Here comes the sun
The wheel of the year has turned to the bright side. In Celtic
lands, revelry marked Beltane (May Day), the beginning
of summer, and Midsummer, the height of the sun's
journey. On May Day, revelers would celebrate the
triumph of the Summer King over the Winter
King. The year rolls through ever-brighter days
to the sun’s peak on Midsummer, celebrated
by bonfires and dancing far into the night.

Celtic nobles were famed for hospitality, and woe to those who did not open
their homes. It is said that once, the fabled pirate queen Grace O'Malley
arrived at Howth Castle expecting the traditional welcome—but she was

O'Malley then seized the baron's grandson, demanding as ransom that the
