AIMS tour programs are not the same as those prepackaged for the general public — they are customplanned with your interests and tastes in mind.
AIMS EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS
The Academy’s Goal
The goal of the Academy is to offer information
and insight into health care delivery systems and
diagnostic and treatment methods overseas and
compare them to U.S. and Canadian systems.
The Academy stays informed by visiting all types of
medical institutions in diverse cultural settings and
by maintaining an ongoing dialogue with colleagues
in foreign lands. As a result, the Academy provides
an educational experience that can only take place
in the particular destination, as an integral part of
the location’s culture.
The Academic Program
Upon registration, each participant in the academic
program will receive an AIMS paper detailing the
health and medical issues of the particular
destination and other pertinent information. An
all-inclusive professional registration fee of $300 is
charged and billed separately to each participant
to cover the costs of all professional activities,
including transportation to and from meetings,
honoraria for local hosts, meeting rooms,
equipment, administrative fees and any other
academic resources needed.
Professional Visits
Professional visits will take place at medical schools,
hospitals, clinics or other health facilities in urban
or rural areas or on board ships. Participants will
have the opportunity to observe patients and
professional staff at work with the socio-economic
climate as the backdrop to understanding.
Where possible, indigenous healing techniques and
practices will be explored.
Certificate of Attendance
AIMS tours include Category 2 certification.
Visits to hospitals, clinics and medical facilities
will focus on group discussions of vital health
concerns that relate to all professionals regardless
of specialties.
Participant's attendance will be monitored
during the educational component through sign-in
lists and a summary report prepared by the
designated Academic Leader. A Certificate of
Attendance will be issued upon completion and
the number of CME credits are determined by the
number of hours spent visiting medical facilities
and ad-hoc meetings among physicians on the tour.
Tax Deductibility
The issue of tax deductibility for educational and
professional study abroad is a complex question
that should be addressed to your own tax advisor.
Current United States tax law does not limit
the number of trips one may take or the cost
involved. Rather, the test of “reasonableness”
applies. Since AIMS has been involved in
sponsoring medical tours for many years, we
suggest that participants inform their tax advisors
that the medical aspects of our tours focus on the
health issues of the host countries and can only
take place overseas. The tours are based on a
concept similar to “people to people” programs.
Additionally, participants travel as members of
AIMS, an organization exclusively composed
of health professionals worldwide.
About Your Health
AIMS travelers should be in stable health and be confident of their ability to undertake
the tour chosen. Every AIMS tour includes substantial amounts of walking. Tour participants
who require assistance must be accompanied by an adult companion, capable of and
totally responsible for providing such assistance. Please consult our Reservation Staff if
you are in doubt about the physical requirements of a particular tour.

TUESDAY: EN ROUTE. Afternoon departure
from the U.S. to Lima, Peru; transfer to your hotel.
WEDNESDAY: LIMA. Morning at leisure or
optional half day tour to Pachacamac. Flight this
afternoon to Iquitos; drive northwest to the port of
Nauta for embarkation on the Delphin II. Welcome
Dinner on board. (B,D)

THURSDAY: AMAZON CRUISE. Dawn and dusk
are ideal times for nature observation, so an early
rise is highly recommended. Today, explore the black
water stream and start learning about the rainforest. You
are now in Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, and will
have the opportunity to see its amazing wildlife including
parrots, macaws and monkeys. See the beautiful morpho
butterfly that flaps lazily along open corridors through
Machu Picchu

forest or along river edges or lowland forest. Return
to the ship for lunch and time to relax before the
afternoon swim with dolphins. (B,L,D)

FRIDAY: AMAZON CRUISE. Morning cruise
along Lake Atun Poza, to see several species of egrets,
herons, hawks, and long legged neotropical cormorants,
fishing for their dinner in their natural habitat. Explore
other black water lagoons linked to this huge lake, where
grasshoppers, dragonflies and butterflies live along the
grassy edges and lily pads of freshwater swamps and
marshes. After lunch on board, our exploration of the
Picaya River continues. At sunset, marvel at the
beautiful colors of the sky and reflection of the jungle
in the black waters. After dinner, a Night Safari in
search of herons and spectacled owls. (B,L,D)

of the perfectly carved stones weigh over 130 tons.
Afternoon Professional Visit is scheduled Dinner and

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima,
connecting back to the U.S. (B)

SATURDAY: AMAZON CRUISE. Early departure
to try your hand at piranha fishing. After lunch,
visit the riverside community of Yanalipa, your first
interaction with the local villages to learn about their
unique way of life. Evening: Briefing and slide show
with our guides reviewing all we have seen and learned,

SUNDAY: AMAZON CRUISE / LIMA. Morning
meeting with locals at Puerto Miguel Village. Return
to the ship; after lunch, disembarkation and return to
Iquitos for your flight to Lima. Arrival and transfer

MONDAY: LIMA. Morning Professional Visit is
scheduled. Then, tour the lovely Plaza Mayor where
the Government Palace, City Hall, Cathedral and the
Archbishop’s Palace are located. Proceed to beautiful
Casa Aliaga, a remarkably preserved colonial mansion,
occupied by the same family since 1535. Continue to
the San Francisco Monastery, a wonderful work of
modern architecture. Continue through the residential
districts of Miraflores and San Isidro for magnificent
views of the Pacific Ocean and its beaches. End the day
at the Larco Herrera Museum, housed in an 18th
century colonial mansion, exhibiting the most extensive
collection of pre-Columbian Art in Peru. Tonight,
Welcome Dinner at one of the best restaurants in Lima

Morning flight to Cuzco, fabled capital of the Inca
Empire; upon arrival, begin your trip to the Urubamba
Valley, the “Sacred Valley” of the Incas. Stop at the
colonial village of Pisac; visit the bustling Indian Market.
After lunch at Casa Hacienda Orihuela, continue to
Ollantaytambo, an ancient fortress of temples and

Quito via Lima; transfer to your hotel. Surrounded
by the snowcapped Andes, Quito was once the second
capital of the Incan Empire and a base for the Spanish
Conquistadors. Afternoon Professional Visit. The city’s

Cuzco, fabled capital of the Incan Empire; upon
arrival tour the Urubamba Valley, “Sacred Valley”
of the Incas. Stop at the colonial village of Pisac;

FRIDAY: SAN CRISTOBEL ISLAND / QUITO.
Disembark at San Cristobal Island; the provincial
capital of the Galapagos Islands. This is the same island
that Darwin first visited in September 1835. Visit the
Interpretation Center, located in a natural setting where
visitors can understand the natural history of the
Galapagos. Then, flight back to Quito; transfer to the
hotel. Farewell Dinner and overnight in Quito. (B,D)

SATURDAY: QUITO / OTAVALO. Drive to
Otavalo through scenic fertile valleys and orchards.

one of the best in Ecuador. Dinner and overnight at a

SUNDAY: OTAVALO / QUITO. Departure to
Quito; stop at the village of Calderon, home of the
renowned bread-dough dolls painted in bright colors.
After lunch, continue back to Quito for overnight. (B,L)

MONDAY: QUITO / GALAPAGOS / BALTRA
ISLAND. Today, we embark on a remarkable journey
to the beginning of time – the Galapagos Islands – an
archipelago of volcanic islands 600 miles off the Pacific
coast. Flight from Quito to Baltra Island; transfer to
the dock to board the MV Santa Cruz. Head to
Dragon Hill, with beautiful views of the bay and the
western area of the archipelago. This area is a nesting
site of a big number of land iguanas re-introduced by
the Charles Darwin Research Station. (B,L,D)

TUESDAY: BARTHOLOME / JAMES ISLAND.
Disembark at Bartolome Island for a hike to the
summit. Panga ride around colossal Pinnacle Rock;
time to enjoy the beach and snorkeling. Afternoon
outing at Puerto Egas, a great location to see shore birds
and marine iguanas. (B,L,D)

‘ EDNESDAY: DARWIN BAY / NORTH
SEYMOUR ISLAND. Enter Darwin Bay. Land
at a small white-coralline beach; observe hundreds of
birds. The more adventurous can snorkel along the
cliffs and look for Hammerhead Sharks. Afternoon stop
at North Seymour Island. Today’s walk includes a view
of the coast and the interior of the island, while exploring
colonies of blue-footed boobies. (B,L,D)

ISLAND. Disembarkation at Santa Fe Island.

TUESDAY: BANGKOK / CHIANG RAI. Flight
to Chiang Rai in the “Golden Triangle” region
where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand converge. This
ancient city was founded in 1262 by King Meng Rai,
who also founded Chiang Mai. Chiang Rai became
the first capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom; it is
known for its rich cultural diversity. (B)

WEDNESDAY: CHIANG RAI / CHIANG MAI.
Visit to Mae Sai, geographically the most northern
town of Thailand on the border with Burma. The two
countries are connected by a bridge over the Mae Sai
River. Continue to the “Golden Triangle,” the meeting
point of the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand. Travel
by boat on the Mekong River, visiting Wat Chedi Luang
before driving via Wiang Pa Pao to Chiang Mai, the
“Rose of the North.” Tonight, enjoy a special Kanthoke

THURSDAY: CHIANG MAI. Drive through the
city, passing old city walls, markets, residential areas,
and foreign consulates. Then, drive up to the beautiful
hill temple of Doi Suthep, which offers a panoramic
view of the city and countryside. The temple, built in
1384 A.D., is considered the most sacred temple in
Northern Thailand, and welcomes Buddhist pilgrims
from everywhere. Continue to the colorful village of the
Meo Hill Tribe, which still retains its ancient culture

NATIONAL PARK. Today, we head north into
the heart of East Africa—big game country in all its
splendor. The day begins early and the drive is
spectacular. First stop: Aberdare on the Eastern wall of the
Great Rift Valley where majestic Mt. Kenya dominates
the landscape. Lunch at the Aberdare Country Club,
then continue to The Ark, a viewing wonder perched
atop a natural spur a mile and a half up. All around
are lush mountain forests and watering holes where
elephant, buffalo and rhino come to sample the salt
lick. Warm clothing is advised. Nights may be chilly,
but only an overnight bag is required. (Rest of your

the Volga, Uglich was founded in 1148; rich in
history, the city is home to some of Russia’s most
beautiful churches and cathedrals. The most noteworthy
include the Transfiguration Cathedral and the
magnificent Church of Dimitry, dedicated to the tragic
story of Ivan the Terrible’s son. You’re invited to visit
the home of a local Russian family, learning about
everyday life here as you enjoy a home-cooked meal

UGLICH / YAROSLAVL. The ship docks in
Yaroslavl today. Founded by Prince Yaroslav the
Wise, it is one of Russia’s oldest cities, tracing its roots
back to the Vikings and stretches for miles along the
confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl Rivers. Explore
the city’s history through its architecture, including the
fortified 12th century Transfiguration Monastery and
the Church of Elijah the Prophet. (B,L,D)

YAROSLAVL / GORITSY. Today, arrive in
Goritsy, a peaceful farming town and a typical
Russian village; see the Monastery of St. Cyril on the
White Lake and the Museum of the Icons. Return to
the ship and sail for Kizhi. Tonight, (and every night
on board,) enjoy the lectures, music performances, and

GORITSY / KIZHI. Dock in Kizhi, an island
at the north end of Lake Onega, home to some
of the most amazing wooden architecture in Russia.
Forever linked to Novgorod the Great, the style of
architecture reflects its early introduction to Christianity.
In 1764 locals built the Church of Intercession, its
towering walls and 22 domes, without the use of a
single nail. Walking tour includes the Museum of

KIZHI / SVIRSTROY. Today, we dock in
Svirstroy, 100 miles from St. Petersburg with a
population of only 1000. Free time to stroll through
this unspoiled Russian village and browse through the

highlight today is arrival in St. Petersburg: One
of Russia’s former capitals, this city rivals Paris or Venice
for its romantic image; it was built to the exact

impressive squares. Your tour of this beautiful city
includes Nevsky Prospect, Palace Square, and St. Isaac’s
Cathedral. After lunch, tour the Hermitage Museum,
former Palace of the Czars, which houses the royal art
collection with over 3 million works of art – truly one
of the largest and most impressive art museums in the
