Landeskommando Hessen leadership
hosted members of the U.S. Army Garrison
Wiesbaden command for a day at Hessentag, May 26, to reinforce German-American
friendship during the annual festival held in
the city of Herborn this year.
Landeskommando Brig. Gen. Eckart
Klink and Col. Todd J. Fish, USAG Wiesbaden commander, along with members
of his family, attended the event to learn
more about the Bundeswehr’s participation.
Hessentag is the oldest and largest state
festival in Germany. It began in 1961 as a
place for refugees and migrants to come
together with residents of the state of
Hessen — which was created less than 20
years prior — in 1946.
The state’s then-prime minister, Georg
August Zinn, had a motto for integrating the
new residents into the community: “Hesse
ist, wer Hesse sein will,” or “A Hessian
is anybody who wants to be a Hessian.”
Hessentag is held in a different city each
year. That first year 40,000 people attended,
and it has only gotten more popular, with
the number of visitors reaching more than
a million most years.
The festival featured a ferris wheel, street
performances, food and drinks and a variety
of ways to learn more about the service and
capabilities of the German military. Interac-

Wiesbaden schools add early release day
By USAG Wiesbaden
Community Schools
Beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, Department of Defense Education Activity – Europe’s
Wiesbaden community schools will implement a
one-hour early release each Thursday.
The change, which is being implemented on a
community-by-community basis across DoDEAEurope, is aimed at introducing job-embedded
professional learning and collaboration time for
teachers.
During this collaboration time, educators will
meet to analyze assessments, share best practices,
assign students to interventions for the following
weeks, design aligned standards-based differentiated instruction and work to make sure every
child learns to his/her greatest potential. They
may also receive training and staff development
on research-based strategies, technology, or programs to employ for improving student learning
outcomes.
Wiesbaden students will still exceed the
expected amount of instructional time per-year.
The school district is doing this for numerous
reasons, including the implementation of College and Career Ready Standards in math and
literacy, the introduction of new technologies in
the classroom and adopting practices that leverage
the additional resources now available through
DoDEA’s Restructuring for Student Achievement.
The expectation for educators today is that
teachers will collaborate with one another for
the purpose of improving student achievement. Research supports the positive effect on
student achievement when additional teacher
collaboration programs have been implemented.
To facilitate these collaborative sessions, many
school districts throughout the United States have
instituted a one hour late-start or early-release
for students.
DoDEA already has schools in the Pacific,
Americas and in Europe using this model.
For more information, or if you have questions,
please contact your student’s principal.

Vigilance reminder
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden community members
are reminded to remain vigilant and practice personal
protection measures at all times. If you see something, say
something immediately, call the MP desk at (0611) 705114 or the Polizei at 110. Visit the USAREUR Reporting
Portal at www.eur.army.mil/eureport/default.asp.
Personal protective measures:
– Stay informed via official channels, news reports,
etc., about current potential threats.
– Avoid large public gatherings such as demonstrations
or rallies. If you encounter such gatherings, leave the area
as quickly as possible.
– Keep a low profile and try to “blend in” to the local
environment. In public, avoid wearing or carrying overtly
American or military clothing or other items.
– Be unpredictable. Vary routines such as routes and
departure times to and from work.
– When traveling, become familiar with local emergency
numbers and places that could serve as refuge, such as a
military installation, embassy or police station. Learn or
carry a few key phrases in the local language, such as “I
need a police officer” or “I need a doctor.”
– Instruct your family and associates not to provide
strangers with information about you or your family.
– When leaving office or home, be sure to tell someone
where you’re going and when you expect to get there.
Crime Prevention
Protect your home by taking the following measures:
– When not present, lock doors and windows (close
rolladens).
– Ensure proper exterior lighting (motion sensors).
Leave a light on inside your home.
– Do not open your home to solicitation attempts.
– Report any suspicious activity in the neighborhood.
At events
– Carry bags and purses with the flap or lock side closest to your body.
– Do not leave bags, purses or jackets unattended or
draped over the back of a chair as a thief will take advantage
of your inattention to strike.
– Large crowds bring out pickpockets. Avoid becoming
a victim by taking a few precautions: Carry only the necessary cash, debit, or credit cards to accomplish your planned
task and distribute your cash, cards and cell phone in different locations on your body to avoid losing everything.
Off-post uniform wear reminder
Spc. Courtney Gonalez, AFN Wiesbaden, explains AFN radio broadcasting to guests while
on air in the studio at the station’s open house event, May 26.
Wearing uniforms off-post is prohibited. There are only
a few exceptions to the no uniform wear off-installation
restriction. Uniform wear is not authorized while riding
motorcycles/scooters, bicycles or while on foot, or any
form of public transportation. Carrying backpacks or other
items that convey Department of Defense affiliation is
discouraged. DoD personnel in off-installation hotels may
wear uniforms when departing or arriving in an enclosed
vehicle, but uniform wear in public areas of hotels such
as breakfast, dining rooms or fitness rooms is prohibited.
Wearing uniform while escorting children to/from or
waiting at off-installation DoDEA bus stops is prohibited.

boat,” said Dirk Mlaka, principal of the Erich Kästner-Schule
in Wiesbaden. “Germans and
Americans sit in one boat,
and it only works if they all
work together. They have to
stay in the rhythm, and look
at each other, or else the boat
won’t go.”
The students received a
short paddle lesson on land
from instructors at the Wassersportverein (water sport
club) Schierstein, and a safety
briefing, then with paddles in
hand, everyone boarded four
boats each identified by a different team color.
The lessons began as soon
as the boats paddle away from
the docks.
One instructor sat perched
at the front of each boat, beating a drum to keep cadence,
some calling the count in
English, “one...two...three...
four...” and some in German,
“eines...zwei...drei...vier...” as
teams pulled their paddles in
unison and practiced for the
race that would take place that
same day.
Ava, a ninth grader and
third-year German language
student at Wiesbaden High
School said the yellow team
really came together to win.
“We just believed we could
do it!” she said. “We all
have to paddle, at the same
exact time, it has to be very
specific – it really unified us
just paddling one big boat,”
she said.
Roswitha Timbrell, German language teacher for
Wiesbaden middle and high
school says for language
students, working together in
real situations produces real
communication.
Paddling a dragon boat was
only one opportunity to start
conversations. Students also
enjoyed meeting one another on
land over a post-race barbeque
at EKS.
“The race was cool and it
was interesting to get to meet
American students and get to
know them a little bit,” said
Stephanie, an EKS student.
Jacob, a ninth-grader at
WHS and first-year German
student thought the experience
was wet, but fun. “When you’re
in an American school overseas, you’re kinda in a bubble,
and when you go on these type
of trips, it’s like popping the
bubble to see what other kids
are doing.”
Timbrell agrees. “You can
talk about cultures in theory,
but when you get out and spend
time with one another that’s
when the real connection happens,” she said.
The dragon boating activity
is the fourth partnership activity between WMS and EKS
this year.
The students from EKS
attended the WMS Blue Ribbon recognition ceremony,
participated in a joint holiday
music program, and attended a
performance of the WHS Little
Mermaid.
“This is a very special partnership because through these
activities the students get in
contact with the language and
meet Americans. It is like a
student exchange here in Wiesbaden,” Mlaka said.
The friendship between
the schools is expected to
grow as they remain committed to finding new opportunities for students to connect.

Travel alert for Europe
The U.S. Department of State has released a travel warning for all of Europe.

Be smart
and safe
in summer
The summer months are a time
to be with friends and family, taking
the opportunity to relax, travel and
enjoy water sports and barbecues.
It’s a chance to enjoy a break and
recharge for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Sadly, it is a period of risk. Last
summer, we lost 71 Service members
between Memorial Day and Labor
Day, due to a variety of fatal accidents,
with the preponderance of mishaps
related to private motor vehicles or
water sports. Many of these incidents
could have been prevented with more
aggressive trip planning to reduce
fatigue, adherence to proper personal
protective equipment standards, or a
more moderated use of alcohol.
Our people are our greatest asset
and we must encourage them to treat
safety as an imperative and to manage
properly or eliminate circumstances
where they or others are put at risk.
Please remind your team members
about the importance of exercising
good judgement and looking out for
one another so that we can ensure that
summer is a safe and happy time for
all. We must give our best efforts to
keep our military and civilian personnel and their families safe.
As we soon begin the summer,
I would like to offer personally my
sincere gratitude for the outstanding
accomplishments we have achieved
and to extend my warmest wishes to
you and your families. Have a fun,
rewarding and safe summer.

Claims guidance for storm damage
By Keith Bracey
USAREUR/Wiesbaden Legal Center
The Wiesbaden area recently experienced prolonged storms which
eventually led to widespread flooding.
If you are a Military member or DoD
civilian who suffered loss or damage to
your personal property during the recent
flooding, you may be entitled to receive
compensation for your loss through the
U.S. Army Claims System.
The USAREUR/Wiesbaden Legal
Center Claims Division is prepared to
assist affected Military/DoD Civilian
members and their families with their
personal property claims.
Individuals who suffered loss or
damage to personal property due to
the flooding may file a claim with the
Army if:
a. The personal property was located
in government-assigned quarters when
it was damaged. Government-assigned
quarters is defined as housing provided
in kind by the government or privatized
housing (including private rental or
government leased housing).
b. You are a proper claimant under
the law. A proper claimant is an Active
Duty Army Servicemember, an Army
Reservist on active duty at the time of
the loss, or a civilian employee of the
Department of the Army.
For those interested in filing a claim,
the following information will help en-
WHERE TO GO FOR ASSISTANCE
If you have questions or need assistance filing a claim, please
contact the claims personnel at the Client Services office on the
ground floor of Building 1023 North on Clay Kaserne. Representatives are available to assist you in filing your claim. Hours of
operation are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday. Contact our office
at DSN: 537-0664/0675 or Civ (0611) 143-537-0664/0675 or visit
our facebook page, at www.facebook.com/WiesbadenClaims/, for
more information.
sure your claim is quickly and properly
adjudicated and paid.
First, it is important to remember that
claimants must try to mitigate or lessen
damages to their belongings caused by
the flood and save whatever they can.
Wet items should be dried promptly so
that they do not deteriorate or mildew.
If clothes are dirty and wet, claimants
must attempt to wash and dry them. Take
wet items outside to have them dry in
the yard if necessary. Further damage
caused by failure to salvage these items
cannot be compensated for.
Second, notify your insurance
company. Private renters, homeowners, or personal property insurance is
designed to cover this type of flood
damage. Claims regulations require
that individuals with private insurance
covering the loss must make a demand
against the private insurance carrier first
before the claims office can adjudicate
the claim. If you do submit a claim with
your private insurance and it makes a
payment, you may still be able to submit
a claim with the Army for the amount
of the deductible. Furthermore, if the
value of the loss exceeds the amount
of insurance coverage, claimants may
also file a claim with the Army. In either
case, a copy of the insurance settlement
must be included in the claims package.
Third, substantiate your damage.
You should take pictures of the damage incurred to your belongings. Write
down what was damaged and how it was
damaged. You may want to document
the damage shortly after it occurred, as
well as after your mitigation attempts.
Take pictures of the water marks left on
the walls if applicable. Take any other
photos you may think would be useful
as evidence of flood damage in your
home. Remember, the more evidence
you can provide about what you had,
Spargel
in season
The town of Schwetzingen, near Mannheim
and Heidelberg, is famous for its white asparagus (Spargel) and now
is the time to enjoy it in
all of its glory. Restaurants throughout town
feature various soups,
dishes and desserts
concocted with the vegetable which was cultivated by the ancient
Egyptians, Romans and
Greeks. While in town

the item’s value, and steps you took to
save the property, or to explain why
you did not keep it, the easier it is to
pay your claim.
Fourth, do not automatically throw
away items that appear to be damaged.
Remember mitigation and substantiation. Also, the more expensive the item
the better it is to keep it until your claim
is settled. In some cases, you may be
able to place it out on your balcony or
in your carport. However, if the item is
a health hazard, you may and should
dispose of it, though you should contact
the claims office first before doing so.
Fifth, when you file your claim,
substantiate the amount you are asking
for. This is where purchase receipts are
useful to show original value. However,
you also need to substantiate current
replacement value with prices from the
internet, AAFES, or commercial sales
catalogs. For cleaned and salvaged
items, submit cleaning bills. If you take
loads of laundry to be washed at the
laundromat, keep a detailed log of how
many loads you wash and how much you
spend on the machines and detergent.
Finally, you have two years from
the date of incident to file your claim.
However, if you wait the full two years,
there is a possibility you will have some
difficulty in substantiating your losses.
We recommend you file sooner rather
than later.

“I immediately learned

he values German-American

Scouts host ceremonies at special location

Marking milestones with
traditional Boy Scout ceremonies are an important part
of scouting whether living

Forty members of Wiesbaden’s Boy Scout Troop
107 recently conducted two
special ceremonies during a
weekend scouting event and
service project at Luxembourg American Cemetery
and Memorial, in Hamm,
Luxembourg.
Cub Scouts transitioned
into the next phase of scouting during a Crossover Ceremony, and Boy Scouts were
selected by their peers to the
Order of the Arrow, the Boy
Scouts of America’s “National Honor Society.”
In the presence of some
5,076 fallen service members
of World War II buried at
Luxembourg Cemetery, and
under the light of an almost
full moon, four Cub Scouts
took the oath and received
their new neckerchiefs.
“I can’t think of a better
way to symbolize the journey
of a Cub Scout as they cross
over and officially become
a Boy Scout,” said Adam
Bloxom, assistant scoutmaster, who was one of the scouts
selected for the Order of the
Arrow.
Adding to an already
memorable experience was a
special guest of honor, Helen
Patton, the granddaughter of
Gen. George S. Patton who is
buried in the cemetery.
Patton praised the Scouts
and leaders for doing what they
do, and in turn was presented
a Troop 107 neckerchief and
designated an honorary scoutmaster of the day.

It may be helpful, and less stressful on pets when they are given time to get used to a crate or pet carrier prior to boarding a flight.
Traveling with pets takes planning
Story by Chris L. Green
405th AFSB
Logistics Readiness Center
Summer PCS travel season will
soon be upon us. Families traveling
with pets are reminded that special
considerations and preparation must
be made.
Regarding flights returning to
the United States, anyone traveling
with pets should be aware that Patriot
Express flights to Baltimore-Washington International airport will
only accommodate 10 first-come,
first-served pets per flight.
Commercial air travelers may
elect to transport a pet as checked
baggage; however, from May to
September, the heat can make
travel difficult for pets. In fact, many
airlines don’t allow pets aboard
flights as checked baggage or as
cargo when temperatures are high.
For most airlines, pet embargoes
take effect when the temperature is
forecasted to be above 85 degrees at
any point of travel — origin, transit
or destination.
Families traveling with pets
this summer must become familiar
with the airline’s pet embargo and
acceptance policies before making
travel arrangements. In some cases,
advanced reservations are required.
Be sure to give yourself ample time
to prepare pets prior to travel. Most
airlines have pet safety programs
identified on their websites that
provide tips for travel.
Tips include booking a direct
flight when possible, feeding your
pet a light meal six hours before
flight time, and making sure your
pet has had plenty of exercise before
putting it in a crate.
It is the traveler’s responsibility
to make arrangements to get pets
to the desired destination, as pets
do not have a government travel
entitlement. This means, the cost for
travel is on the onus of the family.
This may require starting a savings
plan well ahead of time so families
don’t have to leave pets behind to a
new home.
For more information or questions regarding the policy, contact
the Wiesbaden Transportation office
at DSN 546-6080, civ 0611-143546-6080.
Another item to consider when
traveling with pets is ensuring all
shots are up to date and all records/
paperwork are in order. Check with
the Veterinary Clinic on Clay Kaserne for more information.
Some tips from the clinic include:
•
The rabies vaccine cannot be
within 30 days of expiration at
time of travel.
• An unalterable form of pet
identification is mandatory. The
best way to take care of this is
to ensure pets have the ISO
microchip. The microchip and
rabies vaccine must be done at
the same time.
• For families going somewhere
that is a rabies-free area (such as
Hawaii, Japan, Guam), the process can be up to eight months
before pets can enter without
having to go into quarantine.
Germany does not require a quarantine, but does require that cats and
dogs be accompanied by a certificate
issued by a licensed veterinarian at
point of origin which states that the
animal was vaccinated more than 30
days but less than 12 months prior
to travel. It must be written either
in German or be accompanied by a
German translation.
Community members can reach
the veterinary facility by calling civ
(0611)705-6283 or DSN 337-6283.
Being aware and prepared will
ensure the flight is a positive experience for both family members
and pets.

Hodges participates in ‘America Days’
By Capt. Russell Gordon
JMTG-Ukraine
Public Affairs
L’VIV, Ukraine — Lt. Gen. Ben
Hodges, commander of U.S. Army Europe, participated in the America Days
cultural festival here May 28 to highlight
American training with the Ukrainian
Land Forces.
Hodges, in remembrance of Memorial
Day, began the morning by participating in
a wreath laying at the Lychakiv Cemetery
with the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine,
Geoffrey Pyatt, the mayor of L’viv and
senior Ukrainian army officials.
The delegation of individuals honored the burial sites of Ivan Franko, a
popular Ukrainian poet and writer, three
U.S. servicemen and lastly a memorial
to Ukrainians who fought in the AntiTerrorist Operation zone or ATO, the
name commonly given for the war in
eastern Ukraine.
“It’s a reminder that the United States
has fought hard all around the world to
protect freedom and to support people
who want freedom. The memorials today
remind me of the importance of the training mission that we have and the terrific
Soldiers from the California National
Guard and from the 3rd Battalion 15th
Infantry Regiment out of Fort Stewart and
the others who are here helping Ukraine
defend itself,” Hodges said.
Following the wreath laying, Hodges
attended a street fair in front of the
L’viv Theatre of Opera and Ballet and
met with Soldiers from the California
National Guard.
The Soldiers stood in front of a static
vehicle display, spoke with members
of the local community and posed for
pictures.
“I think we were the largest attraction.
We had about 40 to 45 people there with
us at any given time. It was overall very
well received. I had a blast with it. It
was long days, but the comments were
positive. It made us feel better about
what we’re doing here. We took a lot of
pictures with people. I think everyone
who was there stopped, talked to us,
and took a picture with us,” said Sgt.
Andrew VanAntwerp, a computer detection systems repairer with the California
National Guard.

Take steps to avoid Zika, especially if pregnant
By Mr. Kirk Frady
Army Medicine
Zika is a mosquito-borne
virus closely related to yellow
fever, dengue, and West Nile
viruses. A Zika virus outbreak
was identified in Brazil in
early 2015; since then, it has
spread to more than twenty-five
other countries in Central and
South America and the Caribbean. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC)
issued a Level 2 Travel Alert
(Practice Enhanced Precautions) for areas where Zika virus
transmission is ongoing. This
includes the recommendation
that women who are pregnant,
or trying to become pregnant,
consider postponing travel
to any area where Zika virus
transmission is ongoing.
What can I do to
prevent catching it?
The best way to prevent
diseases spread by mosquitoes is to avoid being bitten.
There is currently no vaccine
Page 12
for Zika. Mosquitoes that
spread Zika virus bite mostly
during the daytime and prefer to bite people, and live
indoors and outdoors near
humans. The best prevention
is to minimize standing water
in items like buckets, bowls,
animal dishes, flower pots
and vases.
What if I am pregnant
or want to become
pregnant?
If you are pregnant and plan
to travel to an area with ongoing Zika virus transmission,
consider postponing travel
until after delivery. If you are
pregnant and traveled to an
area with ongoing Zika virus
transmission, your provider
can arrange for testing to see if
you were infected, even if you
never experienced symptoms.
If you are not yet pregnant,
there is no evidence that Zika
infection prior to conception
poses a risk for any future
pregnancies.
Herald Union
If you think you’ve
been infected, what
should you do?
If you think you may be
infected, see your primary care
provider immediately. If you
have recently traveled abroad,
tell your healthcare provider
when and where you traveled.
Your healthcare provider may
order blood tests to look for
Zika or other similar viruses
like dengue or chikungunya.
What are the
symptoms?
• About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus become
ill (i.e., develop Zika).
• The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash,
joint pain, or conjunctivitis
(red eyes). Other common
symptoms include muscle
pain and headache. The
incubation period (the time
from exposure to symptoms)
for Zika virus disease is not
known, but is likely to be a
few days to a week.
• The illness is usually mild
with symptoms lasting for several days to a week.
• Zika virus usually remains
in the blood of an infected person
for a few days but it can be found
longer in some people.
• Severe disease requiring
hospitalization is uncommon.
• Deaths are rare
Treatment
• There is no current vaccine available to prevent Zika
infections.
• There is no specific treatment for Zika infections;
instead, treat the symptoms.
• Your healthcare provider
will recommend supportive
treatment such as rest and
rehydration.
• If you have Zika, prevent
mosquito bites for the first week
of your illness.
• During the first week of
infection, Zika virus can be
found in the blood and passed
from an infected person to
another mosquito through
mosquito bites.
• An infected mosquito can
then spread the virus to other
people.
What are the Army
and DoD doing?
Department of Defense
(DoD) labs are enhancing
techniques to test mosquitoes

Program equips students for careers
Career Practicum students are expected to keep their schedule for the
month along with timesheets in personalized folders that stay on the Wiesbaden High School campus while they go to work.
By Erin Gavle
and Jackie Workman
Special to the Herald Union
They say it’s never too early to start
planning for the future. Several students
at Wiesbaden High School took this to
heart when they signed up for the Career
Practicum class.
The class, which is offered only to
seniors, goes through two regular class
periods, and allows the students to pick
an off-campus location to intern or assist
at during the school day.
“The purpose of the curriculum for
the Career Practicum class is to get
students in a work [area] of interest to
them—something they might be doing
in the future or be going to school for—
and put them in a [situation] out, away
from school, in the community, with
different adults and people and not just
students, [so] they learn what it means
to be on a work sight,” Jim Campbell,
class advisor, said.
Members of the class of 2016 picked
a wide range of work sites including
outdoor recreation, the library, AFN,
Hainerberg Middle and Elementary
schools, and the public affairs office.
Positions are limited, and depend on
the needs of the individual work sites
and how many students show interest
in that location, so not everyone can
always get their first choice. However,
most students are able to find a job where
“part of their job is something they’re
planning on doing in the future,” said
Campbell.
Cameron Noble, a senior who went to
the Clinic during CP noted that his time
as an intern helped him gain experience
in the medical field, which he plans to
have a career in. “[My supervisor] gave
me homework before I’d leave where
[he’d] say ‘Look up this, look up the
causes of flu, or different kinds of moles
and stuff, and then the next [class] I’d
have to report [to the doctor] what it
says. If I don’t do a good job, [he] says
I gotta redo it until he’s satisfied.”
As an intern, his responsibilities were
to, “Basically show up on time, listen,
observe [what a patient’s] symptoms
are, [and] do what [the doctors] say,”
Noble said. His position also afforded
him the chance to observe minor medical procedures.
“All those research things [my
supervisor] made me do helped so I
can determine what to do and which
way is better for treatment and such,”
Noble said. “It’s kind of cool because
not everyone gets that opportunity to go
in there as a high school student to see
things you’ll be doing in the future.”
Although he was placed in his first
choice job, Noble recommends that
future CP students don’t limit themselves to one area of interest. “Give [Mr.
Campbell] about three different subjects
for you, so if you don’t get the one you
want, you’ll [have the] other two that
you might get picked for.”
Kristina Churilova, another CP student, learned the value of this advice first
hand. Although she wanted to learn more
about foreign affairs when she signed
up for CP, a change of plans resulted in
her interning at the post library. Still, she
feels good about her year in this program.
“It was a funny situation,” Churilova said. “[So] I was supposed to do
something with the German schools,
because I wanted to do something with

the international relationships. But they
didn’t have work available on the days
we were working.”
Churilova, who is a native Ukrainian
and Russian speaker, found that “the
only thing that was available for me
was the Library, and plus I wanted to
improve my English, so I decided that
[it would] be the best choice.”
Campbell must also make choices
about the students who join the program.
“Because it’s for two periods, and
it’s an elective class, we have to have
students that have passed all their requirements,” Campbell said. “They have
to be seniors because seniors are a little
more mature and more responsible.”
The high school students went into
the workforce guided by Campbell as
a supervisor, who helped navigate and
place them in their designated working
locations.
“We’re always looking for work
sites that have never been part of the
program,” he said.
Many of the students still have four
years of college before they start work-

ing full time but by participating in this
class Campbell said, “They’re seeing an
opportunity and taking it, and making
the best of it, and that really prepares
kids for their freshman year.
The more worksites that are available
to the students, the more opportunities
there are, not only for the high school
interns, but also for employees in the
Wiesbaden community. Campbell continued, “If there’s a work site supervisor
that wants to be a part of the program
maybe we can match a student up with
some interest.”
Students like Churilova, found the
experience ultimately beneficial, “I
think that some of the skills I learned
[at my work site], I can use in other
[jobs], and plus it’s like working experience. It’s at least something that you
can put on your resume, saying that,
‘Oh! I worked there! I have something
to show!’”
(Editor’s note: Erin Gavle and Jackie
Workman were career practicum students working in the Public Affairs Office during the 2015-2016 school year).

Spotlight
on men’s
health
By Wiesbaden Army Public Health
June is more than just the start of summer fun,
it is a time to recognize the men in our lives as we
celebrate both Father’s Day and National Men’s
Health Week in the same month. The purpose of
Men’s Health Week is to heighten the awareness of
preventable health problems and encourage early
detection and treatment of disease among men
and boys. This month gives health care providers,
public policy makers, the media, and individuals
an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek
regular medical advice and early treatment for
disease and injury. The following tips from the
Center for Disease Control are given to help them
achieve their health and fitness goals:
Get Good Sleep
Adults need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of
chronic diseases and conditions, such as diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, obesity and depression.
Also, poor sleep is responsible for motor vehicle
and machinery-related accidents.
Toss out the Tobacco
It’s never too late to quit tobacco. Quitting
smoking has immediate and long-term benefits.
It improves your health and lowers your risk of
heart disease, cancer, lung disease, and other
smoking-related illnesses. Also avoid secondhand
smoke. Inhaling other people’s smoke causes
health problems similar to those that smokers have.
Move More
Adults need at least 2.5 hours of moderateintensity aerobic activity every week, and muscle
strengthening activities that work all major
muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest,
shoulders, and arms) on two or more days a week.
Eat Healthy
Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every
day. Fruits and vegetables have many vitamins
and minerals that may help protect you from
chronic diseases.
Tame Stress
Sometimes stress can be good. However, it
can be harmful when it is severe enough to make
you feel overwhelmed and out of control. Take
care of yourself. Find support. Connect socially.
Stay on Top of Your Game
Did you know that women are 100 percent
more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventive services than men?
See your doctor or nurse for checkups. Certain
diseases and conditions may not have symptoms,
so checkups help identify issues early or before
they can become a problem.
For more information on National Men’s
Health Week, contact Maj. Rosemary Wosky, Army
Public Health Nurse at civ (06371) 9464-1374.
Gluten only bad for some
By Health.mil
Consumer demands for gluten-free foods have flourished
over the past 10 years. Sales of
gluten-free food and drink have
increased from $5.4 billion to $8.8
billion over the past two years,
according to a global market
research firm. Certified glutenfree foods are typically three to
four times more expensive than
foods that are not certified.
Why are gluten-free foods
receiving all of this attention?
Some people feel that eating
gluten-free foods will help them
lose weight faster and give them
more energy (amongst many other
claims). This is partially why the
demand for gluten-free foods has
skyrocketed in the past decade.
Gluten is a general name
for the proteins found in wheat
(examples include durum,
Page 14
emmer, spelt, einkorn), rye,
triticale and barley. Oats will
generally contain gluten from
cross contamination unless they
are certified gluten-free oats.
Gluten is “the glue” that holds
starchy foods (bread, cereal,
pasta, etc.) together to help
them maintain their shape and
structure.
Despite claims, eating a
gluten-free diet will not help you
lose weight. It is not the miracle
diet that many have touted. The
only groups of individuals who
will absolutely benefit from eating a gluten-free diet are those
affected with celiac disease or
Herald Union
gluten sensitivity. Celiac disease
is an autoimmune disorder — it
is not a food allergy. When an
individual with celiac disease
consumes gluten, it leads to
damage in the small intestines
which can prevent absorption
of nutrients from foods that are
consumed. Common symptoms
include weight loss, diarrhea,
constipation, abdominal pain,
bloating and skin rashes. When
someone with gluten sensitivity
consumes gluten, they can get
many of the same gastrointestinal symptoms as those with
celiac disease, but there is no
damage to the small intestine.
Roughly one percent of
the U.S. population has celiac
disease, yet in 2013, a market
research company found that
29 percent of Americans were
cutting back or avoiding gluten.
Mental health
hospitalizations
lowest in years
By Armed Forces
Health Surveillance
Branch
A new study shows the
number of hospitalizations for
active duty service members
suffering from mental health
disorders dropped to the lowest level in seven years. The
report published in the April
issue of the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report by the
Defense Health Agency’s
Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch says just more
than 15,000 warfighters in
2015 were hospitalized for
treatment of mental disorders.
The analysis examined several
health care burdens that quantify the impacts of various
illnesses and injuries among
the U.S. Armed Forces and
beneficiaries of the military
health system.
“In recent years, mental
disorders have had the attention of the highest levels of the
U.S. military and significant
resources have been employed
focused on detecting, diagnosing, and treating mental
disorders — especially those
related to long and repeated
deployments and combat
stress,” said Air Force Col.
Dana Dane, the chief of
AFHSB’s epidemiology and
analysis section. “It is also
conceivable that the concerted
efforts to decrease stigmas and
to remove barriers to mental
health care might have prevented the need to hospitalize
service members diagnosed
with these disorders.”
The report says the leading cause of hospitalizations
for mental health conditions
among both female and male
service members were for
adjustment reaction — an abnormal and excessive reaction
to an identifiable life stressor
such as a significant impairment in social, occupational

or academic situation. The
most frequent single diagnosis in males and females was
adjustment reaction at 3,090
and adjustment reaction at
1,032, respectively.
Since 2008, hospitalizations for mental disorders
among service members had
increased by more than 50
percent but have been declining since 2013. The reason
for this downturn could be
attributed to several factors
that include a decline in the
impact of combat and peacekeeping operations since the
withdrawal of U.S. forces
from Iraq and the steady decline in the size of the forces
and combat engagement in
Afghanistan.
In addition, the Department of Defense has developed a myriad of mental health
programs to break the stigma
associated with the diseases
and encourage service members to seek treatment.
In addition, the DoD has
hired more mental health
professionals to provide treatment to service members to
remove barriers and enhance
access to mental health care
that may forestall the need
to hospitalize many service
members because of early
intervention.

Rays of sunshine cut through cloudy

to life in Newman Village, complete with a
spread of traditional Asian and Polynesian
foods, a whole roasted pig, entertainment,
and stories to honor the diverse heritage
of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders.
The evening started by recognizing four
Congressional Medal of Honor recipients
of AAPI heritage, then featured eleven
performances including Polynesian,
Hawaiian, Samoan, and Filipino dances,
a Tang Soo Do, or Korean Martial arts
demonstration, and fire dancers.
More than 400 community members and
their ‘Ohana’, or family, got into the spirit
by donning island wear and a lei around
their neck, or by
pinning a few
flowers
in their

Whitmore credits the event’s success to
Wiesbaden’s Asian-American community
members who were consulted throughout
the planning process.
“It
truly was a grassroots effort to put this together,” said Staff
Sgt. Aisha Bannat, 66th MI Bde., action
officer for the event. From the dozens
of performers to the people who cooked
the food… the cultural experience was
brought to life and enriched by our AAPI
community of volunteers.

were prepared by her culinary students.
“Tonight’s turnout was phenomenal.
This really is a reinvigoration of community participation in our annual observances,” Whitmore said.
Whitmore hopes to keep the momentum
going in the EOA community and with
continued support and command emphasis
he hopes to make these events even better.

See through the eyes of Lorelei
Story and Photos by Gemma McGowan
Contributing writer to MilitaryinGermany.com
Would you like to see through the
eyes of the Lorelei, the legendary mermaid? Head to Bornich to take in the
spectacular view from high above the
Rhein River. You will also have an unforgettable experience driving along
the winding road to where the supposedly siren sat. The picturesque views
include boats on the river, the dotting
of historic towns and several beautiful
castles perched above.
The history of Lorelei
Lorelei was brought to life in a ballad in 1801 by German author Clemens Brentano and then later adapted
by Heinrich Heine’s poem ‘Die Lorelei’. The story describes Lorelei as a
siren sitting on the cliff looking over
the Rhine; combing her golden hair
whiling distracting the shipmen with
her beauty and song; and then causing
the ships to crash on the rocks on this
treacherous bend in the Rhine. Today
you can visit a statue of the mythical
siren that is located at the end of a jetty.
Other famous sirens that Lorelei
makes me think about are the sirens in
Homer’s book “The Odyssey”, which
also caused shipmen to crash into the
rocks. It also reminds me of the modern twist on Homer’s “Odyssey” in the
movie ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’.
High above
This time my journey to discover
Lorelei is not along the banks of the
river, but rather high above looking
down like a siren myself. Though I
have visited the Lorelei statue before
at the jetty and traveled along the scenic road, it was such a treat taken in
the beauty up high! This lookout area
at top of the Lorelei rock also has everything you could possible want, including telescopes and seats, to have
an incredible experience. There is also
a rock carved into a chair, which I
later realized its use and called it the
‘selfie-chair’.
Romantic couples that want to
leave a piece of their love in the area can
bring a lock and attach it to the fence
to symbolize their strong long-lasting
love for each other. The lookout allows
you to get a perfect 180-degree view of
the river and see the sharp bends the
boats must overtake. During the time
of the Lorelei myth, there was much
more of the mountain rock sticking
out into the river. It was later blasted
away to make less of a sharp turn.
I really love watching the boats going up and down the Rhein from this
spectacular height. In the lookout area
there is a restaurant that is open in the
spring and summer. I will surely come
back when the sun is shining and have
lunch outside looking at the Rhine
Valley. In addition, this area is great for
hiking as well as there is an open area
concert venue and you can toboggan
during the summer!
Directly below the lookout point,
but on the other side of the river, is a
restaurant and gift shop that are popular for tour buses. There you can find
nice Lorelei mermaid memorabilia at
the gift shop.
I loved my day visiting up high
where the so-called legendary mermaid of Lorelei sat, and I guess you
can say this siren called me in with her
captivating beauty!
