West of the AT&T Conference Center is the Blanton Art Museum, and right across the street is The Story of Texas State History Museum. The Texas State Capitol is just a few blocks south on Congress Ave. Graciously provided by AMD, the Connection Center is located in the lobby on Meeting Level Two (M2) and provides computers for you to access e-mail and web. The Connection Center also has a Help Desk where you can go to ask SXSWedu staff any questions you might have about the conference. The TEA Help Desk, located in the lobby on Meeting Level Two (M2) near the Connection Center, is where you can go to ask Texas Education Agency staff any questions you might have about Project Share. What is the Green Room? The Green Room, located in Salon E of the grand ballroom on Meeting Level Three (M3), is a special place that we reserve for speakers to prepare their presentations and relax before their session. Only speakers are allowed access. Will the contents of the conference be available after the event concludes? Yes. SXSWedu is working with the Project Share team to make an archive of the breakout and Spotlight Sessions available to Project Share account holders after the event. We are also investigating the possibility of placing the content in Texas Education iTunesU. Maps are available at the front desk highlighting noteworthy buildings, such as the Main (UT) Tower, and other unique landmarks of interest. Restaurants: The Carillon, in the AT&T Hotel, is one of the city’s finest restaurants. Other eateries in the hotel include the more casual Gabriel’s Café, and the One Twenty Five Café, offering coffee and light fare. Also nearby is the Blanton Grill (9am–5pm), The Story of Texas Café (10am–3pm), El Mercado Restaurant (9:30am–10pm), and Scholz Bier Garten, “the oldest restaurant in Texas” (11am–10pm). WEDNESDAY • MARCH 9 Spotlight Session Connected Students, Connected Teachers Please join Commissioner of Education Robert Scott for remarks regarding today’s connected, tech-savvy students and the imperative for a similarly engaged community of Texas educators. In order to teach our students, we first have to reach them: understanding and applying the approaches and tools our students use daily, is central to creating a rich learning environment that both stimulates and engages. Speaker Spotlight Veteran education policy expert Robert Scott was appointed Commissioner of Education by Governor Rick Perry on Oct. 16, 2007. In this role, Mr. Scott serves as the head of the Texas Education Agency, which oversees the state’s 1,200 school districts and charter schools. Mr. Scott has long been considered one of the most thoughtful and innovative education policy experts in state government. A graduate of the University of Texas School of Law and a member of the State Bar of Texas, Mr. Scott provides strategic leadership to the Texas Education Agency. Mr. Scott is the proud father of two teenagers, Katie and Jonathon, who attend school in the Austin Independent School District. Previously he spent nearly 18 years at Texas Monthly, stepping down in August 2009 as the magazine’s president and Editor in Chief. He currently hosts a new show, “Overheard with Evan Smith”, that airs on PBS stations nationally. A New York native, Smith has a bachelor’s degree in public policy from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, and a master’s degree in journalism from the Medill School at Northwestern University. They will learn ways to build communities of learners to create learner-centric activities and to facilitate collaboration in Project Share. Dynamic Digital Portfolios: How to Create a Compelling Showcase Organizer: Carol Teitelman, Education Service Center Region 13 Time: 8:30am | THUR | Rm 105 Digital portfolios can be dynamic representations of a person’s work, talents, and personality. Building a reflective representation takes planning and knowing your audience. Project Share’s ability to target parts of the portfolio to specific people or groups allows an individual to build a comprehensive portfolio that can then be shared strategically. Participants will leave this session with an overview of types and samples of dynamic portfolios for both teachers and students. College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics Organizer: Jane Silvey, Education Service Center Region 7 Time: 9:45am | THUR | Rm 107 In this session, we will discuss the development of an online professional development course for teachers using the Epsilen platform as part of Project Share. At the University of Texas we investigated relationships between collaboration and problem-solving in the context of a computer networking simulation and simulation-based game. Findings identified limitations of common assumptions about the effectiveness of working in groups while using interactive technologies. At Harvard we developed and tested a 75-minute computer game that is a performance assessment of middle school students’ scientific inquiry skills. Led by pioneer Dr. Chris Dede, we found that games can be designed to assess higher-order thinking and procedural knowledge.
