PRESIDENT’S LETTER;
Florence Dick
Welcome to summer...is it ever going to get here?
Car shows are in full swing in spite of the cold, rainy weather. Dave & I went to the Police Surgeons benefit show last
Sunday. TONY was represented by 4 members. There were 5 shows in Suffolk that day, so I guess 4 is a good number.
Our all Ford show is July 21. If you haven't pre-registered yet, please do so as soon as possible. We have a couple
conflicts this year so let's all get out and make ours the best!
Our next meeting is July 1 at the Bethpage library. Hope to see you all there.
SECRETARIES MINUTES: John Cattonar
TONY Meeting Notes:……………………………………………...………………………………………………………………………………………………………
President, Florence Dick called the meeting to order a little early @ 7:45 which began with the usual Pledge of
Allegiance. We all thanked Al Continelli for taking care to set up the coffee and cakes even though he wasn't in
attendance.
Pete Cochrane, treasurer, gave his treasurer's report and the club ended up with $2,071.94 in the vault.
We discussed the need for more members to sign up for our July 21st car show. All checks should go to Dennis
Benfante for the show. The next discussion was about the good time we had at Westbury Gardens and the good
turnout by our club. Next was all the different car shows coming up, especially the fund raiser at St. Anthony's in
Huntington for the families of the three police officers that lost their lives in the last couple of years. Also we talked
about getting together to attend an automobile exhibit at the Ward Melville Heritage Organization in Stony Brook on
August 17th. More information to follow, next month.
The last item for discussion was a possible picnic in July or August with very little interest expressed from the members
in attendance. Since Dennis was not there, we couldn't hand in our July Car Show applications. The easiest is to just
mail it into Dennis. $15.00 for pre-registration, $20.00 the day of the show.
50/50 won by new member: Tom Drechsler $37. for Tom, $37 for treasury - Congratulations Tom!
Meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m. with 23 members in attendance.

Our club welcomes two new members:
Add the above information to your club roster.
Adrienne and Maxine own a red ’55 Thunderbird! Welcome!!

Occasionally club members get calls asking them to use their Thunderbirds or perhaps their other classics,
should they own any, for an ‘event’ to be filmed…. or photographed for magazine or movie ads.
One of our members has been asked to use his car for a photo shoot for next year’s calendar for
“Mother’s who Kick Cancer” – Here’s Dennis Benfante’s red ’57 ….
…….Then, on May 8th, Dennis used his ’57 for another event - he drove a bride to her wedding!
You can sign up and be placed on a list with a film company - if you get called, ‘ perks’ included can be lunch, gas/toll
expenses, insurance, and often, a check!

Newer members may want to save the following information:
REGISTER YOUR CLASSIC CARS WITH A FILM COMPANY
“To complete the registration process, please reply to this Email with several interior and exterior photos of
your automobile. The better the photos, the easier it is to present your vehicle to our clients, and in turn the more
work your car will receive. Please understand that your car cannot be entered into the database until we have
photographs.
When a client is interested in using your vehicle, we will contact you to go over the details of the shoot and see if you
are interested and available. Your vehicle will be fully insured and will be treated with the utmost of respect. A copy of
the insurance binder will be available to you prior to any shoot. You are always welcome to stay with your vehicle for
the duration of the shoot to ensure that it is treated to your satisfaction. You will be paid for the rental and your time.
Payment is determined by location of shoot, length of shoot, and use of vehicle. Our clients request every kind and
condition of vehicle, so we'd be glad to see any other vehicles you may have.

WESTBURY GARDENS CAR SHOW
Sunday, June 2, 2013 - pics, thanks, courtesy of Elliott Weiner (except where noted):
Page
For those who didn't attend the AACA Westbury Gardens Show, here's a quick run-down on what you missed.
First, the gardens were absolutely beautiful as was the weather. Clear blue skies and the all grass field was
green and perfect. There were 350 cars pre-registered and I would guess at least another 200 cars showed up the day
of the show. Our club was well represented. Some of us met at Hicks Nursery Farm Stand. We had 6 T-Birds going in
together, as well as Geppie's '56 Ford Sunliner Convertible, and Bob Ceraso in his Mercury Comet. Once we were
parked (in the wrong place). More Club T-Birds joined us. We had 9 cars representing our club. Pete Cochrane got
there around 10:30 and had to park way off down the field since he didn't come in with the rest of the members He
too, said it was a good day at Westbury Gardens. Most members gathered around the big silver maple tree, (according
to the sign). Pete thought there were 12 to 15 of our cars represented – over ½ dozen scattered around the grounds,
including 6 big birds from Elliott’s club. Many other club members showed up later as spectators, so all in all we had a
good turn-out for our club.
The 1st place award went to Paul Storch from Great Neck with his beautiful bronze '57 Bird. (Arlene Nolan
accepted in his absence and was photographed), 2nd place went to Joe Nolan with his stand out flame red '57 Bird.
3rd place went to Jim Mezey w/ his sharp colonial white ’57 - (bad battery and all).
6
WESTBURY GARDENS SHOW- AS GOOD AS IT GETS!
Also club members winning awards in their different classes,
2nd place in the modified category: Geppie DeSimone with his '56 blue on blue Ford Sunliner convertible,
2nd place also in the custom class, to Steve Siben with his ’63 blue Ghia (previously owned by Lucille Ball).
Elliott, from the Long Island Thunderbird Club, took pics – see below……said "our club was well represented and he
enjoyed being with everyone". - He left at 2:30, as did some others, due to the heat. The AACA forgot to judge the big
birds – his class - from his car club– not good for a show such as this!
To summarize, this is the show you don't want to miss with cars from the 1900's all the way to the '70s.
Make sure you sign up next year.

Frank Hayes attended the Westbury show and stated: “This is a photo of my ‘57 Thunderbird displayed at a Memorial
Day car show in Madison, IN - by my sister and brother-in-law to whom I gave my Thunderbird last fall. They had the
mint ‘57 Chevy restored several years ago. They say it’s the Thunderbird that gets all of the attention.”

ANOTHER CAR EVENT: …then there was the great car & boat show in Greenwich, CT
Greenwich Concours d’Elegance – June 1st ;
Joe Nolan showed his all original ’56 turquoise
Mercury Montclair convertible – his comment on this car show: ”We did not win any awards, but as always at this
event, had a remarkable experience. The judging is exceedingly considerate, fair, open, and honest. All cars, are
presented to the audience at the end of the day, with a complete reading of unique details and history. Each entrant
receives breakfast, lunch, and a scenic boat ride of the harbor. Upon entering the show, you receive a gorgeous metal
license plate with your name and car described on it. You are then, guided to a unique, pre-choreographed parking
space to begin the show. Spectators are charged an entrance fee, not car owners. Instead, it is suggested that you
make a donation to AMERCARES, their sponsor.”

You own a beautiful original classic!

Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD) - July 12th - is an annual celebration to raise awareness
of the role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. The day was first recognized on July 9,
2010 due, in part, to U.S. Senate resolution S. Res 513, sponsored by Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and Richard Burr (RNC).
Hundreds of events were staged nationwide to celebrate the first CCAD. Thousands attended events ranging from car
cruises and shows to small-business open houses and “drive your car to work” displays. The effort was organized by
the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and its Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) and
Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Councils, acknowledged the importance of the automobile in American culture as the
inspiration for much music, literature, photography, cinema, fashion and other artistic pursuits.
The SEMA Action Network (SAN), SEMA’s grassroots enthusiast network maintains a list of scheduled events to
commemorate Collector Car Appreciation Day.

TECH TALK:
CATTONAR'S CORNER:
REGARDING THE FUEL SYSTEM on our Thunderbirds, It's my opinion that you should always use
hi-test gas in your tank. Our engines are over 9.0 compression ratio and even though that's not as high as most 60's
cars, it still will run better on the high test. You don't fill up that often so in the long run, it's not that more an expense.
Also, something to remember, keep the tank full most of the time, it will cut down on the condensation in the tank
which over time creates rust.
Also, a warning. Don't buy any old fuel pump from a vendor or someone over the internet. The old
diaphragms will not last long with the ethanol in today's gases. The pump has to have a recent rebuild or it's a new
pump. Another thing to remember, is you cannot use a fuel pump with a glass filter on the bottom of it. They are for
passenger cars only. Our T-Bird pumps are flat on the bottom.
Last point, if the only fuel filter you are using is the old stone/paper filter, I highly recommend installing an
in line filter somewhere between the fuel tank and the fuel pump. This is an easy installation for most. It will trap any
junk in the gas before it gets to the fuel pump.
Happy T-Birding, JOHN CATTONAR -T.O.N.Y. Secretary

WHITE-WALL CLEANING TIPS:
Most whitewalls turn dingy or yellow because of the leaching of chemicals into the white material. Here’s one man’s
way of cleaning his/her tires. Use an abrasive cleaning pad. A fine or medium sanding sponge works too.
Any good cleaner works OK - Castrol Super Clean, 409, Simple Green, Greased Lightning - just to name a few. Avoid
cleaners that contain bleach. Prolonged use of these cleaners can “dry” the whitewall surface. Do not use products
such as Armor All on whitewall. This could cause slight discoloration. Whitewall surfaces tend to “dry” with time,
heat, ozone, etc. A vigorous cleaning periodically will get rid of the dry surface and help maintain the tire’s beauty.
NOW – how do you clean your car’s white-wall tires?
With foot OFF accelerator, Turn key as to crank engine for 6 seconds. Stop.
With key off, pump gas peddle six times. Stop.
With foot OFF peddle, turn key to start engine.
Car starts!

HOW TO START YOUR CAR AFTER IT HAS BEEN SITTING FOR LONG PERIODS:
more TECH TALK:
For those of you not familiar with how your brake system
works, here is a simple step by step explanation of how
brakes work. When you step on the brake pedal you are
exerting mechanical pressure on a hydraulic cylinder. This
is the master cylinder which now sends hydraulic pressure
to each of the four wheels. The pressure is transferred
through steel and rubber brake lines to each brake
assembly. The hydraulic pressure in each of the wheel
cylinders (or calipers if you have disc brakes) is then
converted back into mechanical pressure to move the
brake pads or shoes to make contact with the brake rotor
or drum. Wheel cylinders on a drum brake assembly push
out the brake shoes within the drum to make contact with
the inner machined surface of the drum. Calipers will
squeeze the brake rotor from each side to slow it down and
stop your car.
The primary advantage of disc brakes over drum brakes
is that they dissipate the heat quicker than drum brakes do.
They also shed water quicker as opposed to a drum
assembly that could hold water after a deep puddle and
cause poor or no braking for a few scary moments.
When doing the brakes on your classic you will have to
decide if you want to keep the brakes exactly as they were
The other most common upgrade is to convert your front
brake drum system to disc brakes. This is more involved
and expensive than the previous upgrade I explained. If you
are doing a basic restoration this may not really be needed
for your car. If you have upgraded other things on your car
such as the engines horsepower, suspension or other
systems and originality is not critical to you then a disc
brake conversion would be a suggested improvement.
There are kits available these days that keep the
installation labor to a minimum and are less expensive than
you might think. In some cases you might be surprised how
for only a relatively few more bucks you can convert to disc
as opposed to a complete drum brake rebuild.
Adding a power brake booster is another way to upgrade
your brakes. Most cars can be easily converted to a power
system with this installation. It drastically reduces the
amount of pedal effort required to get your car stopped
quickly. Many customers have had this conversion done to
make it easier for their wives to safely drive the car.
As far as the steel brake lines, many companies now offer
pre-bent lines ready to go in either regular steel or stainless
steel. If these are not available for your application, new
lines can be made up from pre made lengths of brake line
or cut to fit from a roll of tubing and bent to fit as needed.
When making up the steel lines that run along the chassis,
we use either copper/nickel alloy or coated lines that will
prevent any rust from the outside elements.
14
Whether you’re just maintaining your “driver” or
completely restoring a vehicle, you’re going to want to give
the proper attention to the brake system for obvious
reasons. Hydraulic brake systems will deteriorate over
time, particularly if the vehicle has been sitting. All those
soft seals that keep the fluid from leaking will dry out and
loose their flexibility if they’re not used. The presence of
moisture can also lead to corrosion of the system’s metal
parts. Brake fluid is naturally hydroscopic (meaning it
wants to absorb moisture). Moisture will promote rust in
the system which can cause wheel cylinders and disc brake
calipers to bind or seize causing poor or no braking. Rubber
brake hoses can also maintain proper outward appearances
while becoming soft from the inside out. Rust will also
plague steel brake lines on the chassis from the outside and
can ruin friction surfaces of brake drums and rotors. In
general, long-term dormancy, even when your car is stored
indoors, can be hard on brake systems.
when your car left the factory or do some upgrades to
make them and your car safer. Up until the early/mid
1960’s most cars had a single master cylinder. This was a
single reservoir that supplied pressure to all four wheels.
The draw back to this design is that if you lost pressure in
any one part of the system you would essentially loose all
braking power. In the mid 1960’s, manufacturers started
using a dual master cylinder. This separated the front
hydraulics from the rear so that if you lost either one due
to a bad line, hose or cylinder you still had the other. This
was a very important safety advancement that all of
today’s cars still use and you should consider for your
classic. It takes away a small portion of originality but I
believe the safety gained is well worth it. The original single
master cylinder could always be re-installed down the road
if a purist buys the car from you.
