Sri Lanka Korea joint Research on Oral Cancer: Donation of a Cone Beam CT Scanner A ceremony was held recently in Yonsei University, Seoul Korea to support Sri Lanka on Oral cancer research. Oral cancer is the commonest cancer in Sri Lankan patients with a poor prognosis. Despite the fact that Oral cancer is the commonest, research in this important area is not adequate due to lack of infrastructure facilities for advanced research. The oral cancer research Institute of Yonsei University under the guidance of its Directress Professor Jin Kim has extended help through Korean research foundation to establish the centre for research in oral cancer in the Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka with her long standing research collaborator Professor WM Tilakaratne as the founder Director. The ceremony was organized to donate research equipments to the newly established centre in Sri Lanka. The highlight of the function was the donation of a cone beam CT scanner (CBCT) to the research centre by VATECH Global Company in Seoul, Korea. This is the first CBCT in Sri Lanka. The chief guest of the occasion was Sri Lankan ambassador to Korea, His Excellency Tissa Wijeratne and Dr Kim Young‐Hwan, a member of Korean National Assembly was the guest of honour. The ambassador highlighted the help extends from Korean government to uplift the standards of various sectors in Sri Lanka. He was hopeful that Korean experts would help the Sri Lankan counterparts in finding new treatment strategies for the commonest cancer in the country. Professor WM Tilakaratne was very thankful to the Korean Researchers, especially Professor Jin Kim, Directress of the Oral Cancer research Institute of Yonsei University and donors (VATECH and other companies) for helping to give a better hope for oral cancer victims in Sri Lanka. Prof Jin Kim reiterated the fact that they are determined to help Sri Lanka in developing oral cancer research collaborating with Professor Tilakaratne and his team of researchers. Dean of the Yonsei College of Dentistry, Member of the Korean national Assembly Dr Kim Young‐Hwan, President of the Yonsei Medical and Dental School also addressed the meeting. Dr AM Attygalla, Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon also attended the ceremony. This project of national interest initiated as a result of oral cancer research collaboration between Professor Jin Kim of Yonsei University and Professor WM TIlakaratne from University of Peradeniya. A large number of research equipments have already been donated to the Centre for research in Oral Cancer in the Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya through the project. The Installation ceremony of the CBCT in the Faculty of Dental Sciences was held on 27th of November 2013 under the patronage of Professor UB Dissanayake, Dean Faculty of Dental Sciences and Professor WM Tilakaratne, Director, Centre for Research in Oral Cancer, University of Peradeniya. This facility will be immensely helpful for the diagnosis, treatment and research in various aspects of diseases in the oral and maxillofacial region.
