Colonial Rule #3:
“Stand Out From the Crowd”
Gaining share has never been easy.
For many, it’s tougher now than ever.
More resources are spent designing
and marketing mattresses than at any
time in history.
Every introduction has to be more
compelling, more exciting and a
better value than the last. It also has to
be easier to buy and much easier to sell!
And no one, it seems, ever gets to
launch alone!
How many times have your new beds
arrived on the sales floor at exactly the
same time as your competitors?
So, what can you do to get noticed?
What does it take to “stand out from
the crowd?”
At Colonial, we have the experience
and expertise to answer those questions.
From custom top-of-bed solutions, to
cost-effective, lighted headboards, we
have the answers to your branding and
display problems.
Our clients are committed to growing
their share. We are committed to help!
Colonial Rule #3 is one rule that was
made NOT to be broken.

The 14-inch memory foam mattress from Sleep Innovations provides the
ultimate in therapeutic support. Its extra-thick three-layer design includes a
supportive foam base, air channel foam support and an open cell memory
foam comfort layer to offer a customized sleep experience. The top two
layers are constructed to improve airflow and counteract any heat retention
problems that sometimes plague traditional memory foams.

BLU SLEEP PRODUCTS EXPANDS ITS
SLEEP PRODUCTS AND SERVICE
By Gretchen Kast and Christopher Schriever
With a long history of technological innovation in the foam specialty bedding
industry, Blu Sleep has evolved to emerge as a groundbreaking designer and
marketer of breathable memory foam, latex and foamed gel pillows, toppers
and, now, mattresses. The Canadian company differentiates itself with its unique
material blends, creative use of color, texture and feels.
O
ver the years Blu Sleep has created a signature collection
that uses both natural and synthetic materials, to create
line-up that has attracted the attention of consumers and
retailers alike.
Focusing on developing “true products” that offer the latest in
comfort, support and health, Blu Sleep has perfected a scientifically unique formulation to manufacture truly innovative bedding
accessories. The company uses a high-density, open-cell foam
structure to provide unsurpassed ventilation and support, with
an elasticity that really set their pillow and topper products apart.
“Our pillows adapt to you,” company co-president Alex Ciccolella
explains. “You don’t have to adapt to the pillow.”
Blu Sleep will add eight new pillows to its already diverse pillow
collection at the Winter Las Vegas Market. Four of the new pillows
are wool-based and four are fiber based. Blu Sleep chose to make
a wool line because wool offers a natural breathable, fiber product
that resists dust mites, helps to wick moisture and regulate body
temperature. The wool line-up includes four distinct pillows—all
with wool—but each with a different feel. The first wool-based pillow is made solely with wool, while the second adds latex to the
mix. The third features both wool and the company’s “nature series” memory foam. The final pillow in the wool collection combines wool and foamed gel.
The remaining four of the eight new pillows are fiber-based. The
first of the line is an all-fiber pillow. The second includes fiber with
latex, while the third is made with fiber with the “nature series”
memory foam. And, the final fiber-based pillow combines fiber and
foamed gel. This collection of four fiber pillows has an incredibly
soft feel, and when combined with latex, foamed gel and memory
foam, also offers outstanding comfort and support.
With steady growth and little to no returns with the company’s
pillow and topper product sales, Blu Sleep is embarking on strategic expansion in the US and Canada. The expansion plan includes
increased marketing and sales efforts along with the introduction
of the company’s first mattress collection. Steady increases in
distribution are expected to continue as Blu Sleep unveils its expanded program.

10 BEDROOM / Winter 2014
As part of its program expansion, Blu
Sleep will introduce Somni Specialty Sleep,
the company’s first mattress line. “We used
the same unique, distinctive, designs, components and materials to create our new
mattress and pillow collection that have
been our hallmark for our successful foam,
latex and foamed gel pillows and toppers,”
Alex explains. “The same care, design, performance and color details we have put into
our existing lines will also be used in our
new product collections.”
The new Somni Specialty Sleep collection features six mattresses named the
Romantic, Nubia, Astoria, Bria, Alexia and
Eliza. Each of these mattresses is specifically designed and engineered using the
properties of the luxurious European-based
foams Blu Sleep uses in its diverse pillow
and topper lines. Over a year in the making, these beds were carefully fabricated to
provide optimum support, with conforming
comfort for all sleepers.
Raw materials were careful sourced after extensive testing proved they met the
company’s stringent quality standards.
Alex explains, “We paid attention to every detail.” Not only was great care taken
in specifying the foam cores and quilting
materials, the covers and borders were
designed for optimum performance with a
foam-based mattress. By using high quality super-stretch and upholstery grade
fabric, the cover adds to the support and
comfort of Blu Sleep’s mattress collection.
The models within the six-bed collection
include variations of breathable, open-cell
foam, memory foam, foamed gels, latex,
bio-based foams and polyurethane foams.
In addition to launching a comprehensive
six-line mattress collection and expanding
its successful pillow line, Blu Sleep has updated its strategic business plan. The company started with a plan that’s founded on
a “core business philosophy of helping our
retailers satisfy their customers with innovative, unique and distinctive products
that increase their profit margins.”
From there, they added marketing theme
that encourages potential retailers and
consumers alike to experience the wonder
of their colorful product collections. The
theme of the company’s new marketing
program is, “Come see, touch, feel, and
experience…we know you will love them!”
POP displays reinforce the importance
of testing the products and eye-catching
stands present a variety of pillows, allowing the consumer to feel the difference
between the diverse offerings. Blu Sleep’s
use of color within its products helps RSAs
and consumers visually differentiate the
products within various collections.
Retailers can experience the extensive
variety of Blu Sleep’s pillow, topper and
mattress collections within the company’s
first private showroom at the Las Vegas
World Market Center during the Winter Market. Visit our guide on page 15 for showroom information.
“Customers need to touch, feel and embrace our products,” co-president Elizabeth Ciccolella explains. “They know something is different when they see the color
schemes, the engineered designs and their
uniqueness. Once they touch our pillows,
toppers or mattresses, they will feel the difference and know that it’s not just a marketing claim. They will then understand the importance of offering a substantial upgrade
in quality for a reasonable price.”

Pure LatexBLISS Retailers Can Earn Valuable Points with ‘Learn and Earn’
By Christopher Schriever
This year Pure LatexBLISS will add a new tier
to its award winning “Learn and Earn” online
training and awards program. Similar to the
varying levels of travel rewards programs, the
updated initiative will now include a “World’s
Best Club” for its top 100 performing Retail
Sales Associates. Top associates will be eligible to accrue double points, which can then
be redeemed for higher-end prizes in the
company’s dedicated awards mall.
Originally introduced in 2013, the Learn and
Earn program was designed to help RSAs to
become more educated on Pure LatexBLISS
products, benefits, branding and messages.
To date, the company has rewarded more than
800 prizes, including TVs, designer handbags,
Pure LatexBLISS mattresses, Bose headsets,
and cruises to participating RSAs.
Since the inception of the Learn and
Earn initiative, Pure LatexBLISS has seen
an increase in RSA’s knowledge of products and brand information. The increase
in expertise results in an increase in mattress and accessory sales. Additionally,
RSAs have been driven to learn more so
that they can more effectively explain the
unique features of latex and more efficiently sell products.
“The power of the Learn and Earn program as a training platform is immense, as
we have a great group of RSAs that work
continuously to improve and outperform
the industry,” Pure LatexBLISS president
Kurt Ling said. “We have seen an incredible boost in RSAs familiarity with the brand
since the inception of the program, resulting in increased ticket sales and attachment
rates on supplementary products such as
toppers and pillows. We simply want to reward these outstanding associates for the
phenomenal job they are doing.”
Participants in the World’s Best Club
and new entrants to the Learn and Earn
program can accumulate points, which are
deposited into their rewards account, by
watching online videos, taking online quizzes and answering daily questions regarding Pure LatexBLISS products, branding
and the benefits of latex. The videos and
questions are available to through an online portal. As a member of the “World’s
Best Club,” the upper echelon of the program’s performers will be rewarded with
a certificate honoring them for their work
and dedication.

XSENSOR Releases New Sales Statistics
By Christopher Schriever
The latest retailer sales report is in and
XSENSOR Technology Corporation reports
that mattress retailers’ benefit greatly when
RSAs use their REVEAL mattress recommendation system. XSENSOR released
new sales statistics and experiences from
mattress retail clients that use the REVEAL
mattress recommendation systems.
Company executives say that the REVEAL
system takes the guesswork out of the sale.
The company’s body pressure mapping tool
helps customers find the most comfortable and supportive mattress for their body.
Highly accurate, the pressure imaging technology educates customers with a dynamic,
image of the consumers’ body impression as
its measured on a mattress. This approach
helps calm uncertainty and confusion by
providing real-time insights. The system
helps RSAs ensure their customers that they
have found the right mattress. This confidence leads to faster decision-making and
fewer returns.
XSENSOR reports that its retail clients and
manufacturers have found that the REVEAL
system has helped improve store performance in a multitude of different ways. The
three-step software process guides salespeople and customers through mattress
fitting to provide a more consistent selling
process and create a better shopping experience. By culling down the number of mattress options based on the customers’ sleep
profile and price-point, REVEAL simplifies
the rest-test process. Because the system
provides an unbiased recommendation for
the type of mattress most suitable for cus-
tomers’ comfort and support needs, it builds
consumer confidence and increases the
likelihood of a purchase. One of XSENSOR’s
retail partners explains that the system has
been beneficial in increasing salesperson
creditability and expertise by bringing “the
medical field into play and how pressure
point relief is important to mattress selection. Now customers can select a mattress
that’s best for their body type, not based on
what initially feels good.”
Customers who are confident they have
found the right mattress for their body are
more likely to purchase sooner. This, in turn,
yields higher closing rates: some retailers
have seeing closing rates increase to around
100%, average unit selling price increase by
more than 30% and product returns drop
by 50%. This level of customer satisfaction
helps retailers attract more in-store traffic
through positive word of mouth; customers
that are happy with their REVEAL experience
and purchase are more likely to tell their
friends and family about their unique shopping experience.
REVEAL also offers customized branding
and recommendation opportunities to strength
and reinforce branding and sales processes.

Colonial Unveils Two Unique Marketing Opportunities
By Gretchen Kast
Colonial LLC, the branding and display
company that specializes in helping their
clients sell more beds, will be rolling out two
new marketing solutions in the coming year.
Designed to shape the consumer’s mattress-shopping experience, Colonial’s new
and affordable display headboard program
makes a bold, visible statement while the
company’s new scent marketing initiative
takes a more subtle approach. Both introductions are intended to drive consumers
to specific brands or products and help elevate mattress sales.
The first introduction for 2014 is a new
line-up of POP headboards. Just as top-ofbed materials changed the way mattresses
were marketed in-store, dramatic POP
headboards have been hugely influential in
recent years. With strong details and branding, headboards have proved successful in
making beds stand out on showroom floors.
Colonial’s research and development
team recognized that many of today’s POP
headboards are beautifully but expensively
constructed and designed to stay on the
sales floor much longer than their associated mattress collections. This raises the initial
investment needed and limits their usage.
For manufacturers and retailers who want to
make a strong impact but are not prepared
to invest as much, Colonial has come up
with a cost-effective solution.
Teaming up with a national display company in an exclusive partnership, Colonial
delved into materials-science research to
develop a headboard that more closely mirrors the typical life cycle of popular mattress
collections. Using state-of-the-art designs
and cost-engineered materials, these displays feature eye-catching graphics and optional upgrades such as layering, contouring
and even LED lighting. The new program
is a cost-effective way to make a mattress
collection more competitive and stand out
on the retail floor, with the price starting between $100 and $125 per display.
Colonial will also unveil an entirely new
branding and sales opportunity for mattress manufacturers and retailers in 2014.
The company has developed a program that
harnesses the powerful influence and rapidly
growing appeal of aromatherapy science, or
“scent marketing,” at retail.
With this new program, Colonial offers aromatic sachets that can be incorporated into
the pillow shams on the display beds. These
scents create a relaxing environment for
rest-testing and can even establish a signature aroma to be associated with a specific
mattress collection or brand. Scent is one of
the strongest senses, with the ability to convey certain emotions and memories and also
shape perception. Such a unique marketing
approach goes beyond the traditional, visual
displays to enhance the consumer shopping
environment while reducing stress and potentially leading to more sales.
Colonial provides not only an innovative
consumer experience with this opportunity,
but also an affordable marketing program
with a positive sales impact. Scent has
been proven to increase the retail consumers dwell time as well as the average amount
that they spend. With the price per bed at
Colonial’s new and
affordable display
headboard program
makes a bold, visible
statement while the
company’s new scent
marketing initiative
takes a more subtle
approach.
less than $7, this program is a truly affordable way for manufacturers and retailers to
market their products.
Both of these new marketing opportunities follow Colonial’s commitment to solving
client problems by offering solutions to keep
consumers in retail stores longer. By creating
a comfortable and eye-catching shopping environment, Colonial helps salespeople close
sales and sell more beds.

Each Comfort 4U mattress features four zones with six air chambers that can
be adjusted separately, allowing the sleeper to change their level of comfort
without disturbing their partner. The six adjustable chambers offer 65 unique
settings at the head and the foot of the mattress and 65 additional settings for
the lumbar chamber. In total, there are 4,225 comfort settings available per
side. The collection’s retail price ranges from $2,299 to $3,499 and is available
in Memory Foam, Latex or Gel models. Each mattress offers varying layers
of convoluted super soft foam, gel memory foam and latex to increase air
circulation, regulate sleep temperature, and provide superior pressure relief
and support. The foam encased perimeter support extends and enhances the
comfort to edge of the best, providing a wider sleep surface.
TEMPUR-PEDIC
Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Choice collection offers the brand’s famous pressure-relieving comfort combined with adjustable, personalized comfort on each side of the
bed. Unveiled at the summer Las Vegas Market, the collection puts the “comfort and
control in the hands of consumers, so they can create their own perfect sleep environment,” explained Chief Operating Office Tim Yaggi. Two hand-held remotes allow
each sleeper to uniquely modify his or her side of the bed to achieve their own level
of softness or firmness while the dedicated Lumbar Zone control allows each sleeper
to separately adjust the feel under their lower back. Retailing from $3,499 to $3,999 in

Luxe model. Each remote controls more than 120 comfort settings and boasts a builtin memory button for one-touch recall of a user’s favorite setting.

BOYD SPECIALTY SLEEP
Known for its proprietary air bed designs and occasional-use air bed models, Boyd Specialty
Sleep recently introduced a new Thomasville Synchrony air bed collection.
The seven-model series retails from $1,399 to $3,999 and includes four two-chamber core
models and three beds with six-chamber cores. All cores are made from an eco-friendly,
thermo polyurethane material that’s stronger and more durable than rubber. Comfort materials, which feature Boyd’s patented edge support, include varying layers of gel memory foams,
memory foams and high-density poly foams. Each bed is equipped with an LCD hand-held
control that activates an auto-fill feature with memory, enabling sleepers to program their desired firmness and then rely on the technology to “remember” their preferred setting.
“This line resonates well with affluent consumers from a technological and aesthetic perspective,” says president Dennis Boyd. “The highly attractive Synchrony beds include many of our
patented and patent-pending features in a specialty line that offers adjustable comfort and
support, all under the familiar and respected Thomasville consumer brand.”
COMFORTAIRE
KINGSDOWN
Kingsdown Inc. has developed major innovations in the air bed segment in recent
years with th introduction of two different active technology sleep systems. It first
unveiled the Sleep Smart Intuitive, a hybrid comprised of wrapped coils, high grade
luxury foams and different high quality air bladder systems. Designed to change with
the consumer’s physical changes and comfort needs, the Intuitive model (which retails for $9,999 in queen on an adjustable base) diagnoses a sleeper and understands
what support and pressure relief levels are necessary for optimal comfortable. The
sleep system’s technology intuitively learns its sleeper and continually adjusts itself
to their changing positions while keeping the body in proper alignment, even if the
sleeper experiences weight changes or other orthopedic issues. This combination
creates an improved night’s sleep with fewer sleep interruptions.
For retailers and consumers looking for a step down from the Intuitive, Kingsdown
also developed a sister bed called the Progeny. This high quality air bladder and foam
sleep system provides consumers with the ability to manually adjust the bed’s support and pressure relief capabilities in accordance to the preferred or recommended
setting. Like the Intuitive model, Progeny can also be manually adjusted to the changes of its sleeper’s anatomy, but retails for $4,500 in queen on a flat base.
Comfortaire has been manufacturing air
beds and delivering Individualized Sleep
Experiences for over 30 years. The company’s unique mattress construction has
been developed to better provide the three
key elements of sleep: support, posture, and
comfort. Comfortaire Beds are made with a
Dynamic Support system, a patented box
top design that includes a static base support layer, a low profile air chamber and a
plush surface comfort layer. This innovative
design positions the air at the surface and
extends it all the way to the edges of the mattress, to provide uniform support and eliminate surface pressure. Dual air chambers
allow partners to adjust their side of the mattress to their own individualized needs with a
remote control, while the WF6200 air pump
provides unmatched air pressure retention,
better inflation, and programmable memory
settings to ensure a better comfort range.
With beds that range from the introductory
Original Comfort Collection to the luxury,
adjustable Elite Comfort lineup, Comfortaire
makes innovative air technology available for
a wide variety of consumer price points.

Dormeo Octaspring Introduces Aesthetics Updates and its First Hybrid Collection
By Gretchen Kast
Under the new leadership of North American
Chief Executive Officer Jon Stowe, Dormeo
Octaspring is planning to unveil several significant changes at the upcoming Winter Las
Vegas Market. In addition its first hybrid collection, the company is changing the aesthetics, feels and merchandising approach.
The new models feature sleek design elements, cooling technologies and tout plusher
feels to better appeal to the U.S. consumer.
Depending on the comfort feel, Dormeo
Dolcé’s five mattresses feature one to three
layers of its patented Octaspring technology using various numbers of support zones
and levels of firmness. Each bed is covered
with CoolNTech fabric, which uses microcapsules with cooling phase changed materials, giving it a cool-to-the-touch sensation and includes the company’s signature
Eco-cell core for a supportive night’s sleep.
The line’s air-mesh side panels allow the
honeycombed Octaspring coils to breathe
for an added cooling effect. Textured white
patterns top the company’s new stylish and
contemporary covers, while the side boarders feature a sleek wave design.
Throughout the collection, layers of Octaspring coils and an Eco-Cell core provide
pressure relieving support and comfort, in
varying thicknesses. The middle layer of the
top four models has five ergonomic zones
to provide support where the body needs
it. Mattresses within Octasprings collection
also feature a two-inch top surface layer as
well for added comfort.
“Our dealers asked for product with a
plusher feel so that was the first enhancement we made when we started manufacturing in Virginia earlier in the year. The Dormeo Dolcé collection still offers the ultimate
support we had before, but we have made
the memory foam layers softer in these
models for ultimate comfort as well,” said
Stowe. “The second big change was the
aesthetic updates. We wanted the products
to have a sleeker design and look unlike
anything else on the market.”
Dormeo Octaspring will also introduce its
first hybrid line, Dormeo Sérénité at the upcoming Winter Las Vegas Market. The innovative hybrid line will combine the company’s patented Octaspring technology with
the benefits of latex for the ultimate in temperature regulation, comfort and support. A
company first, Dormeo Sérénité will include
sustainable materials such as bamboo.
Two inches of Talalay Latex, covered with an
ultra-soft cover, with bamboo ticking, provide
a plush feel for this three-bed collection. Each
mattress in the series also uses a stylish, sleek
white and black color scheme with a textured
fabric design and a wave pattern on the boarder. The air-mesh sides allow the honeycombed
Octaspring coils to breathe, creating an optimal temperature for the sleeper.
“Hybrids are the emerging trend in the
bedding industry and since we brought our
revolutionary Octspring to market, the logical
next step was to create an Octaspring mat-
tress that could incorporate other materials to
increase its comfort and support and to enhance the overall quality of sleep consumers
will get with our product,” said Stowe.
The Dormeo Sérénité collection includes
three models- Dormeo Sérénité, restBED
Dormeo Sérénité blissBED and Dormeo
Sérénité luxeBED. The 8.5-inch Dormeo
Sérénité restBED has one layer of two-inch
Octaspring coils and four-inches of the company’s signature Eco-cell core and uses a
three zone Octaspring support system. With
a profile of 10.5-inches, the Dormeo Sérénité blissBED features two-layers of twoinch Octaspring coils with differing firmness
levels and a four-inch Eco-cell core. The
top model, the 12.5-inch Dormeo Sérénité
luxeBED includes three layers of three and
two-inch Octaspring coils and a three-inch
Eco-cell core providing the highest level of
pressure relieving comfort. Both beds’ middle layer uses five ergonomic zones of bodysupporting Octaspring coils to give the body

Kingsdown Focuses on Design with Updated Fabrics, Tufting and Components
By Gretchen Kast
Kingsdown, Inc. is updating its mattress
collections by adding more avante garde
fabrics, luxuriously styled borders, highquality tufting, vertical coil-on-coil zoning and the newest innovations in latex to
three of its key Kingsdown lines at the Winter Las Vegas Market. The new designs are
considered to be the largest line overhaul
Kingsdown has ever engineered.
At the top of the line, the brand is relaunching the Kingsdown Handley Collection that it classifies as a “unique, high
luxury, designer line,” featuring a stylish,
proprietary application of lace over contrasting high quality fabrics. Its exquisite
tailoring, luxurious upholstery, hand-made,
zoned, high-density wrapped coil units and
premium components within the mattress
offer a one-of-a-kind look with the comfort
for which Kingsdown is known. The Handley Collection utilizes over 2,000 tri-zoned,
wrapped coils in its foundation, adding another level of durability to the collection.
With price points that range from $7,999 to
$9,999 in queen, Kingsdown believes the
Handley Collection will help it re-emerge
as a leader in the ultra luxury mattress category by providing the best in comfort and
style at affordable luxury prices.
Next is Kingsdown Traditions, which
presents a fresh styling approach to the
company’s luxury mattresses. Featuring
new, exquisite woven fabrics, hand tufting, assorted luxury hypo-allergenic fibers,
the collection leverages the latest offerings
in latex components to provide a “step-up
story” the consumer will see and feel. Priced
at $2,999 to $7,999 in queen, the new Traditions lineup presents high-end Kingsdown
luxury at more affordable price points.
The company’s Kingsdown Select is a luxury collection of latex mattresses adorned
in designer woven fabrics to present a more
traditional look. Six key models are shown
on the company’s proprietary “progressive
foam core,” which offers unique air flow,
more motion separation and maintains its
original firmness significantly better than all
other mattress brands. Kingsdown Select
leverages new latex components including
slow recovering latex with visco memory
foam and latex with gel and even graphite.
This line will carry retail prices of $2,299 to
$4,999 in queen.
At every price point, Kingsdown Passions stands up to its competition by offering the consumer key points of differentiation in materials and price. Passions
boasts more coils than any other brand,
more than doubling the number of earlier
models to 1,791. The line is designed to
fill a void in the marketplace, offering highperformance mattresses at middle-market
price points. Kingsdown has expanded the
collection with new models featuring the
cooling benefits of unique gel engineered
components, such as gel-infused fibers
and foams. The line also features a unique
coil system for increased contoured support, as well as superior tailoring and designer euro styling to create a hip, fashionable look. With 18 models, it is one of
the company’s largest lines with a variety
of constructions, comfort feels and competitive price points ranging from $699 to
$2,099 in queen.
“The new introductions and the retrofitting of some of our legacy lines came out
through dialogue with our dealers who,
interestingly enough, asked us to be more
like the Kingsdown of yore, when we were
known for luxury and only using the finest
materials and constructions,” said Kingsdown President and CEO Frank Hood.
“While over the past 20 years we might
have diverted from this strategy, we are returning to what our brand has historically
stood for. We believe this news returns luster to the brand.”
The new designs are
considered to be the
largest line overhaul
Kingsdown has ever
engineered.

Spring Time Features Value-Priced Gel and Handcrafted Collections in Las Vegas
“We have been
watching the growth
of the luxury segment
for many years and
have long felt that
some consumers...
were being left out
of segment...We are
offering that consumer
access to that world
at a price point they
can afford,” said Vice
President and National
Account Sales Manager
Sarah Appleton.
26 BEDROOM / Winter 2014
By Gretchen Kast
Spring Time Bedding is setting its sights
on the value-oriented consumer with the
introduction of the four-model Handcrafted mattress line in addition to the popular
GoPedic Gel Mattress Series at the Winter
Las Vegas Market.
All four models in the Handcrafted line of
beds are hybrids, incorporating elements of
gel-infused memory foam, latex, convoluted
foam and encased coils in firm, plush and
pillow-top SKUs. The collection features a
luxurious, plush stretch knit ticking that not
only promotes air flow, but provides extra
support to the pressure points for both back
and side sleepers.
The hand-tufting for the mattresses will
be done in Spring Time’s factory in China,
where artisans have been building high end
European-style mattresses for many years.
The mattresses come compressed and
rolled, using a special process that assures
fast recovery. This not only reduces the mattress’ carbon footprint and warehousing
costs, but makes shipping anywhere in the
country an easy and cost effective process.
“We have been watching the growth of
the luxury segment for many years and have
long felt that some consumers—let’s call
them the Target shopper—were being left
out of segment. These consumers wanted
fine craftsmanship and quality components,
but there was no way they could afford mattresses costing $10,000 or more,” said Vice
President and National Account Sales Manager Sarah Appleton. “We are offering that
consumer access to that world at a price
point they can afford.” The Handcrafted series will retail from $1,500 to $4,000 for the
top model, in queen.
Appleton noted the tremendous retailer
interest in the line, saying, “The dealers
view Handcrafted as a high margin opportunity on their floors. They are looking to
complement their collections with unique
and different products, but more importantly, ones where they can actually make
a reasonable profit.”
As the demand for gel-infused memory
foam sleep products continues to grow,
Spring Time Bedding will also feature its
successful GoPedic Gel Series at the Las Vegas Market. Made with uniquely configured
gel-infused high density memory foam, this
value-priced series provides retailers with
a solution to consumer complaints about
ventilation and comfort commonly associated with memory foam products. The three
models are available in 10-, 12- and 14-inch
mattresses that range in price from $599 to
$1,999 in queen.
“Our GoPedic business has blossomed
nationally over this past year,” Appleton explained. “Retailers are responding well to the
design, comfort, support and pricing of the
line, among other attributes.”
Appleton said a major reason many
dealers are carrying the product has been
the consistency of that “amazing feel” of
its Gel Memory Foam. “Dealers were complaining about the consistency of foam
specs on competitive products—what was
delivered was not what was ordered,” she
continued. “Since we control our entire
production process—including the formulation of the memory foam and HD poly
support base—we can attest to the integrity of the mix and deliver the right feel each
and every time.”

Simmons Introduces Innovative ComforPedic iQ Mattress
By Gretchen Kast
This January Market, Simmons Bedding
Company delivers personalized comfort with
the introduction of the smart, self-adjusting
ComforPedic iQ. The ComforPedic iQ Sleep
System uses patented, clinically tested Smart
ResponseTechnology that naturally responds
and continuously adapts to the body without
motors, buttons, plugs or electronics.
Sixteen Smart Response foam chambers,
found in the model’s queen size mattress,
automatically calibrate to each individual’s
body weight and sleep position—and will recalibrate each time a person moves throughout the night. The result is a mattress that
provides personalized support and pressure
relief for each sleeper’s specific body type.
Complementing the Smart Response Technology are layers of memory foam for cooling,
conforming comfort. Ultra Cool memory foam
contains an open cell structure designed to
deliver temperature regulation and a quick re-
sponse rate for cool, comfortable sleep without that sinking “quicksand” feeling.
Because of its unique design, ComforPedic iQ is the first and only mattress endorsed by Dr. Andrew Weil, a world-renowned pioneer and leader in the field of
integrative medicine. Dr. Weil, the Founder
and Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona
Health Sciences Center, is a long-time proponent of the importance of sleep. With five
consecutive New York Times #1 bestsellers
and over 2.8 million visits to his website per
month, Dr. Weil is a global authority on leading a healthy lifestyle that takes into account
mind, body and spirit.
Says Dr. Weil on his endorsement of ComforPedic iQ: “I am a long-time proponent
of the importance of getting enough goodquality sleep and always emphasize its impact on overall health. For those of you who
have struggled with sleep issues, choosing
the right mattress is an important step towards getting quality rest. The ComforPedic
iQ is the first and only mattress I have ever
endorsed, because I believe the Smart Response technology provides a practical and
effective sleep solution.”
Simmons will launch a wide scale, multimedia advertising campaign for ComforPedic iQ in Spring 2014. Much like the Beautyrest and ComforPedic campaigns of 2013,
ComforPedic iQ ads will be seen on national
network and cable television throughout the
peak summer selling period. Advertising
also extends to the web, social and mobile
with a robust digital campaign. The campaign will include Dr. Weil and stem from the
line’s use of advanced technology designed
to give consumers a holistic, effective sleep
solution. The new four-model line offers a
25-year limited warranty and is priced from

BIO-TEXTIMA brings its VitalWOOD Wooden-Coil Spring System to the US
By Christopher Schriever
BIO-TEXTIMA’s VitalWOOD handmade,
anatomically active wooden coil spring
system will be on display at the Winter Las
Vegas Market.
“Our first goal is to simply introduce this
internationally award-winning, tested and
proven Anatomical Wooden Spring technology,” says BIO-TEXTIMA’s Commercial
Director Gabor Voros, “and our premiumquality natural, bio-based beds made of the
finest Belgian and Italian fabrics, HybridLatex, Biogreen cold foam, as well as organic wool, cotton, coconut fiber and 100%
organic latex rubber. Our second goal is to
reach out to qualified retailers, manufacturers and perhaps even suppliers to create a North American strategic partnership
to explore the very best way to market the
World’s Only Wooden Spring Mattress.”
While the wooden coil concept is completely new to the North American market,
VitalWOOD Mattresses and Boxsprings have
been successfully marketed and sold through
premium mattress retailers in Austria, Switzerland, southern Germany, northern Italy,
Russia, Singapore and China. “Our company
has been manufacturing ‘bio-harmonious’
wooden bedroom furniture for 20 years. With
our ever–increasing Swiss-based knowledge
of providing anatomic and ergonomic beds
over ten years time, we then opened a new
chapter in ‘natural sleep culture’ by introducing the VitalWOOD metal-free wooden coil
mattress in 2011,” says Voros. Since its introduction, VitalWOOD has won the IMM Interior
Innovation Award in 2011 at Cologne, Germany and successfully expanded distribution
and sales in both Europe and Asia.
“This is a recognized, established and
scientifically tested coil system that pro-
vides unparalleled levels of comfort and
support,” Voros explains. “Plus these coils
are made of renewable hardwood sources,
engineered, fine-tooled and tested for use
in superiorly designed upper-middle and
premium performance bio-based mattresses. We use very precise Swiss technology
and only the finest sourced and certified
materials to create our mattresses.”
The VitalWOOD Masterpiece bed, made

By Gretchen Kast
SensorPEDIC will introduce its newest
gel-infused memory foam mattress collection, the Royal Elegance Series, at the
Winter Las Vegas Furniture Market. Using
its best materials, SensorPEDIC’s Royal
Elegance Series supports the company’s
brand strategy, “Sleep Better, Feel Better
and Live Better,” where every aspect of the
sleep system must work together to deliver
the best night’s sleep. The new four model
line will feature the company’s innovative
ICOOL technology system which incorporates multiple cooling technologies for
maximum breathability to allow consumers
to sleep cool.
The Royal Elegance Series includes four
models- Firm, Extra Firm, Cushion Firm
and Luxury Firm. The Firm model includes
two-inches of gel-infused memory foam
and a six-inch heavy-duty base foam support layer, while the Extra Firm model uses
two-inches of gel-infused memory foam
with an eight-inch base-foam support layer.
The 12-inch Cushion Firm model features
three-inches of the company’s gel-infused
foam, including a special air gel layer, and a
nine-inch base-foam support layer. The top
mattress in the series, the 14-inch Luxury
Firm model, uses four-inches of gel-infused
memory foam, with a double layer of the
company’s air gel memory foam along
with a 10-inch base-foam support layer. All
beds in the collection feature heat dissipation fabric in the middle layer, a circular knit
EuroTop cover design, VentAIR mesh side
panel trim, and an ultra suede border along
the mattress base.
“We created the Royal Elegance Series
to stay true to our number one goal of providing consumers with the best sleep environment possible. We understand that to
sell quality sleep requires multiple tools and
at SensorPEDIC we want to be the com-
pany that can offer all these components,”
said Executive Vice President of Sales and
Marketing Robert O’Connell. “By expanding
our product portfolio we are aiming to show
retailers that we can be the one-stop-shop
for all their needs from top-of-bed offerings
to mattresses. We have incorporated the
latest technologies and the highest quality
materials into this line and are confident retailers will respond well at market.”

Classic Brands Offers Maximum Cooling with new Reticulated Memory Foam Line
By Gretchen Kast
Classic Brands will introduce its unique REVO
Collection this month at the Winter Las Vegas
Market. The new collection uses reticulated
memory foam to achieve maximum airflow
and a body-contouring wave shape for added
comfort. The foam, while touting all the benefits of traditional memory foam, uses a unique
reticulation process in which the cell structures
are completely open, allowing air to flow freely
and offering a greater cooling effect than any
other material available today.
The collection will include nine-, 10- and 12inch models. The 10- and 12-inch SKUs feature the company’s new wave design concept
created to conform to the body while allowing
for maximum airflow capacity. The layers also
feature unique ridges on the surface for heightened breathability throughout the foam. Each
model has a knit cover with a cooling spacer
fabric, keeping the body at an optimal tem-

perature on the surface of the mattress, while
using varying layers of high-density memory
foam, ventilated gel foam and the reticulated
memory foam.
“Temperature regulation has come to the
forefront of the industry with the popularity of
gel and other cooling materials. We decided
it wasn’t enough to just add these components to our products but to take a step further and use a reticulation process to open
up the cell structure in the foam completely.
Now in addition to the new cooling features,
the amount of airflow and breathability has
been maximized to provide the coolest—and
most comfortable—night’s sleep,” said Classic Brands Chief Executive Officer Mike Zippelli. “Another innovation we created for this
collection is the body-enveloping wave design
of the layers in the 10- and 12-inch models.
The natural wave shape places the sleeper in
a more natural position, offering support to key
pressure points on the body and eliminating
tossing and turning when lying on the bed. We
are confident that the advanced temperature
regulating technology combined with the innovative wave design will help close the deal at
point-of-sale.”
The REVO Collection’s nine-inch model includes two-inches of reticulated memory foam
and seven-inches of two-pound high density
base foam. The 10-inch model uses threeinches of reticulated memory foam and seveninches of reticulated high density base foam in
the new wave design. The top model features
three inches of reticulated memory foam, two
inches of ventilated gel-infused memory foam
and seven inches of reticulated high density
base foam and uses the wave design. The 10
and 12-inch models also use ridged memory
layers for adding breathability. The suggested
retail price in queen is $999–$1499.

“Our message to
dealers has always
focused on the art and
science behind building
the best possible sleep
products—a mission
to which Englander has
been dedicated since
its founding in 1894,”
noted company CEO
and president Kevin
Toman.
By Christopher Schriever
To mark its 120 years of success in the mattress industry, Englander Sleep Products is
offering aggressive values across all of its
product offerings—plus special celebratory
models under its TensionEase, Posture Support Plus and Nature’s Finest brands—all to
salute its 120th Anniversary.
The three new Anniversary Edition models use ultra-premium components and
designs intended to give retailers highly
attractive values to promote with premium
Englander brands.
“Our message to dealers has always focused on the art and science behind building the best possible sleep products—a mission to which Englander has been dedicated
since its founding in 1894,” noted company
CEO and president Kevin Toman.
“We’ve always believed that when you put
more into your products and your commitment to quality is consistent and unwavering
over the years, that effort builds your reputation and becomes your trademark.”
A video, complete with major events from
the last 120 years, traces Englander’s development since 1894, can be viewed on our
website (www.bedroomretailers.com).
Englander’s special Anniversary Edition
collection, set to retail from $999 to $1,499
in queen starts with a Tension Ease “Edison”
model that uses a foam-encased, eight-inch
zoned and wrapped coil unit. First introduced
in 1957, the Tension Ease sleep system was
designed to deliver stress-free sleep. Its
encased coil construction was patented in
2003. The “Edison” model features layers of
visco and super soft foams, crowned with a
perforated gel topper for cooling comfort.
At the mid level, Englander is offering
an Anniversary Edition model in its justintroduced Posture Support Plus line. Designed “for bodies of every shape and size
including the larger sleeper,” the “Cleveland” Anniversary Edition model features
the company’s patent-pending Dual Coil
construction: a three-zone, fabric-encased
micro-coil unit that’s securely fastened to
a seven-inch, heavy-gauge foam-encased
unit beneath it.
The top unit delivers body conformance
and comfort; the bottom unit lends exceptional strength, support and durability to the
mattress. Multiple foam layers topped by a
perforated gel layer are also included, touted
as “The BIG SLEEP Solution.”
At the top of the Anniversary Edition line
is a Nature’s Finest “Phillipe” model. A specialty brand that Englander first brought to
market in 1996, the Nature’s Finest mattress
combines a high-density poly foam base
with quality latex, super soft foams and a
layer of perforated gel at the top.
Englander’s Anniversary Edition models
range in height from 11.5 to nearly 15 inches and carry 20-year warranties. The beds
are quilted and offered in plush top and box
top styles.
To attract additional attention on retail
store floors the company has created anniversary-themed light boxes, floor mats and
headboards, along with coordinated top-ofbed accessories.

Pure LatexBLISS Appeals to “Casually Organic” Customers with All Natural Collection
By Christopher Schriever
In a move to capture more market share in
the fast-growing organic space, Pure LatexBLISS will debut its new All Natural collection featuring three mattresses and two pillow offerings at the winter Las Vegas Market.
Building upon the legacy of utilizing only the
highest quality all natural Talalay latex in its
product lines, the company has introduced
a number of all natural components into the
line to support the new models.
“Our story is simple to tell. The All Natural
collection offers retailers and consumers all
the benefits of a traditional mattress without the trade off normally associated with
a more natural product. These mattresses
are different than other organic offerings
because they look and feel just as great as
our other popular collections,” said Pure
LatexBLISS President Kurt Ling.
The All Natural collection’s three mattresses—available in eight-inch, 10-inch
and 12-inch profile options—feature an
all-natural Oeko-Tex certified Talalay latex
pressure relief layer nestled atop a sixinch all natural Talalay latex support core.
Each mattress has a supple GOTS certified organic cotton stretch fabric cover to
compliment the uplifting, buoyant feel of
the Talalay latex underneath, as well as an
organic wool fire retardant layer. Committed
to helping consumers create a bed tailored
to their personal preferences, the All Natural
collection is rounded out with two all natural Talalay latex pillows available in high and
low profile models.
“Over the last several years, the sleep
products industry has done a good job recognizing ‘truly devoted organic consumers’
who strive for sustainable, organic options
in every aspect of life. That said, we’ve
identified greater opportunity with the much
faster growing ‘casually organic’ or ‘sometimes-natural’ customer. For example, these
customers may buy organic strawberries
but not apples; they may choose parabenfree shampoo but not phosphate-free dishwasher detergent. This group is concerned
with their family’s well being and is taking
steps, one at a time, to make their family
healthier,” said Ling. “The casually organic
consumer is willing to pay more for an all
natural product. From produce to personal
care items, energy efficient home products
to sleep products, they are gradually moving toward buying more natural products for
their home.”
Pure LatexBLISS has introduced POP to
create “all natural” sleep centers in-store. For
storefronts, the company offers retailers outdoor banners that read “Experience All Natural Mattresses Here.” The collection retails for
$3,599 to $5,999 in queen, with the complimentary line of pillows available for $159.

Magniflex Debuts 15 New Mattresses In Las Vegas
By Gretchen Kast
Magniflex is prepared to unveil an astounding
15 new mattresses at the Winter Las Vegas
Market. The new mattresses fit within five
new collections that the Italian manufacturer
has made exclusively for the US market.
Designed to meet the variety of demands
from consumers within the American market, the company’s new mattresses integrate research conducted by the University
of Florence.
Magniflex has built these newest beds using processes and materials it is internationally recognized for--including their patented,
technologically advanced MemoFoam.
30 BEDROOM / Winter 2014
MemoFoam is a high-density microcellular memory foam designed to maximize spinal alignment, facilitate optimal circulation
and react rapidly to changes in temperature
and pressure. Mattresses made with this
proprietary foam provide an adaptive sleeping experience for prolonged comfort.
Along with the new beds, Magniflex will
showcase mattresses made MagniGel foam
as well as Dual Comfort. MagniGel is the
company’s highly breathable foam, designed
to disperse heat evenly for a cooler night’s
sleep. One of Maganiflex’s most popular
beds is the DualComfort mattress. These
mattresses feature two separate foam cores
inside a removable cover. Each core is easily
reversed and includes both a soft and firm
side. The distinctly different comfort sides allow co-sleepers to customize their sleeping
experience based on personal preference.
Billy Curtright, Magniflex’s U.S. National
Sales Manager, says that, “DualComfort
gives users a customizable sleep experience
without the custom mattress price tag.”
As with all of Magniflex’s luxury mattresses
and pillows, each product within the collection is made with patented memory foam and
memory gel technologies. The products are
OEKO-TEX certified, sourced from local, EUregulated suppliers and manufactured to reduce ecological impact from start to finish.

Therapedic International Debuts High-End and Promotionally Priced Mattresses
By Christopher Schriever
Further expanding its portfolio to include a
wide range of price points, Therapedic International will introduce a new high-end model
to its gel-latex Buoyancy mattress collection
along with three additions to its promotionally-priced Memory Touch matress collection.
Like the other mattresses in the Buoyancy
series, the new high-end Oceanic model features two of the most popular trends in the
bedding industry—latex and gel—with an
additional high-tech foam layer which provides 55 percent more “bounce” and support than other foams. Each model in the
collection boasts the company’s proprietary
HourGlass Back Support System made from
an overlay of cooling gel.
The super-plush Oceanic features a layer
of innovative high resiliency foam designed
with more supportive and bouncy characteristics. Atop this layer, the 14-inch profile
mattress uses progressively softer one-inch
layers of latex for a luxurious yet supportive
feel. It also features Therapedic’s unique
hourglass-design made from a gel-layer
fused atop natural latex to provide both
cooling benefits and support for key areas
of the body, namely shoulders, hips and the
lumbar area. The Oceanic has a suggested
retail price of $3,999 in queen.
“Response to the entire Buoyancy Collection has been overwhelmingly positive
because it meets the demand for mattresses that combine the cooling benefits
of gel and the comfort of latex, an important trend in the specialty sleep category.
Our new Oceanic model goes one step
further incorporating one of the most innovative foams on the market to provide an
even more comfortable and cooler sleep
experience,” said Therapedic International President and CEO Gerry Borreggine.
“Therapedic is known for offering high
quality, innovative, and stylish products at
competitive prices. Buoyancy utilizes gel,

The entire Buoyancy Collection boasts a
contemporary stretch knit ticking with an
abstract pattern in a sleek lavender, grey
and white color palette to stand out on
the showroom floor. The collection’s four
other models include the base model—the
11-inch Arctic—which features the innovative hourglass gel-topped latex set atop
a foam base; the 12-inch Indian includes
two one-inch layers of latex; the 13-inch
Atlantic model consists of three one-inch
layers of latex; and the 14-inch Pacific,
boasts four one-inch layers of natural latex for the ultimate in comfort and durability. Suggested retail prices range from
$1,299-$2,999 in queen.
Designed to widen a retailer’s price point
range for domestically manufactured visco
memory foam and gel infused foam mattresses, the Memory Touch Collection three
new SKUs include updated materials and a
new look at pricing under $1,000.
“Therapedic is known within the industry
as the number one brand alternative. Simply
put, we are nimble enough to provide retailers with products that will give them an edge
over their competitors,” said Therapedic
International President and CEO Gerry Borreggine. “The new additions to our popular
Memory Touch collection will help retailers
introduce visco memory foam and gel infused foam mattresses to consumers looking for value products. As gel memory foam
offerings continue to be a growing part of
the specialty sleep category, we recognized
that we could successfully bring promotionally priced American made mattresses—built
with high quality materials—to market.”
The Memory Touch Collection has now
been expanded to include three new models
that all provide exceptional support, comfort
and durability. The line’s sleek, updated look
is designed with a brown micro suede border and a beige plush zippered cover made
with an ultra-soft, breathable and absorbent
stretch knit fabric. Moonlit Night has a 12inch profile and features a two-inch comfort
and cooling layer of the company’s EcoGel
swirl gel memory foam. The eight-inch Morning Glory and 10-inch Dusk models are designed with the same high quality pressure
sensitive memory foam for which the company is known. The retail price for the collection is $599–$999.

Carolina Mattress Guild’s Embraces Sustainability with E-Z Sleep Mattresses
By Gretchen Kast
Since first opening its
doors more than 20 years
ago, Carolina Mattress
Guild has been sourcing materials and manufacturing its mattresses
in the United States. This commitment to
American-made products has translated
seamlessly into a strong focus on sustainability in recent years. Following the successful introduction of the Nature’s Image
and Natural Living collections in 2008, Carolina Mattress Guild has pushed the envelope
of eco-friendly mattresses. The company’s
E-Z Sleep mattress line-up features an innovative recycled material called Repreve.*
The E-Z Sleep collection is made up of six
compressed mattress models, offered in both
innerspring and all-foam iterations. Both the
Renew pocketed coil and Resilience all-foam
line-ups utilize natural latex, CertiPUR-US
certified soy foams, in addition to woven fabric covers made from Repreve, a unique fiber
made from recycled materials that include
post-industrial waste and used plastic bottles.
In developing the E-Z Sleep collection,
Carolina Mattress Guild focused on targeting
younger, dorm- or apartment-dwelling consumers with a design that it could easily be
compressed, stored and transported by both
retailers and consumers. The company was
introduced to Unifi Manufacturing, the creator
of Repreve fabric, as they were searching for
a wrinkle-free material to use within the collection. Repreve’s quick recovery capabilities
made it the perfect match for a compressed
mattress, and because the fibers are “first
quality,” they feel as soft to the touch as nonRepreve woven fabrics. Additionally, Repreve’s
sustainability story went hand-in-hand with the
E-Z Sleep collection’s target demographic;
research has shown younger consumers are
more concerned with the environmental effects of the products they purchase.
* Repreve is a trademark of Unifi, Inc.
32 BEDROOM / Winter 2014
This partnership marks a first for the
bedding industry. While Repreve is used in
other consumer products, E-Z Sleep is the
first and only mattress collection to utilize
the innovative fabric. Carolina Mattress
Guild has highlighted this environmental
story with the collection’s in-store marketing. Every mattress includes a tag that outlines the number of recycled plastic bottles
that went into the making of the bed: ranging from 65 bottles in a twin to 179 bottles
in a king. Following the success of this collection, Carolina Mattress Guild has a new
Repreve top-of-bed program—including a
pillow sham and foot protector—currently
in production.
As an active member of the Sustainable
Furnishings Council, Carolina Mattress Guild
is committed to expanding its breadth of
eco-friendly products and educating retailers and consumers about new ways to introduce sustainability into home furnishings.

Spaldin Continues to Revolutionize Sleep Solutions
In 2008 Spaldin
pioneered the
importance of Thermal
comfort with our unique
tubular SErgoFlow
mattress.
34 BEDROOM / Winter 2014
By Gretchen Kast
Spaldin Sleep Systems highlights the use of
innovative materials and constructions with
the North American introduction of its new
collection at the Winter Las Vegas market.
“Since we landed in the USA in 2008, we
have been offering retailers and consumers
proven, tested and documented sleep solutions that take us away from the noise and
squawking of the jungle of false and weak
claims and “me too” materials”, says Oscar
Valdemoros, President of Spaldin.
“Thermal comfort that now seems to be a
main focus of the industry was overlooked
for years even though it is a major factor affecting the quality of sleep. Spaldin, in our
aim to mimic nature, has always had thermal
comfort in mind. We have always researched
to incorporate the key elements of thermal
conductivity and air permeability in the materials used to build our mattresses and how
they interact with the Sleep and Circadian
Cycles of a human body,” Valdemoros says.
In 2008 Spaldin pioneered the importance
of thermal comfort with our unique tubular
SErgoFlow mattress. In spring 2013 it introduced the Gemma, a unique and patent
pending mattress construction that uses uniform Gem-like foams to increase airflow and
thermal regulation. Gemma, in a short time,
has achieved national distribution with some
of the biggest USA mattress retailers.
Maximizing, quantifying and externally certifying thermal comfort is one of
the biggest driving forces behind Spaldin
product engineering. “We were the first
company to offer our customers independently tested mattresses with an objective
rating to help them make their choice. Our
customers now have a way to compare the
thermal comfort performance of mattresses regardless of the manufacturer or the
materials. This allows a real way to differentiate real performance from gimmicks”,
says Valdemoros.
At the Winter Las Vegas Market, Spaldin
will introduce revolutionary new or reformulated materials and constructions, including
SNaturComb, an innovative honeycomb,
zoned latex construction made of FSC certified 100 % natural rubber. It is created using
a new unique process that uses neither the
traditional and energy consuming Talalay or
Dunlop processes.
The first of its type, the SMoreLife is a
sort continuous spring made from renewable plastic polymers. Neither a foam, innerspring nor latex mattress, this design is
a new and revolutionary concept. Spaldin’s
latest release in its SClimatic line is an
eye catching, multilayer, ergonomically
designed mattress called the Cool Evolution, made with thermally modified plant
based memory foam. It looks like no other
Spaldin mattress. “We’re always pushing
the envelope, going one step further” said
Valdemoros.
Spaldin will also reintroduce the iMatt,
the 12-chamber intelligent airbed first
shown at last winter’s Las Vegas Market.
In its new and improved version iMatt features sleep monitoring, this function continuously checks the quality of sleep being
achieved and automatically reconfigures
the profile of the mattress until the quality
of sleep is maximized.

Environmentalism goes beyond using all-natural materials. From waste management to energy efficiency to product
recycling—there are many different ways to introduce sustainable practices into the manufacturing process in order to
offer a truly environmentally-friendly product.
WHAT DOES YOUR COMPANY DO TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT?
As an industry producer, we are extremely conscious of the impact that
our products and processes have on the environment. Probably two of the
most meaningful ways we demonstrate that
objective involve our energy self-sufficiency
and our foam manufacturing procedure.
Last summer we invested nearly $3 million in
solar-paneled roof systems for both our Fontana, Calif. and St. Louis facilities. Not only are
we seeing tremendous energy savings, but
we’re also selling excess electrical power that
we generate back to major energy providers.
We use a certified “eco-friendly” process in
manufacturing the foam it incorporates into its
sleep products. The foam is produced in modern sealed, pressurized chambers that allow
for control of factors like barometric pressure,
heat and humidity. Virtually all of the harmful
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are contained and prevented from reaching the atmosphere.
This process employs pressure rather than
chemicals to control the physical properties of
the foam. As a result, the foams we use have
a more consistent cell structure and offer enhanced strength and performance.”
Boyd Specialty Sleep also was one of the first
bedding manufacturers to meet Level 1 safety
and environmental requirements established
by the Specialty Sleep Association (SSA).
The Level 1 SSA rating is currently offered on
Boyd’s new Thomasville® Natural Flex® Ultra
latex line, among other sleep collections.
Consumers don’t want a passive, static product. They want a bed that will adjust to relieve
their pressure and pain, help their partner to
stop snoring and be comfortable whether
they’re working, reading or sleeping.

Naturepedic takes a serious approach towards reducing our carbon footprint.
We focus on non-petroleum
materials, ingredients, and
components. In particular,
we use organic cotton, organic wool, organic
latex, organic encased coils, and other sustainable materials. We do not use polyurethane
foam in our products. Our workforce is mostly
Amish, who use low-tech manufacturing techniques. All scraps, returned products, and
other non-usable items are given to the Amish
community for recycling.
—BARRY CIK,
OWNER OF NATUREPEDIC
A carbon footprint is
actually two footprints. The
primary footprint is the total of all the direct carbon
dioxide emissions you
personally produce or are
responsible for. During our manufacturing process we produce zero. Even our fork lift trucks
are electric. Certainly, we contribute when we
fly. We do not operate our own delivery services and we own no trucks. Secondarily, we
source raw materials as close to our point of
manufacturing as possible: wool from California, cotton from Texas, fabrics from the southern United States and all our packaging and
materials are manufactured locally.
We completely recycled our scape, and you
would be hard-pressed to find a garbage can
on the floor. From the outset, OMI has been
wholly dedicated to supporting America’s organic farmers and thoroughly supports both
the spirit and goals of reducing carbon footprints throughout the world.

Cooking up a sleep-friendly diet in 2014
MICHAEL J. BREUS, PHD,
THE SLEEP DOCTOR
38 BEDROOM / Winter 2014
There’s the old adage, “you are what you
eat.” But it is also true that choosing the
right foods can actually help you sleep better. Many of the foods that are most healthful
to our bodies and our waistlines are also the
foods that can help us sleep better. It’s not
difficult to keep good sleep in mind when
making good food choices as part of your
resolutions this year.
Reach for these healthy, mineral-rich foods:
Magnesium is a mineral that functions to
relax nerves and muscles and also promotes
healthy circulation. Deficiencies of magnesium
have been associated with several sleep
disorders, including insomnia and restless
leg syndrome. Foods high in magnesium are
some of the most sleep-friendly foods around.
Bananas are a great source of magnesium.
So are many other nutrient-rich, waist-friendly
foods, including:
■■  Fruits: avocados, berries and melons
■■  Nuts and seeds: including cashews, almonds, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, and
nut or seed butters
■■  Beans: black beans, tofu, soybeans
■■  Whole grains: brown rice, wheat and
oat bran
Potassium is another key mineral in the
body that helps to relax muscles and nerves,
as well as to promote healthy circulation and
digestion. Research has shown a possible
genetic link between potassium and slowwave sleep. Slow-wave sleep, also known
as delta sleep, is the deepest phase of our
sleep cycle, the time when we get our most
restorative sleep.
Bananas win again, as a great source of
potassium as well as magnesium. Other
healthy foods that contain high levels of
potassium are:
■■  Vegetables: leafy greens, mushrooms, tomatoes and cauliflower
■■  Beans: including lima, soybeans, lentils,
pinto and kidney beans
■■  Fish: salmon, cod, and flounder
■■  Citrus: especially in juice form, in sources
like orange juice
Calcium is a mineral that plays a direct role
in the production of melatonin, the “sleep hormone” that helps to maintain the body’s 24hour sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin levels rise
naturally during the night, helping promote
sleep, and are suppressed during the day, allowing us to be alert and wakeful. Calcium, like
magnesium and potassium, is also a natural
relaxant in the body.
■■  Dairy products are rich in calcium, and
can be a good choice for a sleep-friendly
evening snack.
■■  Dark leafy greens: turnip greens, collards,
spinach, mustard greens, kale
■■  Nuts and seeds: Brazil nuts, almonds,
sesame seeds
■■  Soy: tofu, soymilk
Take your vitamins
Vitamin and mineral supplements can play
an important role in helping maintain your
health and your sleep. These are some of the
best supplements for sleep:
Vitamin B. There are several supplements
on the B spectrum that can boost your
sleep. Vitamin B has been shown to
promote REM sleep. Vitamin B6 helps the
body to produce serotonin, which is known
as the “calming hormone.”
Vitamin D. This supplement has made
plenty of news in recent years, with much
discussion of how deficiencies in Vitamin
D can lead to depression, weight problems
and difficulties with sleep. A study of
veterans suffering from both chronic pain
and Vitamin D deficiency found that Vitamin
D supplements led to both reduction in pain
and improvement to sleep and the veterans’
sense of well being.
There is no single magic bullet that can eliminate sleep problems—that is to say, switching
to a bananas-only diet not only isn’t practical, it
isn’t going to make your sleep troubles disappear. Creating and maintaining a strong sleep
routine is about more than just what you eat—
but eating well can surely help.

PureCare One: Revolutionary Comfort and Support Pillow
By Gretchen Kast
PureCare is coming to the Winter Las Vegas
Market with a revolutionary, patented pillow
collection. The collection, PureCare One, includes six models, each composed of three
pieces: two Dual Silhouette Supports and a
Soul Center. These unique contouring components work in harmony with the curvatures of
the head, neck and spine.
The original three-piece pillow design was
invented by Tanya Hawkins. Struggling to get a
good night’s sleep and unable to find the right
pillow to fit her needs, Hawkins designed her
own, with supportive foam on the sides and
soft middle sleep surface made from memory
foam. “I tried every pillow on the market,” she
explains. “I wanted both sufficient neck support and comfort, and I could not find both in
any one pillow I purchased. So I created my
own pillow concept, testing over 50 prototypes before I brought the design to retailers
at the Las Vegas Market.” The response to her
prototypes were so positive, she knew she had
to find a way to market it to a larger audience.
“If it could help me sleep,” she explained, “I
wanted to help others sleep better too.” After
meeting with potential licensees at market,
Hawkins eventually teamed up with PureCare.
A choice, she says, that was obvious. “It really
feels like a partnership,” she explains. “It was
clear that they understood my original vision.”
President and Chief Operating Officer Jeff
Bergman was the first PureCare team member to see the concept. “I recognized that the
design of the pillow was completely unique
and knew immediately that her product could
be successfully developed for PureCare.” PureCare was looking for an opportunity to introduce customization into its product line-up,
and Hawkins’ design seemed like the perfect
fit. “PureCare strives to redefine comfort and
health with every product we offer,” Chief Mar-
40 BEDROOM / Winter 2014
keting Officer Sean Bergman explains. “I knew
that once this unique three-piece pillow system was combined with the health and wellness features that PureCare offers, we could
provide our retailers with a brand new pillow
that would carve out its own niche within the
pillow segment.”
Working closely with Hawkins, PureCare
updated the pillow concept to fit within the
brand and in a retail setting. The result is a
limited number of customizable options: three
different lines—the memory foam Cradle, the
latex Caress and the gel-wrapped memory
foam Cool—each with two different height options for a total of six different pillows available.
Each PureCare One pillow offers a 4”
or 5” Silhouette Support option. These
Dual Silhouette Supports are made of latex, memory foam or gel wrapped memory
foam, providing a unique blend of comfort
and support for all sleep positions. The soft
Soul Center of the pillow features Identically
Down, PureCare’s exclusive designer down
alternative which provides the comfort of
down without the drawbacks of down allergens. It works to continually conform to the
curvatures of each Silhouette Support for
uninterrupted comfort. The patented threepiece system is designed to promote a free
flow of air to provide a cooler night’s sleep
and prevent moisture from being trapped
inside. Like all of PureCare’s products,
PureCare One is made from high quality
materials that protect from allergens, dust
mites, bedbugs, and bacteria. The pillow
covers are treated with silver ions, which locate and deactivate bacteria, suppress the
reproduction of dust mites and other allergens, and virtually eliminate odors. “Never
before has a pillow collection dared to defy
convention quite like the PureCare One,”
says Bergman.
PureCare One’s strategic marketing campaign has been designed to appeal to both
consumers and retailers and emphasizes the
importance of trying it out before buying. “Pillows are a very personalized preference that
depends on a multitude of different factors in
addition to sleep position, including body type,
mattress model, and sleep habits,” Bergman
explains. As a result, PureCare has not designated any of the models within this collection to specific sleep positions. Each one is
designed to move with the sleeper to cradle
and soothe the resting body—regardless of
whether they sleep on their back, stomach,
or side. It allows the retailer to reach a wider
range of consumers. “Pillows have evolved,”
Bergman continues, “and we are bringing this
revolutionary concept to Las Vegas Market. In
short, you’ve GOT to try One.”

FABRICTECH INTERNATIONAL EMBRACES PURECARE ERA
Effective January 1st, Fabrictech International has rebranded by taking the name of one
of its most successful collections—PureCare. With this transition the PureCare has also
expanded its focus from offering mattress and pillow protection to offering a complete
collection of healthy sleep essentials.
“PureCare really represents who we have become,” chief marketing officer Sean
Bergman explains. “We have evolved from a technological mattress and pillow protection company to a consumer focused brand providing essential products for a healthier
and cleaner sleep environment.”
Over the past two years, PureCare has methodically begun implementing its rebranding process from Fabrictech to PureCare.
“Under the PureCare brand, consumers and retail partners can expect a steady advance in the creation and marketing of products that will enhance a healthier, cleaner
and more comfortable sleep experience,” states Bergman. “With PureCare as our platform we can make a strong statement to consumers: Let us help you to create a haven
of comfort and health in your sleep environment.”
Forever Foundations Introduces Steel Frame Foundations for Plus-Size Mattresses
By Gretchen Kast
Forever Foundations will introduce the
Foundation PLUS and the Foundation MAXPLUS at the Winter Las Vegas Market. The
all-steel support frame systems are specifically engineered to create the superior
strength and durability needed for the performance mattresses designed for the plussize customer. “The plus-size mattress is
a growing market segment in the mattress
industry as is the plus-size market in fashion, furniture and other industries. In fact,
according to the Journal of the American
Medical Association, over 68% of Americans are overweight, and nearly 34% officially qualify as obese,” explained company
president Dennis Rodgers. “Americans are
just getting bigger, taller, and larger.”
The height and weight of the average
American is much greater than it was 2025 years ago. This creates a consumer
challenge faced by retail sales associates
on a regular basis: helping the plus-size
customer select and purchase the very
best mattress and support system for their
individual needs.
“We know of at least three of the top twenty mattress manufacturers who are specifi-
cally designing, manufacturing and marketing mattresses for plus-size ‘bigger, taller,
larger’ consumers,” say Rodgers. “When we
talk about ‘Confidence From the Foundation
Up’, we mean that the entire sleep system
has to work together. You must have matching and compatible components working
together to give the plus-size customer the
confidence that they have selected the right
sleep set for the extra support they know
they need. You simply cannot sell the perfect
mattress designed to hold up to perform for
plus-size consumer and place it on a support system that will ultimately fail. We feel
providing more and better options to consumers who require extra support ultimately
will benefit the mattress industry.”

Glideaway Provides Added Support with its New and Updated Pillow Collection
The Blue Chill features
a full layer of cooling gel
now fused to a charcoal
memory foam core.
By Gretchen Kast
Glideaway Sleep Products’ Sleepharmony
memory foam pillow collection offers unique
components such as cooling gel and charcoal infused memory foam. The four-pillow
collection offers a variety of comfort feels for
consumers’ comfort.
Two pillow models, Embrace and CG
Sleep, join the updated Blue Chill and All
Seasons to complete Glideaway’s first pillow collection. The collection was designed
in conjunction with the company’s point-ofpurchase initiative, “The Five Good Sleep
Components Guide.”
The new Embrace pillow features an advanced memory foam core with a plush,
fiber-filled outer chamber offering the perfect balance of softness and support. Sleepers will appreciate the company’s Regulate
and Silver treatment, designed to keep them
at an optimum sleeping temperature while
fighting odor causing bacteria for a healthier
night’s sleep.
CG Sleep highlights two core components– charcoal and gel. A unique, dualsided pillow, the CG Sleep pillow features
charcoal and gel-infused memory foam clusters on one side, for cooling comfort, and a
premium fiber-fill on the flip-side for a luxurious feel. The active charcoal inside works

at both antibacterial and allergen control in
order to combat odors and bacteria growth.
As part of the collection, Glideaway has
also enhanced its All Seasons and Blue Chill
pillows. The All Seasons maintains its plush
comfort and conforming support, while adding the benefits of charcoal infused memory
foam. Meanwhile, the Blue Chill features a
full layer of cooling gel now fused to a charcoal memory foam core. Working together,
the gel and charcoal help maintain a lower
body temperature and reduce nighttime perspiration. Both pillows feature a removable,
machine-washable cooling cover.
“Pillows and accessories continue to be
one of the growth areas in the sleep products industry and we wanted to broaden our
offerings to give retailers even more assortment for their customers,” said Vice President of Sales Dan Baker. “These new SKUs
provide some of the latest technologies to
our clients. When they carry our line, they
now have the ability to offer the full range of
product available on the market today.”
All four pillows are offered in standard size
and are sold in convenient bags with sturdy
handles. Consumers can now see and feel
the pillows within their packaging. The company’s steel pillow and protector POP display
units will be replaced with eye-catching white
acrylic display stands to increase visibility on
retail floors. The new pillows, packaging and
POP all work together to reinforce the company’s Five Good Sleep Components Guide,
developed for RSAs and consumers alike.
The five key requirements to creating an optimum sleeping environment include personal
comfort fulfillment, proper support, balanced
pressure relief, temperature control and antibacterial and allergen control.

Reverie Includes Added Technology in Expandable Adjustable Base Options
By Christopher Schriever
Reverie introduces technologically advanced 8 Series adjustable base collection.
The innovative company’s latest adjustable
collection features state-of-the art technology upgrades and modern conveniences.
The 8 Series boasts an independent
head tilt feature, for added comfort and
support, as well as a proprietary Bluetooth
enabled four speaker surround sound system that allows consumers to experience
high-quality sound streamed wirelessly
from their smart devices. The easy to use
remote and USB docking station make for
efficient use.
“The 8 Series’ capabilities make it incredibly efficient and considerate of consumer’s
fast-paced lives. The modern conveniences
and functionality of the bed’s features allow
you to remain connected and productive if
desired—even when in bed. We integrated
new technology into our design in such a
way that it actually works together to create
the ultimate value add,” said Reverie President and CEO Martin Rawls-Meehan.
The 8 Series has a clean, modern look
that’s consistent with Reverie’s established
aesthetic. The base features a dual outer
base frame and Reverie’s proprietary patent pending “dual motion deck-on-deck”
design that prevents the potential safety issues often associated traditional adjustable
“deck-on-deck” beds. The foundations are
available in a Reverie’s grey fabric, with all
technology and speaker features concealed
within the side panel upholstery.
Moreover, the lower deck provides further masking with an inner skirt backing
that covers the visible steel under the bed
when it is elevated. The modern pieces are
customizable within their color scheme,
while the adjustable legs on the base allow
consumers to raise or lower the legs from
three and a half to five and eight inches in
height, to better suit their needs.
“The head tilt adjustability further benefits the consumer, giving them the opportunity to find their perfect position for maximum comfort. We listened very closely to
the input and opinions of our consumers,
working to develop and produce an aesthetically-pleasing product that integrates
modern technology and accessibility,”
Rawls-Meehan added.
The 8 Series will offer the company’s
patented massage technology for improved circulation, pre-set memory positions including the “Zero Gravity” position, eliminating strain and relieving pain
through simulated weightlessness, and an
“Anti-Snore” position, beneficial for alleviating suffers of sleep apnea and snoring.
The modern
conveniences and
functionality of the bed’s
features allow you to
remain connected and
productive if desired—
even when in bed.

Innovative Products and Solutions
From Christopher Schriever
The Winter Furniture Market is always
one of the biggest and most exciting, as
manufacturers flock to Las Vegas to unveil
the latest product introductions and enhancements. This year is certainly no exception—companies have been growing and
expanding, embracing a changing market
and prepping some of the most technologically advanced offerings we’ve seen to date!
We’re eager to share an issue filled with so
many innovative new mattresses and sleep
accessories, creative marketing campaigns
and unique materials.
In this issue, we took a closer look at Blu
Sleep Products. This Canadian designer of
foam specialty bedding accessories has
quite a bit in store for 2014 as they prepare
to expand their distribution throughout the
US and introduce their first ever mattress
collection! Blu Sleep has always been committed to carefully sourced raw materials,
high quality fabrics and breathable foam
constructions and the Somni Specialty Sleep
mattress offerings will feature the same distinct components and feel as the company’s
successful pillow and topper models. We
can’t wait to see what comes next!
But Blu Sleep isn’t the only company with
big changes on the horizon. Not only has
Fabrictech embarked on the new era with
the official change of their name to PureCare, but the company is unveiling a truly revolutionary new pillow design called PureCare
One. Colonial LLC will also debut two new
ground-breaking opportunities with their affordable headboard and scent marketing
programs, making unique POP materials
available to a wider audience of manufacturers and retailers.
With so many new collections, updates
and features, it would be almost impos-
sible to summarize all of the mattresses
covered in this issue. We’ve highlighted a
diverse array of innovative products—from
Spring Time Bedding’s value-priced GoPedic Gel Series to BIO-TEXTIMA’s VitalWOOD natural wooden-coil spring system
to Simmons’ self-adjusting ComfortPedic
iQ Sleep System—that are sure to appeal
to a wide range of retailers and consumers
alike. Carolina Mattress Guild continues to
push the envelope on sustainable bedding
as the only mattress manufacturer to feature Repreve fabric—a fiber made from recycled plastic water bottles—in the unique
E-Z Sleep Collection. Spring Air International heads to Las Vegas with a new version
of its successful Four Seasons collection,
which has been re-imagined to offer added
temperature control, expanded comfort
choices and flexibility.
This issue’s Feature from the Editor is focused on the growing Air Bed segment, an
appealing opportunity for retailers looking to
offer a customizable specialty sleep option.
Today’s air beds are available in a variety of
price-points and provide the ultimate in personalized comfort—from dual air chambers
that allow for couples to adjust just their side
of the bed, to the “active technology” found
in Kingsdown’s Sleep Smart Intuitive which
adjusts to sleepers’ needs in real-time.
