“At Space Academy, you learn about
what it takes to be an astronaut-to
see if you have the‘right stuff’.”
While on a destinations trip at the
Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama,
we got to explore the U.S. Space and
Rocket Center Museum and Rocket
Park. We rode the Mission to Mars
ride (a full motion simulator), practiced landing the shuttle and saw one
of the last three remaining real Saturn
V rockets - the rocket that “sent our
men to the moon” and a full size scale
model of the Saturn V (it is the largest
scale model in the world!). For people who love space technology and
hardware, it was like Disney World!
We conducted experiments and we
built model rockets. We trained for
and went on several simulated shuttle
missions and learned about the many
different jobs for each mission. Our
goals were to launch the shuttle, do
an EVA (assemble space station
components) and return to Earth
successfully. Both of our missions
were relatively successful.
Molly F. - Troop 42

Huntsville, Alabama
destinations gives girls the opportunity to go somewhere
new, do something different, and meet people from
everywhere they can imagine. Girls can travel around the
corner or around the globe. They can see what life is really
like for an M.D. or camp in the green depths of the Costa
Rican rainforest, go hostelling at the Marabel Farm in Ohio,
or visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center (like Molly) in
Alabama.

"...The two of us stayed up

everything and anything."
-- Written by a participating Mom
“A Very Special Girl Scout Sleep-Over”
On August 19, 2006, the Maryland
Correctional Institution for
Women (MCIW) held its first-ever
sleepover for the Girl Scouts
Beyond Bars troop that meets
there every other Saturday of the
month. The troop leaders and
volunteers led the girls and moms
through a variety of fun activities.
The final part of the night was
devoted to quiet time and DVD’s-sleep optional.
As a mother who has been an
inmate for over eight years, the
opportunity to spend nearly 14
hours of quality time with my
daughter was nothing short of a
miracle. We had the best conversations and connections that
we’ve had since our
separation.
I know that there is nothing more
important to any mother than a
strong bond with her daughter. I
believe that every mother involved
left our event with that gift.
My daughter Anna, 16, says her
favorite part of the sleepover was
getting to be with me where I am.
The two of us stayed up all night
talking about everything and anything. We were tired in the
morning but very, very satisfied.

“Girl Scouts Shadow Business Women
& See the Light”
The Distinguished Women’s Award Reception showcases the experiences of five senior
Girl Scouts with one of five honorees whom they shadowed at their place of work.
This experience allows girls to discover, up-close and personal, what it takes to run a
business, lead a department, and make decisions that impact the lives of others.
Here are comments from some 2006 Girl Scout shadows about their mentors:
“Judge Heller’s drug program for
convicted felons is a true testament
to the difference she makes every
day.” Betsy Kadow about Hon. Ellen
M. Heller, Judge, Circuit Court
for Baltimore.
“Mrs. Hrabowksi said ‘Watch your
thoughts for they become your
words. Watch your words for they
become your actions…your actions
become your habits…your habits
become your character…your
character becomes your DESTINY.”
Airis Thomas about Jacqueline
Hrabowski, Vice President,
Community Relations,
T. Rowe Price

Women Honorees:
The Honorable Ellen M. Heller,
Jacqueline C. Hrabowski,
Mary Pat Seurkamp, Ph.D.,
E. Follin Smith and
Yolanda Maria Welch.
“Making Dreams Reality”
Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, with the help
of a father who wanted to create a living
memorial for his daughter, transformed an old
10’x 45’ trailer into the Caitlin Dunbar Nature
Center. The Center is a testament to what a
committed group effort can produce. Stocked with
live animals—toads, frogs and fishes—and a Nature
Center Coordinator, the Caitlin Dunbar Nature Center
offers an environment where girls and campers can look,
learn and explore.
“Outdoor Adventures”
GSCM camps continue to be a great way for girls to ascend to new heights, cultivate their leadership
and outdoor skills, make new friends and develop self-confidence and independence.
Cardboard Boat Regatta—
Rock Climbing Wall—
Junior Encampment—
150 girls and their families
participated in this first-time
event where the challenge was
to build a boat made of
cardboard and see whose boat
stayed afloat the longest or
sank the quickest. Twenty-six
boats entered the competition
and four teams emerged as
winners.
The Council purchased its first
25-foot portable rock climbing
wall in 2006. Training sessions
introduced girls to climbing,
rappelling, and route-finding
techniques. The wall was a
big hit at various camp and
summer events, including
the Big Event.
Last May, 653 Junior Girl
Scouts participated in the first
Junior Encampment at Camp
Conowingo. Girls honed their
camping skills and worked on
five different badges during an
all-nighter under the stars
and moon.

During the summer of 2006,
dozens of Girl Scouts, troop
leaders, and parents took part
in a project, funded by the
Chesapeake Bay Trust, to
create a new living shoreline
along Cockey Creek,
a tributary of the Magothy
River. The Chesapeake Bay
Trust's Living Shorelines Grants
Program was designed to
create and promote natural
shoreline restoration projects
around the Chesapeake Bay.
Girl Scouts of Central
Maryland was awarded
$10,000 for shoreline
restoration of Cockey Creek,
located on the grounds of
Camp Whippoorwill.

The Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be
honest and fair
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.
