Gunsmoke ORPA’s The Official Newsletter of the Ohio Rifle & Pistol Association www.orpa.net February – March 2016 ORPA Vintage trophy Donation By G. Martin Capito, Sr Thanks to member Neal W. Burdette for finding, procuring, and donating the 1946 Tewes Trophy back to ORPA. Mr. Burdette's letter and a photo of the trophy are reproduced here. The trophy is solid hardwood with two brass plaques and a one-quarter inch thick brass casting. The smaller plaque says "1946" and is attached to the casting. The larger plaque is attached directly to the hardwood and states: STATE CHAMPION GALLERY PRONE METALLIC SIGHTS 300X300+84 TENS STATE RECORD We would like to thank Mr. Burdette for his generosity. Nothing else is known about the trophy as the name of the winner is not on it and other contemporary records have been missing for years. The origin of this Tewes Trophy is also lost to history. If anyone else has any further information it would be appreciated if it were shared with the membership. Mr. Burdette’s Letter: “In late September 2015 I was in Barnes Guns, Lancaster, Ohio and saw that Charlie Carnes had this trophy on the wall by his office. I asked how much he wanted for it and he asked what I wanted it for. I said I wanted to send the 69 year old trophy home to ORPA. Charlie took it off the wall and handed it to me Unfortunately Charlie passed away on the first of October and Barnes Guns is no more. I hope this can be displayed at ORPA Headquarters. It is quite a score for its time, but doesn’t list the shooters name. Enjoy! Neal W. Burdette Member # 1694 90 years and too stiff for position shooting.” Again thank you Mr. Burdette for passing this trophy on to ORPA. Congratulations to Don Fine, Loveland, OH (MRPC) in rifle Kimberly Hobart, New Philadelphia, OH in Pistol earned their Distinguished Badge from the CMP. President’s Column 11 December 2015 By G. Martin Capito, Sr. It's hard to believe but it looks like I get to do another tour of duty as your President. The Trustees elected me to serve until next Annual Meeting and I agreed to step up and do it. With the capable leaders, Trustees and Directors we have in place the Association seems to continue to be in good hands. There were several changes brought about at the Annual Meeting. Our immediate past President Bob Sacco agreed to step into a Vice President's position to join our returning VP's Gwen Bailey and Larry D. Smith. The Secretary's position is now again held by Keith Bailey, who returns to a position he had held for several years prior. Jim Scofield stepped down as our Legislative Director but remains our very capable Treasurer and Alan Joseph is solidly in place as our Membership Secretary. I would like to acknowledge and thank our outgoing President Bob Sacco and Secretary Mary Sacco, as well as Gunsmoke Editor Rachel Scofield. They were a very capable part of our team and the Association was served well in their service. Rachel took the quality of Gunsmoke to levels we've never seen before and we owe her a large debt of gratitude for the outstanding results of her efforts. New Editor Mary Sacco has big shoes to fill, but she and Rachel have been working together for the last several months to make it a smooth transition. Mary has also agreed to take over as Clubs Director and as Nominating Chair. Yvonne Smith will be helping as Assistant Nominating Chairman. Bob Sacco has agreed to take over as Legislative Director. The Trustees and Officers would like to welcome new Trustee Jennifer Syme into the fold. It's always good to see new names and faces step up to serve at the State level in any organization. To that extent we always encourage new people to make the jump and serve at the State level. An individual's success at the local and regional level has certain advantages that can help the Association. The 2016 Trustee meeting dates have been set as January 10, April 10, September 11 and November 12. The locations will be announced later as we are currently in talks with a couple clubs to obtain venues and discussions have not been completed in time for this issue of Gunsmoke. Check our website www.orpa.net for the information as it becomes available. The membership is welcomed and encouraged to attend any meetings they can. The Trustees are ready and willing to take on our programs into 2016 and just waiting for the weather to break to get back on the ranges. In the meantime take advantage of the breaks and hit the reloading room to stock up for next year's needs. Finally, I'd like to thank member Neal W. Burdette for his surprise donation to ORPA at this past November's Annual Meeting. Mr. Burdette located and delivered a vintage ORPA Prone Rifle trophy from 1946. See the story inside for a photo and letter. Until next time we'll see you on the range and may all your shots ring true. Stay safe. G. Martin Capito Sr. President How to Contact Us G. In Memoriam Michael Dane Shanks, age 69, passed away December 19, 2015 in Hamilton, Ohio. He enjoyed shooting and spending time with his friends at Butler County Sportsmen Rifle and Pistol Club. Mike joined the Black Hawks in 2001 and will be missed by our club as well as on the firing line. He was also a long time member of the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association. Our sympathies to his family. Electronic version of Gunsmoke available. The electronic version of Gunsmoke arrives as an email with links to a pdf newsletter. It features live links to important information on ORPA’s website, our member clubs and our advertisers. Hundreds of ORPA members have already made the switch and as a result ORPA has saved thousands of dollars in printing and postage costs. If you would like to make the switch to the electronic Gunsmoke, please email Editor Mary Sacco at [email protected] or Alan Joseph at [email protected]. Thank you. Junior ORPA Pistol Team at the JORQ By Jennifer Syme Have you ever awakened early, and really wanted a cup of coffee and a donut...only to realize you can't have one? Welcome to the life of a teenage shooter. At least, I thought to myself as I looked around at the other somewhat sleepy faces on an early December Saturday morning, I'm not alone. Even with the lack of coffee and donuts, members of the ORPA Junior Pistol team under the direction of Coach Fred Totts shot very well at the recent Junior Olympic Regional Qualifier. The Qualifier, held on December 5th at the University of Akron, was hosted by ORPA. Shooters at the JORQ shoot individually for score in two events, Sport and Air Pistol. In Sport Pistol, Brett Tucker scored a 538/600, earning a bronze medal. He was followed by Robert Delagrange, who shot a 507, finishing 4th. Cody Poole shot a 504, in 5th place. Mason finished with a 408, in 7th place. For the girls, Jessica Syme won the Sport Pistol event with a score of 518/600. Zoe Gibson was a close second with a score of 517. Grace Praisler, new to the ORPA team, finished 3rd with a 354. The ORPA Juniors also shot well in Air Pistol, with the men shooting a 60 shot match and the ladies a 40 shot. Brett Tucker finished in 2nd place with a 537/600. Cody Poole shot a 511, finishing in 4th place. Robert Delagrange finished 5th with a 489. Mason Poole scored a 355, in 7th place. Zoe Gibson won the ladies Air Pistol with a score of 343/400. Jessica Syme finished 2nd place, with a score of 336, and Grace Praisler took the bronze with a 284. Jessica's first place finish in Sport and Zoe's first place in Air earned both girls an automatic qualification to the Junior Olympics in their respective events. All of the team members are watching for their invitation to attend the Junior Olympics at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO this spring. The team will be shooting at the Camp Perry Open Air Pistol Match in January. Stay tuned to your ORPA Gunsmoke for future updates!
