Lakes Country Library Will
Be “Rockin’ This Summer
Lakewood, Wis – Kids will have their chance to
celebrate the joys of reading at the “Rockin’ All Over the
World” program at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, July 27, at the
Lakes Country Public Library, Lakewood.
Children’s Singer/Song Rocker Mr. Billy will
present this upbeat and educational program for families.
This event is presented in correlation with the
state-wide Summer Reading Program theme, “One World,
Many Stories.” Every year, the Summer Reading Program
at area libraries provides incentives for kids to keep their
reading skills sharp while away from school.
“Without a doubt, library programs are among
my favorite shows to create and perform,” said Mr. Billy.
“Year after year, I work to deliver summer reading
presentations and new songs that excite and delight while
bringing kids and families together to experience the joys
of reading.”
“Rockin’ All Over the World” is sponsored by the
Lakes Country Library and the Nicolet Federated Library
System. It is geared toward all ages. The program will
incorporate music, songs, dancing and fun.
Mr. Billy will appear throughout the summer at
several area county libraries, including Kewaunee, Brown,
Marinette, Shawano and Oconto.
This 45-minute event is free and open to the
public For more information on this program, please
contact Pam Ellingson at the Lakes Country Library - 715276-9020.

Crandon Parks and Recreation
Program Kicks Off
The Crandon Parks and Recreation summer
program officially kicked off on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. This
year 75 kids, ranging from ages five through twelve, are
enrolled in the program. Participants receive breakfast
and lunch, and take part in a variety of activities including
arts and crafts, field trips and visits to the City Beach. The
program runs each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
through the month of July.
"This year, the kids will be traveling to the water
park in Weston, the Lumberjack Show in Minocqua and
the Antigo Aquatics Center," said Program Coordinator
Anna Gumm. "There will also be plenty of activities
happening locally, as our area has so much to offer."
Facing considerable financial constraints due to
cuts in state and local funding, program leaders reached
out to the Forest County Potawatomi Community last year
to see if the Tribe could help make the program possible
for summer 2011. The Tribe answered the call with a
$5,000 donation, which program leaders say accounts for
over 25% of the budget.
"The Forest County Potawatomi Community
recognizes the many opportunities the Crandon Parks
and Rec program offers our youth and we are pleased to
support it," said Vice-Chairman James Crawford.
"Summer in the northwoods is meant for spending time
outdoors with other kids and this program allows them to
do just that."
"We're appreciative of the Tribe for their
donation," said Program Director Chuck Sekel. "At a time
of declining state support, I'm pleased we can work with
the Forest County Potawatomi Community to make
programs like the Crandon Parks and Rec happen."
Friends of the Library Donate Funds
in Crandon
Joan Hagens, treasurer for the Friends of the
Crandon Library, recently presented a $1,000 check to
Michelle Gobert, Director of the Crandon Public Library.
The donation of the funds was approved at the June 6th
meeting of the Friends of the Library. The members
present at the meeting voted to donate the funds after the
success of their last book sale was discussed.
Library Director Michelle Gobert said the funds
will be used for new fiction materials to supplement the
new book shelves during the summer months, which are
the library's busiest time of the year.
According to Michelle Gobert each of the new
titles will be marked with a bookplate highlighting the
donation. "The addition of the bookplate allows those
patrons reading the titles to be more aware of the Friends
of the Library's fundraising activities." Michelle expects the
Friends books to be on the shelves beginning in late July
and/or early August.

Public Library? Applications are available on the Library's

If it tastes ok. is it safe to eat? Don’t count on your sense of smell, taste and sight
to tell if a food is safe. Each year in the United States, 76 million people become ill from a
foodborne illness and 5,000 people die. Would this many people eat something if they
thought it tasted, looked or smelled bad? Even if tasting would tell...a “tiny taste” may not
protect you. As few as 10 bacteria could cause some food borne illnesses, such as E.
coli.
It can take 1/2 hour to 6 weeks to become sick from unsafe foods. You usually
feel OK immediately after eating and become sick later.
Some people think that the worst that could happen to you with a food borne
illness is an upset stomach. You also can experience the following from a foodborne
illness: vomiting, fever, diarrhea, dehydration. Less common, but possible severe
conditions include: Meningitis, paralysis and death.
Some people have a greater risk for food borne illnesses. A food you can safely
eat might make others sick. People with a higher risk for food borne illnesses include:
infants, pregnant women, young children and older adults and people with weakened
immune systems and individuals with certain chronic diseases.
If a hamburger is brown in the middle, is it cooked to a safe internal
temperature? 1 out of 4 hamburgers turns brown before it has been cooked to a safe
internal temperature. Research shows some ground beef patties look done at internal
temperatures as low as 135°F.
Food Thermometers and This Foods: When measuring the temperature of a
thin food, such as a hamburger patty, pork chop, or chicken breast, an “instant-read”
digital thermometer should be used, if possible. If using an “instant-read” dial
thermometer, the probe must be inserted in the side of the food so the entire sensing
area (usually 2-3 inches) is positioned through the center of the food.
USDA Recommended Safe Minimum
Internal Temperatures:
• Steaks & Roasts - 145°F
• Fish - 145°F
• Pork - 160°F
•Ground Beef - 160°F
• Egg Dishes - 160°F
• Chicken Breasts - 165°F
• Whole Poultry - 165°F

Ramblin’ Travels - Again
Here we are in beautiful Wisconsin north woods. Why there’s no need to bounce
around hither and thither for entertainment because it’s all right here in cool waters,
beautiful scenery, abundant wild life and a bit of luck in hunting and fishing season.
However, mixing some pleasure with business took Marcia and I on some road
trips and I’d like to tell you about them, especially since they were all done via automobile
and an easy days travel with a stay over.
A couple of favorite things lie in the Fox River Valley. Though we missed it this time,
it’s always fun at the Packer Pro Shop & Rotunda. More serious, however, is Gillys (formerly
Strohiems) frozen custard shop and in Oshkosh, right over the bridge on Hwy. 41, is the
Two Brothers eatery where the food is great and very reasonable.
Traveling along found us at the beautiful Brewers Stadium for an exciting baseball
game between the Cincy Reds and the Brew Crew. I bumped into a fellow who had a couple
of founders tickets (including “front row” parking) so our seats were four rows behind the
catcher! Such fun!
Along the way, we were able to get to Waukesha and Jennings Grotto on main
street for a couple of Italian sausage sandwiches, so good I’m drooling over these writings
right now. Always order with extra green peppers, this is to die for!
In the Kettle Moraine Country there’s Hartford (my birthplace). Here is located the
Wisconsin Auto Museum, featuring cars made in this great state. Formerly, it was the Kissel
Kar Museum and that’s what brought me here. My Dad and his brother Ed were engineers
on Kissels in the 20’s until they closed shop in the early 30’s. What a place to visit! Tuckers,
of course has the largest display of Kissels in existence (about 12 cars), Nash, Hudson,
Ramblers (all Wisconsin heritage) and more and more like the huge steam engines being
restored.
Of course, coming home, we had to stop for a half brick of real brick cheese in
Theresa at Widmer’s Factory.
Lomira caught us for a Saturday stop at the Catholic Church and then on home.
So what else? Well, we’ll be at Wausau in a couple days for the Bull Falls Brewery
Trod Jazz Fest and then up to Three Lakes on Sunday to catch Skip Wagner playing two
trumpets at one time at the Oneida Village Inn, a good show they say....is this a great
country or what?

Activists To Celebrate Medicare's Birthday
Happy Birthday Medicare! Medicare is 46 years old. On Saturday, July 30th,
1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Social Security Act of 1965. The
passage of the law established the Medicare program. The first two enrollees and
beneficiaries of the Medicare provision were former President Harry S. Truman and
former first lady Bess Truman. Today over 47 million people are enrolled in Medicare.
On Saturday, July 30th to celebrate the birthday of Medicare the Oneida County
Democratic Party and a coalition of labor unions and activists will be serving pie and ice
cream for a donation in Pioneer Park from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Speakers for the event will
include Senators Jim Holperin and Jon Erpenbach. It's time to celebrate with the WI
Senators and enjoy music provided by Around Midnight and the Northwoods Raging
Grannies.

Utility reconnections available to
those in need during Heat Advisory
Public Service Commission encourages consumers
to call for assistance
MADISON – In light of the National Weather
Service’s excessive heat warning and the possibility of
record high temperatures in Wisconsin, the Public Service
Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) encourages people to
take steps to stay safe by staying cool.
Consumers can take simple steps that help keep
temperatures lower and save energy:
--Keep blinds and curtains closed
--Unplug electronics like computers, televisions and
radios when not in use
--Make sure you air conditioner is clean and maintained by
checking your air filters, air intakes, grilled and radiators
are unblocked.
--Turn off lights when leaving a room
In addition, consumers need to be aware that
Wisconsin law prevents a utility from disconnecting
occupied dwelling units when a heat advisory, heat
warning, or heat emergency issued by the National
Weather Service is in effect. Also, a utility is required to
make reasonable attempts to reconnect service to an
occupied dwelling that has been disconnected for
nonpayment when an occupant states that there is a
potential threat to health or life that results from the
combination of the heat and loss of service. The utility may
require that an occupant produce a licensed physician's
statement or notice from a public health, social service, or
law enforcement official which identifies the medical
emergency for the occupant. Upon expiration of the heat
advisory, heat warning, or heat emergency, the utility may
disconnect service to a property that was reconnected
during this period without further notice if an appropriate
payment arrangement has not been established.
Consumers who have contacted their utility and
cannot reach a payment agreement should contact:

Sorry, No AAUW Book Sale
Due to a change of venue and space limitations,
the American Association of University Women (AAUW)
regrets to announce that their popular Used Book Sale,
scheduled for July 24-27, 2011, has been cancelled.
As an SOA community partner, AAUW has, for
many years, held their book sale during the same week as
School of the Arts at Rhinelander. In the past, the sale has
resided in the gymnasium of the James Williams Middle
School. However, this year with renovations at the middle
school still in progress, the available space at SOA's
temporary 2011 location, Crescent Elementary School, is
not sufficient to support the sale.
The AAUW Used Book Sale is planned for 2012. If
you have books you wish to donate, contact Diane Dei
Rossi at 715-362-1756.

Duck & Goose Hunting
meetings
Hearings will also address possible changes to our
duck hunting zones
MADISON – Waterfowl hunters are reminded of
upcoming public meetings and hearings on the 2011 duck
and Canada goose hunting seasons. Department of
Natural Resources wildlife staff will provide the latest
information on the status of waterfowl and waterfowl
management decisions in Wisconsin.
State waterfowl hunting seasons are structured
within an annual framework set by the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service. With the overall picture on the 2011
waterfowl breeding populations looking very promising,
hunters can expect a liberal season framework in 2011,
according to Kent Van Horn, state Migratory Game Bird
Ecologist.
Across the traditional survey area of the Dakotas,
Canada and Alaska, total duck numbers were estimated at
more than 45 million prior to breeding, which is a record
high and 35 percent above the long-term average.
Canada goose breeding conditions in northern Ontario,
where about 50 percent of the Wisconsin harvest
originates, were average. However, breeding bird counts
were still relatively low in 2011 due to several previous
years of poor production. In Wisconsin the resident
Canada goose breeding population estimate was up 12
percent at 176,095 geese, so Van Horn says hunters can
still expect an abundant goose population this fall.
Seasons to be set by Natural Resources Board, Aug 10
The Natural Resources Board will set the 2011
season structure at its Aug. 10 meeting in Spring Green. At
this time, the federal season framework has not been
announced, but with excellent wetland conditions and
record high continental duck numbers, waterfowl hunters
will likely be seeing a liberal 60-day duck season with bag
limits similar to 2010. The proposed season framework
should be available on the DNR website on August 1.
Comments also sought on duck zone change proposals
"2011 is a very important year because we will be
deciding the configuration of new duck hunting zones that
will remain for the next five years,” Van Horn says.
There are currently four options out for pubic
comment: the current two zone structure; a three zone
structure with the Mississippi River as the third zone with a
split in the season; a three-zone structure with Lake
Michigan as the third zone and a split season structure; or
four zones without season splits. A split means there
would be two separate hunting periods with a break in
between.
"We need to hear from duck hunters at these
meetings as to what their preference for duck hunting
zones and season dates," Van Horn says. “Although the
Fish and Wildlife Service may delay these potential
changes until 2012, we are continuing to request public
input on this topic. We expect final word from the Service
on July 29.”
Citizens can attend one of several public
hearings or submit comments through midnight on Aug. 4
to James Christopoulos, assistant migratory ecologist,

Homeless
Cont. from pg. 1
She explains that teams of individuals will be in
Rhinelander, Minocqua, Eagle River, Antigo, and other
larger communities to locate individuals sleeping in public
places. They have requested support from local law
enforcement to help identify locations known to be
shelters for homeless individuals. “This is just one step in
the process of helping identify and assist individuals in
crisis,” Brewster concludes.
The collected data will assist the community in
understanding the scope and size of local homelessness;
engaging in programs and service development, and in
applying for state and federal funding. This state wide
count occurs twice a year, once in January and once in
July.
The Northern Wisconsin Initiative to Stop
Homelessness (N*WISH) Continuum of Care was
established in November, 2009. This collaborative system
exists to increase awareness and acts to promote and
support the eradication of homelessness in Forest,
Langlade, Oneida and Vilas Counties. N*WISH is
comprised of various state government & public housing
agencies; non profit & faith based organizations as well
as funding and advocacy groups.

Holperin Introduces DNR Secretary Bill
State Senator Jim Holperin (D-Eagle River)
introduced legislation recently (Senate Bill 119) to strip the
Governor of the power to appoint the Department of
Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary and award that
authority to the Natural Resources Board.
“Sportsmen and wildlife groups across the state
along with the majority of Wisconsin citizens have
expressed their support for this bill repeatedly, and it was
approved by the legislature by wide margins last session,
but vetoed,” Holperin said of the measure.
“I realize the current Governor is antagonistic
toward the idea as well, but we who support the legislation
need to make sure it gets active consideration every single
session. We can't give up,” he added.
Holperin said it is widely acknowledged that
while a Board-appointed DNR Secretary would not
eliminate politics from the administration of fish, game and
environmental laws in Wisconsin, the change would go a
long way toward reducing such influence, which is why
the change has enjoyed overwhelming popular support.
“The public has expressed time and again its
desire for an independent DNR Secretary who isn't
beholden to a Governor of either party,” Holperin
concluded. “That's why I've introduced Senate Bill 119
and I hope it will be given serious consideration this
session.”
SB 119 has been referred to the Senate
Committee on Natural Resources and Environment, but
has not been scheduled for a public hearing.

Intensive supervision program for repeat
drunken drivers saves jail days
Eleven counties have intensive supervision programs for
repeat OWI offenders
To break the cycle of repeat drunken driving
through effective counseling, treatment and monitoring,
pretrial intensive supervision programs (ISPs) operating
in 11 Wisconsin counties have saved tens of thousands of
jail days, according to an evaluation provided recently to
the Legislature by the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation (WisDOT).
With a combination of state and local funding,
pretrial intensive supervision programs get repeat
drunken drivers into treatment as soon as possible after
an operating while intoxicated (OWI) arrest and before
conviction. Studies have shown that the effectiveness of
alcohol intervention programs increases as the time
between the arrest and intervention efforts decreases.
To change the behavior of repeat OWI offenders,
collaborative efforts among district attorneys, defense
attorneys, judges, and law enforcement officials have
designed pretrial intensive supervision programs that
meet the needs and conditions of their county.
The WisDOT annual evaluation of the counties’
program activities in 2010 included the following results:
In 2010, 80 percent of the 3,813 drunk drivers
participating in intensive supervision programs
successfully completed their program, which typically
includes: treatment for alcohol dependency or addiction,
monitoring for sobriety, a Driver Safety Plan component
and compliance with court appearances and payment of
fines.
From October 1, 2009 through September 30,
2010 (federal fiscal year 2010), counties with intensive
supervision programs that reported totals saved 74,440
jail days. (Total jail days saved does not include
information from all counties in the program).
Wisconsin’s first pretrial intensive supervision
program for repeat drunken drivers began in 1993 in
Milwaukee County. Other counties that have implemented
programs since the program began include: Kenosha and
Marathon (1998); Waukesha (1999); Racine (2000);
Portage and Sheboygan (2002); Price and Sawyer (2008);
and Iowa and Washburn (2009).
“The pretrial intoxicated driver intervention
program continues to enjoy support from the Milwaukee
County Court judges, who cite the program as one of the
most important resources the courts have for dealing with
repeat OWI offenders,” said Milwaukee County Chief
Judge Jeffrey Kremers. “The court appreciates that
pretrial supervision of clients results in better treatment
compliance.”
The 2010 WisDOT evaluation report on intensive
supervision programs is available online at
http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/library/publications/topic/s

From the Net:
The Darwin Awards
Eighth Place
In Detroit, a 41-year-old man got stuck and
drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first
through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car
keys.
Seventh Place
A 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who
"totally zoned when he ran", accidentally, jogged off a 100foot high cliff on his daily run.
Sixth Place
While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8
foot hole for protection from the wind and had been sitting
in a beach chair at the bottom! When it collapsed, burying
him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach used their
hands and shovels trying to get him out but could not
reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment
almost an hour to free him. Jones was pronounced dead at
a hospital.
Fifth Place
Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell
through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing.
Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed
in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base
of his skull as he hit the floor.
Fourth Place
Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed as he won a
bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver
loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger.
Third Place
After stepping around a marked police patrol car
parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather &
Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of
customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the
counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber
announced a hold-up! and fired a few wild shots from a
target pistol.
The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and
several customers also drew their guns and fired. The
robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics.
Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge
cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23
gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from seven
different weapons. No one else was hurt.
HONORABLE MENTION
Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored
just driving around at 2 A.M. so they lit a quarter stick of
dynamite to toss out the window to see what would
happen. Apparently they failed to notice the window was
closed.
RUNNER UP
Kerry Bingham had been drinking with several
friends when one of them said they knew a person who
had bungee-jumped from a local bridge in the middle of
traffic. The conversation grew more heated and at least 10
men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4:30 AM.
Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge they discovered
that no one had brought a bungee rope. Bingham, who
had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that
a coil of lineman's cable lay near by. They secured one end
around Bingham's leg and then tied the other (!) to the
bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the cable tightened
and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived
his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby
fishermen. Bingham's foot was never located.
AND THE WINNER IS...
Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt ( Paderborm,
Germany) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal
laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes
before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief.
Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to
give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the
relieved beast unloaded.
The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected
defecation knocked Mr. Riesfeldt to the ground where he
struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to
evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be
just one of those freak accidents that proves... 'Shit
happens'

From the Net
1. WILL THE REAL DUMMY PLEASE STAND UP?
AT&T fired President John Walter after nine months, saying he lacked
intellectual leadership. He received a $26 million severance package. Perhaps it's not
Walter who's lacking intelligence.
2. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS
Police in Oakland , CA spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who
had barricaded himself inside his home. After firing ten tear gas canisters, officers
discovered that the man was standing beside them in the police line, shouting, 'Please
come out and give yourself up.'
3. WHAT WAS PLAN B?
An Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a motorist and forced
him to drive to two different automated teller machines, wherein the kidnapper
proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts.
4 THE GETAWAY!
A man walked into a Topeka , Kansas Kwik Stop and asked for all the money in
the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was too small, so he tied up the store clerk and
worked the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him.
5. DID I SAY THAT?
Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn't
control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to
repeat the words: 'Give me all your money or I'll shoot', the man shouted, 'that's not
what I said!'
6. ARE WE COMMUNICATING?
A man spoke frantically into the phone: 'My wife is pregnant and her
contractions are only two minutes apart'. 'Is this her first child?' the Doctor asked.
'No!' the man shouted, 'This is her husband!
7. NOT THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED!
In Modesto, CA , Steven Richard King was arrested for trying to hold up a
Bank of America branch without a weapon. King used a thumb and a finger to simulate
a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in his pocket.. (hellooooooo)!
8. THE GRAND FINALE!
Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east
of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how
hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 foot boat, going. It was very
sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power they applied. After
about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking
someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check
revealed everything in perfect working condition The engine ran fine, the out-drive
went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the
marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water,
he was laughing so hard.
NOW REMEMBER...THIS IS TRUE. Under the boat, still strapped securely in
place, was the trailer!

CESA 8 Substitute Teacher Seminar
Wednesday, August 24, 2011
School districts across the state are finding it
increasingly difficult to hire and retain sufficient numbers
of qualified substitute teachers. In an attempt to deal with
this issue, Wisconsin enacted a rule allowing school
districts to hire non-certified teacher substitutes. To be
issued a permit, however, these individuals must hold a
(four year) bachelor's degree, receive appropriate
training, and be sponsored by a school district.
CESA 8 Office is offering Substitute Teacher
Training Seminar presented by Sherry Petersen and
Sandy Mayernick, Department of Public Instruction (DPI)
endorsed instructors and active substitute teachers. This
one day, comprehensive program will be held on
Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM at
the CESA 8 Office, 223 West Park Street, Gillett, WI 54124.
The seminar will introduce you to the field of substitute
teaching by covering the general expectations of a
substitute teacher, pertinent information on health issues,
successful discipline techniques, hints for working with
students with special needs, along with many ideas, tips,
and recommendations to acquaint you with this rewarding
career.

Registration deadline is August 17, 2011 or when the class
is full. This program will fulfill DPI’s requirement of training
for a person with a Bachelor’s Degree (but not a teaching
degree) and will qualify you for a three-year short term
substitute teacher permit. The cost of the seminar is
$100.00, please register early - attendance is limited.

Purslane - Not just
a weed
Information from Prairieland Community
Supported Agriculture
Think of it as a weed, and you'll be missing
out on one of the most nutritious greens on the planet.
Purslane has more beta-carotene than spinach*, as
well as high levels of magnesium and potassium.
Historically it has been used as a remedy for arthritis
and inflammation by European cultures. Chinese
herbalists found similar benefits, using it in respiratory
and circulatory function.
Recently, it's been found that purslane has
alpha linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid.
Researchers see evidence that these substances
lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as
make the blood less likely to form clots. And, purslane
has only 15 calories per 100 g portion.
World wide there are approximately 19 genera and
approximately 500 species of purslane. The U.S. is
home to 9 genera alone. It is most commonly found in
the warm temperate regions of the northern hemisphere.
Purslane exhibits the most species diversity in Western
North America and South Africa, where it is likely to have
originated.
Part of the reason for its evolutionary success is
that a single plant can produce up to 52,300 seeds.
What's more, purslane seeds can survive for up to 30
years in undisturbed soil.
Several ancient cultures have included
purslane as a part of their cuisine, including those of
Greece and Central America. Russians dry and can it for
the winter. In Mexico it is called verdolaga and is a
favorite comfort food. There, it is eaten in omelets, as a
side dish, rolled in tortillas, or dropped by handfuls into
soups and stews.
Best if used fresh. But, if you must store it, wrap
purslane in a moist paper towel and store in a plastic bag
in the vegetable bin of your refrigerator.
Wash. Remove larger stems. Some recipes use
leaves only. Purslane can be substituted for spinach or
wild greens in lasagnas, filled pastas, and Greek-style
tarts.

August 1 deadline approaches for
many hunting seasons
MADISON – August 1 is an important harvest permit application deadline for hunters and trappers. Applications are due for the following seasons: fall wild turkey, Canada
geese in the Horicon Zone, sharp-tailed grouse, bobcat, fisher and otter. Any fall turkey permits remaining after the initial drawing will go on sale beginning at noon on Saturday, August
27, and will be sold by zone until sold out or the season ends.
2011 Fall Season Dates:
Fall Turkey: statewide Sept. 17 to Nov. 17; Nov. 28 to Dec. 31 in zones 1-5 ONLY
Canada Geese, Horicon Zone: season dates are tentative and will not be set by the Natural Resources Board until August 10. Horicon Zone is proposed for Sept. 16 to Dec. 16 (first time
period Sept. 16 through Oct. 30; second time period Oct. 31 through Dec. 16). Horicon Zone hunters are expected to receive six harvest tags for their time period.
Canada Geese, Collins Zone: The Collins Zone has been eliminated and is now part of the Exterior Zone.
Sharp-tailed Grouse: Oct. 15 through Nov. 6.
Bobcat hunting and trapping (north of Hwy 64 only): Period 1: Oct. 15 through Dec. 25; Period 2: Dec. 26 through Jan. 31, 2012
Fisher: trapping only: Oct. 15 through Dec. 31
Otter: trapping only: North Zone: Nov. 5 through April 30, 2012; central & south zones: Nov. 5 through March 31, 2012
Permits can be applied for through the Online Licensing Center on the Department of Natural Resources website, at all license sales agents, and at DNR Service Centers
(Hours for service centers vary; check the DNR website for service center days and hours of operation; DNR Service Centers are not open on Saturdays), or by calling toll-free 1-877LICENSE (1-877-945-4236). A bobcat permit application costs $6; all other permit applications cost $3.
“Our DNR Call Center staff can also help answer any questions folks may have about the permit application process,” said Dave Argall, DNR permit sales coordinator.” The
DNR Call Center is staffed by live operators from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, and can be reached at (888) WDNR-INFo (1-888-936-7463).
Fall Turkey
There will be 95,700 wild turkey permits available to hunters for the fall 2011 turkey hunting season, the same number that was available during the 2010 fall season. While the
16 percent decline in harvest during the spring 2011 season has elicited some concern among some hunters, turkey numbers rise and fall largely in response to weather conditions that
influence winter survival and poult production. As well, the reduced harvest was partly the result of poor weather conditions during portions of the spring season, which reduced hunter
effort and success, and altered turkey behavior. The limited hen harvest that has characterized recent fall turkey seasons does not have a large impact on turkey populations in the state.
Turkey numbers will recover given mild winters and warm, dry conditions during the critical June brood-rearing period. Turkey hunters can therefore still expect excellent opportunities
to pursue turkeys during the fall 2011 season.
The 2011 fall season will run from Sept. 17 through Nov. 17 for all seven of Wisconsin’s turkey management zones. Pending legislative approval of a proposed rule change, an
extended fall turkey season for Zones 1-5 ONLY will run from Nov. 28 through Dec. 31,. If the extended season is approved, hunters who receive a fall turkey permit in Zones 1-5 would be
able to fill their unused permits during the extended season in the zone for which they were issued. Hunters may use dogs to hunt wild turkeys during the fall season throughout the
state of Wisconsin. The bag limit is one turkey of any age or sex per fall turkey hunting permit (also known as a carcass tag).
New turkey harvest registration procedures
Starting with the fall 2011 turkey season, hunters will be able to register their turkey by telephone or on-line. No in-person registration stations will be available. All harvested
turkeys must be registered by telephone by calling the DNR’s Harvest Registration System at 1-888-HUNT-WIS (1-888-486-8947) or on-line via the DNR website. The phone-in system
will accept either touch tone entry or voice commands (e.g., press or say 1). Hunters will be asked to record a harvest registration confirmation number on their hunting permit at the end
of the call or on-line session. Hunters will still have until 5 p.m. on the day after harvest to register their turkey. The wild turkey page of the DNR website will have updates regarding
specific registration procedures.
Sharp-tailed Grouse
For 2011, 250 sharp-tailed grouse hunting permits will be available. This is a decrease from 2010 when 330 permits were available. The reduction in permits is the result of a
combination of a variety of factors, including a decline in survey numbers throughout the sharp-tailed grouse range, continued habitat loss or conversion, increasingly isolated
populations, and cyclical grouse population dynamics, according to wildlife biologists.
“A couple properties experienced either no change or a slight increase in observations of sharp-tailed grouse; however, survey numbers as a whole were down from 2010,”
said Sharon Fandel, DNR assistant upland wildlife ecologist.
Sharp-tailed grouse management units use the same boundaries and designations as deer management units (DMUs). In 2011, only one unit will have permits available. DMU
2 will have 250 permits. DMU 8, which was open in 2010, will be closed in 2011 due to low survey numbers observed at Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area, one of the focal sharp-tailed
grouse properties in the unit.
“Although there were a few more birds observed this spring in a couple areas, some of our traditional sharp-tailed grouse dancing grounds and managed properties continue
to decline, warranting a cautious and conservative approach in our harvest framework,” said Fandel.
“Because sharp-tailed grouse occur at low densities across the landscape, it is often a challenge to locate these birds,” she added. “Anticipating and allowing yourself to enjoy
the experience of the hunt is encouraged and likely more realistic than the prospect of finding and harvesting a sharp-tail.”
Hunters are reminded to carefully review the zone map and apply only for units that are open. Applying for closed units will result in an invalid application.
