04351 Fourth DRAFT DAMAR RTC
Journey Toward Excellence REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY JANUARY 1 – DECEMBER 31, 2004 D amar's mission is to provide residential, educational and support services for children and adults with developmental disabilities that promote their fullest individual potential...and prepare them to live with as much independence as possible in their chosen communities. WISE FISCAL STEWARDSHIP As news headlines proclaimed through the Central Indiana area in 2004, several government agencies cut vital funding to worthy organizations. In addition, many major healthcare operations closed outpatient and other facilities, many of which were resources for the children and adults that Damar serves. Damar leadership followed these events closely throughout the year. Despite these challenges, Damar, with forward-looking vision and action, was able to remain financially sound and even expand some service lines. At the end of the year, Damar's fiscal health remained strong with excellent prospects for the future. This enviable position is due in large measure to innovative management practices, long and hard hours by our highly competent board of directors and the continuing generosity of our donors and volunteers. Damar recognizes that additional cutbacks in traditional government funding are highly possible – if not likely – in the coming years. As a proactive response to the potential changes, Damar has prudently begun both a planned fiscal reserve and a renewed focus on financial development to help ensure continued success. Fullest possible potential These three words appear nearly everywhere at Damar. They hang on our walls. They are printed in our publications. And they reflect what we achieve. For nearly 40 years, Damar Services has brought joy where there were tears, serenity where there was anguish, calm where there was chaos. "Fullest possible potential" means many different things to many different people. At Damar, it's what we promise to those we serve. That phrase may mean the simple joy and satisfaction of ordering and paying for a meal without aid. It may mean sleeping peacefully through a night – absent the chilling terror of unending nightmares. Or it may mean walking through a classroom door at a local public school, knowing that one can live comfortably among others as a peer. At Damar, good enough is never enough. To reach the "fullest possible potential," every day has to be a little bit better – a true journey toward excellence. We invite you to consider the scope and breadth of Damar within this modest publication. To our returning friends, thank you for an extraordinary year. To those of you who may be learning about us for the first time, welcome! Gregory A. Johnson President, CEO Jeffrey A. Bates Chairman of the Board 3 Nearly overcome with anger, a young boy stomps over to the attitude board. He moves his name tag from "happy" to The Journey Begins... "mad." Instead of flying into an uncontrolled frenzy, he breathes deeply, trying to work through his frustration. Who We Serve In nearly four decades, Damar Services has served thousands of children and adults primarily in the Greater Indianapolis area. As Damar has expanded its services over the years, children, adults Slowly, his face softens. He looks at his friend. "I'm sorry." The friend runs to embrace him. and families throughout the state of Indiana and in portions of the United States have come to Damar for its program excellence. Damar's highly trained staff include psychologists, licensed mental health professionals and mental retardation specialists who successfully provide direct support for youth and adults at risk of unnecessary institutionalization. Damar serves children and adults with special needs – those who may not find professional support anywhere else. Damar provides a full continuum of care options, to those with developmental disabilities including challenging behaviors, autism, and victims of abuse and neglect. As many as 400 children and adults may be receiving direct services from Damar at any given time. Between 80 and 90 children may reside on the main Damar campus, with others served at Damar – sponsored facilities or within their own homes in the community. Hundreds of other children, adults and families are also served through professional outpatient support services. The Journey Advances... From humble beginnings, Damar Services has grown to serve thousands of children, adults and families – many of whom may never have possessed a chance for a life at their “fullest possible potential.” This year, Damar Services faced the broad community challenge of more traditional institutions abandoning services that directly aid those we are privileged to serve. Despite these challenges, Damar persevered and grew. In part, here's why: Damar Best "A dream becoming reality" is how Damar COO Dr. Jim Dalton describes Damar Best. Throughout 2004, the goal of Damar Best remained: improving the lives of all individuals served and expanding on the model of best Q practices in use at Damar and across the country. In keeping with a focus to share best practices and experiences, Damar How do parents, guardians was host to a November statewide conference attended by more than 200 and caseworkers rank the professionals. The conference, produced in collaboration with the Indiana quality of care at Damar? Association of Residential and Child Caring Agencies (IARCCA), focused on strategies to reduce seclusion and restraints in hospitals and other treatment facilities. Quality Plus Completing its second year, this self-funded initiative continued to A evaluate, monitor and improve all processes and work completed at Damar Services. Focusing on continuous improvement in client-related services and administration, Damar's Quality Plus commitment aids in exceeding regulatory quality standards and providing clients, residents and families with superb service and assistance. 4.9 on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest level of satisfaction. At Damar, this initiative means every dollar received must be put to maximum effective use and every outcome must reach the highest achievable level. Simply put, Damar's Quality Plus ensured that each resident, client and family received the best possible care. (Damar Satisfaction Survey, October 2004) 5 Historically, about 85 percent of the children and adults served by Damar transition positively to community life and greater independence. More than 90 percent of those supported by Damar in community settings successfully adjust and establish productive lifestyles. Continuing the Journey... With several major healthcare facilities closing their outpatient facilities, Damar Services effectively stood in the breach in 2004, serving hundreds of individuals and families. Damar's 40-acre campus in southwest Indianapolis serves many purposes: a 24-hour residential treatment facility for up to 90 children, a support center for Damar's off-campus programs and activities throughout the Greater Indianapolis area and an administrative operation that provides professional services and support both for Damar programs and for other social and civic organizations in the State of Indiana. Sustaining its remarkable record of success, Damar saw the trend continue in 2004 where more than 80 percent of individuals served ultimately moved into more independent community-based settings. While Damar's physical campus is best known to the general public, Damar's CLASS (Community Living and Support Services) program positively touches hundreds of lives throughout the Central Indiana community. Trained CLASS professionals serve children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families in their own homes. Once residents have achieved a reasonable measure of independence and progress, several programs are in place to help residents and clients successfully transition to the community. This added measure helps ensure that Damar’s mission is fully realized: to help residents and clients reach their “fullest possible potential.” 6 Achieving Excellence on the Journey... Professional services provided by Damar in 2004 included: Campus Treatment Services * Intensive/Secure Services * Open Campus Services * Severe Autism Services * Early Intervention Services * Transitional Living Services “Success is not a place at which CLASS (Community Living and Support Services) one arrives but rather the spirit * Residential Services with which one undertakes and * Community-Based Support Services continues the journey.” * Supported Living Services Educational Services * Damar Academy * Educational Day Services * Summer Opportunities for Learning Therapeutic Services * Behavior Management * Mental Health Counseling * Recreational Therapy * Occupational Therapy * Expressive Therapy * Damar Art Therapy For more information about these services, please visit our website at www.damar.org The Damar Academy reflected “fullest possible potential” in 2004 with 23% of its students successfully transitioning from the campus facility back into public schools. — Alex Noble, Author The Journey Accelerates... To help bring joy and a feeling of family, Damar (through a separate charitable fund) provides many gifts and holiday activities for children residing on campus. Support from the community The Indianapolis community turned out in force for the 2004 AmeriPlex Race for Success. Hundreds of runners and walkers participated in a five-mile run, a 5K walk and a family-fun walk. The event included more than 80 Damar residents who earned finisher's medals. 8 Sustaining the Journey... Human Resources Pursuing its journey toward excellence, Damar Services fully implemented the "Fish" philosophy this year. The "Fish" philosophy embodies four points: 1) Play (enjoy your job) 2) Make their day (do something extra for someone else) 3) Be there (live in the present) 4) choose your attitude. "Having the right people in the right jobs with the right experience," contributes directly to Damar's success," explains HR director Liz Snyder. Matching qualified professionals with rapidly growing needs, Damar's staff grew by a little over 11 percent in 2004 with plans to expand even more in 2005. DAMAR DONORS Damar seeks every possible avenue from government and foundation support to fund its programs. While this income presently provides the majority of funds that are needed, it cannot cover all expenses and operating costs. Opportunities for greater service to children and adults are generously provided by our growing community of donors and supporters. We at Damar give a special note of thanks to those who financially support our mission, acknowledging that many of the day-to-day needs and the important "extras" that help our clients achieve their fullest possible potential would likely go unmet if it were not for your generosity. On behalf of those we serve, the Damar staff and board extend our deep appreciation and gratitude. The Home Team “Damar is an amazing facility that does excellent things for the youth it serves.
