Civilians honored
for time in service

Civilian employees were
recognized for length of service, from five to 40 years and
beyond, at a ceremony May
20 at the community activity
center.
Col. Todd J. Fish, garrison commander, thanked the
awardees for their years in
the civil service, highlighting
the important role they play in
the Army.
“Today’s ceremony is a
reminder to all of us in the
military community that our
civilians serve as part of our
Army and are an integral part
of our military,” he said.
He praised the untold
amount of dedicated service
to both our nations and our
militaries.
“Without each and every
one of you and your commitment and hard work over the
years, we would not be able to
sustain this garrison mission.
“And to those of you who
are serving from our host nation: Thank you. You truly
represent two nations; one
team, and are valued members

“But it’s worth it,” he continued. “This is a tremendous
honor for me — not just the appointment, but the opportunity to
be secretary of the greatest Army in the history of the world.”
As secretary of the Army, Fanning has overall responsible
for organizing, training and equipping Army forces.
“It’s a responsibility I take seriously,” Fanning said. He
defined his job as making “sure you’re recruiting the best, that
you’re training them properly and then equipping them with
what they need to do the job right and to get them home.”
Fanning, 47, served as chief of staff to Defense Secretary
Ashton B. Carter from March 2015 until he was appointed by
the president as undersecretary of the Army June 30.
Fanning served as acting secretary of the Air Force from
June 21 to Dec. 30, 2013. Before that he was undersecretary
of the Air Force. He also served as deputy undersecretary of
the Navy from 2009 to 2013.
“Over the past several years, I’ve seen firsthand why Eric
Fanning is one of this administration’s most trusted and capable appointees and one of the Pentagon’s most dependable
civilian leaders,” Carter said.
Carter administered the oath of office to Fanning Wednesday afternoon in the Pentagon.
“I look forward to working with him as he strengthens our
Army, builds on its best traditions and prepares our ground
forces to confront a new generation of challenges,” Carter said.
Fanning thanked everyone in the room for helping him
along the way. “They say it takes a village ... it took many
villages to get me here,” Fanning said.
Fanning said he is looking forward to “getting back to
work” with Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Mark Milley.

Volunteers honored for contributions

The garrison recognized and honored the contributions volunteers and
volunteer-run organizations make to
our community during the annual U.S.
Army Garrison Wiesbaden Volunteer
Recognition Ceremony at the Community Activity Center, here, May 13.
Hour-by-hour, and day-by-day, Army
community volunteers donate their time
and talents to make things happen in
Wiesbaden — a gift that is making a
difference in more ways than one.
According to ArmyVolunteer Corps
coordinator, Mary Cheney, in 2015
more than 3,072 registeredvolunteers,
donated 68,757 hours of service, to 273
different organizations in the Wiesbaden garrison, saving our community
$1,619.914.92.
The numbers speak volumes; however, the effect on a community is truly
immeasurable.
“You may never know the profound
effect you may have on a person’s life. A
kind word, a gentle gesture,or a listening ear can mean so much to someone;
it can lift spirits and touch lives,” said
Command Sgt. Maj. Larry Addington,
garrison command sergeant major during his remarks.
Community members were individually recognized as volunteers of the year,
from the following five categories; military, civilian, retiree, youth and family.
Federica Lemauk says she was “incredibly surprised” to be recognized
as the civilian volunteer of the year
among the nine nominees. “I see myself
as the one who helps other volunteers
get what they need,” said Lemauk who
volunteers as the ArmyVolunteer Corps
program assistant at Army Community
Service. “I love to volunteer, because
I love to work, and the Army’s system
allows you to do meaningful work as a
volunteer. Volunteering allows me to do
things I love doing.”
Air Force Lt. Col.Thomas Davison,
who volunteers his time as a Sunday
school teacher and Cub Scout pack 65
chairman, was recognized as the military
volunteer of the year. Davison says it’s
challenging, but important to him, to
make the time to volunteer.
Organizations such as the Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts, the Transatlantic Council,
Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, the
USO, Civil Air Patrol and the Wiesbaden
schools benefit from the generosity of the
Young family who was recognized as the
volunteer family of the year.

Ben, 10, said volunteering is about
keeping organizations, the schools, and
the kids thriving.
“If one of us volunteers, you get the
whole package,” said Lisa.
Robert Mentell was recognized as
the retiree of the year for his passionate
support to military retirees in Europe. “I
continue to serve to support the 14,000
military retirees here in Europe, of which
7,000 are Soldiers,” Mentell said.
“Volunteers like Mentell bring value
to our communities, they are part of
our readiness,” said David V. Fulton,
president of the Army in Europe Retiree
Council, who nominated Mentell. Mentell has lived the Army values throughout
his career and carries those now into the
community. “What the Army teaches us
in uniform goes with us when we are
out of uniform,” Fulton said.
Ami Rose Heiges was named the
youth volunteer of the year. Heiges, who
was nominated by the USAG Wiesbaden
religious services office, donates her
time and talents volunteering for Vacation Bible School, religious education
programs, and serving as a Girl Scout
assistant, Daisy, and Brownie Troop
volunteer.
Entire service organizations were
also recognized for inspiring volunteerism and for their contributions to
the community between April 1, 2015
and March 31, 2016. Recognized were,
Boy Scouts, Barbarossa District, Wiesbaden office with 3,014 total volunteer

The ceremony closed with a presentation to AFN Wiesbaden’s radio-show
host and emcee of the ceremony, Paul
“the Brit” Hughes. Hughes was presented a golden microphone plaque for
his contributions to the community. The
award was a surprise to Hughes who
said he was humbled by the recognition.
The annual volunteer shopping spree,
courtesy of the Defense Commissary
Agency, was won by Christine Thomas.
The three-minute supermarket sweep
will take place, June 28, at 8 a.m.
The event was hosted by USAG
Wiesbaden Army Community Service’s
Army Volunteer Corps program and
featured music from the U.S. Army
Europe, Woodwind Quartet, and the
posting of colors by Wiesbaden High
School JROTC Color Guard.

Commissary holiday hours
The Commissary will be open on the
Memorial Day holiday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Official travel reminder
Travelers who have booked and arranged for official travel using the Defense
Transportation System, or DTS, are required to provide copies of official travel
orders to the local Sato Travel office within
72 hours of the scheduled flight. Without
official travel orders, invoices cannot be
reconciled and submitted to Defense Finance and Accounting Services Indianapolis for payment. If the traveler is unable to
present the orders to Sato, then the official
who directed the travel is responsible for
doing so. For details, contact your local
official travel office.
New visitor sign on
New visitor pass procedures are in place
at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Installation Access Control Points. Visitors will be
issued a new escorted visitor paper pass at
ACPs located on Clay Kaserne, Hainerberg
(Shoppette Gate), Amelia Earhart, McCully
Barracks and the DAGGER Complex. The
new passes will be scanned for access to
any USAG Wiesbaden installation except
Giessen Distribution Center and Mainz
Kastel Storage Station, where regular
sign on procedures will be used. The new
passes include enhanced security features
and are valid for up to three days. Sponsors
are required to escort their visitors while
on the installation and are limited to four
individuals. Visitors no longer need to signout. To obtain a visitor’s pass, each guest
must present a valid passport or European
Union nationally issued iden-tification card
and be photographed.
Practice bicycle safety
Bicycle operators and passengers on
U.S. military installations must wear an
approved safety helmet properly fastened
under the chin. Other bicycle safety rules
include not using cell phones or wearing
listening devices; using a headlight that
emits a white light and a taillight that
emits a red light; wearing light-colored
clothing or reflective accessories when
riding at night or in low light; and bicycle
wheels must have two reflectors mounted
180 degrees apart on the spokes. Bicycle
pedals must have reflectors designed and
placed to be visible from the front and rear
of the bicycle.

what, that is no small feat,” Fish said.
The Best Warrior competition’s
purpose is to promote morale and unit
cohesion, and is part of the process
to select the best-qualified NCO and
Soldier to represent IMCOM at the
Army-level Best Warrior competition.
Each participant competed in
three days of field events, followed
by a board. The events included the
Army Physical Fitness Test, 12-mile
ruck march, an obstacle course, day
and night land navigation, and a situational training exercise.
The board was a panel of IMCOM
sergeants major, who scrutinized each
NCO’s and Soldier’s record, military
bearing, appearance and knowledge of
Army history, regulations and current
events. The events were continuous
and the competitors had little time
for sleep.
“The competition is more about
competing against yourself than each
other,” said IMCOM Command Sgt.
Maj. Jeffrey Hartless. “It’s learning
what your weaknesses are and capitalizing on your strengths. It’s becoming
a better Soldier. Having a never quit
attitude in all that you do, training,
life issues and in combat. I’m proud
of each of the competitors and looking
forward to the next phase.”
Hagens studied and prepared for
the competition while completing his
normal duties and attending college
classes. He attributes his success so
far partially to his leadership, who
helped ensure he had time to train.
“I competed to challenge myself
and better hone the basic warrior tasks/
drills that I do not regularly train on,”
Hagens said. “Once actually being at
the competition, I knew what I had
to accomplish so I focused on those
objectives, while getting to meet new
Soldiers and have a great time.”
Those competing in the event were
well-trained and persevered in every
environment according to Hartless.
“Nobody quit, no matter how hard
it was … and they made it through
it” said Hartless. “The Best Warrior
Competition recognize Soldiers who
demonstrate commitment to the Army
values, embody the warrior ethos and
represent the Army of the future.”
The IMCOM winners were announced at an awards ceremony May
6 at the Fort Sam Houston Theater.
Hagens was not surprised when the
announcement was made.
“I anticipated [winning] it because
I worked hard and was confident in
my ability,” said Hagens. “I looked
at it with the mentality that this was

training for the next event. I had
already had it in the bag and had fun
while doing it.”
At the award ceremony, IMCOM
Commanding General Lt. Gen. Kenneth Dahl gave advice to the Soldiers
and gave them a message to take
home.
“We need to expect a lot from
you,” said Dahl. “We expect you to be
rugged, we expect you to be Spartan,
and expect you to thrive in austere
environments.”
You should not expect to handled
too softly by your leaders,” he continued, “you have to be rugged. This
is not a game.”
The other IMCOM Soldiers competing were: Pvt. 1st Class Mercedes
Nearing from Fort Wainwright,
Alaska, the Pacific Region Soldier
of the Year; Spc. Tyler Nelson from
U.S. Army Garrison West Point, New
York, the Atlantic Region Soldier of
the Year; Sgt. Jason Garrison from
Fort Wainwright, Alaska, the Pacific
Region NCO of the Year; and Staff
Sgt. David White from Fort Bliss,
Texas, the Central Region NCO of
the Year.
Hagens will move on to the U.S.
Army Cyber Best Warrior competition
later this year. The winner of ARCYBER will compete at the Army-level
Best Warrior Competition.
Sgt. Derrick Adams from U.S.
Army Garrison Rheinland-Pflaz was
named the IMCOM Soldier of the
Year. This is the second year in a
row that Europe Region has taken top
honors at the IMCOM Best Warrior
Competition.

Klaus Herbst, an electrician with the Directorate of Public Works, has seen a lot in his
40-year career, from Pope John Paul II and
George W. Bush to the fall of communism.
“When the wall came down, I was RIF’ed to
Wiesbaden,” he said. Since then he hasn’t been
sick a single day. He chalks up this achievement
to his dedication to his job.
“It keeps me healthy,” he said.
Charles Hughes, chief manpower division, resource management, started as an
Army lieutenant in 1972 as a HAWK Missile
Battery Platoon Leader in Key West, Fla.
Going into civil service after the military
was not part of his plan, but he likes what
he does.
“I didn’t originally want to continue working
for the military after I left the uniformed services, but here 24 years later, I’m still working
in the civil service, enjoying my work and the
people I get to work with.”
Hughes credits his success to his boss
and others he has worked with over the years
and much of it “to the resourcefulness I had
learned through many jobs and years in other
Army jobs.”
Richard Bolten, a child and youth program
assistant employee, who began his career 40
years ago with the Air Force in security policy
and law enforcement, said it has been the
people he’s worked with who have kept him
going and contributed to his success.
“Everywhere I’ve worked, people made
the big difference,” he said. And the icing
on the cake? “When kids come back and say
‘Thank you.’”

2nd MI hosts VALEX
New organization connects
Americans with host nation

The 2nd Military Intelligence Battalion hosted their
semi-annual Team Validation Exercise (VALEX) on
Baumholder Training Area
April 23-25.
The exercise provided U.S.
and NATO counterintelligence
and human intelligence military
members from across Europe a
valuable opportunity to practice
their skills, share best practices
and validate their teams for future operational requirements.
Almost 200 Soldiers attended the exercise, including many
from NATO allies throughout
Western Europe and the Baltic
region.
Human intelligence collection teams from Germany,
the United Kingdom, Spain,
the Netherlands, Estonia, and
Lithuania all traveled from their
respective countries to take part
in the exercise.
With role players acting as
embassy officials, local college
students, criminals, maneuver
commanders, and many other
characters, the trainers conducting the event were able to run
participants through a realistic,
dynamic scenario designed
to test the soldiers’ technical
competence and professional
maturity. The exercise had
nearly 300 “meets” conducted
and almost 200 reports written
in just four days of training.
The VALEX also included
nightly training on communications systems, investigations, rapport building, and
other topics. Instructors from
theater-level commands such
as European Command and
United States Army – Europe
taught several classes, while
seasoned veterans from within
the battalion provided briefings
focused on topics that impact
the unit’s daily operations.
Every NATO ally provided
capabilities and operational
briefs to the training audience,
further enhancing interoperability between those nations
in attendance. Each country expressed gratitude for the training, further expressing their
desire to attend future iterations
of the exercise September 2016
and April 2017.
Each intelligence soldier
that participated in the event
learned something invaluable
to take back to their respective
units and field office platforms,
whether it was how to build a
relationship with a host nation
official, write a clear and accurate report for a decision maker,
or keep cool in a tense situation.

“A lot of people have
problems because the German laws are a little different
than what they are used to,”
said McFarland, the organization’s president. “We can help
people with such things as
understanding their contracts
and finding insurance to cover
long-term care in Germany.”

“We want people to come
to a Stammtisch and see who
we are and what we’re all
about,” she said. “If they have
a good feeling about the group
they can become a member.
Anybody who would like to
help out is welcome to join us.”
“Really, we’re about helping people feel more comfortable in their home in
Germany,” said ReighardOrf. “We’ve also found that
Americans who retire and stay
over here sometimes fall into
problems with such things as
health insurance and long-term
care.”
“After talking to and with
different U.S. military retirement associations we’ve found
that when older retirees need
hospice care or other longterm care they may run into
problems,” said McFarland.
“So we know there is a need,
because on the German side,
if you’ve never worked on the
German economy, you may
not be able to get long-term
care. We’ve worked with the
insurance companies to offer
inexpensive long-term care
through a group contract available to our members.”
Other issues retirees may
face overseas is accident insurance and paying for the cost
of funeral expenses, she said.
“Through their membership in
Touchpoint they have access
to less expensive accident,
funeral and long-term care
insurance.”
The two long-time community volunteers said they also
want to provide opportunities
for cultural and nutritional outings such as visits to unusual
German Christmas markets,
featuring healthy cooking
lessons and meeting other
specific needs.
“I have fun doing this, and
it’s rewarding,” said McFarland. “You get to meet great
people.”
“It’s also about giving
back,” she said. “That’s how I
grew up. It’s important to help
others because you may need
help yourself sometime.”

Army: Soldiers may now
wear headphones at gym

Soldiers jogging or lifting in the gym may now
be allowed to listen to music through small headphones or ear buds, according to Army Directive
2016-20, released May 6.
Acting Secretary of the Army Patrick J. Murphy
signed a memo that authorizes Soldiers to listen
to music on a variety of devices and ear pieces
while doing personal physical training inside
gyms, though the memo does give final word on
the new policy to installation or unit commanders.
“Effective immediately, unless the unit or
installation commander prohibits otherwise,
Soldiers may use headphones, including wireless
or non-wireless devices and earpieces, in uniform
only while performing individual physical training in indoor gyms or fitness centers,” Murphy
wrote in the memo.
The headphones cannot be more than 1.5
inches in diameter and the memo states violators
may be subject to administrative or disciplinary
action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
To push music through “conservative and
discrete” earpieces, Soldiers are also permit-
ted to “wear electronic devices, such as music
players or cell phones” on their waistband, in
accordance with AR 670-1. That regulation says
the color of the carrying case for such a device
must be black.
The directive also permits Soldiers to wear
a “solid black armband” to hold their electronic
device, but only while in the gym or fitness center.
When Soldiers leave the gym or fitness center,
however, the arm bands, the music devices and
the headphones must be put away.
Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey said
the new policy is something Soldiers have told
him they wanted for a while.
“This change came about because Soldiers
stood up at one of my town halls and asked about
it,” Dailey said. “If we can make changes that
improve morale and they don’t adversely affect
discipline, I’m all for it.”
The memo applies to Regular Army, Army
National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers. It’s
expected that the new rules regarding the wear
of music devices and headphones in installation
gyms will be incorporated into the existing uniform
policy, AR 670-1, by the Army’s G-1.

How to have a legal home based business

Lately, there has been a huge issue
with illegal home based businesses in
the Wiesbaden community.
As the installation commercial
affairs officer it is my responsibility
to coordinate home based businesses
(HBB).
I’m looking for your help to make
some of the currently illegal businesses
operating in government quarters, which
includes off post housing, legal. Simply
email me at donald.a.rosenkrans.civ@
mail.mil so I can set you up with all the
information and paperwork that needs
to be done to keep you out of trouble.
The email packet that you request
will include all regulations, helpful
hints, forms, and a tax advisor for tax
advice off-base.
If your HBB is being run out of
housing, the following conditions need
to be adhered to:
1) The business is only conducted
within the requestor’s own apartment,
not the common areas.
2) Visitors are not permitted to use
resident parking.
3) You may not solicit door to door
or distribute advertising material in
mailboxes.
4) You must have a copy of the
approval letter from the garrison commander, AE FM 201-70F, and AE
FM 210-70G while conducting your
business
5) No modifications will be made to
Government-owned or leased quarters.
The customers of these HBBs should
ensure an agent or vendor has AE Form
210-70F, AE Form 210-70G and the
Garrison Commander’s authorization
before signing the agent or vendor
onto an installation, inviting the agent
or vendor into the consumer’s quarters
or entering into a contract.
Customers should also report companies or individuals allegedly engaging
in unfair business practices to myself.
Prohibited activities by HBB include:
– Door-to-door solicitation of residents of government-owned or -leased
quarters if the residents have not extended a personal invitation.
– Unsolicited contacts made in
person or by telephone. This does not
prohibit contacting current (not past)
customers or responding to requests for
customer service.
– Initiating contact to make appointments with or solicit military and
civilian personnel who are on duty by
government telephone, fax, or by sending e-mail to a government computer,
unless a relationship already exists
between the parties.
– Government-owned or leased
quarters will not be used as a business
showroom, warehouse, or storage
facility.
– No exterior parts of Governmentowned or -leased quarters (for example,
doors, windows, hallways, exterior
walls) will be used to advertise products
or services.
– Use of U.S. Forces-registered POV
for HBB activities and will not bear signs
advertising HBB goods or services.
– Use of tax- and duty-free gasoline,
whether purchased with AAFES gas
coupons or at AAFES service stations,
for HBB.
– The military postal service may not
be used to send or receive any parcels
or correspondence related to the HBB.
This does not preclude customers from
receiving goods ordered through an
HBB and properly mailed directly to
individual customers by a company
through either the U.S. or German
postal service.
– May not purchase goods for
demonstration, resale, or operation (for
example, ledger books, computers) from
Approved HBBs

It happens: Motorcycle safety key to saving lives

As a young, thrill-seeking, soon-to-be Army aviator
getting ready to start flight school, I did the stereotypical
thing and bought a motorcycle. I’d ridden dirt bikes
only a handful of times growing up and thought a
street bike wouldn’t be much different. Eager to get on
the road and start riding with friends that already had
motorcycles, I signed up for the required Motorcycle
Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course.
Before the course started, I bought a beautiful
new Honda CBR600RR and parked it in the garage. I
couldn’t wait to finish the course so I could start riding
it. Looking back, I should have put more thought into
what type of motorcycle would best suit a new rider
instead of focusing on speed and style. Still, while
my skills in the BRC weren’t amazing, I was learning
quickly. I just kept telling myself, “I’ll get used to my
bike. It’ll be different.”
After passing the BRC, I rode my bike every chance
I got. I considered myself a very safe rider; I would
only ride in fair weather and always wore all of my
personal protective equipment, including my helmet,
jacket, gloves and riding boots. Since I was waiting
to start the primary phase of my flight training, most
of my riding was from home, to class and back home.
The rest was done on weekends with friends in groups
of about four to eight riders. With every mile I put on
my bike, my confidence grew.
A few months after completing the BRC, my friends
and I signed up for the SportBike Rider Course. I
learned about the mechanics and fundamentals of sport
bike riding and believed my skill was matching my
confidence level. Every weekend I looked forward to
the group rides, but I remained in the back because
I wasn’t as comfortable as some of the other riders
at higher speeds. I had yet to have any close calls or
near misses while riding and rarely thought of the
saying, “There are those who have crashed and those
who will.” Then one day, on a typical weekend ride,
it happened.
We were a group of six riders traveling on a back
road about 70 mph. As usual, I was in the back of the
pack when I went over a patch of gravel on the right
side of the lane. I slid off the lane and into the grass.
At this point, I was still upright on the bike, but my
mind was racing. I didn’t remember being taught
what to do if I ever ended up off road on a sport bike.
I thought if I could just grab the clutch and slowly get
back on the road that I should be OK.
I squeezed in the clutch lever and slowly started
making my way back to the road. Then my front tire
hit a small hole on the side of the road and I went
over my handlebars, landing on my right shoulder
and sliding for what felt like forever.
When I finally came to a stop, I just laid face up
on the side of the road, trying to figure out what the
hell had just happened.
My fellow riders immediately doubled back for
me. At this point, adrenaline was rushing through my
body and I felt fine. I just kept thinking that if I can
get up and walk I wouldn’t get kicked out of flight
school. My buddies, however, having clearer heads,
wouldn’t let me get up.
Instead, they called an ambulance to take me to the
emergency room, where I was treated and released
within a few hours.
Fortunately, the only injuries I sustained that day
were a separated shoulder, bruised lung, sprained
ankle and what looked like a jellyfish under the skin
on my hip that stayed for several months. As I said
earlier, I always wore all of my PPE. I have no doubt
it helped save my life.
The state troopers investigating the accident informed me while I was in the ER that things could
have been much worse. After I tumbled off the bike,
I’d slid between a 10-meter gap between a pine tree
and an exposed sewer drain.
Luckily, my recovery was quick and I was able to
finish flight school. Looking back, though, getting a
sport bike as a cherry rider was not the smartest decision — despite all the precautions I was taking. I’d
heard a lot of accident stories, but I always thought,
“Eh, it won’t happen to me.” Well, it did. Any time
I think something can’t happen, this story serves as a
painful reminder that it can.

warmer, now’s the time to plan your

The staff at Wiesbaden Outdoor
Recreation has been working hard
to provide a multifaceted schedule
of unique travel destinations and opportunities for outdoor fun. Highlights
include mountain biking, skydiving,
kayaking and visits to Euro-Disneyland
and Croatia – just to name a few.
“Coming up this weekend during the
long Memorial Day weekend (May 27
to 30) is the Garmisch Jamboree,” said
Jason Bennett, Wiesbaden Outdoor Recreation’s acting program manager. “Basically this is all of the Outdoor Recreations
from all over Europe coming together
to pool their resources and provide a
rich assortment of recreational choices
including hiking, canoeing, kayaking,
mountain biking and rock climbing.
“For those who have never been
canoeing or kayaking, we want to give
people the confidence to go out on the
water,” Bennett said, adding that once
people feel comfortable they are invited
to “push it a little harder” and to tackle
more challenging bodies of water.
The price of the Garmisch Jamboree
trip, costing $199 for adults and $99 for
children, includes round-trip transportation, camping and use of equipment
during the various activities.
Outdoor Recreation heads south
June 4 and Aug. 13 for skydiving in
Bitburg. Participants are invited to
fly the friendly skies with a tandem
master. Jumping from some 3,000 to
4,000 meters above sea level should
offer “a beautiful view of the Eifel
Region,” Bennett said. Cost is $299 per
(for jumpers) or $49 (for non-jumpers).
Downhill speedsters are invited to
join Outdoor Recreation for a day of
mountain biking in Stromberg on June
5, Aug. 7 or Sept. 24. The mountain bike
trips, which include round-trip transportation, equipment use and a guide,
cost $45 each and provide bikers with
10 kilometers of single track including
numerous jumps and other challenges.
“The track is well suited for all
levels of abilities,” said Shelly Hake,
Outdoor Recreation director.
Families will want to take advantage of trips to Disneyland Paris June

Berlin and Prague trip. “It’s a great
introduction to these cities. People can
go on the guided tours – or they can
just explore on their own.”
“We really want to encourage community members to consider our trip to
Rovinj, Croatia, on June 30 to July 4,”
he said. “This is a fantastic opportunity
– right in the middle of the peak travel
season – getting to stay in a resort on
an island with all kinds of amenities.”
The trip, including round-trip
transportation, three overnights in a
four-star hotel with breakfast and dinner, a sightseeing trip to Pula and other
options, is the perfect family getaway,
Bennett said, explaining that while
the resort on St. Andrew (Sv. Andrija)
Island is set in the midst of wildlife and
nature “away from the party-goers,”
offering walks to nearby islands and
sights – active night-life opportunities
are not too far away.
People who make reservations for
the Croatia trip by June 1 pay $549 per
adult, $429 for ages 5 to 13 or $189
for ages 4 and under. After June 1 the
cost is $599 per adult, $449 for ages

“We’re going to do our best to get

indoor skiing facility. There’s no need
to wear different clothes – everything
will be available at the facility,” he said.

camping gear – to head out on your own
local adventure. The staff will be glad

Photomarathon, May 28. Similar to
a scavenger hunt, photographers use
creativity and detective skills to a make
their way across Wiesbaden to capture
10 assigned subjects under a single
theme that will be announced the day
of the event. Competitors are allowed
to use public transportation, cycles,
skateboards etc. to get from place to

Suspension bridge
A visit to Germany’s longest
pedestrian suspension bridge in

Many times when people study
a map, they reminisce about where
they’ve been, or dream of where
they’ll go.
When Connor Buchheit studies a
map he thinks of what more he needs
to know.
Connor, a seventh grader at Wiesbaden Middle School, is one of
54 finalists competing at the 2016
National Geographic Bee championship, May 23-25, in Washington,
D.C., representing the Department of
Defense Education Activity.
“I’m excited, he’s excited, but a
little nervous, too,” said his mother
Kathleen Buchheit who is attending
the event with her son.
This year’s Geographic Bee is
Connor’s first time competing at the
national level. He earned his spot in
the competition after winning the
local Geography Bee in Wiesbaden
and then scoring the highest in two
separate rounds of selection tests administered first at the DoDEA-Europe
level and then DoDEA-wide.
“He’s taking the competition very
seriously,” Kathleen said, “but he
doesn’t know, what he doesn’t know,
until the competition starts.”
Connor said he was always interested in geography. “My parents
bought me a globe when I was five,
and I liked it. I made it a point to
memorize the U.S. state capitals, then
I went on to memorize the world’s
capitals,” he said.

competitions intended to inspire
students to be curious about the
world. Competitors need more than
rote memorization skills to answer
questions such as:

Brazil? In terms of export income,

Robotic arm helps

WASHINGTON — “This is the most
advanced arm in the world. This one can
do anything your natural arm can do, with
the exception of the Vulcan V,” said Johnny
Matheny, using his right hand to mimic the
hand greeting made famous by Star Trek’s
Leonard Nimoy. “But unless I meet a Vulcan,
I won’t need it.”
Matheny was at the Pentagon, May 11,
2016, as part of “DARPA Demo Day,” to
show military personnel the robotic arm he
sometimes wears as part of research funded
by the Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency. DARPA is an agency of the U.S.
Department of Defense responsible for the
development of emerging technologies for
use by the military.
Matheny lost his real left arm to cancer,
and he said had doctors not cut it off the
cancer would have spread to the rest of his
body. “I’d have been dead in three months,”
he said.
Before you are dazzled by the “mindcontrolled” aspect of Matheny’s robotic arm,
one of the most striking things you notice is
that the arm is not attached to his body with
the regular fiberglass cup and straps common
to most prosthetic arms.
Instead, there is piece of metal sticking out
of the end of his bicep onto which the robotic
arm can be attached. The metal device has been
surgically implanted into his arm, into the bone.
That technique is called “osseointegration,” and
he’s likely the first in the U.S. to have that done.
But what’s really amazing about the robotic
arm he wears is that he doesn’t have to use his
right hand to tell it what to do. Instead, he uses
the muscles and nerves in what remains of his
left arm to send signals to the robotic arm and
hand, which then respond, just like a real arm.
“This is part of the Revolutionizing Prosthetics Program, where we set out to restore
near-natural upper extremity control to our
military service members who have lost limbs
in service of our country,” said Dr. Justin C.
Sanchez, director of the Biological Technologies Office at DARPA. “The goal is to control
the arm as naturally as possible.”
Sanchez said Matheny has had some procedures done to re-map some of the nerves in his
arm so he is able to control them in a different
way, to make use of the robotic arm.
“But it is a more natural way to control
this arm, compared to switches or levers,”
Sanchez said.
Matheny bragged on the arm’s capabilities.
“So far this thing works great,” he said. “It’s
the arm of the future. This arm here, it can do
45 pounds. I can take on any one of these big
old burley Soldiers around here. We’ll get a
45 pound weight and keep going. I never miss
a beat.”
The real advances in the research being done
by DARPA, Sanchez said, goes beyond the
myoelectric control that Matheny is now using
to control his robotic arm. Instead, Sanchez said,
they want to provide real, direct control by the
brain over the arm, over other prosthetics, or
over any device.
“We are thinking deeply about how direct
neural interfaces interact with complex military
systems,” Sanchez said.

Texas – At the post gas station
I saw a vehicle, with a young
girl driving it, stop to fill up at
the pump next to me. I noticed a
small flag in the window with two
blue stars on it, and assumed that
the stars reflected the rank of the
Soldier that owned the vehicle.
I was surprised that a major
general would have a daughter
that young.
Soon after that incident, I was
hired to support an Army program called Survivor Outreach
Services. When I reported to
work, I noticed one of the ladies
at work had a little purple and
gold lapel pin, and another had a
pin that was a variation of the flag
that I had seen at the gas station.
I was curious: the flag on the
car had two blue stars, the flag
on one lady’s pin had one blue
star and one gold star and another
simply had one blue star. Why
were all the flags different, why
were there two different stars,
why did only these two ladies
in the office have the flags? I,
in my infinite wisdom, was too
embarrassed to ask what any of
these things meant.
Fortunately, one of my first
assignments was to develop a
web page that clearly defined
the different versions of the flags
and pins for theAmerican public.
I am an Army veteran, with
one deployment, and was married to an active duty Army
soldier, with eleven deployments, and never understood
the momentous meaning these
symbols had. It blew my mind
that I’d never learned about what
these symbols represented.
The Service Flag was designed and patented by World
War I Captain Robert L. Queissner of the 5th Ohio Infantry
whose two sons were serving
on the front line. The flag was
designed to be displayed in the
front window of peoples’homes,
to indicate the number of family
members serving the war effort as
members of the Armed Services.

practice of wearing or displaying
service flags or gold stars has
diminished greatly… but the
meaning of the symbols is as significant as it was 100 years ago.
Each time you see a blue
service star, you should be aware
that the person displaying it has
a loved one—possibly in harm’s
way—supporting the freedoms
we enjoy every day. A gold service star indicates that someone
in that person’s family has lost
their life while serving.
Please take a moment, when
appropriate, to thank the bearer
of the star. A simple “I appreciate your family member’s
service,” or “My sympathies for
your loss,” is all it takes to remind the bearer that the service
or sacrifice means something…
even if the practice isn’t widely
recognized anymore.

about preventing and controlling high blood pressure.
When you have high blood
pressure, the force of blood
pushing against the walls of
your arteries is too high. When
you’re active, it is normal
for your blood pressure to
increase. Once the activity
stops, your blood pressure
should return to your normal
range. When it doesn’t, you
may have high blood pressure.
Unfortunately, the diagno-
sis of high blood pressure is
based on blood pressure readings. If you don’t get regular
medical care or check your
blood pressure regularly, high
blood pressure can go undetected for years. It is often not
discovered until some organs
start to show the effects of long
standing high blood pressure.
According to NHLBI, some
common high blood pressure
complications are:

•Eye damage
•Heart attack
•Heart failure
•Stroke
A blood pressure check
is quick and easy. It can be
done in your health care
provider’s office or clinic.

Children are screened every

Best surface for running? The one that feels better

The truth is that the jury’s still
out on whether running on a softer
surface has less impact on joints and
muscles. Some research suggests it
might not actually matter, and the
forces that impact your lower body
on various surfaces such as asphalt,
concrete, and grass don’t increase
knee pain or injury risk. One explana-

tion is that your body automatically
adapts to the surface you’re running
on. That means you’ll instinctively
strike harder on softer surfaces, and
strike softer on harder surfaces. On
the other hand, some evidence suggests that running on softer surfaces
(such as grass) reduces stress on your
muscles and joints.
“But it feels better when I run on
soft surfaces,” you might say. That
difference in feeling is likely due
to the different kinds of muscles, or
stabilizers, you use when running
on softer surfaces, which creates a
sensation of less impact, although
the overall impact on your body is
the same.
That’s not to say that you shouldn’t
run on soft surfaces if it makes you feel
better. Feeling better on a run goes a
long way. But remember to be careful;
softer surfaces such as trails, grass, or
sand tend to be more uneven, which
can pose a greater risk of strains and
sprains.
When it comes to injury prevention
and recovery, it’s also important to
consider other factors such as wearing
the right running shoes. And be sure
to increase your running intensity
and volume gradually to help avoid
injury too.
