MISSION STATEMENT
To cultivate, promote, sponsor and develop an understanding
of Indian music, dance, art, theater, and literature amongst the Indian
and American communities by arranging, sponsoring and organizing art
shows, music, film, stage performances, lectures, seminars,
meetings, exhibitions, radio and television programs, creating an
archive of periodicals, books, photographs, film and music records.
IACAW is the foremost cultural organization serving the Indian
community of Westchester for more than a quarter century.
Its mission is to promote a greater understanding of the Indian
culture, art, music, literature, food and the diversity of people of
Indian origin. Since its founding in 1973 by a small group of new
immigrants that settled in Westchester County, the Association
has advanced the knowledge of Indian culture not only within the
County but throughout the tri-state area. Indians as an ethnic
group are amongst the most affluent community in America and
particularly in Westchester County. Members of the Indian
community not only serve the citizens of Westchester County
in various professional and entrepreneurial capacities but also
generate significant employment opportunities in the county.

The Indian American Cultural Association of Westchester (IACAW) welcomes all of you to its most
celebrated event, the 17th annual Heritage of India Festival (HIF). The IACAW executive and HIF committees
welcomes each one of you to come and enjoy the festivities today.
The county of Westchester today is filled with communal diversity, and Indians are proud of being one of
its constituents. Indian Americans living here are fortunate to possess various talents, educational heights, and
cultural riches, which enables us to bring this festival like this that provide citizens of Westchester an opportunity
to understand and digest cultural differences at a much broader level.
The theme for this year is the Peacock, a possessor of some of the most admired human characteristics, and is a symbol of integrity and the beauty we can achieve when we endeavor to show our true colors.
In history, myth, legend and lore, the Peacock symbolism carries portents of: Nobility, Holiness, Guidance,
Protection and Watchfulness. Contemplate the powers of the Peacock when you need more vibrancy and vitality in your experience. The Peacock can rejuvenate self-esteem levels, too! If you’re feeling “blah” and blue,
imagine the glorious, techno-color display the Peacock provides. This puts us in a proper mood to embrace our
own nobility. In no time, you’ll be walking tall and proud as a Peacock, too!
This year once again, our cultural committee is pleased to bring talented performances of music and
dance, that showcase glimpses of rich Indian heritage. We are also delighted to bring you the authentic and
diverse cuisine of India, which your palate can sample.
We are thankful to the volunteers who have spent ample their time planning, organizing, and executing
this event. Without their dedication and selfless service, this festival would not be possible. An event of this scale
would only be an imagination without sponsors, who stepped up unconditionally to offer their financial support.
We would like to thank each and every advertiser and sponsor who helped contribute to make this event happen.
Finally, there would be no celebration without the presence and support from each and every one of you.

HERITAGE OF INDIA FESTIVAL THEME
PEACOCK
The Peacock, Pavo cristatus (Linnaeus), is the national bird of India. It is a symbol of grace, joy, beauty and love.
Peacock is a large and majestic bird. Peacock is a colorful, swan-sized bird with a fan-shaped crest of feathers on
its head, a white patch under the eye and a long-slender neck.
The male of the species is more colorful than the female with a glistening blue breast and neck and a spectacular
bronze-green tail of around 200 elongated feathers. The female is brownish, slightly smaller than the male and
lacks the tail. Peacock occupies a respectable position in Indian culture and is protected not only by religious
sentiments but also by parliamentary statute. It is fully protected under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act,
1972.
The significance of peacock is attached to cultures of India, Far East, Ancient Persia, Greek and Christian. In
Hinduism, the image of the god of thunder, rains and war, Indra, was depicted in the form of a peacock. In south
India, peacock is considered as a 'vahana' or vehicle of lord Muruga. The figure of peacock is painted in various
Islamic religious buildings. In Christianity, the peacock was also known as the symbol of the 'Resurrection'.
In India people believe that whenever the peacock spreads it’s tail in an ornamental fashion, it indicates that rain
is imminent. In a way it is partly true. At the sight of dark clouds the bird spreads its tail and starts dancing in
rhythmic fashion.
Found wild in India (and also domesticated in villages) they live in jungle lands near water. They were once bred
for food but now hunting of peacocks is banned in India. The peahen has no plumage. These birds do not sound
as beautiful as they look, they have a harsh call.
In 1963, the peacock was declared the National Bird of India because of its rich religious and legendary involvement in Indian traditions. A peacock is a living rainbow. A peacock alone has the whole world of colors. The
richness of colors gives it a heavenly beauty. A peacock represents the very essence of Indian philosophy.

Dear Friends:
I am pleased to join with the county’s foremost Indian cultural organization, the Indian
American Cultural Association of Westchester, in welcoming everyone to the 17th Annual
Heritage of India Festival at Kensico Dam Plaza.
One of the most anticipated cultural festivals held in Westchester each summer, this
wonderful event provides our family, friends and neighbors an opportunity to enjoy
traditional Indian music and dance, learn about India’s vibrant culture and rich history,
as well as sample regional varieties of its cuisine.
To the Indian American Cultural Association of Westchester and its remarkable members,
I congratulate you on a successful event. Thank you for your enduring commitment to
sharing your heritage with the community.

the Indian American Cultural Association and the Heritage of India Festival Committee.
This annual festival brings Westchester County together to celebrate India and its heritage
through presentations of Indian culture, arts and crafts, folk dances and music, fashion show, and
sampling of authentic cuisines from various Indian regions. I am honored to be part of this much
anticipated event.
On this special day, I encourage you to fully participate in the activities planned in order to
truly appreciate Indian heritage and culture. It is my hope that you have an enjoyable time spent with
family and friends, and leave with newfound knowledge and appreciation.

Namaste! Once again, it is our honor and pleasure to warmly welcome you all to the 17th annual Heritage
of India Festival presented by the Indian American Cultural Association of Westchester (IACAW) as Cultural Chairs.
In 2016, Cultural Chairs, volunteers, dance school teachers, group leaders, and countless performers have worked very
hard to present variety of mixed dance items to keep everyone continuously entertained for over five hours at this
challenging outdoor venue. Each performer should be honored with highest gratification and applause for their
participation, so make sure to stop and praise them. They truly deserve your cheers and encouragement as a reward for
many months preparation.
We are confident that you will enjoy Indian traditional, classical, semi-classical and folk dance performances at the center
stage along with many crafts in the IACAW activity tent. You will find everyone’s favorite henna tattoos artists along with
other arts and crafts for children. Please be sure to stop by at the IACAW activity tent with your children.
Look for a detailed listing of activities and performances offered at the center stage including cultural dance items in the
following pages with an approximate time of the performance.
Daksha and I would like to thank everyone for their support as it has been a joyful and encouraging experience year after
year to plan the cultural segment of the festival. As always, the teachers, leaders and maestros of stage performers, who
are keys to the success of this segment, were cooperative, enthusiastic and accommodating. Their support made this
task easy for us and for that we are grateful. When the segment or activity performs well and beyond expectations, year
over year, many may conclude the success as an easily attainable result. Well our experiences differ with them as we
believe that every year’s success is a result of dedicated teamwork. Without the proper team the segment would not be
as successful, year over year, as we have been. And for that, we would like to thank everyone who played a role in the
success of this program.
Once again, we are grateful to the Westchester community, the 2016 Executive IACAW committee and the Heritage of
India Festival Committee for counting on us by giving us an opportunity to lead the Cultural Program of the 17th annual
Heritage of India Festival. As we have pledged, we will always be there for the community to lead and deliver.

you next year on the first Sunday of August!

A rising senior at Briarcliff High School
Growing up as a first generation Indian
American in this country, I came to realize that
there was no one in my immediate family who could
empathize with my particular situation. I looked like an
Indian girl, came from an Indian family, but lived in a
primarily Caucasian neighborhood, and spoke English
very differently compared to my parents. As a young
child, I remember feeling quite divided in regards to
my cultural identity, balancing the language of English
which I was learning in school, and the language of
Kannada which my parents spoke at home.

must visit for all the tourists traveling to India. While the Agra fort has been counted as the World
Heritage Site by UNESCO, Qutub Minar is the highest brick tower in the whole wide world.
There are a wide range of Indian monuments to see during your India tour. The Amer Fort,
Chittorgarh Fort, Dilwara Temple, Hawa Mahal, Jahaz Mahal, Jai Mahal Palace, Jantar Mantar,
Lake Palace and Umaid Bhavan Palace are the popular ones. The Amer fort, an example of the
Rajput and Muslim schools of art, was made by three rulers and took around 2 centuries to
complete. The Hawa Mahal in Jaipur is a good example of the Rajputana architecture. The palaces
at Udaipur are brilliant works of art. The Umaid Bhavan Palace is a blend of eastern and western
architectural styles. Tourists who skip a tour around these popular monuments in India would miss
out an integral part of their India tour experience.
If North India boasts so many magnificent pieces of art, South India offers the tourists an
incredible range of artistic splendor. The sculptures displayed at some of the South Indian
monuments like Ajanta & Ellora Caves, Thousand Pillar Temple, Tirupati Temple, Somnath Temple,

In all the animal kingdom, the peacock has the fanciest
clothing. Male peacocks have beautiful long tail feathers,
called a covert or train. Peacocks can spread these tail
feathers into a fan. The fans are covered with sparkling
circles, or eyes, in purple, red or yellow.
The feathers are usually blue or green. Male peacocks use
these feathery displays to get a date. The female peacocks seem to prefer
the males with the largest, brightest fans.

The Panchatantra (Five Principles) is an ancient Indian collection of interrelated animal fables in verse and prose,
arranged within a frame story. The original Sanskrit work, which some scholars believe was composed around
the 3rd century BC, is attributed to Vishnu Sharma. It is based on older oral traditions, including
"animal fables that are as old as we are able to imagine".

PANEER
Paneer is a type of Cheese that is used for many
Indian recipes. It is easy to make and it does not
require the use of Rennet so it’s Vegetarian.
Ingredients:
1 ¾ pint of regular Milk
1 tsp Vinegar or ¼ tsp Citric acid crystal
Boil Milk while stirring continuously, add the Vinegar and stir gently till all the milk curdles. Leave
covered for 15 minutes and strain through a muslin cloth cover the Paneer with cloth and make
the slab of Paneer. Press the Paneer to become
smooth and drain excess water (whey).
HOW TO MAKE GARAM MASALA
Ever wonder what gives Indian food that aromatic flavor? Well,
here’s the secret recipe – GARAM MASALA. Enjoy!
Ingredients;
10 oz. Whole Corriander
1 oz. Cinnamon stick
1 oz. Saffron
1 oz. Nut Meg
1 oz. Cloves
1 oz. Cumin seeds
3 ½ oz. dry Coconut
3 ½ oz. Dry red chili
1 oz. Black Pepper
1 oz. big black Cardamom
1 oz. Mace(Javantri) is outer cover of Nutmeg
1 oz. Black Cumin seeds
1 oz. Poppy Seeds
1 oz. Fennel seeds (Saunf)
4 Bay leaves
1 cup oil.
Heat the oil in big pan, add dry coconut, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, black cumin seeds,
red chili and roast on low heat until seeds are light brown. Remove from heat and add all other
ingredients and mix well. Grind everything in blender until it becomes smooth powder. Store
in air tight container in refrigerator.
Use this Curry powder as a Black Masala in any curry vegetables.

CLASSICAL DANCE
STYLES OF INDIA
Bharatnatyam
Bharatnatyam is one of the most popular classical Indian dances.
Bharatnatyam is more popular in South Indian states of Tamil
Nadu and Karnataka. Bharatnatyam dance is almost 2,000 years
old. It is believed that Bharatnatyam was revealed by Lord
Brahma to Bharata, a famous sage who then codified this sacred
dance in a Sanskrit text called the Natya Shastra. The Natya
Shastra is one of the fundamental treatises on Indian drama and
aesthetics.
Kathak
Kathak is one of the most important classical dances
of India. Kathak is said to be derived from the word
katha, meaning "the art of storytelling." The Kathak
dance form originated in north India and was very
similar to the Bharatnatyam dance form. In ancient
India, there were Kathakars or bards who used to
recite religious and mythological tales to the accompaniment music, mime and dance.
Kathakali
Kathakali is the classical dance form of Kerala. The
word Kathakali literally means "Story-Play". Kathakali
is known for its heavy, elaborate makeup and costumes. In fact, the colorful and fascinating costumes
of Kathakali have become the most recognized icon
of Kerala. Kathakali is considered as one of the most
magnificent theatres of imagination and creativity.
Kathakali dance presents themes derived from the
Ramayana, the Mahabharata and other Hindu epics,
mythologies and legends.

Manipuri
Manipuri is one of the six major classical dances of India.
Manipuri dance is indigenous to Manipur, the North eastern state of India. The Manipuri dance style is inextricably
woven into the life pattern of Manipuri people. The most
striking part of Manipur dance is its colorful decoration,
lightness of dancing foot, delicacy of abhinaya (drama),
lilting music and poetic charm. The Manipuri dance form is
mostly ritualistic and draws heavily from the rich culture of
the state of Manipur.
Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi is one of the classical dance forms of the South India.
Kuchipudi derives its name from the Kuchipudi village of Andhra
Pradesh. In the seventeenth century the Kuchipudi village was presented to the Brahmins, who were experts in staging dance and
drama. Kuchipudi exhibits scenes from the Hindu Epics, legends
and mythological tales through a combination of music, dance
and acting. Like other classical dances, Kuchipudi also comprises
pure dance, mime and histrionics but it is the use of speech that
distinguishes Kuchipudi's presentation as dance drama.
Mohiniattam
Mohiniattam is a classical dance form of Kerala.
Mohiniattam is derived from the words "Mohini"
(meaning beautiful women) and "attam"(meaning
dance). Thus, Mohiniattam dance form is a beautiful feminine style with surging flow of body movements. Mohiniattam dance in Kerala developed in
the tradition of Devadasi system, which later grew
and developed a classical status.
Odissi
Odissi is one of the famous classical Indian dances from
Orissa state. The history of Odissi dance is almost two
thousand years old. Odissi is a highly inspired, passionate, ecstatic and sensuous form of dance. Like most of
the South Indian classical dances of India Odissi too had
its origin in the Devadasi tradition. The state of Orissa
has a great cultural history.
