invited clubs are Brookside Country Club, Discovery Bay Country Club, Spring Creek Golf & Country Club, and Woodbridge Golf & Country Club. Several of our member are helping to put this together for exhilarating day. The SGCC Centennial has provided our club with much more activity than usual and due to this some of our dates have been changed. Match Play on April 15th and 22nd was canceled. At this time, there are no changes reported for May but June dates 10th and 17th have been changed to the 17th and 24th for our Tournament of Champions. We will not play on Tuesday June 10th but will play Friday June 13th, as it stands now. Joyce Belt has been hard at work preparing for our Team Play events for the coming summer. Our first match will be May 1st with Del Rio. It has been a relatively quiet year so far and our turnout has been pretty good but we’re hoping to see some of those people that have been under the weather or supporting their children/ grandchildren, or doing that horrible four letter word - work, to help with the Team Play Away Tournaments. Please put your name on the board in the Ladies Lounge. Thursday Ladies net balls of the foursome. All players were able to contribute for this team event! We enjoyed festivities with a delicious luncheon which was organized by our chairman, Lynn Cook. It was no surprise that the teams were closely matched, but the team of Toni Murdock, Meredith McCormack, Bonnie Brown, Adrienne Hotchkiss and Sandy Albaugh took first place. They were followed by the second place team of Linda Stead, Virginia Gall, Barbara Fichtner, Lori Daugherty and Mattie Zedlitz. Coming in third place were Ardythe Hess, Jana Lane, Donna Nunes, Erlene Raspo, and Lynn Cook. Many thanks to Lynn and Kelley Spooner for a great tournament! Eight of our ladies also competed in our first Team Play event at Brookside. We are happy to report that the results were encouraging, and we will continue to keep the competition lively. Look for the signup sheets and go to enjoy a day while meeting other golf enthusiasts from various clubs throughout the valley. On May 8th, we will have another chance to invite our friends for a Guest Day! It should be a day of great fun as Marcia and Maureen Stonebarger plan a day of “Cherries Jubliee”! Reservations are flying in for our Invitational Birthday Bash! Adrienne Hotchkiss, Susan Filios and their committee are finalizing great plans for our Centennial Invitational on June 19th and 20th. Be sure to get your reservation in the mail. See you on the course! A fter some torrential rain, aeration, amazing golf maintenance and recovery, we feel so fortunate to be enjoying this fabulous spring out on the links at SGCC. Life is good and golf is great! We officially opened our golf season by inviting golfing friends to our first Guest Day on March 13th. A special thank you to Toni Murdock and Kelley Spooner who organized our day. Each guest left with a commemorative ball and Centennial marker. Winning first place that day was the team of Gayle Jennings, Mary Westin, Jan Jordan and Annette Brass. Second place winners were Linda Vater, Cheryl Dinjian, JoAnne Deegan, Patti Roddick, and winning third place were Judy Hong, Cathy Sandborn, Denise Zizzo, Georgeanne Chan. The Transitional Learning Center was the recipient of our Charity Day tournament this year. Sara Garfield spoke to our ladies and expressed the importance of this accredited school providing education for transitional students who do not qualify for a traditional classroom due to homelessness! Through the generosity of our ladies, we donated $850 to this worthy cause. Sara Garfield has volunteered her efforts for twenty-three years to make a difference in the lives of these children. Thank you to Barbara Fichtner and Donna Nunes, our chairwomen for organizing a great day. Thank you ladies! We had many compliments from our membership and continue to seek any suggestions to making our next big buffet better than the last. Mother’s Day is right around the corner and we hope that you and your family will come and enjoy the day with us. Our lunch, lounge, and dinner menus will be changing on May 2nd to reflect the season and offer more variety to our dining venues. The month of May will continue to include Tuesday Taco Tuesday alternating with Asian buffet, comfort food, and three-course features in addition to all our menus. The next Chef’s demonstration will be held on Thursday May 29th at 6pm in the Founder’s room. We will explore the application of Point Reyes Bleu Cheese in three courses and the evening would not be complete without wine. Please sign up soon! As you have noticed the club has been extremely busy with outside events, on Easter weekend we held a prom of 550 young adults to turn around and set up for our Easter Brunch the next day and the past weeks we have served over 1000 meals just in 3 days time. Our staff did an outstanding job during the start of one of our busier times of the year. We continue to service the community and have received positive feedback on our surveys; they are booking for next year!! Our dining venue hours are posted in our bulletin and as you know we have many options. One of the issues that clubs face that restaurants do not is variety and options in menu items. Restaurants have a target audience and for example are ethnic or concept based and club menus have to delve in all areas of trends and lifestyle changes. We are trying to meet the needs of membership in more ways such as offering more gluten free items. Feedback from our membership is very important in this area; we would like to hear all feedback good or bad so we can better meet the needs of our membership. On behalf of my department, we thank you for your continued support. I have included some photos from some of our events (see below). Best wishes and Bon Appétit!
