Special Highlights of the 2015 National Matches
ORPA’s Gunsmoke The Official Newsletter of the Ohio Rifle & Pistol Association www.orpa.net April/May 2016 Special Highlights of the 2015 National Matches By: Edward Shank - ORPA Long Range Team Coordinator Once in a while we have a person from Ohio go to the National Championships at Camp Perry and do an exceptionally outstanding job of shooting. This year Ohio had two shooters who excelled. In the National Long Range Championship, with 321 total competitors, firing at distances of 800 yards and greater over a four day period for a possible aggregate score of 1250 points, our first of two Ohio shooters was Mr. Dan Altman who placed 15th in the High Master Class and 18th overall with a score of 1231-53X in the National Long Range Championship. Dan’s score was 11 points behind Nancy Tompkins, who won the National Long Range Championship with a 1242-58X. Dan Altman’s name was listed with those who have won the National Long Range Championship numerous times. Some of these notable names are those you know, such as David Tubb, Nancy Tompkins, Michelle Gallagher, and John Whidden. Our 2nd shooter from Ohio is Mr. Charles Rowe also had an outstanding year at Camp Perry. In the Mid-range Championship, he placed 3rd in the any rifle division and 4th overall. He also was shooting against those names such as Tubb, Gallagher and Whidden. In the National Long Range Championship, Chuck won 19th place in the Master Class with a score of 1217-45X. In the Remington Band of Brothers match, which is a 1000 yard match, with a total possible score of 200-20X, the final match results showed that the top 12 shooters had all cleaned their target with only X counts separating them. Chuck won 5th place in the Band of Brothers match with a score of 200-12X. He fired this score against a list of hard holders such as David Tubb, Sherri Gallagher, and David Shellhammer. Sixth place for those interested, went to a British long range and International Palma Team shooter who was the 2012 NRA National Long Range Champion, David Luckman. David Luckman was one of the many international shooters who were there mainly to shoot the World Full Bore and the International Palma Matches. Charles Rowe & Ed Shank If Charles Rowe’s shooting at Camp Perry was not enough to top off a great year, Charles Rowe went on record as the first shooter to win in the same year both the Bob Wright Long Range Championship which was held at the Alliance Rifle Club in Malvern, Ohio and the Ohio State MidRange Championships, which was held at the Miami Rifle and Pistol Club, outside the Cincinnati, Ohio area. In both matches Charles Rowe cleaned the target without dropping a point. 1 President’s Column G. Martin Capito, Sr. Looks like the bulk of the bad winter weather missed most of Ohio but all that did was make us miss the outdoor shooting seasons even more. Not cold enough to stay miserable and not warm enough to shoot outside for a long period. At least we got caught up with our reloading, right?? Your ORPA website (www.orpa.net) has a phone number to contact the Officers and Directors directly. If you use that service please remember to leave a message with your name, phone number and the best time(s) to return your calls. Most of your Directors and Trustees still hold down jobs as well as running their respective discipline or office. It would benefit everyone if this was done. The Trustees are always looking for additional help with running the matches and programs of the Association. If you would like to get involved please let us know. We try to solicit as much valuable help as we can but sometimes we can't tell if you're interested unless you speak up. Good people are always welcome at the State level and if you're not sure what you can do, we are all willing to show you and explain it. One issue always on our minds is to figure out new methods of fundraising for our programs, especially for our Juniors. There are only so many raffles you can do. We have our main raffle held at our Annual Meeting in November and each discipline holds one or more throughout the year. The trustees are discussing other methods of fundraising and we'll announce them as we set them in motion. In the meantime I'd welcome suggestions from the membership pertaining to any successes you have had with your fundraising efforts. One reminder is that the National Rifle Association's Annual Meeting will be held this May in our neighboring State of Kentucky. If you've never had an opportunity to go to one this will be your chance. The vendors, displays, seminars, clinics and classes will keep you entertained and talking about it for months. Hope to see you there! Until next time, take a new shooter out to the range and introduce her or him to the enjoyment we all share. Stay safe. G. May 7 & 8 ORPA Service Rifle Championship; Team Championship and John Garand Match May 28, 29 & 30 ORPA Highpower Regional; Team Match; John Garand Match and CMP “LEG” Match June 18 & 19 Bob Wright Memorial Long Range (Camp Perry is NOT confirmed- We reserved Alliance have Range at Malvern-- This will be a TWO DAY MATCH) June 25 & 26 ORPA State Highpower Championship; CMP “LEG” Match We are continuing to pray for better weather than last year. No one can remember a year when ORPA did not complete a single match in prior years. Please note the change in the NRA Rule 3 in your rule books. The service rifle definitions have CHANGED. RE: 2016 Service Rifle Rule change Dear Match Sponsor, As many of you may have noticed, there was a typo in the previous version of rules sent that would have impacted the configurations of service rifles, more specifically with barrel length. Service Rifles with 20” barrels are able to have a flash suppressor attached. The correct verbiage is as follows: “3.1 (c) Service Rifle - U.S. Service Rifle 5.56mm M16 series Must be chambered for the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO (.223) cartridge. The receiver must be separately machined from the handguard; the two parts must be separable. The barrel may be no longer than 20 inches; flash suppressors are not required, but if the barrel has a flash suppressor, it shall not be included in the barrel length measurement. Upper receivers and barrels may not be changed during the firing of any event. The gas operating system must be fully operable and adhere to the original M16 rifle design (i.e. Stoner design, gas impingement system) or have a piston-operated gas system. Metal or synthetic (polymer) magazines, standard issue or commercial equivalent, with standard service 20 or 30-round box magazine dimensions must be attached during the firing of all courses and in all positions. A 10-round magazine with the same external dimensions as a standard service 20round box magazine may be used. A dummy magazine with a ramp for single shot loading may be used if this magazine has the same external dimensions as the standard service 20-round box magazine. Magazines may not contain added weights. 3 The rifle may have an optical sight (reflective sights are considered optical sights) with a maximum power of 4.5X installed on the receiver. Variable scopes with a maximum of 4.5X are permitted. Only commercially manufactured scopes that were produced with a maximum magnification of 4.5X and that have a maximum objective lens of 34 mm may be used. If an optical sight is used, the same optical sight must be used in all stages of a course of fire (changing sights is not permitted). The centerline of an optical sight shall be no higher than 3.5 inches above the centerline of the bore. Alternatively, the rifle may be equipped with issue-type metallic front and rear sights. Metallic sights, if used, must have an M16 type sight design with the rear sight in the carry handle and the front sight in the standard M16 location. Butt-stocks may vary in length and be either fixed or collapsible. Collapsible or adjustable length stocks may be adjusted during an event, but butt stocks that allow for other adjustments such as the cheekpiece height or butt-plate location may not be used. Only standard A1 or A2 type pistol grips may be used. Quad rails or similar hand guards may be used.” Gunsmoke Deadline for June-July 2016 edition is Advertise in Gunsmoke: Prices begin at $25.00 per issue for a business card size space or $125.00 per year. The Alliance Rifle Club is located near the city of Malvern, Ohio. Beginning in March, and every other weekend into November, long range 1000 yard and Palma matches will be conducted by the Ohio-Penn Rifle league. Since the competitors shoot at the same firing line for both the 600 and 1000 yard matches, both matches are shot concurrently. So you can pick which yardage you want to compete at. The opposite weekends when long and mid-range matches are not held, Ohio-Penn conducts High-Power Across the course matches with NRA match distances of 200,300 & 600 yards. These matches also are held every other weekend into November. The Alliance Rifle Club has again agreed to hold the ORPA Bob Wright Long Range Championship due to cuts at Camp Perry. Match Dates are June 18 and 19th. Please refer to the ORPA match schedule for details when it is published. Those interested in shooting on a team that are ORPA members, residents of the State of Ohio and over the age of 18 years old may apply and send me an email per the link provided below. I in turn will forward an application with a cover letter providing a little more information such as the cost, team meeting time at Camp Perry, etc. Selection for teams will be based on past performance and long range classification. The teams will comprise of four shooters for the Herrick, Roumanian and the Palma Team Trophy Matches. 6 If someone just wants to coach/read the wind, per the NRA, they need not be competing in the individual matches; however they must be registered with the NRA, so as to have a competitor number and “stickers” to paste on the scoring cards for any of the three matches. Since the teams are entered as State Association teams, coaches must meet the same criteria as the shooting members, i.e., State of Ohio residency, ORPA membership and age. In order to participate the firing competitor must be a paid up member of ORPA and entered in the National Matches as well as being able to shoot both days of the 1,000-yard matches, the Roumanian and Herrick Matches. Due to the scheduling in firing the Palma Team Match the day after the Palma Individual Match, the Palma Team Match has been made an optional additional event. Team members will be asked to pay 50% of the entry fee per match. In 2015 the match fee cost per shooter was $20.00 per individual team member firing only the Roumanian & Herrick matches or $27.50 if firing all three matches. At this point in time, there has not been any published data for match fees or if the match fees have increased. Course of fire for team matches: The Roumanian Trophy Team course of fire will be: two sighter shots and 20 shots for record per shooter fired at 1,000 yards.
